\u201cYeah.\u201d I squeezed my eyes shut tight, trying to focus, to break out of the hold he had on me. Both internally and externally. \u201cI need an intermission.\u201d<\/span>

He pulled back but didn\u2019t let go of me. \u201cDo I have to let go of you entirely? I really don\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cUm\u2026it would probably be easier for me to think if you did.\u201d<\/span>
\n
\u201cYou scare me a little when you think.\u201d He let out a big sigh, then inhaled deeply. \u201cEspecially because I have this awful feeling that you\u2019re about to say that it\u2019s nothing personal, but this isn\u2019t going to work out.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cWow,\u201d I said, unhappy he was right. \u201cYou\u2019re good.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cNo. Good is what I think we could be. Together.\u201d He paused, studying my face, his gaze moving from the eyes I\u2019d just opened to the lips his had just released. \u201cYou\u2019re serious. Fuck, of course, you\u2019re serious.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cSorry.\u201d I was trying to be smart and not get hurt, and the universe dropped him into my path. A test of strength I wasn\u2019t sure I was up to.<\/span>
\n
\u201cDon\u2019t be sorry. Be\u2026\u201d He briefly dropped his head forward and then looked up again. \u201cBefore you tell me to go away, can I have a minute to make my case?\u201d<\/span>
\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not going to change anything.\u201d Ugh. I\u2019d never heard anything said with as much regret.<\/span>
\n
\n\u201cCome on\u2026 I deserve one measly minute, don\u2019t I?\u201d He looked so sincere\u2026and kind of needy. A big, beautiful man needed me. Not that I\u2019d never seen\u00a0need\u00a0on a man\u2019s face before, but everything about Declan was different. Not only did he want to sleep with me, he wanted to talk to me, too. Part of me actually thought he might still want to talk to me even if he were one hundred percent sure he\u2019d never get to sleep with me again. That<\/span> was definitely something I never thought I\u2019d see.<\/span>

\u201cOnly if you step back at least a foot.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cA foot?\u201d Even in the dark, his eyes shone with life and a little humor. \u201cIs that at all negotiable?\u201d<\/span>

I grumbled under my breath. \u201cFine. Stay\u2026six inches away.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u201cIf you really don\u2019t want any part of me to touch you, there\u00a0needs\u00a0to be more than six inches between us,\u201d he said, adjusting the erection stretching the front of his jeans.<\/p>\n

I raised an eyebrow and put my hands on his chest. \u201cWell, aren\u2019t you cocky.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYep. And, for the record? I\u2019<\/p>\n

m a good inch, inch-and-a-half cockier than six inches.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cHuh. Are you sure about that?\u201d I teased. He didn\u2019t need to know I thought he was selling himself short at seven and a half inches.<\/span>

\u201cDamn, woman.\u201d Running a hand through his hair, he chuckled. \u201cAre you this hard on everyone\u2019s ego?\u201d<\/span>

\u201cJust yours.\u201d I pressed my lips together to stop myself from laughing. \u201cI guess that means you\u2019re lucky.\u201d<\/span>

Lauren wants to make people think, cry, and giggle, not necessarily all at the same time (although it’s great when it happens).
