#Review – Dark Dreams and Dead Things (Dead Things #2) by Martina McAtee

Dark Dreams and Dead Things (Dead Things, #2)

17-year-old November Lonergan spent her whole life feeling like an outsider. She was right. She’s a reaper like her mother; like her two cousins, Kai and Tristin. The supernatural world believes they are part of a prophecy to save them from an evil known as the Grove. Ember just wants to survive high school and fix the fallout from bringing back her friend.

Old enemies are lurking; waiting for their opportunity to strike but the pack has a new problem. A group of legendary hunters has resurfaced, threatening the reapers and anybody who stands with them. They are making good on their threats too; attacking those closest to the pack.

Their only hope of defeating the Legionaries involves trusting a stranger to perform a dangerous spell to advance Ember and her cousin’s powers. But Ember has a secret; a secret she can’t tell the pack. One that leaves the pack vulnerable.

An attack on pack allies, leaves one member of the group injured and another missing, along with a mysterious girl named Evangeline who may play a bigger part in this than any of them realize. As the Legionaries are closing in, the pack must trust their enemies, enter hostile territories, and play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a psychopath. Their entire plan lynches on a dangerous bargain, but rescuing one member of the pack could mean losing another in their place…possibly forever.

It’s amazing when an author can continue a story and make it just as great, if not better, than the first. Martina, my hat’s off to you! After reading the first I just had to know what happened. I didn’t realize how addicting this story was until I finished the first… and the second…then had nowhere to go (bring on book 3!). This story is still witty and funny but, as the title indicates, it is dark. I felt like it’s about finding a way to fight the monsters you can’t see. Ember and the crew have experienced it all. Knife fights, blood rituals, and deaths. Or at least they thought they did. Then you throw a prophecy in the midst of the craziness and all the freaks come out! While Ember and her cousins are trying to figure out what exactly they are themselves and how to harness their power, they now have to prepare for a war that they didn’t realize they were part of. It seems all they can get is a bunch of half-truths, but in true paranormal fashion the fight is on! And of course we have some new characters! It’s very Mace-centric! In the first book Mace is our resident bad guy, but kinda good, maybe, lol! But he is also very mysterious and we never really get a good look at what happened to him or what his story was. Well he is the bad guy I just had to know more about. Thank the gods Martina gives us his backstory! It explains soooo much about him. And Silas, well he is very special, the kind you love to hate to love. He is a new constant in the story that will keep you trying to figure out his angle. As with the first story this one is very intense but it is darker. It is nail biting, keep you on the edge of your seat, suspenseful reading. I can’t say much about what happens because there are so many twists and turns and I don’t want to give anything away. Absolute intense sequel and soooooo good! Definite must read! I can’t wait for the next!

Azure has been accepted as queen and many people believe in her. As if the rift between the humans and witches isn’t getting better, the humans have poisoned the wells and streams of Virgo. Many are sick now and Azure has to get into action. Instead of handling the issues in the traditions of past queens she takes it upon herself to go on a quest to help her people. She has to find a cure and continues to be proactive in trying to help her people. She and her quirky group embark out on yet another journey. She must travel to the Mountain of Truth to get her questions answered by the only witch that has them. The trip includes many wacky issues and some new alliances. The only problem is they have to make it to the top of the mountain but this particular mountain is filled with magic and illusions. It’s a true testament to their friendships. They are also on the search for the Book of Branches. This portion of the trip really opens Azure’s eyes to the ways of many of the other people of Oriceran. She is embracing the fact that she is different and unique. Her heart is really there for not only her people but all of Oriceran. The series will keep you on your toes with all the crazy banter between this quirky group. It’s the perfect mix of emotion, fun, and fantasy. Loved it!

Monsterland….Disneyland….what’s the difference? Monsterland is what happens when Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies are for real, for real. The monsters are real and living in hiding or in containments camps. It is ruining the economy but the hero comes in just in time to save the day. He has this amazing idea to have these creatures live in Monsterland for “observation” turned theme park. Some people have their reservations but others are crazy psyched to go to Monsterland. Wyatt gets an amazing chance to go to opening night of Monsterland and go behind the scenes as well. He takes his friends and his little brother to opening night. Boy! They are in for the time of their lives! Buckle up and get ready for a crazy, unhinged, wild ride! Things aren’t always what they seem and you will be in the middle of chaos in no time. This is the first book I have read by Michael Phillip Cash and it won’t be the last. One of my new favorite authors!

An epic ending to an incredible series! I dove into this story expecting loose ends to be tied and the story coming to a close. What I didn’t expect was the intensity of the story. It was crazy awesome! The truths finally come out! It has taken me a while to get my words together for this review because I can’t stress the epic-ness (lol! told you I was struggling) of this series. The journey that Shay takes will really make you relate to her. She has been controlled and manipulated for as long as she can remember and has gotten sick and tired of it. As the series went along she has been realizing she is strong but with Bold Strokes the strength really comes out. She turns into the strong and independent woman that we all want to be. Then we have all our favorite guys in the mix, Aiden and Eli, Carl and McNab, Gabriel and Cullen. These guys all add the necessary roughness that we come to expect from the Bella-verse. The push and pull of these characters in this world is written perfectly. I have gotten so attached to the characters, well, because we all know someone like them, and I wasn’t sure exactly how this was going to end. I mean, the ultimate questions arise….Does she stop the Specter? Who else is gonna die? Who gets the girl? OMG! YOU MUST READ THIS BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SPOILERS HERE! The whole journey has been breathtaking, skin crawling, funny, sad, with failures and so many strengths. But most important are all the twists and turns that absolutely keep you on the edge of your seat constantly trying to figure the angle out. It’s about figuring out that you ARE going somewhere even if you don’t know exactly where you are going. Oh the madness! An absolute must read! Kudos to the author, Bella! Girl, you rocked this!

#Review – Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things (Dead Things #1) by Martina McAtee

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (Dead Things, #1)

17 year old Ember Denning has made an art of isolating herself. She prefers the dead. She spends her days skipping school in old cemeteries and her nights hiding from her alcoholic father at the funeral home where she works. When her own father dies, Ember learns her whole life is a lie. Standing in the cemetery that’s been her sanctuary, she’s threatened by the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen and rescued by two people who claim to be her family. They say she’s special, that she has a supernatural gift like them…they just don’t know exactly what it is.

They take her to a small Florida town, where Ember’s life takes a turn for the weird. She’s living with her reaper cousins, an orphaned werewolf pack, a faery and a human genius. Ember’s powers are growing stronger, morphing into something bigger than anything anybody anticipated. Ember has questions but nobody has answers. Nobody knows what she is. They only know her mysterious magical gift is trying to kill them and that beautiful dangerous boy from the cemetery may be the only thing standing between her and death.

As Ember’s talents are revealed so are the secrets her father hid and those in power who would seek to destroy her. What’s worse, saving Ember has put her cousins in danger and turned her friend’s lives upside down. Ember must learn to embrace her magic or risk losing the family she’s pieced together.

First, this cover! I mean, who wouldn’t check the book out with a cover like this?! Second, the premise of the book promises lots of supernatural and ghouls alike! I mean, duh! YES, PLEASE! I have not read a story like this before. It definitely takes the paranormal world to a new level. This story is hilarious, witty and a bit on the morbid side in a fantastical way. Ember is just a teenage girl who is trying to get through life. She has had a terrible childhood and when her alcoholic father dies her world really does turn upside down. Her life goes from complicated to unrecognizable. There is a huge amount of characters ranging from our softies to the baddies. Most have a supernatural ability. And when they are all put together the story explodes! Naturally we have many secrets that are going through the process to be revealed but most truths come with more questions. Ember is really just trying to figure herself out and when she finally finds where she is supposed to be she isn’t sure if she can live up to what everyone expects her to be. She is drawn to the dead, like a moth to a flame, and she has no idea why. What I love about this book is how the story comes to life. The author does an incredible job with bringing all of the characters into play and giving them all a voice. We get to experience the monsters, illusions, redemption, fear, doubt, jealousy….just all the feels! This is absolutely one of my new favorite books. In fact, when I finished the book I went right out and purchased the second because I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! And I was not let down in the slightest. Trust me, you need to read this!

#Review – SHIFT (Mackenzie Grey #1) by Karina Espinosa

SHIFT (Mackenzie Grey: Origins, #1)

It’s hard enough being an undergraduate student, an intern at Downtown Manhattan’s police station, and a bouncer at a local bar. Add her now ex-boyfriend who recently dumped her for the school’s resident bimbo—oh, and she’s a werewolf.
Mackenzie Grey meets her match when she is kidnapped by the Brooklyn Pack and tossed between Sebastian and Jonah—the Alpha and the Beta. Being a lone-wolf in the city is dangerous, and now that the Pack has found her, so can every supernatural being in the Tri-State area. And not even her sarcastic, smart mouth can get her out of this.
When a string of kidnappings involves Mackenzie in supernatural politics, she questions her new acquaintances and finds unlikely allies. Can she escape Pack law and keep her freedom—or will she be condemned to an unwanted path?

This is such a great book! A kickass heroine who is bending all the rules and showing she can play with the big boys! I actually won this book during a book release party. I have never heard of this author but I do LOVE a good shifter book. I was a little put off at the first sentence because it starts with how her ex-boyfriend left her for a bimbo. I didn’t want the book to be a bunch of high school type stuff but I was proven wrong and very fast. Mackenzie is this college student who is a werewolf. She is not sure how it happened and has no one to talk with about this change. She has an amazing friend, Amy, who reminds me of the saying “dynamite comes in small packages”. A trio of werewolves doesn’t make her quiver. Mackenzie has a strength and confidence about her that gets her a job as a bouncer at a nightclub. She runs into the local pack and this becomes trouble. She is still trying to wrap her head around the whole mess while attempting to get answers from them about her. She is having an extremely difficult time with the pack as she is unwilling to bend to their practices and rules. There are many tough decisions, things that could scar her for life, but she takes it in stride as she understands that sometimes you have to break the rules. She is still an extremely independent woman but has to lean on someone when things continue to go awry with her ex and the kidnappings that are now involving her. This is an extremely witty and cunning story that is full of badassery. I got absolutely sucked in and could not stop until the end and even then I needed more. I will be continuing this journey of Mackenzie’s. It’s absolutely captivating. Kudos to the author!

#Review – The Dark Forest: The Revelations of Oriceran (Soul Stone Mage #2) by Sarah Noffke

The Dark Forest: The Revelations of Oriceran (Soul Stone Mage, #2)

The Kingdom of Virgo has lived in peace for thousands of years…until now.

Azure’s world flips when she discovers her father is the emperor of Terran. Wait…was the emperor.

Now the two are prisoners in the Land of Terran.

Azure must escape and locate her mother’s soul stone. The virus that stole the queen’s magic is going after her very life, and the soul stone is her only hope.

Azure must save her mother. Create alliances with savage beasts. And win her people’s favor to keep the crown.

However, Princess Azure now has a taste for adventure. If being queen means she must sit on a throne, then to hell with that.

Welcome to The Revelations of Oriceran.

A magical world tied to Earth, and nothing like it.

What is going to happen next?! That is the question. Azure and her father, who is human and was the emperor of Terran) are imprisoned for treason. Azure has to find her mother’s soul stone or her mother is going to die. In the first book she made some new, quirky friends on her quest through the Dark Forest along with her best friend Monet. With the help of these guys she and her father are able to escape with her mother’s soul stone. Now the next part of her journey begins. Along her travels back through the Dark Forest she is foraging new alliances with other unlikely groups. She is faced with immense amounts of diversity and her true colors are shining through. She really is someone that wants to help all peoples and creatures of her planet but she wants to be proactive. Watching all of these characters develop has been amazing and quite inspirational. The characters definitely have their own personalities and each of their quirks have made this journey so much fun to follow. Monet, by far, has to be one of my favorite characters in this series so far. He can be such a baby but is super witty and really does have Azure’s best interests at heart. The banter with Monet will keep you laughing and rolling through this amazing adventure!

House of Enchanted: The Revelations of Oriceran (Soul Stone Mage Book 1)

The Kingdom of Virgo has lived in peace for thousands of years…until now.
The humans from Terran have always been real assholes to the witches of Virgo. Now a silent war is brewing, and the timing couldn’t be worse. Princess Azure will soon be crowned queen of the Kingdom of Virgo.

In the Dark Forest a powerful potion-maker has been murdered.

Charmsgood was the only wizard who could stop a deadly virus plaguing Virgo. He also knew about the devastation the people from Terran had done to the forest.

Azure must protect her people. Mend the Dark Forest. Create alliances with savage beasts. No biggie, right?

But on coronation day everything changes. Princess Azure isn’t who she thought she was and that’s a big freaking problem.

Welcome to The Revelations of Oriceran.

A magical world tied to Earth, and nothing like it.

Goodreads

Fantastical, outlandish and fun story full of magic! I absolutely love this story! This author can take any story and put you in the middle of the characters banter, arguments, and thought processes. Azure is a witch and is about to become queen. Something goes terribly wrong and on coronation day she finds she is not exactly what she always believed she is. This sets her on a journey to the land of Terran where the humans live. No supernaturals are allowed to cross into the borders of Terran but this is an expedition she must make. She has a “crazy” grandmother that helps her on her way and all the creatures she meets on the way are full of riddles and mystery. The Dark Forest is an incredible place with fantastic beings. Even during the serious moments there is always someone with a witty comeback that keeps the book lighthearted, but serious, all at the same time. The trip doesn’t stop with the Dark Forest. I have a small spoiler…she does make it to the land of the humans. And this is a hoot! She is at a complete loss as to why humans are the way they are. But with her new friends she meets on the way she is able to fumble through this passage. In true Sarah Noffke fashion there is a cliffhanger! But with that being said, she cleans up a mess and starts a new one for the next book. I very much look forward to reading the next in the series. Got me enchanted!!!!

The Variant Saga: Books 1 - 4 (The Variant Saga Boxset)

The Amber Project:
Holy dystopia! The Amber Project is a great dystopian journey. This is a genre I love to read and sometimes get a little iffy on how much it will differ from others in the same genre. The author sets the setting so that you are right there. The characters all feel incredibly real. You will connect with them very quickly. Humans are trying to keep their race going while living underground. The earth has been destroyed by the gas, Variant. During the entire story you are given snippets of audio recording from past and present regarding Variant and the various experiments the scientists and the military have been working on. During all of this you live and feel what the genetically altered kids are going through. You see why and how they are taken from their homes and sent to a place where they are trained like soldiers. And finally you experience the changes that they face internally and externally. They are forced to go to the surface for a mission. Many things are unknown and very dangerous. The journey they take and the uprisings going on below the surface are sure to keep you stuck on the story. The ending is very well written. It’s enough to wrap up this story but more than enough to keep you waiting on pins and needles for the next. This is my first story by JN Chaney and absolutely, under no circumstances, be the last. Well done!

Transient Echoes:
Just wow! I need more! This story picks up a few years after The Amber Project. We find out that Terry has been transported to another planet. Mei is working at the ruins but also has her own agenda on trying to find out what happened to Terry. The point of views go back and forth between the unknown planet and Earth. The world building is incredible. Earth is still nothing like we know of it today and the way the author describes the new Earth and the unknown planet that Terry is on is hard to resist. We get to experience Terry’s trials as he decides if he is going to continue to survive or not. And on the other hand we see Mei and John go through their own trials deciding if they need to move forward or not, on the low, to try and find out what happened to Terry. Both sides meet great new characters and many new journeys start. I have to warn you that this story is not like The Amber Project. Our characters have grown and are in completely different areas of their lives. I love how Transient Echoes compliments the Amber Project. It’s different and exciting! Kudos to JN Chaney for another great story!

Hope Everlasting:
Oh my gods! The story just keeps getting better and better. Each installment in this series is different from the other one. The world building expands in the greatest way and each new character is full of surprises. All the characters add something unique to the story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. And best of all…who can you trust? Loyalty and trust are huge in this story. Everyone is in search of the truth and an impending war is upon us. Our characters from Earth are right in the middle of the mess. Everlasting is a city full of technology and power. This city cannot breath the Variant air. All of the other natives to Kant are more primitive and with many different religious beliefs. When all of this clashes things really get out of hand. It’s a very emotional book that just does not stop. There is the perfect combination of emotion and action to make this an incredible addition to this series. Sending kudos to the author on this one! Well done!

The Vernal Memory:
An outstanding conclusion to this series! Just wow! The rebellion has made themselves known to our Earthling characters. For me, I found trust and loyalty were major factors in the story in general. Once again I found this to get stronger throughout this story. Throw an intense amount of greed in there and you have the perfect twist to an amazing ending. Terry has set out to help Garden (the rebels) find a weapon to help stop the Leadership in Everlasting. John Finn (Terry’s best friend from Earth) is helping Everlasting to locate Garden to bring the rebel leader in. Mei Curie (our other Earth best friend) is working on locating a cure for the Variant air. When all of them end up on different sides of this war the rollercoaster of action and emotion get intense! All of our Earthlings have made special bonds and friendships with natives of Kant. This is a place of the impossible becoming possible. Curiosity and countering traditional thought is what brings this book out on top. The twists and turns in this story are more than enough to justify the late nights spent reading this series. Once again this author has given us another amazing story that makes this series absolutely extraordinary. Bravo!!

#Review – The Vernal Memory (The Variant Saga #4) by J.N. Chaney

The Vernal Memory

Everlasting is on the brink of total war. As the terrorist organization known as Garden attempts to assassinate key members of the Leadership, another unseen hand has plans of its own…

Back at the human outpost, Mei Curie and her team are working to create the ultimate cure for the Variant gas. But with the war raging deep within the city, the shield could collapse at any moment, killing millions. Time is of the essence.

Meanwhile, Terry waits beneath Everlasting, having been rescued by Garden’s forces. In an effort to repay this debt, he agrees to assist them in a dangerous task. With Lena Sol at his side, Terry sets out across the sea to a foreign land, seeking a prize that may very well end this conflict once and for all.

Goodreads

Bravo!!
