<\/strong><\/p>\nRyan Cruz is having a bad day. Wait, make that a bad year. Broke, technically homeless, and living on a friend’s couch, she’s now also unemployed after her sharp tongue gets her fired from her job. So when a handsome stranger approaches her out of the blue with a proposition–he\u2019ll pay her to be his date to his brother\u2019s wedding for the weekend–accepting his offer is a no brainer. She needs the cash and figures it wouldn’t be in the best interest of a professional athlete to murder her.<\/p>\n What starts as a simple business arrangement soon becomes more as these opposites attract and get caught up in the wedding magic. Her ears were too busy ringing with the force she was exerting to hold back her tears.<\/p>\n She\u2019d made it to the driveway before she heard Ben call her name. She ignored him as she made her way to the rental car.<\/p>\n He caught up to her right as she reached it. \u201cRyan,\u201d he breathed.<\/p>\n She turned toward him and held out her hand. \u201cKeys.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat?\u201d he asked, looking flustered.<\/p>\n \u201cGive me the keys, Ben.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNo, let me . . . let me take you back. We can talk and\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI have nothing to say to you. And I\u2019m sure as hell not getting in a car with you.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cRyan, please let me explain.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou have. I got the message pretty clearly inside. Seems like everyone else did too. It was quite a show.\u201d<\/p>\n Ben ran a hand over his head. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to say that. It just came out. I was angry, and\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cJesus Christ, Ben! Stop. You\u2019re not an eighteen-year-old kid anymore. You can\u2019t use your anger as an excuse for saying shitty things. Besides, it\u2019s not like you didn\u2019t say anything that wasn\u2019t true.\u201d Ryan shrugged. \u201cThey know the truth about me, and I know where I stand with you. It was for the best.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s not . . . that\u2019s not where you stand with me. You\u2019re more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n Ryan laughed humorlessly. \u201cNo, I\u2019m not. I\u2019m not even that actually. All I am is an out-of-work waitress who was desperate enough to let some guy think she was an escort.\u201d<\/p>\n The startled look on Ben\u2019s face would\u2019ve been comical if it wasn\u2019t for the fact that Ryan was pretty sure she\u2019d never laugh for real ever again. \u201cWait, you\u2019re not an escort?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I mean, I guess I am now. Thanks for that resume builder, by the way. But before I met you? No. I was just some girl trying to figure out how she was going to make ends meet after I quit waitressing at a crappy strip club. And then you barged into my life and offered me a better alternative. So I took it.\u201d Ryan had managed to keep her emotions in check, but time was running out on that. \u201cBut now it\u2019s over. So give me the keys.\u201d<\/p>\n After a moment\u2019s hesitation, Ben pulled the keys out of his pocket, but he toyed with them instead of handing them over. \u201cI don\u2019t want it to be over,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, it really doesn\u2019t matter what you want. There\u2019s no coming back from that. We both know it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n She sighed. \u201cThen I guess you never really knew me at all.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n They live with their husbands and kids in a Philadelphia suburb.
