#WOTR23 #attendingauthor – Megan Kelly

Megan Kelly

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Megan Kelly, lover of chocolate and writer of stories. My kids have grown into wonderful humans, so now I take imaginary people and whip them into shape. I’m a huge believer in family and happily ever after. I live in the St. Louis area, where the weather has an imagination–and sense of humor–of its own.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

All have challenges! Everything in the first book needs to be imagined, filled in and fleshed out. That’s fun as well as a lot of work. The following books in a series bring some established people and places, which can be either restrictive or a godsend, and sometimes both.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I love my characters, and since each has his/her own struggles, every book feels different. The first three “Love in Little Tree” books feature the same wedding and some characters who are in all the books. When I’m revisiting a scene readers saw in another book, I tell it from another character’s viewpoint. It challenges and amuses me to see it through different eyes, to reveal or hide things in dialogue or action.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Find a support group. Seriously. I am energized when I spend time with other writers. I have non-writer friends in whose company I can forget the stress of my writer life. My husband knows how important writing is to my well-being. Surround yourself with positivity, and give yourself an escape if you need it. A day off. A handful of chocolate. Whatever it takes.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I’m a binge writer, so I’ll write until I’m emotionally spent, then have to take several days’ break to recharge. I’d say how long it takes depends on the scene, which also determines the recovery time.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Ooooh, how fun! I’d want Chris Hemsworth to play Jack Walker in “The Wedding Rescue.” He needs to be believable as a cowboy, rugged and sexy, but not a jerk. Jack is a widowed father to a little girl, and I think Chris would be awesome in the role.
Wait, wait–Chris Evans did that movie where he was the uncle of a gifted girl, and he was wonderful. OH, but what about Hugh Jackman?! He played a believable cowboy and he’s yummy–uh, I mean, sensitive. Okay, I guess casting isn’t my strength.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

The Dodgers should eat magical turnips to win. There, I said it! LOL! (go ahead and read it to find out why, I dare you)

Psychics that are allergic to the sun and vegan vampires….what a pair! Wait, I think I got that mixed up, or did I? Clara and Damien are quite the improbable pair. These two are literally the exact opposite of each other. They are brought into the world of the Delta Underground Operatives and are put on a special mission as the newest assassin duo. The way these two get along is great. In true Sarah Noffke fashion, these two are witty, sarcastic, and aren’t afraid to throw a punch either. The banter is hilarious but will also ground you as they become closer. Awwwww! I think they like each other! Whoa! Maybe not…. Jk!

These two are presented with an impossible mission with little training but come together as a force to be reckoned with. I couldn’t stop turning the pages and ABSOLUTELY need more. I am incredibly happy that Sarah continues to write books for me! 😊

#WOTR23 #attendingauthor – Loren Beeson

Loren Beeson

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Loren Beeson and I write spicy contemporary romance and romantic suspense books! I live in Texas with my hubby, son, and two dogs. It’s rare to find me without a Cabernet or coffee in hand, and I love a good vampire romance!

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I would say the books that follow. Especially if they’re like my Betting On Love trilogy where each book has a HEA but the background drama continues through each one.

Romantic Suspense is so fun but challenging to write because as the author, I’m having to maintain two separate story lines as well as making sure all the plot points get connected along the way.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

My absolute favorite thing is to lead the reader to believe they know what’s going to happen… and then flip the script! I love surprising people by keeping predictable tropes or certain situations fresh and UNpredictable.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

It’s all about your circle! Sometimes writing can be lonely. You’re strapped to a deadline you had no business making so tight, back against the wall with only the voices in your head to keep you company.

Who is your voice of reason in the writing world?

Your mom might tell you your book is a best seller, but would she have a keen eye for how your hero was going from hot to cold and back again within a few paragraphs? How about story pacing or plot holes?

I’m huge on having at least a couple of people I can call at any point to ask questions like, “How stupid does this idea sound?” Or, “Please help. I’m stuck on chapter twelve, my dialogue is trash, and I need a brainstorm sesh.” (Don’t forget the wine 😉 )

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

8-9 hours. Some of the best advice I ever received was to treat my writing career like a day job. Working from home is the ultimate challenge no matter how disciplined you are! But setting a work schedule for yourself even if it’s a couple hours a night will do you some good!

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Oh, Hazel. She’s a badass biker babe from the last book in the Betting On Love trilogy (Waging War) and man was she fun to write! I love creating strong females who know how to hold their own, but one of my favorite things to do is write them totally opposite of me—or in Hazel’s case, as a woman I aspire to be!

What is your definition of success?

Oh! I have a quote for this. My male lead in my island romance ‘One More Kiss’ was giving some advice to the leading lady, Kate. He said, “Success isn’t determined by status or title…It’s determined by hard work, dedication, and pride in everything you do.”

Work hard, be authenticity YOU, and the rest will come.

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

I love interacting and talking with readers! If you’ve ever read one of my novels, THANK YOU! And never hesitate to shoot me a message or email <3

#NewRelease #BookPromo – The Act of Trusting (Braxton U Book 1) by Lexi Bissen

There was a sadness in her clear, gray eyes that I could see she tried to hide. A fight with her inner demons she didn’t want to show anyone…

Camden Collins
Life was going well for me. I was on the right track: captain of the soccer team, grades were passing, and I had the respect of my team. Girls threw themselves at me. It was every twenty-year-old’s dream.
Then I saw her…
One look at her, and it all changed. Something about her drew me in. A sense of protectiveness to guard this small, sad girl. In her eyes, I could see the fight she had within herself…and I wanted to be there for her. To protect her and be someone to lean on while she fought whatever it was. Nothing else seemed to matter but the dark-haired, beautiful girl I couldn’t stay away from.

Blaire Wentworth
I wasn’t the same girl I was four years ago. My life was stolen from me one night and I’d never have the chance to get old me back. Now I was just existing, not living. I went through the motions of my everyday routine, staying quiet and keeping to myself. Trusting and letting people in was a constant struggle.
Until he showed up…
I’d never seen someone like him before. Not once had I described a guy as beautiful, but that’s what he was. He struck something in me, and I didn’t know how to handle that. I was chasing nightmares no one knew about. Ones I kept to myself for a reason. Could I let this new person into my life that I had kept closed off from many for far too long? What if I let my guard down and he ended up destroying me?
And that became my greatest fear…

Helen Scott – romance author, all around nerd, pet mom, and wife to my amazing hubby

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The ones after it! Especially the last one!

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Trying different subgenres and tropes!

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

It’s a marathon not a sprint. Fall in love with your idea and let your instincts guide you. And most of all, read!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

probably around 4 or 5 hours

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

That’s like asking to pick my favorite book! I can’t do it! I will say the most challenging to write so far has been Lyric from my Sweetest Revenge series because she’s so damaged.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I’d go with my vampire series, Blood Vow University. Elisabeth Olsen would play Cordelia, the FMC, and Sebastian Stan would play Rook, the MMC that’s seen in Vampire’s Nest.

What is your definition of success?

Having happy readers!

Touching Oblivion: Tasting Madness, Book 2

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

She gave, we took, then I demanded more.

I had my reasons, but none of them are good enough to validate what happened.

I need her to forgive me, but I don’t know if I went too far this time.

Going through the motions.

Starting over in a new state, at a new school, is easy compared to losing something I never really had in the first place, but I’ve gotten good at faking it.

Too bad I feel like this time pretending I’m okay might actually break me.
Touching Oblivion is the second book of the Tasting Madness Series. This is Reverse Harem novel with adult themes and situations told in duel POV.

Review by Twinsie Dee

Waylynn was just accused of being a junkie because Memphis seen her pill bottle and it gave him a flash back to seeing his parents like that. She kicked both of the guys out and went totally quiet on them not returning text, phone calls and even thinking about dropping her class to stay out of the path of the guys. But finally, Memphis gets her to listen to him and tells her that he’s sorry and tells her his feelings for her. Waylynn forgives them and they are better then ever learning more about each other and in more ways then one Waylynn is learning to trust Oz and Memphis to the point where she is starting to tell Memphis a bit about her past and taking her walls down a little at a time. Things keep getting in the way for these 3 will they be able to keep their relationship strong and how will Waylynn feel about adding 1 more into her heart, rumors, pictures and secrets will either tear them apart for good or make them stronger then ever. I didnt think i could love these characters even more then i did but oh buddy did Albany make them way better the heartaches the emotions and the sexy scenes are hot that your going to need a fan to cool you down.

Albany lives in Michigan where she’s happily married to her high school sweetheart. She spends most of her time juggling her four children’s extracurricular activities, with her nose stuck in a book. When not reading you can find her writing her very own book boyfriends. Albany’s passion is writing romance with real characters that are far from perfect, but always seem to find their own happily ever afters.

#WOTR23 #Authorspotlight – Shannyn Schroeder

Shannyn Schroeder

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I write steamy contemporary romance set in Chicago. I have multiple series surrounding big Irish-American families. I like writing about essay families both the ones we have bye blood and by choice. I also write heist romances as Sloane Steele. I am a mom of 3 mostly grown people, I work as a curriculum writer and part-time English teacher and executive functions coach.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The hardest part about the first book is setting up the world – which for me, means figuring out who all the siblings are. But that’s the fun part. It’s harder as the series goes on because I never know how much to include about past couples and things that happened. It’s a fine line of making new readers aware of things without boring the readers who have been there since the beginning.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I try to play with different tropes and if I’m not feeling it, I’ll write something else for a while. That’s how I ended up writing a heist romance series. Then I was happy to jump back into my Chicago neighborhood families.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Find other writers. If you have a supportive partner or family (I haven’t), they don’t really get what it’s like to be stuck or to be excited when you unravel a plot point. Other writers get it. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my writer friends at Chicago-North Romance Writers and my Panera supper club pals.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

That’s a total crap shoot. It depends on where I am in the writing process, but I try for at least an hour a day. Because of my day jobs, that doesn’t always happen, so then I do more on the weekends.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I don’t hide that Jimmy O’Malley is my favorite hero. He’s overprotective and bossy as the oldest sibling in his family. He’s not much of a talker, so of course, I paired him with his best friend’s sister who does nothing but talk. Jimmy and Moira were my first grumpy-sunshine pair (although I didn’t think about that at the time) and they will always be special to me.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I could do this all day because I create a collage for each book before I start writing. I use actors as placeholders for each character. The book I am currently working on (In Fine Form – The Doyle Family #2) the hero, Declan would be played by Nico Tortella (who played Josh on the TV Younger) and Renee would be played by Hayley Atwell (who played Peggy Carter)

What is your definition of success?

As a writer, success means having readers who look forward to my next book. When people have me on their auto-buy list, that’s a sign of success.

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

If anyone wants to try my books, I always have at least 3 books free – the first from 3 different series.

#AudioReview – A Dirty Business: Kings of New York by: Tijan – Narrators CJ Bloom and Joe Arden

From New York Times bestselling author Tijan comes a raw, tempestuous romance between the criminal underworld and a parole officer that paints a thin line between right and wrong.

When Jess Montell meets Trace West at a hockey game, she doesn’t know his name or occupation. What she does know is there’s an instant attraction that’s impossible to ignore—or forget. And forgetting is exactly what she wants to do when she learns he’s not just a successful Wall Street suit but the heir to one of New York’s biggest Mafia families.

The last thing Trace needs is a romantic anything with law enforcement, and parole officer Jess has trouble written all over her. Too bad he likes trouble. Especially when it’s a brunette bombshell with attitude and legs for days.

She’s an absolute spitfire, and he wants to stoke that flame.

Trace didn’t ask for the Mafia life. Jess doesn’t want any part of it. They both know it’s safer to stay away, but the temptation is too hard to resist—no matter how great the danger.

Goodreads

Review by Twinsie Melinda

I purchased this audio book.

I have to say I enjoy reading Tijans books and don’t pass up the chance to read her stories. You never know were the twist and turns are going to lead you and this book was no different. I enjoyed all the characters and cannot wait to read about the rest of them. Narrators CJ Bloom and Joe Arden did a great job I did not want to press pause at any point during this book. They truly gave life to Jess Montell and Trace West.

Jess is a parole officer and does not let parolees get away with anything even if they are not her parolees. Jess meets Trace who she later finds out is in the mafia…not only in the mafia but is the mafia. She tries to stay out of his business because of her job but she cannot stay away from him.

I loved Trace from the first sighting of him in the stairway. He was amazing with Jess. Trace knew she believes in upholding the law and he gave her space. He found a way to be there when needed. These two had explosive chemistry.

I fell in love with all the Characters of course they all have their good characteristics and sometimes I wanted to slap them over the head. Decisions and sacrifices will be made.  I was left hanging on that ending and I need to know what happens next.

Tijan is a New York Times Bestselling author that writes suspenseful and unpredictable novels. Her characters are strong, intense, and gut-wrenchingly real with a little bit of sass on the side. Tijan began writing later in life and once she started, she was hooked. She’s written multi-bestsellers including the Carter Reed Series, the Fallen Crest Series, and Ryan’s Bed among others. She is currently writing to her heart’s content in north Minnesota with an English Cocker Spaniel she adores.

Goodreads

Review by Twinsie Melinda

I purchased this audiobook.

Anne is a new to me author and so was the narrator Emma Wilder.  I enjoyed the narration that Emma did on this one. All of the accents and voices she used for each character was great and she was consistent throughout the book.

Gwen moved to NY, found a guy she thought was good and had a vibe of “bad boy”. Only she realized a bit too late that the guy was a horrible man. She decided to go to California to start fresh. Her best friend, Amy, decided to join her. Once they are in California Gwen runs into Cade, a sexy biker.

Cade Fletcher knows Gwen will be his. He has a lot of work ahead of him for every brick he manages to take down on her wall she puts up more. Cade had his wonderful moments but other times I was ready to throttle him. He did make a great alpha male that loved Gwen to a fault. Cade did what he could to keep Gwen safe but danger still seemed to find Gwen.

There was so much drama, suspense and angst in this book.  It made it a page turner and Emma did a wonderful job capturing the characters and keeping me turned into the story. I am so ready to read Amy’s story and even Bull’s book.  I am so intrigued by these characters and need to know more about them.

Anne Malcom has been an avid reader since before she can remember, her mother responsible for her book addiction. It started with magical journeys into the world of Hogwarts and Middle Earth, then as she grew up her reading tastes grew with her. Her obsession with books and romance novels in particular gave Anne the opportunity to find another passion, writing. Finding writing about alpha males and happily ever afters more fun than reading about them, Anne is not about to stop any time soon.

#WOTR23 #AuthorSpotlight – Heather Young-Nichols

Heather Young-Nichols

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Heather Young-NIchols is a USA Today Bestselling author of contemporary and paranormal romances. A native of the great and often very cold state of Michigan, she is better known at home and to her friends as the Snarker-in-Chief. A job she excels at beyond anything she could have imagined. She loves many things, but especially cold coffee, hot books, and baseball. But not necessarily in that order.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I think all of the books in a series pose special problems. The first book because you really need to create something that makes people want to keep reading. This is an issue with the following books as well. But I also think that the more you get to know your characters it does become a little easier.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

My contemporary books are a series of standalones so it’s easier to stay fresh when you have new characters. With the paranormal books that revolve around the same couple, you get throw in more bad guys to keep things moving and keep them exciting.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

I’m not the best for advice on emotions. As a Gen X member, we weren’t really allowed to show emotions growing up so I’m very good at keeping mine well hidden. I’d say, rest and doing something else relieves the stress. Walking away when you need to.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

My writing block is about two and a half hours Monday through Friday. However, my writing goal is one chapter a day Monday through Friday. So if I do that in less than the tie alloted, sometimes I move on to other things, and sometimes I keep writing. It just depends.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Ugh. It’s literally like asking who my favorite child is. I love them all equally. Just in different ways. If I had to choose one, most days, I’d probably say Gemma Diamati from Love by the Rules because she’s awsome and a badass but I’m pretty sure she’s the one I put through the most. Sorry, Gemma.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

That’s hard because some of my characters are inspired by real actors or musicians. For example, Cross was inspired by Rian Dawson from All Time Low. I was at their concert, literally watching them play, when I got the idea for the Courting Chaos series. Can he act? I don’t know.

What is your definition of success?

My definition of success is having people that I don’t know who want to read my books. I know. That’s the easy answer but that’s all I ever wanted when I started this. In my eyes, I was successful the first time I sold a book that wasn’t to a friend or family member.
