#Review – Transient Echoes (The Variant Saga #2) by J.N. Chaney

Transient Echoes (The Variant Saga, #2)

It has been three years since the day of the Second Jolt. Thanks to the efforts of a select few, the world is finally moving on. As the Variant air begins to thin, humanity finds itself on the cusp of a new age of exploration…but at what cost?

After closing the rift—the source of all Variant—the hybrid child known as Terry has been transported to a distant world, far away from the only home he’s ever known. Completely isolated, and haunted by voices from his past, he wanders through the ruins of an ancient civilization long forgotten.

Back on Earth, a young woman named Mei works tirelessly to uncover the secrets of the rift. Against orders, she searches for the truth, making an unprecedented gamble. Will her obsession bring the answers she so desperately seeks…or will it cause even more destruction?

Goodreads

Just wow! I need more! This story picks up a few years after The Amber Project. We find out that Terry has been transported to another planet. Mei is working at the ruins but also has her own agenda on trying to find out what happened to Terry. The point of views go back and forth between the unknown planet and Earth. The world building is incredible. Earth is still nothing like we know of it today and the way the author describes the new Earth and the unknown planet that Terry is on is hard to resist. We get to experience Terry’s trials as he decides if he is going to continue to survive or not. And on the other hand we see Mei and John go through their own trials deciding if they need to move forward or not, on the low, to try and find out what happened to Terry. Both sides meet great new characters and many new journeys start. I have to warn you that this story is not like The Amber Project. Our characters have grown and are in completely different areas of their lives. I love how Transient Echoes compliments the Amber Project. It’s different and exciting! Kudos to JN Chaney for another great story!

#Review – #NewRelease – Paper Tigers (Fear University, Book 4) by Meg Collett

Paper Tigers (Fear University, Book 4)

Fear University has created a new monster …

The infamous fear switch research started with me, Patient Zero. But I am a failure. My mind adapted and now I move through the shadows like the creatures I was created to hunt. I spent my entire life in a cage with scalpels in my brain, but I am finally free—thanks to the Commander.

I am Zero, and I will make the bad men at Fear University pay.

I, Ollie Volkova, have returned to Fear University to rebuild and restore the school to its former standard of protecting the world against monsters, both human and aswang. But something new is killing Original families all over Kodiak Island and nearly assassinated the president of my university. The hunters call it a ghost, but I know she’s something more. Something worse than monsters and men. Something like me.

Fear University is my home, and I will kill to protect it.

Goodreads

It’s truly an intense story and this series has made it to one of my all time favorites. It’s an action packed thriller with some craziness on the side. More please! This series goes along with some Filipino folklore that I never knew existed. This author has brought Aswangs to life in this series along with some new monsters that we love to hate. Ollie is our lead female, she is a strong warrior halfling (half human and half aswang) that has come back with a vengeance. She has come back to bring Fear University to its former glory but is then put on hold due to some gruesome deaths. There is a “ghost” that lives in the shadows, going on killing sprees and has Fear University in it’s sights. Turns out that this ghost is actually the first “successful” experiment with the fear switch. But Zero adapted and now is on Fear University’s radar. There is so much more going on behind this part of the story. Sunny is working on an antidote for the aswang saliva, Hatter is still manic, and Luke is still in love with Ollie. People are scared. Some are running and some are fighting. Saviors or fighters? The group has been put in some crazy situations, desperate times call for desperate measures. They are all holding on to themselves while discovering who they really are. And lets not forget their families….some make a reappearance in this story. Some heartfelt and some heart wrenching. I can’t wait for more! Meg Collett did it again!

#REVIEW – Lone Wolf: (Olento Research #2) by Sarah Noffke

Lone Wolf: A Paranormal Science Fiction Thriller (Olento Research Book 2)

When one man can’t reconcile with the wolf inside of him, he knows all he can do is run. Take thewolf with him and run away from those he doesn’t want to hurt. But will that be his greatest mistake?

The pack is coming together, but one wolf would rather be alone with his demons than united as a team. In the second installment in the Olento Research series, Connor runs from the Lucidite Institute and his pack, fearful of what the wolf will make him do. All of the men describe feeling the impulses, thedesires that are unquenchable, coursing through them. But Connor knows he has a lesser chance of resisting those impulses due to his background. And after what he almost did to Adelaide, he can’t risks it happening again.

However, Mika hasn’t given up and he’s more driven to retrieve the werewolves he knows belong to him. He plants a mole in the Institute and thengoes to work creating a werewolf meant to catch other werewolves. One that is stronger, faster and bigger than those in the original pack.

Meanwhile Zephyr is quickly following leads and tracking down members of the pack, but will he be one step behind Olento Research? Can he rescue his team and stop Olento Research before they capture their would-be assassins?

Lone Wolf is darker and more grueling than its predecessor. However, it’s also a story about characters who are so beautiful with all their many flaws. It’s a story about how the very best intentions can still lead to the worst scenarios. When one intends not to hurt another, they may find that’s exactly what they’ve done.

Goodreads

A must read! This series gets better and better with every word read, every page written, and every emotion that the author provokes. “Loners take the risks that leaders can never afford.” *sigh* So true! I am a sucker for shifters but most stories are similar in nature. NOT THIS ONE! It is very unique and completely sucks you in to this incredible world of Dream Travelers and Werewolves. And lets not stop here…the Dream Travelers have special abilities (kinda like superpowers!). There is plenty of snark and sarcasm (and I require a lot!) all mixed in with real life emotions of these werewolves that will….that just….that give you ALL THE FEELS! Action, adventure, feels….what more could you ask for? These werewolves were abducted and experimented on. The werewolves escaped in the firsts book and are now trying to come to terms with what they are and what happened to them in this book. The pack is split up. Many of them still don’t know what happened to them or the fact that these abilities they acquired have made them a hybrid of human, dream traveler, and werewolf. It’s a combination that let’s you, as the reader, know that anything is possible and anything can happen. This series and the author are truly amazing. This is one heck of an adventure that you don’t want to miss as they try and get the pack back together while being picked off by another experiment. It’s wild! Check this out, you won’t be sorry.

#Review – House of Wolves: (A Paranormal Urban Fantasy) (The Vampire Project Book 1) by Jonathan Yanez

35111519

History was wrong: werewolves and vampires were made, not born. Buckle up, Buttercup, this is going to get bloody.

Despite her youth, Captain Charlotte Sloan has risen rapidly through the ranks of the queen’s army due to one simple truth; she doesn’t take lip from anyone.

But she’s about to come up against something she can’t beat alone. Gruesome murders have been reported in a far off town. A beast of unknown origin is on the loose and the body count is rising.

If she hopes to survive, Sloan will have to play nice with an assassin well versed in drinking and the best two magicians money can’t buy. When the dust settles, one will die, one will find love, and another will be changed forever.

Goodreads

An intriguing paranormal, steampunk, supernatural story! I had to read this as soon as I read the first line of the synopsis.

House of Wolves is a quick and fun read with plenty of surprising twists that pop out of nowhere. The queen of New Hope dispatches Sloan (the captain of her personal guard) Aereth (former inspector and assassin) and Marcus and Jack (father and son sorcerers) to help the outlying city of Burrow Den. Burrow Den has had multiple attacks by an unknown animal/monster. The queen is trying to build good relationships with the outlying cities and has agreed to help. She sends the four out on this quest . Little did they know, there is so much more going on. They are almost assassinated, they crash their transportation, and find all kinds of quirks and craziness along the way and when they arrive at Burrow Den. Now they need to find the culprit. Animal or human? Who and what is going on?

The world building was interesting to follow. The way it is described leaves a little to the imagination but this is really great because in my mind I had several different ways it could all be set up. When I read the synopsis I thought I would be following Sloan, and only Sloan. It is a little misleading. We follow the entire group and the story is told from all of their points of view. I feel like this book is a cross between Steampunk and Supernatural. Not at all like the technology that we have but they have magic powered tech too. This was a fun book to read. Truly unique. And the investigating that the group do will keep you right in the middle of the story. This is the first book that I have read by Jonathan Yanez and won’t be the last. I am looking forward to the next!

#Review – The Amber Project (The Variant Saga #1) by JN Chaney

The Amber Project (Volume 1)

In 2157, a mysterious gas known as Variant spreads across the globe, killing or mutating most organic life. The surviving humans take refuge in an underground city, determined to return home. But after generations of failures and botched attempts, hope is beginning to dwindle. That is, until a young scientist makes a unique discovery—and everything changes. Suddenly, there’s reason to hope again, and it rests within a group of genetically engineered children that are both human and Variant.

Terry is one of these children, modified and trained to endure the harsh conditions of a planet he cannot begin to understand. After years of preparation, Terry thinks he knows what to expect. But the reality is far stranger than anything he can imagine—and what he will become is far more dangerous.

Goodreads

Holy dystopia! The Amber Project is a great dystopian journey. This is a genre I love to read and sometimes get a little iffy on how much it will differ from others in the same genre. The author sets the setting so that you are right there. The characters all feel incredibly real. You will connect with them very quickly. Humans are trying to keep their race going while living underground. The earth has been destroyed by the gas, Variant. During the entire story you are given snippets of audio recording from past and present regarding Variant and the various experiments the scientists and the military have been working on. During all of this you live and feel what the genetically altered kids are going through. You see why and how they are taken from their homes and sent to a place where they are trained like soldiers. And finally you experience the changes that they face internally and externally. They are forced to go to the surface for a mission. Many things are unknown and very dangerous. The journey they take and the uprisings going on below the surface are sure to keep you stuck on the story. The ending is very well written. It’s enough to wrap up this story but more than enough to keep you waiting on pins and needles for the next. This is my first story by JN Chaney and absolutely, under no circumstances, be the last. Well done!

#WOTR – #REVIEW – Love and the Corps (The Heart Nebula Series #2) by Ava Cuvay

Love and the Corps (The Heart Nebula Series #2)

Bound by duty, two soldiers yield to their hearts’ command.

Captain Jo Behsue has never questioned her career with Central Command’s leading military force—until now. Recent mission failures and the constant battle for acceptance from her fellow Corpsmen kindle her frustration, while the attention of a golden-eyed Klorakian mercenary ignites her body. Wrapped in his arms, she discovers even a scarred, hollow shell of a captain can love.

An officer in the Klorakian militia, Lux fights to return the rightful monarch to their homeworld’s throne—a planet which scorns his genetic shortcomings. He is loyal to his cause and king, but faces a bleak future once their mission is complete. His seduction of the combative yet beautiful Captain Behsue provides a glimpse of hope, and he fights for a life with Jo, who finds only beauty in his defects.

This book is intended for a mature audience. It contains graphic language, vivid relations, and the word “moist.”

Goodreads

Willing and wanting! Packed full of action and sexual angst. Captain Jo is with the Corps and Klorakian mercenaries are their allies. Jo has always been the ugly one. Her life is with the Corps, life and body. She has trained hard and believes she is invincible. She goes on a mission and is saved by the Klorakians. A certain Klorakian, Lux, is the one that saves her. Lux is an outcast himself. Full of genetic defects by Klorakian standards. Both are unwanted until they run into each other. Naturally fireworks explode. They both find refuge in each other but Jo continues to fight it as she is constantly trying to figure what is right and wrong. Lots of secrets are uncovered between the two of them. This is a sexually charged push and pull between them but they are always in the middle of a battle. Whether it be with the PITAS or with their emotions. They overcome many obstacles and then begin to wonder if they are worth each others time. This is such a crazy ride. Love the characters and the world building (or space building). It’s outstanding! You feel like you are right in the middle with the sights and sounds of all the soldiers. This author has an incredible knack of pulling you right in the story and making it where you absolutely don’t want to put the book down. Well done, Ava! Another out of this world story!

More Ren! And on vacation?! OMG Sarah has truly outdone herself on this one! If you know Ren, then you know how snarky and what a debbie downer he can be. But he always speaks what is on his mind and has no issue telling you what he really thinks. He has been my favorite character since the Lucidites series and I get incredibly giddy when Sarah give us more. He goes on vacation with the fam but has to do it Middling style, in a car and everything. If anything can happen, it does. His snark, plus Dahlia, and the “life ruiner” absolutely makes this a laugh out loud story. Everyone has a demon to battle but some don’t know how to go into battle to beat their demon. I don’t think Ren knows how to deal with his own personal issues and feelings. While on this Middling adventure he is taught some life lessons on the way and will continue the story with a smile on your face and a belly laugh. As things progress we learn about a huge demon that he needs to put to rest. It stopped my heart and I didn’t know if I should shake Sarah Noffke for making me laugh then cry in one sitting or if I should just suck it up and enjoy the rest of the story. I chose the latter because, well, I need more Ren, LOL! Thank you, Sarah, for another adventure with Ren. He truly is my favorite character ever and I look forward to him everyday. An absolute must read!

What a wild ride! Soooooooo good! This is an intense story that keeps going and going. There is so much going on with several stories that ultimately intertwine that makes this an absolute must read. Raz is an alien and is in hiding with Paris and their son. Paris becomes very sick and Raz believes it is time to run again. Raz and Sandra are very attracted to each other and had a one night stand. Both are crushed that Raz has to leave but he needs to in order to keep his secret safe. One thing leads to another and BOOM! Sandra is right in the mix of things and is more a part of this secret than she knows. Finally things are starting to make sense. But as more answers are obtained there come more questions. The bond between all the characters is intense. The author does not skimp on any details and you will become immersed in this world. It is jam packed with action and takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions.

This is Fiona Riplee’s first book and as a debut author…SHE NAILED IT! I am looking forward to continue this journey with Raz, Sandra, and the entire crew.

Oh my stars and planets! A stripper and an intergalactic thief! What more could you ask for?! This book was exciting from beginning to end. It grabs your attention and holds you right to the very end and leaves you wanting….no, needing more. Right from jump the author puts you in a seedy type of strip club with all types of characters. Granger is the intergalactic thief and he has hired Dex, a shady pilot, to get him off of the rock they are on. He runs into Kaedi, our dominant exotic dancer, and he cannot get her out of his mind. Kaedi decides at the last minute she is going to hitch a ride with the guys but they run into all sorts of trouble with Central Command. They lose their pilot and lots of cargo. Only to have to deal with ships tailing them and some not so savory back stabbers. Kaedi and Granger grow instantly close. They cannot keep to themselves and it’s not about number one anymore….its about them together. Absolutely action packed with crazy ship chases, crashes, and very hot scenes between these two! Just wow! This is my first book by Ava Cuvay and will absolutely not be the last. This is one of my new favorites!!!

synopsis

Don’t stand out. Blend in. Remain invisible. Those are the rules I lived by—the rules I thought would keep me alive.

I was wrong.

Wynter Reeves is a law-abiding citizen of the State, a willing conformist whose daily life is haunted by terrorism and oppression. With the constant threat of death hanging over her like a shadow, she forces herself to live by a strict set of rules, all in the hope of ensuring she is never noticed. However, on her twenty-first birthday, as she prepares to take the placement exam that will determine her future within society, she begins to show symptoms of a rare and debilitating illness—ultimately attracting the attention of the State. Taken into the custody of the feared research facility known as the DSD, her worst nightmare becomes reality.

Ripped away from the life she knew, Wynter is forced to become the test subject of the mysterious Dr. Richter. Through him, she learns the true and terrifying nature of her condition: a disease called Ultraxenopia.

kellys review

A fascinating dystopian read! Regardless if you are a dystopian genre buff or not, you won’t be disappointeed. I don’t normally like to compare books in my reviews but I felt like this was a cross between Hunger Games and Divergent (I love them all). The world is set up so you feel like you are right there. The background for the characters is beautifully flawed. This author gives you just enough to be sure you continue to find out more about the others. Perfect!

Wynter is about to take her placement test when something happens to her. She is having hallucinations and is taken to the DSD and is told that she has a disease, Ultraxenopia. She is told that she will be safe but ends up being tortured by Dr. Richter for “the greater good”. She keeps seeing this man in her visions. She escapes and finds this man who is part of the rebellion group PHOENIX. As if her head wasn’t spinning while with the DSD, her whole world is turned upside down. Fear, confusion, disbelief, questioning of morals, and trying to figure out what is right and what is wrong….This story will have you all over the board and trying to figure out exactly what is going on and what the next step is. Truly captivating!

“When I enter the corridor, I notice Jenner leaning up against the wall next to the door. He’s whistling a soft tune and his eyes are closed. He looks serene, beautiful even. At peace. I envy him, wishing more than anything that I could know what that feels like.”

“Sympathy— or I guess, in this instance, empathy— can alter a person’s mindset toward just about anything, regardless of the circumstances. Or, in our case, because of the circumstances.”

“From the day I was born, I’ve been told to suppress my emotions —that by doing so I would successfully integrate into a society that it’s taken me my whole life to realize is poisonous. Humans are meant to feel. We’re meant to love. We aren’t meant to shut any of that out, and what I never grasped before is that you can’t. One way or another, they’ll find their way to the surface. One way or another, they’ll find a way to break through. Holding back all of those feelings for twenty-one years leaves me unprepared for the onslaught that attacks me now. Each emotion tears through me, burning into my soul until there’s nothing left but a pile of ashes. From those ashes, what rises up is the new me.”

This is a new author for me and I’m hooked. There is a cliffhanger and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment. A must read!

In 2013, one of her short stories was shortlisted for publication and in the following year, she submitted her first-full length novel to an online writing competition where it was rated second overall out of over two-hundred manuscripts. In 2015, she decided to self-publish her dystopian novel, Ultraxenopia, which was acquired by a publisher five months later. At it’s re-release, it became an international bestseller.
