Profile of Retribution

synopsis

From USA Today bestselling author of Deadly Offerings, Alexa Grace, comes the third book in her Profile Series: Profile of Retribution, a spine-tingling story of guilt, vengeance and regret.

>The Dream

>Bradley and Tisha Lucas had a mini-mansion in the country, a thriving architectural business, and two handsome, intelligent and athletic teenage sons.  They were living the dream, until the day their world imploded and they were thrust into a parent’s worst nightmare.

>The Nightmare

>Before they had a chance to grieve the untimely deaths of their seventeen-year-old twin boys, they learned the horrific truth. Like a headline ripped from the tabloids, their sons had systematically abducted, tortured, and murdered seven innocent young women.

>The Retribution

>For their parents, the nightmare didn’t stop after Evan and Devan Lucas snuffed out the lives of seven victims for fun.  It was just beginning.  At a support group, the families of the women murdered by the Lucas twins gather to tell their stories, share their anger and grief, as they move toward a new normal.

>For one member of the group, an obsession for payback drove his days and nights.  He pledged to make Bradley and Tisha Lucas pay for the crimes of their sons.  It was a pledge he was determined to keep.  He’d make them suffer, just as their sons’ victims had.  Those who spawn monsters shall be judged, shall be condemned. Retribution would be his.

>Racing Against the Clock

>It wasn’t that Sgt. Cameron Chase didn’t have a suspect, he had too many of them.

>There were seven families who might want to harm the Lucas couple.  But which of them wanted the ultimate in retribution — to see them dead?

>Don’t miss this fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat crime fiction thriller.  Profile of Retribution will have your attention in its grips from page one until the end.

Tangled Hearts

Army Strong has a mission….to protect Southern Sassy at all costs.

The directive had been clear: Deeply embed himself in the fair town of Paradise, Tennessee, and keep one Melody Song Reardon from forgiving her fornicating ex-fiancé and keep her safe by any means necessary. Fortunately, Retired First Sergeant Callum Valentine had always been a man that got the job done. Unfortunately, nobody told him that while his ‘job’ might be as pretty as a picture, she could be ornery as a wet cat and had a stubborn streak a mile long. Now, he was battling baristas and dodging would-be assassins in an effort to keep one sultry southern minx safe.

He’d thought the Taliban would be the most dangerous force he ever face. Imagine his surprise when he realized that the radical extremists had nothing on one curvy little woman with a wicked edge to her tongue…. a woman that had somehow tangled herself around his cold heart.

*~*

Melody Song Reardon was done with men. After learning that the man she’d been going to marry was no better than a corporate Casanova in and out of the boardroom and bedroom, she’d decided that love just wasn’t in the cards for her. Which was fine. She was young, smart, and capable… and better yet, she had a dream and a plan: Opening her very own book/yarn store – Hooks & Books. She had the brains. She had the building. And now, she had a freaking bodyguard compliments of her interfering older brother?

She didn’t care how mouthwateringly handsome her so-called savior was; she didn’t need another controlling man in her life telling her what to do. At least, she hadn’t needed one…. until those nerve wracking hang-ups and strange notes took an ominous turn. Now, somebody wants her dead and the only thing standing between her and the Grim Reaper is one seriously gorgeous man named Callum Valentine. Falling in love again in the middle of her own personal apocalypse hadn’t been the plans…then again, the great thing about a plan is that it can change on a dime!

angies-review

I received this book for an honest review by the authors.

If you haven’t read anything by these ladies you are so missing out.  The characters crack me up!!  I mean they always have the best character banter in their novels.  I am literally cracking up at the scenes!!!  These ladies are crazy funny!!

This book is about Melody.  She found out her DB Fiancée was screwing her best friends/bridesmaids and half the town for the last 5 years.  She literally throws the ring and runs to her granny’s house to start her life over.  The town is a small town and everyone knows everyone but Melody is ready to start fresh at 30.  Melody’s brother RJ is worried because she keeps getting strange hang up calls and her ex Brad has vowed to win her back.  He asks his retired army buddy Callum to step in and help his sister out.

The fireworks between the two at their first meeting only get better as each scene goes.  Then the 2nd time they have an altercation, I. WAS. LAUGHING so hard at the situation.  Cal is essentially laying claim to Melody in front of her ex.  Melody is a strong woman who lost her sense of HER while with Brad so having an alpha “MINE” her didn’t go so well.  Seriously loved the chemistry.

As the novel goes we see the two forming a “relationship” of sorts.  Cal is up front that Mel is the woman for him but she is stubborn and is resisting him at every turn.  The Christmas scene they share made my heart tingle for the two but when they took a trip to Nashville….Sigh……Yeah I was in love with Cal too.

The story is about the two of them butting heads but also wondering who is trying to kill Mel. If her ex isn’t, who could be???  It was a great “who done it” and in true fashion when the killer is revealed there is total comedy to it.

excerpt

Cal watched her another minute. “You’re a stubborn little ball of fury, aren’t you?” he asked as he watched her try to attach the tool to the lug nut, wincing as the metal slipped for the second time in a row.

Melody took a deep breath before she slowly turned to face her tormenter. “I was brought up believing that a girl should be able to take care of herself. I forgot that lesson for a little while and almost made a mistake I could never undo with a man I’d rather forget. I’m not ever going to repeat that experience again. So, to answer your question, yes, I’m a stubborn little ball of fury. Now, will you please go on your merry way?”

Cal finally gave into the urge and laughed, earning himself a cold look from the woman currently on her knees. “Careful, Princess. I’m gonna get a complex here because it’s beginning to feel like you don’t like me very much,” he taunted her with a wink. Seeing her press her lips together tightly, he knew she was fighting the urge to scream bloody murder at him. Squatting beside her, he met her fiery gaze. “Cat got your tongue, Pretty Girl?”

“No,” she declared with a shake of her head as she looked from him to his jacked up truck. “Do you mind if I ask you a question?”

“Ask away, darlin’,” he invited silkily with a ready nod. “I’m an open book,” he declared, holding his muscular arms out to his sides. And it was true. The book on him was open; it just happened to be written in code, he thought to himself as he gave himself a mental pat on the back for his own wittiness.

Melody offered him a deceptively sweet smile. “Is it true that men use big trucks to compensate for smaller endowments in, well,… other more intimate areas?” she asked, dropping her voice to a conversational whisper as she gave his crotch a rather pointed look.

Cal guffawed. “Are you asking me if I’ve got a tiny dick, Princess? Because I can tell you with a hundred percent honesty that the size of my cock and the size of my truck are very directly related. They’re both big and bad, but if you don’t believe me, I’d be pleased to give you a private showing.”

Melody’s jaw dropped at his audacity. “You… you just can’t say things like that!” she blustered, blushing furiously as he laughed in her face.

“I just did. Besides, you started it,” he accused, propping his hands on his narrow hips as he leaned forward and stared her down. “Don’t dish it out if you can’t handle having it spoon-fed back to you, Princess.” Damn, Cal privately mused, he hadn’t had this much fun with a woman with her clothes on in years. He couldn’t help wondering how exciting she’d be with her clothes off. He definitely be making it a point to find that out as soon as humanly possible.

“I revert to my earlier statement. You are a pig,” she reiterated with a disgusted shake of her head, her ponytail flying over one shoulder to smack him in the face as she moved.

“Maybe, but you’re just mad that you can’t seem to get one-up on me. Not used to a man that will stand his ground and fight with you?” he asked, fishing for a response from her. He wanted to know just how much she’d reveal about her ex-fiancé in casual conversation. Her brother didn’t think there’d been any kind of physical abuse and based on her reactions to him, he tended to think RJ was right, but he wanted to be sure. Because if he was wrong, she wouldn’t need his protection because he’d simply kill the motherfucker and be done with it.

“My former fiancé didn’t fight. It was too low-class a thing for him to do. He used to call our arguments spirited debates. My ass, they were debates. Freaking moron. A fight is a fight, right?” she asked as she grunted with exertion while she tried to pry one of the lug nuts loose.

“Right,” he agreed with a nod, sighing as her tool slipped again. “Politicians have….what did you call ‘em? Spirited debates? Real men and women fight.”

“See, that’s what I thought, too. But maybe that was the problem,” Melody muttered as she twisted the tire iron sharply, silently cursing the tight bolt. “I always did think Bradley had political ambitions. God knows that it’s what his dear old mommy and daddy wanted for him,” she continued to growl through gritted teeth as she twisted the tire iron violently. “Eureka!” she shouted when the bolt moved a few millimeters. “Did you see that? It moved,” she yelped, as her body made a tiny celebratory shimmy.

Cal chuckled softly at her little dance. “Sounds like this Bradley fella was kinda a douche,” he surmised, carefully watching Melody’s face.

“That is the understatement of the frickin’ year. Heck, maybe the decade, too,” Melody muttered, lifting one hand to take a swipe at her sweaty forehead.

Edging toward her, Cal tried to make a grab for the tool in her hand. “Seriously, babe. Let me do that for you,” he demanded gruffly, afraid she was going to either damage the wheel well or herself with her rough use of the tool.

“I’m about done warnin’ you, Stranger, so I’ll try and be real clear one last time. You try to touch my tire iron again and I’m gonna introduce it to the side of that hard head of yours. Repeatedly,” she informed him grimly while she desperately tried to loosen the second lug nut. “And, for the record, let me just state that I am most certainly NOT your babe,” she huffed, panting with exertion.

He could see her energy waning and shook his head. “You’re completely right, you aren’t my babe,” he agreed, covering Melody’s icy hands with his as she growled fiercely at the tire. “Right now, you’re more of my pain in the ass, woman,” he continued, his hands tightening on hers as he helped her turn the lug nut. “This’d be so much easier if you’d just let me do it,” he stated again, afraid he was going to hurt her hand by squeezing it too hard. “Honest to God, sassy, sweet and stubborn is not the sexy combination I thought it would be on you.”teaser

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I was so excited to get this book because I loved Monroe and Miller’s story.  When we met Amelia and Tanner never would I have imagined their book to be so full of twists and turns, heart ache and joy!!

Amelia and Tanner are the ying to the others yang.  They are an oil and water couple who actually find a way to make it work until Tanner leaves our girl.  When Amelia drops her bomb on him…..WOW  The first chapter sets the tone of the book…CRAZY DRAMA!!

Amelia and Tanner have to find a way to co-exist and co-parent their daughter while Amelia is still sore over Tanner rejecting her for Marissa.  What Amelia doesn’t know is why he rejected her and when we find out, his good guy character is shown through and through.

Tanner has loved Amelia but knows she deserves better then him.  She is high class and he is working class.  He has treated her wrong at every turn of the imagination yet he still wants her and she still want him.

The couple have a lot to overcome with Marissa, Amelia’s new boyfriend Dan, the couples insane chemistry and even dealing with their daughter.  When they finally seem to find the right time and right path everything and everyone gets in the way.  My tummy was hurting and my heart was so mad!!

The end of the novel was great.  The epilogue was awesome.  I did feel it might have been a little bit rushed but it didn’t stop me from cheering everything that happened to the couple.

SBR Excerpt

I stood, looking up at the tower window and saw Dylan peeking out watching me as I contemplated our new life together. Last night had been one of the best times in my life and I felt in my heart that it was only going to get better. Dylan swore he was the lucky one, but in reality, it was me that was lucky. He had helped heal the scars of my past, showing me true love and teaching me to forgive and let go of the past.

I walked along the riverbank, the breeze catching my breath. Summer in Ireland was different from back home. I closed my eyes enjoying the peace and quiet that it afforded me. The birds chirped and the sound of the water brought me a peacefulness that I hadn’t felt since before my accident as a teenager. I was no longer afraid of what the future held but knew that Dylan had demons of his own that needed to be dealt with. He had suffered so much loss in his younger years, making me wonder if that’s what his nightmares were about. I’m not sure he even realized that he was having them. Whenever one would strike, I would hold and comfort him as he cried.

I heard footsteps behind me and turned to my right to see who was there. No one appeared and then I felt the heat of his breath on my left. I knew it was Dylan; I could always sense when he was near.

book blurb

Sterling wanted to believe in his marriage; he wanted to believe that he had disappointed his wife for the last time. That might’ve been possible, if he hadn’t met the young, beautiful and willing Hanna. This time however, he wasn’t the aggressor. Yet as he allowed his heart to be captured, he knew that life would never be the same.

Sterling’s trip to the mountains of Colorado leads him straight into the arms of Hanna, the Innkeeper’s Daughter.

excerpt

“You are really a great, teacher, Hanna,” I said when we sat down inside the resort’s restaurant. I was actually surprised. Although it was difficult, she made it somewhat simpler. “You make it enjoyable.”

“Thank you.” Hanna lowered her head, pushing her hair behind her left ear. She slowly raised her head to retort. “That’s because we’ve just started. You just wait until we get on the slopes.” Her bottom lip twitched as she spoke, then she turned away after staring a few seconds too long.

Her shyness what refreshing; welcoming even. I could not help but stare at the wide-eyed beauty. She seemed to have a great personality. When we talked, I could not help but notice her features. She could easily pass for her mid-twenties instead of only nineteen; her bone structure was so developed. What I noted the most was her mouth. It was exceptional; pink, pouty and full.

White icing from a cupcake clung to her top lip, though she hadn’t become aware of it. And for a split second I was jealous of a non-living element. She noticed me staring at her lips and licked the sweetness off, trying not to stare as she did so. I wanted to reach across the table and kiss her. Everything she did was seductive. There was an air about her that pulled me in, but I didn’t even know her. Yes, I’d crossed the line before; that was an unexpected mistake. This one was staring me in the face, daring me to take another risk.

Excerpt

PASTIf you told him a few years ago, he would go to the Prom and enjoy it, he would’ve laughed. Yet, here he was lounging on the bed watching television in the hotel room he and Aibhlinn had rented. Their friends had started off partying with them before bowing out to retreat to their own rooms or head on home.

She was still dressed in the blush pink gown that hugged her curves, and belled out into a skirt that brushed the floor. He’d ditched his tux jacket, unbuttoned his top buttons and rolled up his sleeves hours ago.

“We really are morbid you know,” Aibhlinn commented.

“Why?”

“Watching Carrie on prom night,” she said.

“Well, no one dumped pig’s blood on you, so I think we’re good.”

“The night’s still young,” she stated dryly.

Enzo laughed and shook his head. “Like I would ever let that happen.” He felt fiercely protective of his best friend. The girl had cracked opened his chest cavity, wormed her way into his heart…brought him kicking and screaming out of the darkness and into the light. She’d done something few people could, gained his trust. He studied her as she beamed.

Her blue-green eyes sparkled and he could see the small flecks of green inherited from her father. Her thick hair tumbled around her slender oval face in insane curls, and she glowed. Her full lips were tempting him. Bare of lipstick they glistened and glimmered a light shade of pink. Suddenly, he wanted to know what that lip-gloss tasted like, what she tasted like.

“Enz?” she said.

“Shhh.” He leaned forward and cupped her face.

She went still, but didn’t move away.

He took it as permission. He pressed their lips together, and his world exploded around him. She tasted like sugar, sweet, and addictive. He couldn’t get enough. He tilted his head for better accent and she gasped. He slipped his tongue into her mouth.

It was akin to sticking his tongue into a light socket full of pleasure endorphins. Energy rushed through him weaving a seductive spell. His pants grew too tight, and his hunger for more flared. She whimpered, and he moaned. The sound of her surrender tasted better than any of the pleasure filled cries he’d wrung from other girls.

His heart raced, and his hand shook slightly as he brushed her hair way from her face. It was baby soft and smelled like flowers. He’d fallen into heaven. He lowered her body to the bed. Pressed chest to chest, their eyes locked and he knew he was in way too deep. I love her. The words jolted him from his lust. He pulled back, breathing hard. “As good as this feels and as amazing as this would be with you, I just can’t. It would ruin what we have and if I ever lost you, I’d lose my mind. You’re the only female I can trust. I need you to stay that. Do you understand? It’s nothing against you, and everything for you. I’m a bastard and I know it. You deserve romance, flowers and a deep commitment. I can’t give you that, babe.”

“Who says it’s what I want,” she said.

Enzo smiled and brushed the stray strands of hair behind her ear. “It’s what every girl wants, whether they realize it or not. Trust me, I’m older and wiser.”

“Oh fuck you and your six months,” she said with a shaky laugh.

Her eyes looked glossy and he knew if he saw a mirror, his would be the same. If he’d been a better person, someone capable of love the way she deserved, he would’ve continued. He cursed the bitch of mother and the way she’d twisted his dark soul. She broke something inside him, he would never be able to fix. He rested his forehead against hers, and tightened his hold, knowing he would never again get to experience this level of intimacy with the one woman he loved as much as he was able to.

“Besides Notes and Roses being a beautiful name, Author Rozenn Scott has written a beautiful and heart warming story.” – 5 Star Review Cutting Muse Blog Review

Chapter One
Megan Campbell stepped away from the cash register of Notes & Roses and leaned against the back counter. She put her right hand in her jeans pocket and, as carefully and unobtrusively as possible, she removed her cell phone and scrolled to Justin’s name. What should she send to her brother? Help sounded like a good start. Or possibly, there’s a man in my shop and I think he’s drunk or stoned.
Yep, send something like that to Justin, and he would come in, all guns blazing. Then he’d pin the weird guy to the floor and read him his rights. And the man currently staring at a wall didn’t look dangerous, just lost, homeless maybe?
Something more considered then, like, there is a vagrant in here, and he needs help, what should I do? The man moved a little. Away from her side of the store, the ‘roses’ part of the setup, and over to the ‘notes’ side. He was peering at the shelves; a collection of stationery and household bits and pieces like cushions and local crafts. He stumbled a little, turned to the side and looked up at the display of posters on the far wall. Landscapes of Vermont; rivers, small towns and red high-sided barns with gently rolling hills of emerald green.
“That’s wrong,” he said.
“Sorry?” Megan asked, but he didn’t reply.
He’s talking to the wall now. Should she add that to the text as well? This was going to end up being one hell of a lot of typing to explain what he was doing. Despite how odd it all looked, the visitor wasn’t threatening her. Also, Rachel would be back soon, maybe between them they could sort this out?
He hadn’t even spoken to her, but something wasn’t right. Maybe it was the way he’d been standing; his hands in fists at his sides, staring now at the new Valentine wall display of flowers and hearts. Maybe it was the way he was dressed; dark jeans caked in mud, heavy boots that had tracked in the same mud. Not to mention the black hoodie with the hood partially hiding his face from her view.
Or maybe it was the despair in his hunched shoulders, the utter defeat in the way he had to support himself to stand.
Whatever it was, Megan was faced with two options. Talk to the strange man in her shop while she was alone in here, or call in reinforcements in case things went south.
Her visitor moved, not his feet, but his fists, unclenching and bringing his hands up to knuckle his eyes and then cover them. Megan’s cop brother liked to explain these things to her, but she didn’t need his help to recognize when despair in someone turned to anger.
She sent the standard 911 text, startled when she looked up and saw the stranger had stepped closer to her while she’d been distracted.
“Where am I?” he asked, his voice very soft.
“You’re in my shop.”
He shook his head. “I need the music. Someone took it, and I need it.”
Okay, this was so not going the way she wanted it to go. He was incoherent. Maybe he was homeless and just needed a place to get out of the persistent snow that had plagued Stanford Creek the last few days. He’d evidently been somewhere slushy and muddy if his clothes were anything to go by.
“I don’t understand, sir; what music do you need?” she asked, and waited for him to acknowledge her question. Instead, he took another, shaky, step forward, and covered his eyes again. “Hello? Can I help you?” she repeated when he didn’t look at her.
That finally got his attention, and his hands came down, and she got her first clear look at his eyes and face. What she saw had her reaching to send another text. He had blood on him smeared down from his temple into his wild beard, and his blue eyes were bright with something. Drugs maybe? Long dark hair hid some of his features, and he looked like he was about to keel over.
“Where’s the music?” he mumbled, his voice low and urgent. He gripped his temples hard and stumbled back, knocking a display of greeting cards to the floor. The sound was a loud clatter in the otherwise quiet room. “Shit… I didn’t…”
“Sir?” This time, she was within reaching distance as he rounded on her, his lips pulled back in a snarl—or a grimace of pain, she couldn’t be entirely sure. Whatever, it wasn’t the look of someone who wanted to be spoken to. Time to leave. She glanced at the front door, then the fire exit. He was between her and the only possible ways out, and she was trapped. When she focused back on him, all she saw was a situation that could get out of hand. He was a good six inches taller than her five-nine, broad and built, with tattoos curling around his wrist, disappearing up under the sleeve of the hoodie.
Everything about him looked wrong. He didn’t move again, or even acknowledge her; all he did was stare with bright sapphire eyes, focused on a point behind her. Scary and intense and so damned fixated with his expression in that scowl.
“What happened?” he groaned and covered his eyes again. “Call… Zee…”
She texted without looking, only glancing at the screen briefly to make sure she was sending another text to her brother and not some random person on her list. 911. Again. The standard sibling instruction for help me right the hell now, reserved for having one of her brothers rescue her from one of her many dreadful first dates. Garrett wasn’t even in town, so there was little point texting him, and Justin may not even be in the sheriff’s office. She hoped to hell he was, though, and had read her message. She’d know soon enough because the small sheriff’s office was close.
And still the stranger stood there, staring at her. At least, he hadn’t moved any closer.
He closed his eyes and wiped at the blood that was trickling down his face, looking down at his hand and staring at the red that streaked his skin. She thought she heard a sob, but couldn’t be sure. Compassion welled inside her. Vagrant or not, dressed in soiled clothes and with the hood up, he didn’t have to be a criminal.
“Sir? Do you need help?” She held out her hand, but he stepped closer to her and damn it, she may have had self-defense training, but she wasn’t stupid. If the man was hopped up on drugs, she had to stay out of reach. The door opened, and Justin stepped in, all uniform and pissed-off attitude.
“Two 911’s? This had better be good, Megs.”
Megan inclined her head to the man who Justin evidently hadn’t seen in his dramatic entrance. Justin could handle himself, and he had a gun, he’d know what to do.
“What the hell?” Justin said as he assessed the situation, his hand automatically resting on his holstered weapon.
“I think it’s drugs,” she said loud enough for Justin to hear. The man looked at Justin and then to her, before shaking his head a little.
“No.” The voice was raspy, little more than a growl. “Not those.” He appeared to be struggling to talk, and he pressed his hands to each side of his head. “Just the music; Zee will know,” he added, but his voice slurred, and he coughed and doubled over.
Justin pulled his weapon and held it to one side, his other hand held in front of him as he stepped closer. “Sir? Are you hurt?”
Megan saw her brother’s hand on the sidearm, the other placating and suggesting and warning at the same time. She’d seen him stand like this when he broke up the fight at the drugstore. Not that he’d drawn his weapon then; he’d dealt with it by intimidation alone, because everyone involved lived in the town and no one messed with the sheriff. Megan looked at her brother, who teased her, who’d hidden her dolls and pulled her pigtails as a kid, but who was now in a situation that was serious. He was all business.
“What’s your name, sir?” Justin asked.
The stranger stepped back from him, straight into a pile of notebooks this time. The shelf shuddered and some of the display tilted. The movement translated into Justin grabbing the man’s hoodie to stop him falling as he flailed and attempted to stay upright.
He took a swing at Justin, who ducked and swerved. The attempted hit missed Justin by a mile, and the man followed the momentum he had begun, smacked his fist against a shelf edge, and collapsed in a heap on the floor. Then he didn’t move, was absolutely still. Justin holstered his weapon and crouched next to the prone form of the hooded man, checking for a pulse and then talking into his radio.
“Dispatch, 390D, medical assistance required at Notes & Roses.”
Megan didn’t hear the response; she came out from behind the counter and stood next to her brother. The adrenaline that had flooded her to deal with this was beginning to ebb, and she went down in the same crouch. The hood had fallen back and exposed his hair. The stranger was young; maybe the same age as her, and a long cut on his temple oozed fresh blood. Thinking on her feet, she located a clean tea towel from the small kitchen in the back and as an afterthought grabbed the first aid box. There was nothing more than band aids and small bandages in it, but there may be something in there to press against the wound, something sterile.
Justin took the box and the towel and pressed the cloth against the man’s temple.
“Who is he?” Justin asked.
Megan frowned at the unconscious man. “I have no idea.”
“What was he doing in the shop?”
Megan glanced at her brother and resisted the urge to give him a sarcastic sister-type comeback. She needed to be professional.
“He came in and stood in the ‘notes’ side, staring at the wall.”
“And he didn’t say anything?”
“Something about wanting music and the letter Z. And when I asked him if he needed help, he turned and stared at me like he didn’t know where he was.”
“What the hell, Megan? You talked to him?”
“Well, what was I supposed to do? He was a customer, and looked like he needed help.”
“What did I tell you about drug addicts?” Justin snapped.
“The same as attackers, drunks, and anyone else who got anywhere near me, call you. I did that.”
The man on the floor moved, his eyes flickering open and staring up at Justin and Megan. “I don’t feel…” He never finished the sentence, his eyes closing again.
All Megan could think was, whoever he was, he had pretty eyes, the kind of blue that jumped out at you and screamed gorgeous. She couldn’t see much of his face, covered as it was with a bushy beard and blood.
“Should we find his ID or something?”
“SOP is not to go searching in drug addicts’ pockets,” Justin said with exaggerated patience.
“You think he’s a drug addict?”
The door chimed again, but it wasn’t the paramedic yet. Instead her business partner and cousin, Rachel, stood in the door, her jaw dropped and the cold of the rain blustering in behind her.
“Shut the door,” Justin and Megan said at the same time. Rachel closed the door with exaggerated care, and her expression didn’t change.
“Why is there a man lying on the floor of our shop?” she managed. Then she stepped closer, staring down at John Doe, and her eyebrows climbed before she paled and grabbed hold of the nearest display. “Shit, there’s so much blood. Is he dead?” Like he’d heard her speak, the man coughed and curled in on himself on one side, muttering something, and she stumbled backward with a yelp.
“He’s clearly not dead,” Justin said. “Drugs, head wound, we don’t know yet.” Then he spoke into his radio. “Dispatch, do we have an ETA on the paramedics?”
“Three minutes out.”
“10-4, dispatch.”
“Is he bleeding out?” Rachel asked, her hand on her chest and her skin pale. Megan frowned; they really should get Rachel out of here. She’d never liked blood, not since the incident where she’d broken her arm in kindergarten and the bone had pierced the skin.
“Not enough blood for that,” Justin said.
“Do we know who he is?” Rachel asked. “Should we check his wallet or something? He could be here with someone?” She glanced out the shop window as if expecting the man’s friends or family to be searching for him.
“I can’t look for his wallet yet,” Justin explained. “SOP with suspected addicts.”
“SOP?” Rachel half whispered as an aside.
“Standard operating procedure,” Megan whispered back. “The guy could have needles on him.”
“What about the recovery position?” Rachel pointed out. “Should we, at least, move him?”
Justin indicated the unconscious man with a wave of his hand. “Think he already did it himself.”
Then in silence they stood and waited for the paramedics to arrive, and all that time Megan stared down at the stranger, memorizing every bump and scratch on his face. What a waste. He could be so handsome, almost pretty, with those stunning sky eyes and the plump lips. He’d be a killer if he smiled, she thought.
“He doesn’t smell,” Rachel commented, even though she wrinkled her nose. She gestured at him. “And those jeans? They’re an expensive brand you know. So he’s probably not homeless.”
Megan didn’t feel much like discussing the unconscious man. She just wanted the help to get here soon.
The paramedics arrived and in a flurry of motion, they asked rapid questions of Megan, which she couldn’t answer in full. ‘Did he have a fit? Did he choke?’ She answered as best she could and hoped that was enough for them to have some idea what had happened. They checked John Doe’s vitals, hefted him onto a gurney, and left, all without the man regaining consciousness. Justin followed soon after, giving Megan a quick hug and extracting a promise from her to stay safe, and then it was Rachel and Megan alone in the shop.
Rachel looked anywhere except at the blood and Megan knew she had to get her out of the shop. “You go up to Carter’s and get some fresh coffee.”
“You need help,” Rachel began. She looked torn as she gestured at the floor.
“I’ll clear this up. Go.”
“What if someone else comes in?”
“Another vagrant covered in blood?” Megan smiled as she said it. She hoped she’d had her full quota of vagrants for this year.
“You never know,” Rachel said, frowning.
“Go.”
Rachel looked at the door and back at Megan, as if she were expecting another strange man to come in while she was out and was worried about leaving her. Megan went back to the small storage room at the back of the store. She pulled out the mop and bucket and the cleaning supplies and by the time she came back out Rachel had gone. She wasn’t surprised. Evidently alongside her phobia about blood, Rachel had analyzed the situation with her rational, logical approach and had decided Megan could manage another strange man collapsing on their floor if she had to. She cleaned up the smears of scarlet, the tracked in mud, and realigned all the notebooks and stationery on the knocked shelf. While she worked, all she could think was despite the shock and drama of what had happened, the man with the beautiful sapphire eyes hadn’t seemed dangerous to her.
Confused, high or drunk, desperate, traumatized, wet, and muddy, maybe. But certainly not dangerous.

Logan
“Logan, babe, we’re late. The car is here. Everyone is waiting,” Roman calls out from the other side of the bathroom door.
I grin at my reflection when he rattles the handle, checking to see if I’ve yet to unlock it.
            I haven’t.
“I’ll be out in a second, baby!”
“Well, hurry up. Daph is blowing up my phone.”
“Maybe I’d be ready if someone hadn’t decided we needed one more round in bed to close out the year,” I say loudly, putting in my second dangly, silver earring. Once it’s fastened and secure, I lift my eyebrows and wait for his response. I hear him clear his throat, but he doesn’t say a word. My grin grows wider as I suppress a giggle. “Yup, that’s what I thought,” I mutter under my breath.
I take one last look at my face under the bright light above the hotel mirror and decide that I’m satisfied with my handiwork. My green eyes look smoldering with the smoky eyeshadow effect I managed to pull off in half the time I usually require, and my lashes—coated in black mascara—make them look big and beautiful. I dusted on a hint of shimmering blush, just for fun, and my lips are coated in clear lipgloss.
Roman loves my lips. Always has. They need no color to draw his attention.
Though, something tells me he won’t be thinking too much about my lips tonight.
It’s our first New Years Eve as a married couple, and I can hardly wait to ring in the new year on the arm of the man I love more than life itself. I really didn’t care one way or the other if we found a big party to go to, but my in-laws made the decision fairly simple.
Tonight, Neal and Beth are taking Rome and me, along with Trevor and Daphne, to the White Rose Gala at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The proceeds of the event are donated to charity, which explains why Beth was so insistent that we tag along. I couldn’t tell you how many committees and charity events she’s apart of in her local community. In any case, when they offered to buy us all tickets and put us up in a hotel for the night, Roman and I couldn’t think of a good reason to say no. And even though Daphne’s relationship with her parents is still far from warm and fuzzy, it didn’t take much for us to convince her that she and Trevor should be there, too. Harvey and Grace were a huge help, offering to keep Care-Bear for the night.
As soon as it was confirmed that we would be spending our night at a gala, I started hunting for the perfect dress. I knew that I wanted something sexy, and I didn’t give two shits about the fact that it’s the middle of winter in Colorado. After a bit of online searching, I found exactly what I wanted. Tonight, I’ll most certainly be Roman’s eye candy.
The blue dress has a fairly modest front, the fabric hugging my C-cups as it clings to my chest and my thighs. My legs will definitely be on display tonight, as the fabric stops mere inches below my backside. Speaking of my back—the front of my dress is held in place by the halter top, which connects to a silver chain between my shoulder blades. The chain is attached to either side of my dress, securing the fabric around my breasts, as there is nothing else to hold it up. The dress is just about completely backless, the fabric of the skirt clinging to my body just below the small of my back. It’s tight, the seams cinched on both sides and straight down the middle, making my ass look fantastic.
I adorn my wrist with a simple silver bracelet, given to me by my parents ages ago, and slip my feet into my new stilettos. They are a glittery silver with rhinestones adhered to the back of the heels. They’re hot as hell, and they’ll make it easier to steal kisses from my man all night.
“Logan!” he calls, rapping his knuckles against the barrier that separates us. “Open the door. Now.”
“Relax. I’m coming!” I double check the pins in my hair one last time, ensuring that tonight’s curls will stay draped over my right shoulder, and then I grab my clutch and head for the door.
I shut the light out, knowing that if I leave it on, he’ll see my back in the reflection of the mirror. I’ve been keeping tonight’s attire a secret. I wanted to surprise him. All of this is for him. The only man’s attention I want ishis. I know, in this dress, I can guarantee two things.
First—my husband will be touching me all night. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that he will not let me out of his sight. Even with the two carat pink sapphire on my finger, he’ll insist on sending a message to anyone who looks our way that I am his.
Second—I’m sure that we’ll start this year off with a bang. Me, in this dress, in a room full of people, it’ll drive him wild. Later, when he takes me, he won’t be gentle or sweet. At least not the first time. My heart races with giddy anticipation just thinking about it.
I suck in a deep breath and blow it out quickly before I unlock the handle and open the door.

I’m a born and bred Coloradan. While I now reside in Virginia, the land of the Rocky Mountains is where I’ve left a piece of my heart and where my characters come to life. When I’m not writing I’m reading; when I’m not reading I’m writing…you know how it goes! I also enjoy cooking, baking, crocheting, and jigsaw puzzles. Basically, I’m an old soul with a young heart, nonchalantly waiting for my prince to come.

Chapter One
The glittering lights of the aurora wrapped around Zanya’s body, spinning in a cyclone of ghostly blue, emerald green, and purple. The light in her chest, signifying her power as the Stone Guardian, beamed with life.
Jayden stepped back into the darkness, nearly tripping over his own feet, unable to tear his gaze from Zanya. The lights bonded souls, both in this world and in the afterlife. If they were touching Zanya, it could only mean one thing.
She was bonding with someone, and that someone wasn’t him.
The crowds near the base of the temples gathered around their sacred fires with offerings of jade and maize. They cheered and chanted, beating on drums and dancing like the aboriginal Mayans once had, carrying out the tradition for thousands of years.
Jayden backed away from Zanya, nearly stumbling on protruding rocks half-buried in the grassy hill. Everyone in their group waited with wide eyes, their chests puffed out as if they held their breath, waiting for her soul mate to be revealed.
Jayden’s gut tightened as the woman he would die for—had died for—reached for Arwan’s hand.
It should have been him holding her close.
It should have been him kissing her.
He swallowed against a dry throat. It didn’t make any sense. Arwan was half underworlder. Bonding with Riyata was forbidden. Hell, it was impossible. The two bloodlines simply weren’t compatible.
Zanya’s mother, Eleuia, trembled with fury. “I mean it,” she demanded, her sharp gaze trained on Zanya. “Choose him,” she jabbed her finger at Arwan, “or us. Because I won’t allow that thing back in my house.”
“For the gods’ sake, Ellie,” Renato pleaded.
“No!” She spun and glared at her brother. “You’ve done enough damage as it is. She is my daughter.”
Jayden watched Zanya. She was so damn beautiful in that dress. He clenched his fists.
“You can’t be serious,” Zanya said, shaking her head. “How can you ask me to do that?” Her chest rose and fell with every quickened breath, her fingers now interlocked with Arwan’s.
She held him so close, as if letting him go would ruin her. For the first time, Jay believed it actually would. She was bonded. Any chance he’d had with Zanya was lost.
A collection of cheers shook the air. Jayden looked at the crowd in the valley below. He’d almost forgotten where he was. With the lights retreating into the sky, the winter solstice celebrations had begun. Newly bonded couples were hugged and congratulated, though the Riyata group was far out of the crowd’s reach.
“How can you guys just stand there and let her do this?” Zanya’s desperate tone brought his focus back to her. It took a moment to realize she was speaking directly to him.
He parted his lips, but couldn’t speak. He couldn’t…wouldn’t stand up for them. Not while everything he wanted was torn away. Not when he still loved her.
Zanya’s gaze shifted to her best friend, Tara, who walked toward the newly bonded pair. “Yeah, this is messed up.” Tara reached Zanya’s side and faced the rest of the group, then crossed her arms over her chest. “They don’t have any control over this stuff.” She stared pointedly at the lights in the sky. “There’s got to be something more going on here. Something you guys missed.”
“Missed?” Eleuia’s tone turned deadly. She stepped toward Zanya, who shifted in front of Arwan as if she were protecting him. “I didn’t spend all this time hiding and running, to return to a piece of underworld garbage like him,” she spat, glaring at Arwan. “He’ll ruin our kind’s only hope at a future. He is the reason I missed you growing up, Zanya. Why your father isn’t here anymore.”
Zanya flinched and dropped her head. Waves of her hair drifted in the warm breeze. “No, Mom.” She lifted her chin, revealing a soft sheen in her eyes. “My father died because you fell in love with someone you weren’t supposed to.” She turned to face Arwan and took both of his hands.
Jayden’s throat tightened and each breath grew harder to take as dread bore deep into his gut. He raked his fingers through his hair. Shit. He had to get the hell away. With Zanya bonded and her mom ready to light a torch and wave a pitchfork, things were about to get ugly. He’d be forced to choose. They all would. It was an impossible ultimatum.
If he chose Eleuia’s side, it would mean turning his back on Zanya forever, because it would mean rejecting her bond with Arwan, and therefore, rejecting everything she was from this moment on.
But if he chose to stand by her, it would mean turning his back on his own heart.
Jayden looked away, at the sky, the ground, anywhere but at Zanya. He caught a glimpse of Hawa studying him. She held his gaze for a split second before he looked away.
He couldn’t stay if he had to watch Zanya be with someone else, and he’d be damned if he spent another second as the pathetic ex-boyfriend who couldn’t win her back.
Jayden analyzed his surroundings. The ruins of Tikal were crowded with parked cars for the celebration. Even the taxi drivers had abandoned their cabs to participate in the solstice.
He slipped away from the group and peered in car windows, one vehicle at a time. If he left on foot, traveling to…anywhere-but-here, would take twice as long. He needed a ride.
He paused when he spotted a pair of keys dangling from the ignition of a taxi. Bingo. He slipped into the driver’s seat and turned the key. The engine roared to life. He took a moment to draw in a deep breath. Leaving was the only answer. Maybe now that his heart no longer beat, he was incapable of a real bond. He had to look out for himself. No one else would. He clutched the steering wheel tighter.
When he glanced in the rearview mirror, he was able to see the others, still crowded in a tight group, none of them realizing he was gone. Zanya backed away from her mother, drawing even closer to Arwan.
He ground his teeth. To hell with this.
Just as he shifted the car into drive, the passenger door flew open and Hawa launched herself inside, then slammed the door behind her. “Where do you think you’re off to?”
He exhaled sharply. “Get out.”
“Uh, not happening. I saw how you looked back there. There’s no way I’m letting you take off alone.”
He scoffed. “What do you care?”
“Who said I do?”
“Then get out.” He leaned over her and pushed the door open.
Hawa bit her lip for a second while she watched him. “Look.” She shut the door a second time. “I know how bad it sucks to watch the person you care about be with someone else.”
Jayden relaxed his grip on the steering wheel. He’d almost forgotten that she and Peter used to be together, and she’d been forced to watch while the healer fell for Tara.
Hawa shrugged. “Plus, it’ll be nice to get the hell out of the jungle for a while.” She gestured to the path of crushed grass that passed for a makeshift road. “Well? Are we going or what?”
He hesitated, glanced once more in the rearview mirror, and then slammed his foot on the gas pedal. The rear end fishtailed before the tires bit into the ground.
He didn’t look back.
A blur of green streaked by as he sped out of the jungle. Anger bubbled inside of him, paired with a deep humiliation. How could he have been so stupid? He never would have gotten Zanya back. It was just his luck. Always the underdog. Always the loser.
The tension in his muscles wound tighter until he couldn’t stand it anymore. He balled his fist and punched the center of the steering wheel as hard as he could, honking the horn several times in the process. “That wasn’t supposed to fucking happen!”
The car swerved and Hawa grabbed the wheel, preventing them from flying into the trees. “Whoa! Either pull over or calm the hell down before you get both of us killed!”
Jayden punched the steering wheel one more time, and then relieved some pressure from the gas. The car slowed to a reasonable speed.
“You good?” Hawa cautiously let go of the wheel.
He nodded, taking back control of the car. Both of them were silent the rest of the drive out of the jungle. He needed the time to think, and thankfully, Hawa wasn’t one of those girls who couldn’t shut up if her life depended on it.
He slowed when they reached a paved road, making the ride smoother and a little easier to keep his shit together. At the moment, everything about the jungle pissed him off.
“You do realize when we get in town, the cops will probably be looking for this taxi, right?” Hawa slouched in the passenger seat and kicked one of her heavy leather boots up onto the dashboard, bobbing her foot left to right. “Unless the owner of the cab is too wasted to realize it’s been taken until tomorrow morning. That would buy us a couple of hours.”
That was the best-case scenario. It would give him enough time to figure out what he was going to do next, because now, all he knew for sure was he wouldn’t go back to Renato’s house. If Zanya was still there, she’d be there with Arwan. And if she wasn’t, there was no reason to stick around anymore. It was a lose-lose scenario—the story of his entire fucking life.
“So, where to, el capitán?”
The muscles in his shoulders tensed at Hawa’s voice. “I don’t really know.”
“Sweet.” She flipped on the FM radio and fiddled with the stations until Latin music thumped from the speakers. She leaned back again, mouthing the lyrics.
He glanced at her. “That’s it? You don’t care that I have no idea where the hell we’re going?”
She shrugged. “Not really. I’m always in for a good adventure.”
“I’m not going back to Renato’s house.”
She yawned. “Let’s roll down the windows.” She leaned forward and used the hand crank to let the night air pour into the cab, then sat back, relaxing into her seat.
Since when did she want to be around him? She’d always just been the sprinter—able to travel at unimaginable speeds. She never cared about him. In fact, she gave off a screw you vibe every second of the day. Suddenly she was up for a road trip? Maybe she’d decide to split when they arrived at the next town…or maybe not. He glanced at her again, slouching with her eyes closed and black hair whipping wildly around her.
He swallowed as his stomach twisted and bubbled. Why was he so freaked out about her being around?
Jayden blinked and shook his head in an attempt to clear his mind.

He had to keep his shit together. He stole a quick look at the gas gauge. Full tank. Good. He’d drive through the night until they reached civilization. At least he didn’t have to worry about getting tired anymore. He settled back in the seat. This whole kinda-dead thing had its advantages.

A long-time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa began her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and feature articles to delve into the whimsical world of fiction.

Since then, Theresa has been married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and has been repeatedly guilt-tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having traveled to over a dozen countries—not to mention an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. Wherever life brings her, Theresa will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

*Prequel novella to Lure (The Allure Chronicles #1)*

Never agree to a road trip to New Orleans with your roommate. At least not when your roommate is dragging you along while she reconnects with an ex-boyfriend. Possible consequences of failing to take my advice:

1) Unknowingly going out with a vampire stripper
2) Getting kidnapped by said vampire’s nest mates
3) Falling head over heels for your winged hero

Believe it or not number 3 is the worst one, especially when no one believes you that he exists.

There’s danger in the beauty…

Two years, six months, and twenty-five days. That’s how long it had been since I’d seen my winged hero— not that I’d been counting. I’d suffered through years of counseling just to convince my friends and family that I wasn’t crazy and knew he didn’t exist.

But he did. And I was done waiting.

Days after college graduation I headed back down to New Orleans to retrace my steps and find Owen again only to find my life was about to get even crazier… thanks to the most beautiful and dangerous of all paranormal creatures, the Allures.
