#WOTR #Spotlight – Amy Hale @AuthorAmyHale

Amy Hale

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Amy Hale and I’m a huge dork. I also write books, dabble in photography, immerse myself in music, watch riffed movies, dream about my next trip to the ocean, and adore riding on the back of my husbands motorcycle. I’ve been married for over 25 years to a real life book boyfriend. I have two wonderful children and a cat that insists on holding my arms down while I write. I’m obsessed with Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, and The Walking Dead.

When and Why did you start to write?

I’ve always loved writing. In high school I spent a lot of time writing poems and short stories. Years later when my first child was born, I wrote my first children’s book and continued to make up short, fun stories for my kids from there. Life and stress got in they way and I discontinued my writing for several years, until internet research on some health problems I was dealing with pulled me back into writing for a cause. I spent 13 years writing, both professionally and personally, about health and diet related issues. But like many controversial topics, it became stressful and unfulfilling. After attending a writing/signing event in 2014 I was encouraged go back to fiction, this time with the intention of writing full length books. I’ve been going strong ever since!

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

There are so many authors and genres I enjoy reading. I know I will leave many out, but here’s a short list off the top of my head:
If you like historical romance I highly recommend Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, Lisa Kleypas, Julia London, Mary Balogh and some of the older works by Kat Martin and Pamela Britton (they’ve both moved to contemporary in recent years).
For science fiction/fantasy I love the work of Eric Asher, Jay Noel Reyes, Shelly Crane, JoAnna Morris, and Amy Miles, to name a few.
A few contemporary favorites are Jamie McGuire, Colleen Hoover, Denise Grover Swank, J.L. Berg, Amy Daws, Barb Speak, and Michelle Miller (I have to stop or I will go on forever.)

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

I think the most surprising thing for me is how the ideas can just pop into my head. My biggest fear when I started this journey was that I’d run out of ideas. But no matter how tough it gets, I always come up with something new. When I’m writing a scene and I’m not sure where it’s going, then POOF! there’s the twist or a crucial moment, I get very excited. I’m often just as surprised by what I write as my readers are.

What are you working on now?

I recently finished my paranormal series The Shadows Trilogy and am now starting on a new contemporary romance series set on a dude ranch. I’m very excited about this new project!

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

I’m a little of both actually. Before I start the story I know my beginning and end. The middle part is more elusive at first. I will pants it until I get a feel for the direction. Generally about half way through I’ll stop and evaluate to be sure I’m staying on track – this is usually where the plotting takes over.

#WOTR #Review #ReleaseBoost – Below the Surface by H.D’Agostino

32705502

Things aren’t always as they seem…

I’ve lived by that motto for most of my life. I’ve hid who I am, who I used to be, and what I’ve done from anyone who dares to get close to me. At nineteen I lost my parents. I thought nothing in the world could be more painful. I was wrong.

When I met Leo, my world seemed brighter. I felt hope for the first time in months. He promised me a life of luxury, but things aren’t always as they seem. Leo had a dark side, one that he hid from me. He pulled me under and held me captive, making death seem like the only way out.

It took me two years to escape. I ran never looking back until now. My life is finally coming together. I have people I trust, a job, and a safe place to call home, but things aren’t always as they seem.

One night, one phone call, one moment causes it to all crash down. Leo has my sister, and he wants to trade her for me. The one person I can trust is the only one who could also tear me apart… Detective Jeff Horn. He’s got secrets just like me, and seems to understand me better than I do myself.

How do I tell him my darkest secrets? How do I go back to a place that nearly broke me? How do I let him see Below the Surface?

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Ok before I begin with the yummy that is Jeff and Lena I must say……to love these characters’ even more than possible I recommend reading the entire series.  You don’t NEED to but the story will just be THAT much BETTER knowing what Jeff and Lena have been through before actually getting their book…..

Jeff….he really tried with Dani but his heart wasn’t all in it.  His heart was already taken by a certain barmaid who was fun and flirty but closed off and silent about her real life…AKA Lena.

Lena…we don’t know her story until this book but YIKES it’s not a good one.  Its full of sadness and heartbreak but survival!!  Most of all SURVIVAL!!  This girl does anything and everything to survive but once her loved ones are in danger she will sacrifice all to save them.  She will even trust a man that she is scared of because the attraction and pull is so strong.  The last time she had THAT she was betrayed and ruined.

The story does a lot of jumping through time because it is happening at the same time Mason and Dani’s book is happening.  This is part of the reason I recommend reading the whole series to better appreciate all that is happening to these two people.  When the time jump is finished we are in the present and the danger is full on at the front of the story.  Lena’s past has caught up to her present.  Jeff is there to help and protect her but once he SEES her past, he has more compassion and care for this woman.   The two are so involved with each other but they seem to think the other only cares because of the case.

When the two finally begin to date…..the feels are crazy…omg the Christmas Tree Scene….WOW….I mean..yeah…Mason is my baby daddy but Jeff almost stole my heart….LOL

This book was a great addition to the series !!

#review – Radiant by Elizabeth Hayley

Radiant (Diamond Trilogy #2)

He’s worth millions, but he’s worthless without her.

It’s been a month since her traumatic break-up with Derick, and Siobhan now lives in Detroit, where she can support herself and her painting career. But suddenly Derick’s back after flying halfway across the country for her. And though Siobhan’s body comes alive at his touch, she doesn’t know if she can trust him again….

Goodreads

Amazon

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

The story picks up where we left off.  Siobhan moved away and is totally doing her own thing without good old Derick meddling and dumping his money all over which caused her some issues.  Now you would think Derick would learn his lesson but nope he is back at it trying to make Siobhan happy when all he is doing is making matters worse.  Sometimes money isn’t everything Derick.  Derick doesn’t realize that love isn’t what you can buy……..ya know money can’t buy you happiness….life lesso there old Derick.

I love these ladies and most of their novels.  However, this book just didn’t seem to engage me as much as their other stories.  I am just hoping that it’s because I am waiting for the last/final book in the series for it all to come together.

Elizabeth Hayley is actually “Elizabeth” and “Hayley,” two friends who love reading romance novels to obsessive levels. This mutual love prompted them to put their English degrees to good use by penning their own. The product is Pieces of Perfect, their debut novel. They learned a ton about one another through the process, like how they clearly share a brain and have a persistent need to text each other constantly (much to their husbands’ chagrin).

They live with their husbands and kids in a suburb of Philadelphia. Thankfully, their children are still too young to read.

Elizabeth Hayley’s writing motto is best captured by the words of Patrick Dennis: “I always start with a clean piece of paper and a dirty mind.”

#Review – The Amber Project (The Variant Saga #1) by JN Chaney

The Amber Project (Volume 1)

In 2157, a mysterious gas known as Variant spreads across the globe, killing or mutating most organic life. The surviving humans take refuge in an underground city, determined to return home. But after generations of failures and botched attempts, hope is beginning to dwindle. That is, until a young scientist makes a unique discovery—and everything changes. Suddenly, there’s reason to hope again, and it rests within a group of genetically engineered children that are both human and Variant.

Terry is one of these children, modified and trained to endure the harsh conditions of a planet he cannot begin to understand. After years of preparation, Terry thinks he knows what to expect. But the reality is far stranger than anything he can imagine—and what he will become is far more dangerous.

Goodreads

Holy dystopia! The Amber Project is a great dystopian journey. This is a genre I love to read and sometimes get a little iffy on how much it will differ from others in the same genre. The author sets the setting so that you are right there. The characters all feel incredibly real. You will connect with them very quickly. Humans are trying to keep their race going while living underground. The earth has been destroyed by the gas, Variant. During the entire story you are given snippets of audio recording from past and present regarding Variant and the various experiments the scientists and the military have been working on. During all of this you live and feel what the genetically altered kids are going through. You see why and how they are taken from their homes and sent to a place where they are trained like soldiers. And finally you experience the changes that they face internally and externally. They are forced to go to the surface for a mission. Many things are unknown and very dangerous. The journey they take and the uprisings going on below the surface are sure to keep you stuck on the story. The ending is very well written. It’s enough to wrap up this story but more than enough to keep you waiting on pins and needles for the next. This is my first story by JN Chaney and absolutely, under no circumstances, be the last. Well done!

Indie author Amy Jarecki makes her print debut with a brand-new series about rugged Highland lords.

She’ll put her life on the line for him . . .

When Akira Ayres finds the brawny Scot with a musket ball in his thigh, the healer has no qualms about doing whatever it takes to save his life. Even if it means fleeing with him across the Highlands to tend to his wounds while English redcoats are closing in. Though Akira is as fierce and brave as any of her clansmen, even she’s intimidated by the fearsome, brutally handsome Highlander who refuses to reveal his name.

Yet she can never learn his true identity.

Geordie knows if Akira ever discovers he’s the Duke of Gordon, both her life and his will be forfeit in a heartbeat. The only way to keep the lass safe is to ensure she’s by his side day and night. But the longer he’s with her, the harder it becomes to think of letting her go. Despite all their differences, despite the danger-he will face death itself to make her his . . .

HIGHLAND DUKE excerpt

Curled under Geordie’s arm, Akira finally stopped shivering. All around them rain splashed. Everything was soaked and their little alcove smelled of horse—not a horrid smell, but not one she’d choose for her boudoir, either. If she had a boudoir.

She chose to ignore the voice in the back of her head telling her it wasn’t proper to allow a strange man to put his arm around her shoulders and offer her warmth. But there was something in the way Geordie looked at her that made her feel all warm inside and, moreover, protected. Aye, he’d been in a great deal of pain—was still in great pain—but since he roused from his last bout of unconsciousness, he’d behaved admirably. He’d brought the horse under control, figured out where they were, and formed a plan to take them to someone he could trust to provide her with an escort home.

With darkness, the air grew colder. Clutching her fists under her chin, Akira curled into Geordie’s heat. He smoothed his palm along her outer arm, his touch soothing.

When he turned his lips toward her, his warm breath skimmed across her forehead. “Try to sleep.” The gentle burr of his voice imparted all the more comfort.

But she couldn’t get too comfortable; she must to do her duty. He was still her patient. “I’m the healer. I should be telling you to do the same.”

His hazel gaze drifted to her mouth, and he grinned.

“Very well.” He pulled his arm away, but not before running his fingers across her back. Blessed tingles spread over her skin as if she’d been caressed by feathers. Oh, heaven help her, his touch was unbelievably sublime. If only she could ask him to run his fingers back and forth again—just one more time.

She reached for the hem of his kilt, then quickly snapped her fingers away. What had she been thinking? True, she’d applied the salve before, but that was when he was mostly unconscious and definitely before he’d put his arm around her shoulder and smiled at her like a…like a…brawny Highlander.

“Have you gone shy, lass?” he asked with a hint of humor in his deep brogue.

#WOTR #Spotlight – H D’Agostino @hdagostino001

Heather D'Agostino

About the Author

I’m a stay-at-home mom turned author. I live in Central NY where it is currently snowing and winter lasts as long as summer. When I’m not writing, I’m usually at the dance studio with my daughter or the soccer fields with my son. I’m a coffee addict along with anything sweet. I have no problem striking up a conversation with a total stranger, and some of my best friends were met through the internet.

When and Why did you start to write?

One day I was reading a short story and decided, “Hey, I can do this.” I was very apprehensive when I first started out. It was very intimidating having a stranger read my work, but I put the story on a fanfiction site. I got great reviews, and so I did another one. I had written 4 full length novels when one reviewer messaged me and asked if I had ever published anything. They said they’d buy the story I’d been working on if I ever decided to make it a book. I’d never considered writing for a profit. It was just a fun hobby. After thinking on it for a few days, I decided to take the plunge. I searched for a beta, and then reworked the story so it would no longer be fanfiction. I tweaked the characters, changed a few names, and Unbreak Me was born. This was published in April 2013, and I’ve been going strong ever since.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I don’t read as much as I used to, but there are a few that I one click. Lately though I’ve found a lot of new to me authors. To name a few of the always read authors… Kristen Proby, Abbi Glines, J. Sterling, M. Leighton, Shey Stahl, Skye Turner, Jillian Dodd, Heidi McLaughlin,   Michelle Lynn, Vi Keeland, K. Bromberg, and I’m sure there are others.

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

When I first started writing I was so scared of running out of ideas. I was right in the middle of my second book and was thinking “what happens when I finish? Will the next story just come to me? Am I going to be a one hit wonder?” It really did worry me back then. Once I took the pressure off, the stories started coming like wildfire. Now I have more voices in my head then I do time to write them. I can’t turn it off, and while it’s nice to have that problem, it’s also a burden. Sometimes I get headaches from trying to do other things. I’ve missed family time because I’m too busy listening to my characters. It’s taken me a little over a year to find balance, and I think my kids and husband are better off now that I’ve have.

The writing part is easy. It’s the rest that’s hard. AKA the publishing and marketing part.

What are you working on now?

I just finished the first draft of the next Cook Brothers book, Trevor’s book. I’m starting edits on the next Witness book, and I’m getting ready to plan out the next Sutter family book.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

I think I’m a little of both. I usually know ahead of time how I want a story to end, what the main issue between the characters will be, and how they’ll resolve it. As far as the meat that surrounds that? Well that’s the pantser part. I just let it come to me, and sometimes a character will completely throw me for a loop. Sometimes the best books come from those moments though.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

How long we have waited for our favorite Russia to get his book.  I think he is a Sadist that any reader will fall in love with.  To see him love Brie just as much a Thane.  To watch him protect her just as fierce as Sir, it is just so swoon worthy.

Rytsar is the character who has commanded the series from the start.  I mean I remember my thoughts about him in the first scenes with him and LOVED him….I feared him for sure and was scared outta my mind because he is a very aggressive sadist but I loved him completely.   I have been wanting him to find love and love that he has found someone to open his heart but he needs a love all for himself.

Brie is a mess and still trying to navigate life with Thane in the hospital.  She is still dealing with the Beast and her attacks on her family but mainly she is lost without her condor love.  Rytsar is the perfect person to help her with her life and living during Thanes hospitalization.  Each of Sir’s friends have been around at the right time and Rytsar’s time is now.  He made sure that no one hurts his radost moya or his moye solntse!!

I loved the story but my heart is aching because of the final scenes..I need more and I need to know what happens soon.  My Russian Knight needs me!!!

#CoverReveal – Max Henry MC

Title: Existential
Series: Fallen Aces MC #4
Author: Max Henry
Genre: MC Romance Suspense
Release Date: April 18, 2017
How much suffering can a man withstand before he finally breaks? A question I used to ask myself often. Now I know the answer.

As president of the Fallen Aces MC Fort Worth chapter, I’m looked to for guidance in times of crisis. I’m expected to set personal grievances aside and lead by example. Yet how can I do that when those grievances robbed me of my family, my life? My reason to be at the head of the table?

My father: murdered. My baby sister: killed the same day. And my other sister? A mystery. I’m drowning in my desolation and yet nobody seems to care. Or maybe it’s the fact I won’t let them close enough to help? Either way, my losses are my own, and I’ll deal with them the only way I know how—by punishing myself.

I’ve got it all figured out, at least, I thought I did. Until one woman, a traveller passing by, unravels the master plan. I see it in her eyes, the same distance, the same feeling that she doesn’t belong—that her time here is wasted.

One woman who mirrors me in every way, and suddenly I find a reason to hold off the reaper a little longer. A reason to stay at the head of the table. A reason to show those who’ve hurt me that, although they brought the beast to its knees, I won’t lay down to die without a fight.

Existential is book number four in the Fallen Aces MC series, but can be read as a standalone.

He reaches out and threads his fingers under mine, bringing our joined hands between us on the floor. “Do you think it’s weak if a man admits his fears?”

I frown, squeezing his hand tight. “No.” Why would he even think that? “I think it’s honorable. It takes so much bravery to admit you have faults.”

“You think?”

“I know.” After all, aren’t I the authority on keeping faults a secret?

He sniffs, staring at the toes of his boots where they rest against the base of the washer. “Since everything went to shit last year, I get … I guess the only way to describe it is angry at myself.”

“What for? Do you blame yourself for what happened?”

His head drops back again, and he closes his eyes as his thumb traces a path on the back of my hand. “Yeah, but I know I shouldn’t. Still, knowin’ what I’m thinkin’ is wrong doesn’t make it go away. I still blame myself for everything, still hate myself for it.”

“That’s natural, though. You went through something traumatic, from what you’ve said of it, so you’ve got strong reactions that need a place to rest.”

“I went on a bender after they died,” he explains, opening his eyes to stare at the ceiling. “Drank, binged on coke, picked fights with my friends, and it wasn’t until I couldn’t remember what it was like to be straight that I finally realized why I did it.”

“Distraction?”

“To die.”

A lump lodges in my throat as I take him in. At face value he’s strength and dominance. He’s a huge guy, intimidating to those who don’t know him, with his black clothing, leather, and piercings. He puts out an image of power, over others, and himself. But underneath it all he hides this.

“Don’t,” I utter. “Don’t say that again.”

“Why?” He rolls his head to look me in the eye. “It’s the truth, Dagne. I don’t want to do this anymore. Every day is hard. I wake up wishin’ it was time to go to sleep again, dreadin’ the day before it’s even happened.” His face moves through frustration and anger, glimpses of pain and despair between. “You have any idea what it’s like to just want to curl up in a ball and pretend the world doesn’t exist?”

“Yeah, I do,” I say. “I also know what it’s like to want to die. To know you’re too gutless to do it yourself, so you wish for something that’ll do it for you, like an illness, an accident, or a masochistic fucking father who hates the fact you breathe the same air as him.” Hooch’s eyes go wide, and I realize in that moment tears streak my cheeks. But fuck it—he needs to hear it. “I also know what it’s like to be hurt so bad that you finally believe that day has come, and in that second your foolishness and selfish thoughts come back to haunt you. What it’s like to realize when you’re faced with your own mortality that you don’t want to die … you just wish you were someone else, living another life.”

“Dagne—”

“Ah.” I lift my finger to stop him. “Nope. I’m not finished, mister.”

A small smile plays at the corner of his lips, and he reaches out to wipe my tears. “Carry on.”

“What you have to face is that you have the power to be somebody else. Fuck what your head tells you, Hooch. Your mind is a goddamn liar. It feeds off your fear, shows you your flaws while hiding your strengths. If you’re not happy,” I say, jabbing him in the chest, “change it. Do something about it. But don’t quit.”

“I’ve tried.” He captures my hand, focusing on the flesh of my palm as he traces the lines with his finger. “I really have, but my battery’s run dry, girl.”

“No,” I say, shaking my head. “It hasn’t. You just haven’t found what charges it yet.”

Max is the author of dark, and highly emotional romance. Her Butcher Boys series is centered around a group of ex-street kids who have teamed up with an indebted motorcycle club to take down a notorious drug lord. And her new series, the Fallen Aces MC, is a spin-off from this dark and dangerous world. Her writing has been described as ‘gripping’, and ‘addictive’, taking you on an ’emotional roller coaster ride’.

Originally born and bred in New Zealand, Max now resides with her family in beautiful and sunny Queensland, Australia.
