I’ve known Savanna for over a decade. We only get to see each other one weekend a year at Writers On The River but it never fails to be an amazing time. Savannah Verte. I am a multi-genre author sharing the stories of my heart and head for about the last 15 or so years. I’m a wife, mom to 2 amazing daughters, and Gigi to 2 granddaughters. I work full time in another industry and am celebrating 25 years with my company this fall. What started as a hobby, has turned into my escape and extended family.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

written – lords, who knows. published – 27. Favorite is hard. I think there are those I like better than others, and then there are the ones I feel like given the time I’d like to fix the things that I know better now than when I wrote them, but that’s part of the growing process so maybe not. It just makes it harder to look back. Until I retire, there aren’t enough hours to do all the things, so I’m trying to keep my eyes on the horizon instead of the sunset.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

🏳‍🌈Do you write one book and finish it completely before starting the next? If not, how do you keep yourself from confusing the projects?<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It depends on the book. Portals, which is almost 800 pages long, needed pauses to keep myself from being exhausted by the characters and the long arcs. I wrote multiple shorter stories while that was in the works. The same is true now of the sequel to that. It will be shorter than Portals, but at the same time, equally dense because of the number of characters and arcs being coordinated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

LOL! I honestly have no idea. I write inside of a formatting program so that I can skip the heartburn phase of formatting. Mostly because I am HORRIBLE at formatting and get severely stressed trying to do it right once I have the story written. Working inside the formatting program also saves me from dissecting the line breaks and trying to make the words fit the page instead of just telling the story. It’s sanity over all other considerations. \ud83d\ude42<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

🏳‍🌈How do you ensure your LGBTQ characters feel authentic and mutifaceted, rather than just serve a plot function?<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I am reading this question and physically clenching my teeth. YUCK! LGBTQ or otherwise – I cannot fathom the idea of writing a character in to fit a plot function. Main characters all get fleshed the same way and I need to hear them in my head as I’m working, or they aren’t right. Secondary characters may not have the same level of detail, but I generally still know if they are going to laugh, cry, eat meat, stand a picket line, or yell obscenities at bad actors. And I always know what the characters favorite ice cream flavor is. It’s integral to knowing if they are one of the good guys or not.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I like to think that I was pro-be who you are before there was an acronym and the doors came off the proverbial closets. I’ve never quite understood the jump to hate mentality, regardless of the target.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I’m pulling books off the shelf to see what’s in them here… There is 1\/2 of a heart tag from a beanie baby, there’s a backer\/label from a panty liner, there’s torn scraps of paper, ribbons, receipts, and a JC Penny clothing tag for something that I got on pink tag clearance for 2.99.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Generally, no. I usually write in total silence, going so far in deep scene work to wear gun block headphones, where I actually hear is my breathing. I do character profiles usually with Jazz on, or Opera so I can think through the person and visualize them in the same room\/scenario and wonder if they would like the music? Are they bored? Are they looking at the door? Am I annoying them making them listen? What would they tell me? How loudly would they speak to talk over the music as I try to get a sense of who they are?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

🏳‍🌈What is a super specific detail you know about one of your characters that has no relevance to the story?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

LOL!! This question tickles me. I’ve been working on character development lately for a few upcoming books. A detail that I doubt will ever be story relevant is a female that I have that bakes 1\/2 of the cookie dough for herself before she adds the chocolate chips and then gives all of those cookies away because she can’t bring herself to make chocolate chip cookies without chocolate chips all for herself. It’s part of her OCD to follow the recipe. Another detail I know about a character is they wear their hair up because it tickles their face when the wind blows and they are self-conscious about laughing and having people look at them.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
