It was as familiar as breathing. She would have known it anywhere. It haunted her dreams and sneaked into her thoughts when she least expected it. For a brief moment she thought she might be hearing things. Had she conjured up his voice because she\u2019d been thinking of him earlier? No, that was silly. There was no way he could actually be behind her. Dani turned slowly and blinked several times. She could feel the color draining from her cheeks. This couldn\u2019t be happening to her. \u201cRen?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cDr. Sousa, I forgot to give you Mr. Price\u2019s chart.\u201d A nurse with dark auburn hair and soft brown eyes bustled in and handed him a file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ren stared at Dani and didn\u2019t say a word for several seconds. He studied her in awkward silence. He was almost exactly as she remembered him. His hair was a bit shorter, and his blue eyes stole her breath. It was Ren. Having him near always had that effect on her. He turned toward the nurse, took the file out of her hand, and dismissed her with a nod. \u201cThank you, Lana.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Lana\u2026that was the woman who\u2019d called her office. Dani filed her name away for future reference. She was pretty, petite, and had a no-nonsense attitude. Something Dani appreciated. The nurse nodded and left the room. Leaving Ren alone with her. He set the file down and walked over to her side. The silence in the room was palpable. She had no idea what to say to him and still wasn\u2019t completely convinced he was real. Hallucinations had never plagued her before, but there was always a first time for everything\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cDani, I didn\u2019t realize\u2026I should have asked Lana for a name.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Real. Definitely real.<\/em> She gulped down a lump in her throat. Hell how was she supposed to deal with Ren, and Matt\u2019s situation at the same time? This was an overwhelming emotional circumstance, and she wasn\u2019t entirely sure she was up to dealing with it. She sent up a silent prayer for strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">She shook her head. \u201cThere was no way for you to know.\u201d This was all too much. Matt was hurt and Ren was his doctor. How could life have set her on this path? Her two best friends\u2014one\u2019s life depended on the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Was this the fate\u2019s way of making her face her past?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">She cleared her throat and turned away from him. It hurt to look at him. He looked as amazing as she remembered. A golden-brown haired god with ocean blue eyes, pain stabbed in tiny pinpricks against her already aching heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhat do you need from me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ren didn\u2019t answer her. Had he remained in the room with her? She didn\u2019t want to turn around and look, but he was forcing her to face him. Why did she have to deal with this? Normally she could handle anything\u2026 This was too much in one breath of time for her. The tears she\u2019d been holding back were about to come crashing forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Her breath hitched as she turned to look at him. All the love she had been carrying around for him\u2014it was still there. He was a walking reminder of what she didn\u2019t have. His gaze held such concern for her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cDani, perhaps we should go to my office to discuss this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hearing her name spoken in his voice was almost her undoing. They\u2019d stepped into an easy pattern of familiarity, but they knew next to nothing about each other anymore. They had a past. That was it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cDoes it matter where we talk about Matt?\u201d She looked down at her friend. \u201cThe nurse said he was sedated. I doubt he will hear any of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What she didn\u2019t say was she needed the buffer. She didn\u2019t know what she would say or do if she was completely alone with him. Sure Matt wasn\u2019t about to jump into the conversation, but he was better than talking about the elephant in the room. Her feelings for Ren, his lack of them for her, and the fact she\u2019d disappeared from his life so many years ago. She hadn\u2019t even said goodbye. It would have been too difficult to face him and explain why she couldn\u2019t be in his life anymore. Jessica needed him to devote all his attention to her. Dani would have been in the way. Leaving was the only decision she could have made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI think you will be more comfortable there discussing his condition,\u201d he replied softly. \u201cI have a lot to go over with you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ren had always been kind. This wasn\u2019t about her. Matt\u2019s condition had to be more important. It was time for her to suck it up and deal with her emotional overload. Ren wasn\u2019t going to bite her head off. It wasn\u2019t who he was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cFine, lead the way, Dr. Sousa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dani had to put up barriers and ignore her rampant emotions. He couldn\u2019t be Ren anymore. He was Matt\u2019s doctor and nothing more. They have friend zoned the other and when someone tells a lie, Dani runs. She runs far away. Ren is devastated and tries to move on with is life.<\/p>\n<p>10 years later, Dani is in the hospital with her best friend when in walks DOCTOR REN \u2026WOOOO BABY!! The two pick up right where they left off. Him perusing her because he will not let his heart go. Her freaking out because she has loved Ren her entire life but the lie is still in the way.<\/p>\n<p>So while you have Ren and Dani dealing and figuring stuff out is when the mystery starts. Dani is an attorney in town. Her client asks her to investigate another mystery local man. Dani is blindsided with what she learns and has to rethink everything she has known to be true.<\/p>\n<p>As much as I love a good 2nd chance romance, the mystery plot kept me engaged. I loved where Dawn took me as a reader.
