Paper Tigers (Fear University, #4)

Fear University has created a new monster …

The infamous fear switch research started with me, Patient Zero. But I am a failure. My mind adapted and now I move through the shadows like the creatures I was created to hunt. I spent my entire life in a cage with scalpels in my brain, but I am finally free—thanks to the Commander.

I am Zero, and I will make the bad men at Fear University pay.

I, Ollie Volkova, have returned to Fear University to rebuild and restore the school to its former standard of protecting the world against monsters, both human and aswang. But something new is killing Original families all over Kodiak Island and nearly assassinated the president of my university. The hunters call it a ghost, but I know she’s something more. Something worse than monsters and men. Something like me.

Fear University is my home, and I will kill to protect it.

A wolf in shifter form, Asher lives with a curse placed upon him and his predecessors by the elusive Raven—a dark entity whose identity remains a mystery. Choosing to live in isolation within the walls of Lake Manor, a private estate concealed by the dense woods of Brokenridge, Asher has vowed never to love or to fall in love with anyone believing it to be the only way to survive. However, after ten years of neglecting his people and the protégés left in his care, along with the impending threats of an uprising, Asher learns the only way to break the Raven’s curse on future Keepers, thereby preventing them from suffering the same fate, is to accept his.
This becomes his strongest challenge of all when he encounters Elle Ison, the woman of his dreams. Does Elle hold the key? Can she help him change his fate?

#Review – Formation: Age of Expansion – A Kurtherian Gambit Series (The Ghost Squadron #1) by Sarah Noffke, J.N. Chaney & Michael Anderle

Formation: Age of Expansion - A Kurtherian Gambit Series (The Ghost Squadron, #1)

Kill the bad guys. Save the Galaxy. All in a hard day’s work.

After ten years of wandering the outer rim of the galaxy, Eddie Teach is a man without a purpose. He was one of the toughest pilots in the Federation, but now he’s just a regular guy, getting into bar fights and making a difference wherever he can. It’s not the same as flying a ship and saving colonies, but it’ll have to do.

That is, until General Lance Reynolds tracks Eddie down and offers him a job. There are bad people out there, plotting terrible things, killing innocent people, and destroying entire colonies.

Someone has to stop them.

Eddie, along with the genetically-enhanced combat pilot Julianna Fregin and her trusty E.I. named Pip, must recruit a diverse team of specialists, both human and alien. They’ll need to master their new Q-Ship, one of the most powerful strike ships ever constructed.  And finally, they’ll have to stop a faceless enemy so powerful, it threatens to destroy the entire Federation.

All in a day’s work, right?

Experience this exciting military sci-fi saga and the latest addition to the expanded Kurtherian Gambit Universe. If you’re a fan of Mass Effect, Firefly, or Star Wars, you’ll love this riveting new space opera.

*NOTE: If cursing is a problem, then this might not be for you.

Goodreads

Black Ops, Sci Fi, Space Opera that sucks you in from the very beginning! I have not read any of the books that go along with this but if you are a lover of the fast paced, action packed, and the crazy characters that go with this type of thing then this is the book for you! Right from the beginning there is a scuffle with some of our main characters. But this is only the start. Our outcast, Eddie, used to be in the Federation but is now doing his own thing but still stands up for what he believes in. He is recruited to do some black ops type of work that involves stopping some bad guys that are doing bad things. He is paired up with Julianna and both are badass! They have been given an opportunity to recruit some diverse people to help them stop this quiet war and save some innocents. But nothing they do is going to be “normal”. Two of the recruits are of a different alien race and how they come upon them is nothing but out of the ordinary. The banter between all of them, during conflicts and when they are relaxing, is so fun! I kind of imagine these stories being a cross between Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy. There is never a dull moment with this team and I doubt there ever will be. I am looking forward to seeing what else the Ghost Squadron come up against. Must read!

Michael Anderle

Michael Anderle (ok, weird talking about myself in the 3rd person) (1967-Hopefully a long time from NOW) was born in Houston, Tx. A very curious child, he got into trouble – a lot. What to do with an inquisitive mind when he was grounded? Read!

Ok, done with all of that 3rd person stuff.

In the first 20 years, I mostly read Science Fiction and Fantasy. In the last 10 years I have enjoyed Urban Fantasy and Military Fiction. With this background, I’ve been blessed with creating The Kurtherian Gambit series, a well-selling, and fan loved, collection of stories.

The fans have propelled these stories beyond my wildest imagination and they should get all of the credit for sharing with friends, family and occasionally the random person on the street. They are fantastic!

#Review – New Egypt: The Revelations of Oriceran (Soul Stone Mage #5) by Sarah Noffke

New Egypt: The Revelations of Oriceran (Soul Stone Mage, #5)

After a century, magic’s greatest enemy has returned—Vampires.

Queen Azure sets off on a world tour of Oriceran, thinking she’ll strengthen relations with neighboring kingdoms. On her first stop in New Egypt she finds something chilling.

People all over the kingdom are being bitten, many of them turned.

Led into a secret headquarters, Azure meets one of the oldest covens governed by the magic that connects Oriceran to Earth. The witches and wizards of New Egypt need protection from the vampires. Those from Virgo will need help too. These blood hungry monsters are taking over and want more.

Ready for a brand new take on vampires? Step into New Egypt where the Founders rule, turning those with magic into Followers, one bite at a time.

*NOTE: There’s cursing in this book because these witches and wizards are just rude like that. If cursing is a problem, then this might not be for you.

Gooodreads

One of my favorites in this series! The Soul Stone Mage series has been nothing less than a crazy bumpy ride with some really interesting characters. Just when Azure thinks she can enjoy her time and take on her world tour she finds trouble brewing in New Egypt. VAMPIRES! They’re baaaaack! And wreaking havoc! I love how the story builds and the hilarious way these characters play off each other. In this story we get a few new characters (one very surprising character, Bob, but I can tell you no more about him). Azure has been told she is more or less the chosen one and has to embark on another crazy adventure that is really going to put her to the test. The setting for this story is one of my favorites! I love Egypt and we get to see the differences between New Egypt on Oriceran and Egypt on Earth. Even though this group of characters seem to get into some crazy situations they all manage to keep things light and fun. It’s so easy to fall in love with the characters and this story. I can’t wait for more!

#Review – Grey (A Vampire’s Thirst #2) by Bella Roccaforte

Grey (A Vampire's Thirst, #2)

Grey has always enjoyed the finer things in life. He maintains control over his darker, blood-thirsty side by being “human” as much as possible. He’s immersed himself in the daily life of the living, as a history professor, and art historian. He has no patience for the seedier parts of humanity and revels in honor and propriety. That’s what keeps his thirst at bay, along with the threat of The Directive.

He’s been enjoying his mundane life, until he’s contacted by member of The Directive and ordered to complete a task, one he he’s been dreading for centuries. A favor he must repay for a time when he exercised less discretion.

There’s a Supernatural wreaking havoc in Atlanta and he has to stop them. That’s when it strikes: The Thirst. Like a bolt of lightning crashing into him and rendering him powerless to resist the allure of his target. His control has deserted him and his power has increased beyond his comprehension. He’ll defy anyone and everything, including The Directive to fulfill his desire for his blood-mate.

Will anyone survive Grey’s dark thirst?

Bella Roccaforte brings you book 2 in A K Michaels’ brand new world, A Vampire’s Thirst full of hot as hades alpha males in this smoking paranormal romance story.

Goodreads

Hang on for this ride! Literally! This is a super-hot story that is action packed and never slows down. Hold on to your hats, folks! Right from jump we meet Grey. Even as a vampire he is an incredible gentleman. Very genuine and cares about humanity but super sexy! He is sent on a task for The Directive, against his judgement. However, when he arrives the Thirst is overwhelming him, to say the least. He can’t get satiated. Someone is out causing a ruckus and there are bodies piling up everywhere. His judgement is clouded with the Thirst. This is when he meets Mila. She has family issues and is topside looking for someone special. But when we find out exactly what Mila is that the true problems starting coming out. I was a little worried about how I, personally, would like the book because I don’t normally read some of the sexier types of books because sometimes they get out of hand. But dayum! Bella rocked this one out! The storyline never slows down and never a dull moment. The supporting characters are incredible. There is the perfect amount of action, fighting, blood drinking, and LOVE ~wags eyebrows~! This is truly an unforgettable story and I look forward to more like this from Bella. **Get it girl**!!!!

#Review – Emancipation (Pen Pals and Serial Killers #1) by Jo Michaels

Emancipation (Pen Pals and Serial Killers #1)

Tobias Butler has been sitting on death row since being sentenced for a gruesome murder in 2007. Bored out of his mind, he decided to apply to the online penpal program in 2012. It’s a pleasant distraction—nothing more, nothing less—for three years, until he’s contacted by a beautiful, smart young lawyer named Jess. She’s convinced he’s innocent and wants to see him freed. As they organize their attack on the judicial system, he wonders how she plans to get his conviction overturned—because he’s guilty, and he knows it. Goodreads

Oh holy hell! What a mindf**k! This is one dark and twisted read. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time trying to figure out what the angle is. I just couldn’t get it figured out. Then when it seems like I’ve got it figured out…BAM! PLOT TWIST! This is definitely a psychological suspenseful thriller. This is told from Tobias’s point of view. He is a vile human who is a serial killer. He is guilty as sin! He is currently on death row and just going through the motions of prison life. To pass the time he became part of the prison pen pal program. He is contacted by all types of crazy organizations and people. But one day he gets a letter from Jess. She is a gorgeous young lawyer and she thinks she can get all of his charges dropped. He then becomes very curious and works to reel her in. Charming and good looking with a smooth tongue….and he has her hooked. The whole time I found myself yelling at Jess like WTF are you doing?!?! Run away! Why are you still entertaining him? OMG!  This is very graphic as this is being told from a serial killer’s point of view. Like, make my skin crawl graphic. It was a rush reading this. My heart didn’t stop pounding. Absolutely effing intense! There are no warm and fuzzies in this story. And the end….well, the end is flipping mind blowing. I was absolutely blown away. And when it was over I had to just sit and figure out what it is I just finished reading. If you need something out of your normal comfort zone, this is it. A definite must read!

Jo Michaels

Jo Michaels is…

Hi, I’m Jo. Let’s forget all the “Jo Michaels is blah, blah, blah” stuff and just go with it. I’m a voracious reader (often reading more than one book at a time), a writer, a book reviewer, a mom, a wife, and one of the EICs at INDIE Books Gone Wild. I have an almost photographic memory and tend to make people cringe at the number of details I can recall about them and/or their book(s). My imagination follows me around like a conjoined twin and causes me to space out pretty often or laugh out loud randomly in completely inappropriate situations.

I have a degree in graphic design, and my journey to the end was one few students who begin that program ever complete. However, this was one case where my memory and OCD tendencies helped me. Graduation was one of the most amazing days of my life. But, my most amazing day was when my now husband proposed. Every little girl dreams of being Cinderella someday, and he pulled off the proposal of fantasies.

At the risk of sounding cliche, I’m going to let it out there and say how much I absolutely adore the man I’m married to. Along with my children, he’s my whole world.

I’ve lived in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia, but I’ve had my feet in almost every state. Traveling is something I adore, and have plans to someday see the Mongolia I’ve written about in Yassa.

One of my favorite things is hearing from fans! You can find me on social media most any day of the week. Connect! I’d love to hear from you.

#Review – The Draqon’s Queen (Shifters Of Kladuu #4) by Pearl Foxx

The Draqon's Queen (Shifters of Kladuu, #4)

She just wants time to heal her broken heart. Instead, she finds her true calling astride a sexy, grizzled Draqon with fire colored wings.

Niva returned to Kladuu for the Alpha of Clan Vilka, but when he took another mate, her heart shattered. To pick up the pieces, she travels to the Draqons’ hive with their menacing, gruff leader. But behind his black eyes lies the one man who may be able to put her pieces back together.

Years ago, Zayd lost his Queen in a battle that left him scarred and full of self-loathing. But when a beautiful young human comes to live at his hive high in the snow-capped mountains on Kladuu, his heart begins to thaw. Flying in his Draqon form has always been about harnessing his rage, but with Niva on his back, he finds a freedom he never felt, even with his Queen.

When Kladuu is threatened, Zayd must face his fear for Niva’s safety and accept her as his rider and new Queen, or it may be the end of the planet they both call home.

* The Draqon’s Queen is book four in the Shifters of Kladuu and should be read after The Vilka’s Captive for a consistent series experience. *

Goodreads

A fiery story! Niva’s story is one of my favorites! Meek Niva is able to talk Zayd into taking her back to the Draqon hive with him. Zayd is compelled to bring her with him, and has no idea why, but it is killing him inside trying to figure it out. Niva wants to put her life on Earth and life with the Vilka’s behind her once and for all. She just wants to find her place and be accepted. She is drawn to Zayd and him to her but they try to fight it. Zayd has experienced a major heartbreak and coming to terms with this is putting Niva in harm’s way. In the past books the Vilka’s and Draqon’s have always had issues with each other. With impending doom on the horizon that’s putting them all at risk they are forging an alliance. The question is finding out if it will be worth it and if they can all be saved. The push and pull between Niva and Zayd is fire and ice. Hot and cold all at the same time.  The story and the blooming love will bring you through a range of emotions from being happy and laughing, on the verge of tears then making your hear t pound with the suspenseful twists. The world of Kladuu is simply intriguing! I would visit if I could. Until then, I will continue the series as it keeps getting better and better!

Surprising and beautiful ending to this magical series! Following Azure on yet another quest has been wonderful. Even though I knew this was the end of Azure’s adventure, it never felt like it. There were so many other things going on, new characters, new places, and another adventure! Azure is one of my favorite characters. She knows when to be crass and when to laugh. There is never a dull moment with her friends behind her. They have her back and she has everyone’s best interests in mind. She is faced with so many challenges but she does an amazing job of putting others first and trying to solve the problems, not push them off. It’s a bittersweet ending as this series is finished but I am looking forward to the next part of the journey. I hope to see Azure and the gang pop up in others!

If Ophelia had known Grace Vincent, she might have hated her—but only to hide a secret yearning, one hidden from herself for so long. This desire to love and be loved was covered up by a darkness, a thing called fear, though the monsters then were apparitions of a broken, lingering past, and not even real.
They’re real now. But I’m no longer afraid. At least, not like I was then, back when I was hiding behind Ophelia. I have a little soul to protect now, and I must be strong. It doesn’t mean I’m cured of my afflictions, though. I wish it did.
As the dead roam above us, the ones inside me claw to be set free. I’ve made so many mistakes, and guilt is one of those, gnawing at me, catapulting the nightmares that take my loves away from me again, and again, every time I close my eyes.

Nothing could’ve prepared us for what we found a mile beneath the Earth’s surface.
A sanctuary? A home?
A place to test my ability to harness my demons?
Check. That one, I know for sure.
A dangerous place filled to the brim with vicious, blood-thirsty creatures?
Crossing my fingers it’s a “no” on that one.
But from what I can tell, Logan’s words at CVS were as true then as they are now:
It’s a permanent motherf**ing opposite day.

So why did Gideon send me here?
What are the truths behind his lies?
Will I find them here?
Will he find me here?
Will I be able to keep Missy safe?
Will I be safe from the dark tunnels of my own mind?

All that’s left now, is to hope . . . and to survive.

*Content Advisory/Trigger Warning**

Tunnels and Planes/The Night Blind Saga is a dark apocalyptic series with some very steamy, sometimes rather dark F/F scenes, M/F scenes, and other mixes (later books in series). In these books you will find a buffet of language, gore, drug use, violence, assault/abuse, and a bunch of other stuff of this nature. If you don’t ingest your literature occasionally (or often) on the edge, gritty, in the dark, and/or possibly in a random stairwell, this series may not be right for you.
*Recommended for mature readers 18+
*Those sensitive to the topics of angel babies and sexual assault should read at their own risk.
*Not recommended for those with PTSD (though the main character herself suffers from PTSD, so… your call)
*The books in this series may contain possible cliffhangers

Holy effing whaaaat?! This author! SMH….LOL! I AM HOOKED! THIS IS MY ADDICTION! This installment of the series has really shown the dark and gritty but with the perfect amount of humanity. I am not really sure what I was expecting when the group arrives at the Tunnels, but this version is waaaaaay different in the best twisted and raw way. The author never ceases to amaze me in the way these characters have been developing. They are in a constant turmoil of doing what’s right and what’s right for them. The emotions and feelings are very intense. This isn’t just another zombie book where the survivors are just trying to survive. This series is taking it to the next level. You have a community that is safe in the tunnels and is absolutely perfect. But sometimes these are only illusions and there are a lot of smoke and mirrors in this particular place. Grace and company are in a place where they can thrive in several different ways depending on what they are willing to do. There is never a dull moment in this story. From the time they get there, through middle of the story and right up to the end you will be on the edge of your seat fanning yourself, cringing, needing a tissue, and rooting for the good guys (whoever they may be). It’s an action packed, heart thumping helluva ride! Go read this now!

Christina L. Rozelle

Ever since I can remember I’ve observed life, people, and things with a sense of awe and wonder. The stories I write are a conglomeration of my life’s observations, experiences, heartbreaks, and triumphs, bits and pieces of the beauty and devastation inherent all around us, and inside each of us. But for many years I thought I was broken. My “overactive” imagination was seen as a defect by me and those around me. Through my struggles with PTSD, BPD, suicidal depression, and debilitating addictions, I clawed at the earth in my hole, gazing toward the sun high above me. Would I ever make it out alive? Would I one day be able to walk beneath that blue sky a free woman, and share that gift with others? For a long time I doubted that would ever happen for me . . .

One day, my eleven-year-old came home from school, excited that they had just started reading “The Hunger Games” in her fifth grade class (teacher skipped the kissing parts—GASP!). Having been newly sober, and looking for ways to rebuild my relationship with my daughter who’d been through so much during my sickness, I brought up the idea of writing a YA novel of my own, and she’d help with the plotting and characters. I’d been writing poetry and prose forever, and never pictured myself as a fiction writer, but if it meant strengthening my bond with my child, I was willing to give it a try. What happened as I began this story about orphaned angel-humans, reptilian antagonists, and shadow-animal people, was . . . well, I scrapped that and started something else. Haha

My first full-length novel, “The Butterfly Prophecy,” was unpublishable, riddled with plot holes and a plethora of other errors, and ultimately ended up in a box. As a high school dropout with little college under my belt, I took to the local library and Google to learn how to (really) write a novel, and I was soon on my way to creating a work of art I’d be proud to share with the world. Though The Butterfly Prophecy wasn’t published, many elements, themes, settings, and a few characters from that story were used in the Treemakers Trilogy, which was really cool! Micah Greenleigh, Ms. Ruby, Emerson, Ty, and Aura (Joy’s mom) were so real to me that I couldn’t help but transplant them into their forever story home.

During the nine months it took to write that first book, I realized that writing was medication for me. When I wrote, my life made sense, I had purpose, I could breathe, and think clearly. I could use my tattered past to create a beautiful work of art, and that alone turned my life around completely. Two novels later I gave birth to “The Treemakers” during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month in November)2013. I scrapped that and rewrote the whole thing, publishing The Treemakers a year later. During its creation, I realized this was what I was put on this planet to do. Creating these characters for you to experience and feel, to love and hate, to laugh and cry and escape from reality into remarkable worlds with, brings me immense joy and fulfillment. So, thank you for your part in my journey, for being the receivers of this gift that was so freely given to me. You complete me. (Cheesy, but true! 😉 I’m continually amazed at the outpouring of love and support for me and my work, and I promise to do my best to continue creating quality stories for you to get swept away into.

I’m an eclectic writer with books and works-in-progress in many genres. My goal as an author is to make each series distinctly different from the last, so if one of my series’ isn’t for you I’d encourage you to give the others a try! Thanks again for all you do, and I wish you the very best in all of your endeavors.

Happy reading!
Xoxo Christina

#Review – Dark Dreams and Dead Things (Dead Things #2) by Martina McAtee

Dark Dreams and Dead Things (Dead Things, #2)

17-year-old November Lonergan spent her whole life feeling like an outsider. She was right. She’s a reaper like her mother; like her two cousins, Kai and Tristin. The supernatural world believes they are part of a prophecy to save them from an evil known as the Grove. Ember just wants to survive high school and fix the fallout from bringing back her friend.

Old enemies are lurking; waiting for their opportunity to strike but the pack has a new problem. A group of legendary hunters has resurfaced, threatening the reapers and anybody who stands with them. They are making good on their threats too; attacking those closest to the pack.

Their only hope of defeating the Legionaries involves trusting a stranger to perform a dangerous spell to advance Ember and her cousin’s powers. But Ember has a secret; a secret she can’t tell the pack. One that leaves the pack vulnerable.

An attack on pack allies, leaves one member of the group injured and another missing, along with a mysterious girl named Evangeline who may play a bigger part in this than any of them realize. As the Legionaries are closing in, the pack must trust their enemies, enter hostile territories, and play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a psychopath. Their entire plan lynches on a dangerous bargain, but rescuing one member of the pack could mean losing another in their place…possibly forever.

It’s amazing when an author can continue a story and make it just as great, if not better, than the first. Martina, my hat’s off to you! After reading the first I just had to know what happened. I didn’t realize how addicting this story was until I finished the first… and the second…then had nowhere to go (bring on book 3!). This story is still witty and funny but, as the title indicates, it is dark. I felt like it’s about finding a way to fight the monsters you can’t see. Ember and the crew have experienced it all. Knife fights, blood rituals, and deaths. Or at least they thought they did. Then you throw a prophecy in the midst of the craziness and all the freaks come out! While Ember and her cousins are trying to figure out what exactly they are themselves and how to harness their power, they now have to prepare for a war that they didn’t realize they were part of. It seems all they can get is a bunch of half-truths, but in true paranormal fashion the fight is on! And of course we have some new characters! It’s very Mace-centric! In the first book Mace is our resident bad guy, but kinda good, maybe, lol! But he is also very mysterious and we never really get a good look at what happened to him or what his story was. Well he is the bad guy I just had to know more about. Thank the gods Martina gives us his backstory! It explains soooo much about him. And Silas, well he is very special, the kind you love to hate to love. He is a new constant in the story that will keep you trying to figure out his angle. As with the first story this one is very intense but it is darker. It is nail biting, keep you on the edge of your seat, suspenseful reading. I can’t say much about what happens because there are so many twists and turns and I don’t want to give anything away. Absolute intense sequel and soooooo good! Definite must read! I can’t wait for the next!

Mountain of Truth: The Revelations of Oriceran (Soul Stone Mage, #3)

The Kingdom of Virgo has lived in peace for thousands of years…until now.

Terran has gone too far, poisoning the wells and streams of Virgo. Queen Azure must act fast in order to save her people from a deadly virus that steals their magic.

Only one witch knows the cure to the virus and no one knows how to find her.

Azure and her ragtag crew set off for the Mountain of Truth in hopes of locating Mage Lenore, the oldest witch alive. They soon learn the problem isn’t finding the old witch. It’s surviving each other on the mountain.

Welcome to The Revelations of Oriceran.

A magical world tied to Earth, and nothing like it.

*NOTE: There’s cursing in this book because these witches and wizards are just rude like that. If cursing is a problem, then this might not be for you.

Azure has been accepted as queen and many people believe in her. As if the rift between the humans and witches isn’t getting better, the humans have poisoned the wells and streams of Virgo. Many are sick now and Azure has to get into action. Instead of handling the issues in the traditions of past queens she takes it upon herself to go on a quest to help her people. She has to find a cure and continues to be proactive in trying to help her people. She and her quirky group embark out on yet another journey. She must travel to the Mountain of Truth to get her questions answered by the only witch that has them. The trip includes many wacky issues and some new alliances. The only problem is they have to make it to the top of the mountain but this particular mountain is filled with magic and illusions. It’s a true testament to their friendships. They are also on the search for the Book of Branches. This portion of the trip really opens Azure’s eyes to the ways of many of the other people of Oriceran. She is embracing the fact that she is different and unique. Her heart is really there for not only her people but all of Oriceran. The series will keep you on your toes with all the crazy banter between this quirky group. It’s the perfect mix of emotion, fun, and fantasy. Loved it!
