    \u201cWhere have you been in that thing?\u201d Machlan shouts.<\/p>\n

    The roar of his muscle car\u2019s engine winds down and he clicks the transmission into park. The purplish-black paint shines in the early afternoon sun.<\/p>\n

    Having just backed out of a parking spot onto Main Street, I check my rearview mirror. No one is coming. \u201cBluebird Hill,\u201d I tell him. \u201cAfter all that rain last night, I figured I\u2019d test the new tires Walker put on my truck last week.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou\u2019re a fuckin\u2019 kid.\u201d He laughs.<\/p>\n

    \u201cSays the man driving that,\u201d I tease, pointing at his ride.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u2019m not sure what your point is. This car is the baddest thing in town.\u201d He punches the gas, the motor roaring like a banshee.<\/p>\n

    Glancing around at Doc Burns\u2019 office with two cars in the parking lot and the Linton County History Museum across the street that only opens for the Water Festival once a year, I grin. \u201cThat\u2019s not saying much.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cGo to Hell.\u201d His hand slips through his dark hair and over his chin. The amusement in his features evaporates as I watch \u2026 and cringe.<\/p>\n

    I know this look. I know all of his looks, actually, a by-product of being his best friend as long as I can remember. Many of them concern me and a lot of them worry me. But this one? It\u2019s a flashing red sign with Vegas-inspired lights.<\/p>\n

    The thing is, I can\u2019t just ignore it. When this look comes, so does the topic of my sister and, even though I love the both of them, I wouldn\u2019t mind seeing them in a padded room until they fix whatever it is between them that is so broken.<\/p>\n

    With a sigh, I jam my truck into park too. \u201cYes,\u201d I say, answering the question he\u2019s yet to ask. \u201cHadley called and isn\u2019t coming home this weekend. She said maybe next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

    His jaw works back and forth as he stares down the street. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

    That single word is spit with a lifetime of emotion. Machlan has loved my sister since the day she moved to Linton with our father and me when our mother died. She was fourteen and innocent and he was fifteen and infatuated. Through the years, they were off and on and together and not\u2014at least officially. Everyone knew Machlan and Hadley were one and the same.<\/p>\n

    I\u2019m not sure why she moved away from here. Being both her<\/em> brother and his<\/em> best friend precluded me from certain information, which is for the best. They both drive me nuts without<\/em> having the details.<\/p>\n

    \u201cNot sure,\u201d I reply. \u201cShe left a voicemail last night saying she wouldn\u2019t be home today. She didn\u2019t pick up when I called her back.\u201d<\/p>\n

    He flips his gaze to me. \u201cYou didn\u2019t talk to her after that?\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cShe\u2019s a big girl, Mach,\u201d I mock. \u201cI\u2019m sure she had shit to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cYeah.\u201d His fingers regrip the steering wheel as his jaw goes back to work again.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u2019m gonna go wash this before I head back to the gym\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cShe\u2019s all right, though. Right?\u201d he interrupts. His face is stone-cold sober. \u201cI mean \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cShe\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

    He waits. Blinks. Re-grips the wheel again. \u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Popping my truck into drive, I blow out a breath. \u201cYeah, that\u2019s it. You want to know more? Call her. What a fucking amazing concept.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cYeah. I\u2019ll get right on that,\u201d he snips back.<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou should. Then you could quit this whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cGot nothin\u2019 to quit, man. Just being a decent guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

    A decent guy<\/em>. It\u2019s my turn to turn my knuckles white on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

    Machlan isn\u2019t a decent guy. He\u2019s a fucking great one \u2026 much better than the guy Hadley is seeing now. A guy I haven\u2019t mentioned to Mach since I got home a couple of weeks ago from visiting her. I\u2019m not mentioning him, either. I\u2019ll save the boyfriend an ER bill and myself the bail money.<\/p>\n

    I can\u2019t blame him. It has to be hard to see Hadley with another guy when, in Machlan\u2019s mind, she\u2019s his girl.<\/p>\n

    My stomach twists like it always does when my mind goes down this road. At least my girl didn\u2019t bring other guys back with her. Hell, she didn\u2019t even come back at all.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHere comes Kip,\u201d Machlan says, bringing me out of my reverie. Nodding toward the road in front of him, he laughs. \u201cI\u2019m not moving.\u201d<\/p>\n

    I twist in my seat to see the sheriff coming toward us. He blares the siren twice as if to get us to move. We don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

    Machlan pokes his head out of the window. \u201cNeed somethin\u2019?\u201d he shouts.<\/p>\n

    Laughing, I watch Kip\u2019s car slide carefully between Machlan\u2019s and the curb on the other side.<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou can\u2019t park in the street!\u201d Kip yells.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWhat are ya gonna do about it?\u201d I holler.<\/p>\n

    \u201cTake ya both in.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cDon\u2019t you have somewhere to be?\u201d Machlan asks. \u201cSomeone to protect and serve? Or service,<\/em> if I know you?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Kip shakes his head as Machlan flips him the bird. The sirens come on again before Kip hits the gas and speeds off down the street and vanishes over the hill.<\/p>\n

    When I look back at Machlan, his attention is on his phone.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWhat?\u201d I ask, curious about the smile on his face.<\/p>\n

    He looks at me and laughs. Sticking the phone in the cup holder, he shrugs. \u201cNothing. But can you do me a favor?\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cI need help moving a couple of things at Crave. Come help me. Just for a few.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cWhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n

    \u201cA beer?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Throwing the truck in neutral, I rev the engine. It barely sounds before his is screaming over top of mine and we jet off in opposite directions. I get to a stop sign at the end of the street and do a quick one-eighty to head to Crave.<\/p>\n
