#WOTR18 #AttendingAuthor – Author Spotlight of Vivian Ward @AuthorVivian

Vivian Ward

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Vivian Ward and I’m a bookaholic, chocoholic, wine-loving wife, mom, friend, and romance writer. I’m a full-time writer but when I’m not writing, I’m usually cooking, cleaning, helping the kids with homework, or playing with our two dogs.

My grandma was a huge influence in my life, and I owe everything to her. She taught me to always shoot for the stars and to stay in school. Because of her, I am strong and independent, which is how I write my heroines. My favorite color is purple, and my hometown is St. Louis. You will always see these two things in every book that I write.

I love meeting new people and try to make friends everywhere I go. I will never give up writing because my stories are my life. I love conjuring up interesting characters and unique situations. I also like hearing from my readers, so if you’re reading this, DROP ME A LINE AND SAY HI!

When and Why did you start to write?

I actually went to medical school but before I could graduate, I found out that I was pregnant and was about six months along when I finished school. Family always come first, so I looked for alternative ways to use my medical knowledge and started writing medical articles for LIVESTRONG.com (under a pseudonym). When my contract ended, I was sad because I loved writing but, unfortunately, they could not renew it.

I began writing short stories. Okay, I’ll be honest. I wrote SEXY short stories FOR my husband. He FLOVED them! He encouraged me to keep writing (what guy wouldn’t?), so I did and I had a lot of fun with it!

I didn’t start publishing on Amazon until 2013 and when I did, I published short, erotic stories. Around 2015, I decided to try my hand at longer works because I wanted to write romance novels, but I was scared. My sexy shorts (that’s what I called my short stories) sold like hot cakes, but romance novels? It was intimidating. There is some SERIOUS competition out there!

I bought HUNDREDS of dollars of reference books. Some old, some new. I studied and read, for almost three months straight. I did TONS of research and felt like I was back in college. It still wasn’t enough, so I watched so many videos and downloaded plot sheets. I must’ve sat at the kitchen table for hours and hours every week as I practiced plotting before I finally published my first novel.

Writing longer works was definitely a challenge, but I’m so glad that I forced myself to step up to the next level. I believe that writing is a very rewarding career.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I read a wide range of authors, and recommendations vary based on what my friends/readers are looking for. My favorite contemporary romance book is Arsen: A Broken Love Story by Mia Asher. My favorite dark romance book (right now) is Sick Fux by Tillie Cole. Believe it or not, I like reading Amish romance stories, too, but those aren’t my “favorite” or “go to”. Those are nice when I’m in a book hangover after my dark romance characters are put through the ringer.

I also like reading dystopians, thrillers (Gone Girl is my FAVE!), autobiographies and books about cults (don’t judge…..they fascinate the hell out of me). I’m sure that I’m probably forgetting other genres that I read, but I mostly read romance.

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

What I find surprising is that I can write until the minute I sit down to do my blurb. Words cease to exist in my vocabulary when it comes time to write a catchy description that captivates readers and pulls them in.

Other than that, I’ve found ways to tighten up my writing, which I’m always working on. It’s not an easy task. There are some authors who think of (and remember!) everything in their book. I can’t tell you how many times my characters start off with honey-colored eyes and end up with jaded gems.

What are you working on now?

Right now, I’m working The Risky Series. It’s a trilogy and the second book is due at the end of March and the last installment is due at the end of April.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

A little of both. I like to somewhat plot to get an idea of where the story is headed but I find that if I plot the entire book, I get very bored with the story, I feel like my characters are limited, and I lose interest because I feel “confined” like I have to write it “just like this.”

I prefer to let my characters take me on THEIR journey, just as long as we hit those key points. It’s okay if they don’t like each other for a minute. It’s okay if they changed some of the storyline or setting. I’d rather be truly creative and let the story flow as I write it, and tighten it up during editing.

#WOTR18 #AttendingAuthor – Author Spotlight Evan Grace

Evan Grace

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Evan Grace, I’m a married 41 year old mom to two boys and one furbaby. When I’m not writing I work for a large home healthcare agency, and spend my weekends bossing nurses around :). I love to read when I have time, and worship Kristen Ashley, Aurora Rose Reynolds, Kaylee Ryan, and love CA Harms! I’m a suck for cheesy disaster flicks, and I’m a die hard Walking Dead fan. I’ve also watched The Office from beginning to end over ten times. I’m a weightlifter, it’s my stress releaser and only run if someone is chasing me. I love music and listen to anything but new country, it’s just not my jam. I do love 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music the best.

When and Why did you start to write?

8 1/2 years ago I worked in a labor and delivery unit, and had been a massive reader. like the librarians at my library new me by name. A thought came to me and I thought “hey that could be a book” A friend of mine said “lets write” so her and I both started our books. I finished mine and it was garbage, but I love it. Then I got the idea of Starting Over my first published book. It took three years and multiple rewrites before I finally got it published. I write because I love creating these stories that I hope speak to others, and I’ve got to do something with all of the voices in my head.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I read Kristen Ashley, Aurora Rose Reynolds, CA Harms, Kaylee Ryan, Meghan Quinn, Suzanne Wright, Joanna Wylde, Shayla Black, Jewel E. Ann, HJ Bellus, Natasha Madison.

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

hmmmm….just how helpful other authors have been.

What are you working on now?

Book 1 in a new series, tentatively called Tales of a Tomboy.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

I plot a general idea, but I’m a pantser

#WOTR – #Review – Curse of the Raven (The Union Series #5) Shawn Reilly

Curse of the Raven (The Union Series #5)

In the wake of the battle with the Gothi, Elle is struggling. Insecurity and chaos have taken a toll on her, and her heart longs for just a few moments of uninterrupted peace with the man she loves. When, once again, the Lakes are faced with even more trials and tribulations, she comes to the realization that in her own despair—completely unaware of doing so, she has left her man in doubt. And yet, even when she resolves to assure him of her feelings she fears her ex-boyfriend’s memories, which are stuck in his head, may rise to the surface.
Asher Lake sets out on a mission to find his predecessor Grant—who exists in his wolf form in the woods of Brokenridge, all the while knowing that there is no answer to the Raven’s curse on his own life—at least none he will accept. Knowing that his end is imminent he resigns to fate. The only thing he has to do in the meantime—other than continuing to strengthen his position as leader to the Union and keeping his family in line, is convince the woman he’s willing to sacrifice everything for of just how much he cares. However, even when his adversaries continue to haunt him and more and more questions rise up to torment him, his true quandary lies in this—knowing just how to go about popping the question…again.

Goodreads

I can’t get enough of the Union Series!!! All the trials and tribulations, twists and turns, and most importantly the stolen moments while living life to the fullest really sets this series apart from others. This is book 5 in this series and it continues to grow with new characters and crazy plot twists. I am not sure how the author dreamt this stuff up but the series has kept me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning and this installment holds true. The entire story is told from all of the characters points of view. Some people don’t care for this but the author does it in a way that we know what each character is feeling and what each one is going through. The characters are so real that you can’t help but want to help them fight or give them a hug when they are down. They continue to fight the good fight but continue to uncover new secrets that always put a kink in things. I feel like they are getting sooooooo close to Grant (they have even talked to him!!!) and trying to get the curse put to rest.  Asher is taking the time to get closer to Elle and trying to get some alone time but some of those moments continue to get stolen with all the chaos that comes with being Keeper. I am worried for Asher though as I sometimes get the feeling that he is done fighting but at other times I know he won’t give up. He is a tough cookie to figure out sometimes, but hey, that’s why I love him, haha! I thoroughly enjoy how this story ends but I am sitting on pins and needles to start reading book 6. My only hope is that by the time I am finished with 6 that 7 will be out. Crossing fingers!!!

When it seemed like I was only an F away from flunking out of the sixth grade, a retired schoolteacher took me under her wing. After some tutoring and testing, she informed my parents that the reason I was having trouble in school wasn’t that I was dumb but instead dyslexic. When my stepfather heard this, he decided to take me to a used bookstore with the belief that the best way to improve my reading skills was to read. Some of the books were hard to get through at first, but with his encouragement, I refused to give up. We made many trips to that bookstore, and I especially loved the science fiction and fantasy sections. Then one day, after complaining about the ending of a particular book, my stepfather told me that if I didn’t like the books that I had been reading, then to write one myself—so I did.

My first attempt resulted in a horribly written western when I was fourteen, staring a cocky gun-slinging cowboy by the name Curt Calhoun. Curt along with his seven brothers, who all shared C names in common, may never have seen the pages of a book, but that was the day I started writing, and never stopped.

#WOTR18 #AttendingAuthor – Author Spotlight on Mignon Mykel

Mignon Mykel

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Mignon Mykel, I’m a romance author who dabbles between new adult and contemporary, with big notes on FAMILY–whether by blood, friendship, or team. And by team, I mean hockey (well, others eventually, too). Fun fact: My Prescott Family series was realized during a March 2008 Peoria Rivermen game; I became a season ticket holder and national anthem singer the following season.

When and Why did you start to write?

Officially, April 2016 (first TRUE publication). Unofficially, I started back in the late 90s. I’ve always loved telling stories through written word (don’t ask me to tell you one in person though; I’m a bit ADD in my storytelling then).

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

Rachel Van Dyken, Cristin Harber, Paige Tyler

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

Honestly? The joy my readers have when I’m excited about my words flowing, or when I share words that I’m most excited about.

What are you working on now?

Currently, I have two pen name projects going, as well as 25: Angels and Assists (in the Enforcers of San Diego series) and Butterfly Save, the final Prescott Family story.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

Totaly pantser HOWEVER… I plot out points that my characters have already told me. I often dream up an entire book so I have an idea of where it’s going; I let my characters drive and mold the story, though, and sometimes those plot points they gave me months ago, are altered or, even completely taken out by the end of the book.

#WOTR18 #Review #Paranormal #Shifters – Refuge, (Stone’s Wolf Sanctuary #2) by Teresa Gabelman

Consumed with a need for revenge, Cole Jackson becomes blind to all he should hold dear. It’s not until vengeance has been carried out that he realizes what he’s almost lost.

After being brutally attacked, Leeza Snow, has kept her head up with her pride intact. What everyone doesn’t see is the shattered heart she conceals, not only from her pack but from the man she’s destined to be with.

While time can heal scars, it will take trust to offer a promise of a happy future.

I received this book from the authors for an honest review.

This book picks up right after the end of Sanctuary, Book 1.  The guys have gone after and killed Foster.  Leeza is a broken woman.  She is sad the pack is upset at her for not protecting a younger female of the family but wishes things were different.  When Gemma mentions her rape, Leeza goes ape shit.  Nope sorry people she was not raped, and this untrue fact is why she gets the sad eyes from her pack members.

Leeza is a feisty woman.  When she confronts the brothers, it was my favorite scene.  She makes sure to set them straight on what they as her pack elders have done wrong and how they have let her down plus the memory of her brother, the old pack alpha, down.

Cole feels like a class A Jerk for not listening to Leeza, his mate.  He feels like an idiot for only thinking of his pain at not protecting her and not her pain at being attacked.

The two have some issues to overcome like his over the top alpha behavior at bossing her around.  Leeza is a strong, independent female who wants a partner not a dictator to love.  Cole needs to learn that females have wants and desires besides being cared for on a pedestal.  She wants to be involved in the pack plus earn her way.

I liked the story.  There wasn’t much conflict in this story, but it is set up for the drama to come in the next book.  Looks like Foster’s issues may not be out of the pack’s picture juuuuuuust yet.

Teresa Gabelman is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the ‘Protectors Series’. When not writing about sexy alpha vampires and the women who drive them crazy she can be found on a lake with a fishing pole/Kindle, at a MMA event or spending a fun evening with family.

Being a full-time writer has allowed Teresa to connect more with readers which is what she loves most about writing. If you find the time she would love to hear from you!

Josiah Hallow carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. Literally. Between keeping his family safe as the head of the Hallows, training his six younger brothers for their individual turns in the MMA cage, and guarding his mother’s amulet from the creatures who want to use it to take control of the world, his sanity is about to break.

Mating with the pure Sarah Merit, an overly-religious school teacher whose body makes every fiber of Josiah’s being stand at attention, could finally push him over the edge. Unfortunately, despite the all-consuming sex that blazes between the pair, it isn’t enough to convince Sarah to live with him so he can protect her, as well.

When Josiah learns the secret Sarah is keeping from him, he makes a deal with the pair of vampires who run the MMA promotion the family fights for in an attempt to save her. But will he be able to save her again when Sarah is kidnapped and taken to Josiah’s grandfather, Atticus, the vicious alpha of a pack of werewolves in Maine? And what will Sarah do when she finds out the sexy corner of the Hallow Brothers is a werewolf, too?

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

My baby daddy and my book!!  YAY!!  I finally get my HEA.  Granted Tricia had to change my name in the book to protect the “innocent” but rest assured its totally my book!!

In Sam’s book we got a bit of a cross over into Joe’s book with Sarah.  We knew she was a teacher and a fighter.  We knew the guys loved seeing the oldest brother fall and fall hard just like they did.

Joe is crazy with a desire and want that he has no understanding of lately.  He is feeling a pang of jealousy when he sees his brothers and their mates. He doesn’t have time for all that mating nonsense since he was trusted to care for the family being the eldest.  However, the fates give you what you need when you least expect it.  When Sarah walks into his life at his aunt’s funeral, he is stunned stupid.

Sarah is good friends his with crazy, religious aunts.  She prays with them and knows all about the deviant nephews they have.  When she sees Joe, she realizes he has been the stars of her naughty dreams lately.  The two have a crazy chemistry in the sheets but seem to clash A LOT out of the sheets.

Sarah is a good girl where as Joe is a cussing angry man….errr….werewolf!  Yes, Joe needs to have a nut punch and yes, his brother serve him up with Karma.  The speech they give him, which was the speech he gave them about a mate, was PRICELESS!!

The couple have A LOT to figure out, but they are still fighting against the vampires AND the other werewolf pack from Maine.  There is a lot of stuff happening to move the story line forward, but the book FLEW.  I was stunned at how it all flows and how happy my heart was.  Joe was a tough nut to crack but once he finally opens, he is a fluffy wolf at my feet…errr…Sarah’s feet.

I received this book from the authors for an honest review.

I have looked at so many of this authors books but never seem to have the time in my schedule to read them.  Then when I got an ARC form for this book I jumped because it finally worked out.  Now I admit I saw a fireman on the cover ANNNND didn’t read the blurb so when I got the book and found out it has shifter…yup I was even more excited!!  Then to know the shifters are dragons….stop the press!!!                                                             I am allllllllll in!!

Derrick and Halee are so different but such a great match.  She accepts him for the broken man he is wile he accept her for the “Other” parts of her.

Derrick is the whole “ I am an island” type of guy.  He is a broken man because everyone he loves dies and leaves him.  SO he has decided to just be a player then no one gets hurt especially not him.  Halee is a rare full shifter dragon so her brother pushes her to marry another full-blooded shifter to produce more full-blooded shifters.  She is so over this and just runs away for a night of fun…no strings fun if you get my drift.  The two meet, scratch the itch and go home only to find out they will be working together on the same fire department…..oh snap!

Halee and Derrick have a lot to face and deal with.  She wants more, as does he, but he runs.  She tries to help him over come his demons but when Halee is put in danger he runs…typical man!!  Thankfully Derrick has help from his past to help him see that Halle is the one for him. Once he gets his head outta his butt, getting back is woman is the number one goal.

The story is a fun with the family dynamics of Halee and her siblings. The guys in the fire stations are a riot too.  I would love to see Chance and Hope????  Maybe??  But I really cannot wait for Gaelen to find love!!!

Award winning and bestselling author Valerie Twombly grew up watching Dark Shadows over her mother’s shoulder, and from there her love of the fanged creatures blossomed. Today, Valerie has decided to take her darker, sensual side and put it to paper.

When and Why did you start to write?

I’ve been writing since I was in preschool, since before I could put words together to make a story. I write because I don’t know what life without writing would be like. I write because I love sharing the stories in my head.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?I

I love Karen Marie Moning

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

I love the way writing evolves the longer I write. What I wrote five years ago is nothing like what I write now and I’m sure what I write five years from now will be totally different.

What are you working on now?

I am working on Bantamweight (Hallow Brothers Series #5), Compromised (the final book of the Black Irish Series) and a paranormal/Greek god romance

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

#WOTR2018AttendingAuthor #Review #Shifter Refuge (Stone’s Wolf Sanctuary Book 2) by Teresa Gabelman

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader’s Copy of this book
This is book two of the Stone’s Wolf Sanctuary and it picks up directly where book one ended, however this book is all about Alpha Eric Jackson’s brother Cole.
Leeza Snow is a wolf in Eric’s pack, one who no one has really talked to since another wolf was raped and she was hurt trying to protect her. She feels everyone has stopped talking to her because she failed to protect the younger girl, what she doesn’t realize is that the pack believes she was raped also.
This pack while strong and killed the bad guy, has really done a disservice to Leeza and the young wolf who has left the pack by ignoring them.
Cole is furious because he wasn’t the one to kill the man who hurt Leeza, who btw is his mate and neither have acted on it, and doesn’t really know how to talk to Leeza so he has been avoiding her along with the rest of the pack.
Ok, first off Leeza is a strong woman. Her first thought when she saw what was happening to the younger woman wasn’t about herself but how to protect her, which got her hurt. She knew the other girl needed her afterward and with no regards for herself again stayed with the girl even though she needed to shift to heal herself.
When she realizes what the others believe of her she goes off on the Alpha and the pack, one for not asking what really happened that night and two for the way that the pack treated to woman who had something horrific happen to them.
I love when Cole realizes just how much he screwed up with Leeza. Men are such stupid creatures it makes me wonder why I love them sometimes, then I remember that they kill really big bugs for me sooooo…….
Even after learning the truth and mating he still screws up with her by trying to tell her who she can work for, but she shuts that down quickly and he learns that Leeza is not a mate that will blindly do as she’s told and follow, she’s a mate that will stand beside her man and be a partner.
Refuge show us that you don’t know what really happened with something unless you ask all parties involved, not every Alpha does everything right and can learn from others in his pack, and women are strong as heck and so don’t mess with us.

#WOTR18 #AuthorSpotlight – Attending Author Sarah Grimm @SarahGrimmAuthr

Sarah Grimm

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Sarah Grimm and I write contemporary romance. I live in southwest Michigan, along the shores of Lake Michigan with my husband of 25 years, two sons and three pups. I love reading romance. But, I love writing romance even more—bringing two people together, even if it is only in my imagination. I love the stuttered heartbeats when the hero and heroine first meet—that first glance. I love the gut punch of sexual awareness, the sweetness of that first kiss, and the momentary panic over the realization they’ve fallen in love. Most of all, I love the idea how even at the worst of times, at those moments when they least expect it, two people can find love.

When and Why did you start to write?

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I have notebooks filled with poems, story ideas, and partial chapters from as far back as age five. But I didn’t write more than bits and pieces of stories until my youngest son was born. He was healthy at birth, colicky, irritable even, but healthy—until he turned six weeks old and began showing symptoms of croup. I can’t tell you how many times we rushed to the hospital with a child who was turning blue, only to be told by the doctors that they didn’t know what was wrong with him. Most of them thought I was just a young, overreacting mother (I even got the condescending pat on the head from a few), but one believed there was something more going on than croup.
That man saved my child’s life. He found a birthmark in my son’s throat that obstructed eighty percent of his airway. By the time we were done, my baby had endured stomach surgery, throat surgery, and a tracheotomy with all the special care that entails. As you can imagine, all the hospital time left me desperate for a distraction, so I took pen to paper — yup, longhand — and wrote my first romance. Not just bits and pieces of a book, but the entire hero and heroine’s journey from ‘Chapter One’ to ‘The End’.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

]HelenKay Dimon, Tess Gerritsen, Kay Hooper, & Amy Lillard

What are you working on now?

A novella titled Sweet Distraction. Here’s the blurb:

He’s supposed to protect her body, not ravish it.

After injury forces him to leave his military career behind, Cole Sweet finds himself adrift, struggling against hellish memories and loss of identity. When his childhood friend, agent to rock goddess Jessie Ford, offers him a job as her bodyguard, Cole is hesitant to accept. What does he know about the glitzy world of rock and roll? He’s a warrior, not a glorified babysitter to some spoiled princess. Except Jessie is nothing like Cole imagined. Her lush curves and vivacious personality captivate him, tempting him in ways he finds impossible to resist.

Jessie Ford is at the top of her career. Her image graces the cover of Overdrive, the world’s biggest rock magazine, and her new single has debuted atop the charts, putting her on track to becoming the most downloaded female artist of the year. She has one clear objective, and nothing will stand in the way of her goal. Especially not an ex-Marine with a chip on his shoulder. Even if he does bring new meaning to the word distraction.
