#Review – Hope Everlasting (The Variant Saga #3) by J.N. Chaney

Hope Everlasting

Journey down the road to Everlasting.

Terry is on the run, having escaped from prison and killed its overseer. He and his friend Ludo need to find a way to get to the northern border. That’s where Ludo’s wife is being held, but time is of the essence. If they don’t hurry, she’ll be sacrificed to the gods as part of some barbaric ceremony. With an army at their heels and a continent to cross, Terry and Ludo will need all the help they can get.

Meanwhile, Mei Curie has opened a portal to another world…and it isn’t what she expected. There are worms the size of cars, animals with bulletproof hides, and an advanced alien race unlike anything mankind has ever witnessed.

Not to worry, though. Johnathan Finn has just the ticket: a rifle stocked with bullets, ready to deal with whatever threats come knocking. Along with his team of soldiers, John is here for a single purpose–to find his missing friend and bring him home–but in a world as strange as this one, a simple search and rescue mission could prove deadly.

Goodreads

Oh my gods! The story just keeps getting better and better. Each installment in this series is different from the other one. The world building expands in the greatest way and each new character is full of surprises. All the characters add something unique to the story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. And best of all…who can you trust? Loyalty and trust are huge in this story. Everyone is in search of the truth and an impending war is upon us. Our characters from Earth are right in the middle of the mess. Everlasting is a city full of technology and power. This city cannot breath the Variant air. All of the other natives to Kant are more primitive and with many different religious beliefs. When all of this clashes things really get out of hand. It’s a very emotional book that just does not stop. There is the perfect combination of emotion and action to make this an incredible addition to this series. Sending kudos to the author on this one! Well done!

#DoubleReview #NewRelease – Bad Wolf: A Paranormal Science Fiction Thriller (Olento Research #4) by Sarah Noffke

Bad Wolf: A Paranormal Science Fiction Thriller (Olento Research #4)

One man will kill to get back what belongs to him, even if he destroys himself in the process.

Mika Lenna, the CEO of Olento Research, won’t be deterred. Yes, the Lucidites have the upper hand, but he has something better. The one thing that can really stop them. The potential to create the rivalry to any werewolf. Mika has crossed the final threshold of humanity to do something that no human would dare do. But if it pays off, then for him, it will all be worth it.

The pack is stronger than ever, but still missing so many members. Still, they find a way to band together to create a cohesion they didn’t know in their past lives, the ones before becoming werewolves.

Meanwhile, the Lucidites are quickly making progress with a solution that might help the men assimilate with the wolf. However, will it come at a cost? The men have become accustomed to the wolf, and losing it may feel like leaving behind a part of themselves.
And finally, Adelaide has realized that her father’s death made her lose a part of herself. She dives deep to find a way to recover it, but will she surface, or much like her father, will she be lost forever?

In the final installment of the Olento Research series, the wolves must defend and those around them must decide if they’re willing to battle along beside them. The final fight won’t be nice or fair, especially when there’s so much at stake. Each wolf is hungry for victory, but will their maker be their death?

Goodreads

I absolutely love this series! I feel like I know these characters. They are a part of me, my tribe, lol! Adelaide is one of my most favorite characters ever. And combined with Rox (our resident hooker FBI agent), Zephyr’s pack of werewolves, and one of the nastiest supervillains makes for an intense read. All of the characters are trying to find their true self. They are tirelessly working on bringing the rest of the pack in when things take a turn for the worse. People are being tortured and are dying from Mika’s experiments. This has to be stopped and this crew is working on the solution. I feel the story is about overcoming self doubt, taking opportunities, and accepting second chances. Bad Wolf is nothing short of a page turner. There is never a dull moment within these pages. It’s action packed but with the sentimental touches that make this story absolutely special. The Olento Research series takes you on an extraordinary journey. I hope to see more of these characters in the future. Especially a certain couple. This is a must read!

**On a side note, I need to thank Sarah Noffke for giving us just a little more of Ren. Absolutely perfect. Sarah, thank you!**

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Sarah has once again written a great series.  This is the final book in the Olento Series and I have to say it is my favorite series this far.  Really how could it not be my favorite it has werewolves, lucidities, and a little essence of Ren.

I was on the edge of my seat flipping the pages needing to know if Adelaide and Zephyer were going to get all the wolves back or if Mika was going to end up with them all. As always Sarah comes up with the best evil villains and Mika was like no other. He was killing and torturing people in the name of getting what he wanted at whatever the cost.

To watch the relationships of the wolves, Adelaide and Rox was amazing. To see how the wolves have grown and started working better with one another to see the strengths and weakness of each one, yes even Zephyer has weaknesses. Watching Adelaide gain confidents and learn how to cope with things was heartwarming. I have to say my heart was breaking to watch what Rox had to endure.

I hope we are able to see the wolves, Rox and Adelaide again. As this one comes to a close I am excited to see what Sarah has instore for us next. I have a feeling it will be just as good as the others she has given us.

A few of my favorites:

How does she do that? Pretend so well? Everyone thought she was so hard, but nothing could be further from the truth. This was a girl who just wanted to be loved. To feel deserving of that love. And if anyone ever told her how incredibly brilliant and beautiful she was, inside and out, then she’d feel a lot different about herself.

You’re an extension of Ren. You say his lines as if they were your own. You follow his practices, since they are exemplary. And you’ve inherited his snarky nature. However, isn’t the real concern you have with the group the fact you don’t want them thinking you’re an imposter? Now that they know about him, they’ll know you’re impersonating. The power you pretend to wield is his. Isn’t the issue that you can’t let him go as long as you refuse to be yourself rather than him? Who is Adelaide Lewis? She is the daughter of Ren, but she isn’t him. Have you asked yourself how you’d act if you weren’t trying to keep him alive inside yourself?”

he respected these two women, whom he’d been reluctantly thrown to. They were stronger than most people he knew, but had a flippant style that he’d come to appreciate.

he’s found a way to communicate from wherever he is, so I don’t think you’ve seen the last of your father yet. If I know him, he’ll be watching over you for the rest of his existence.”

#Review – #NewRelease – Paper Tigers (Fear University, Book 4) by Meg Collett

Paper Tigers (Fear University, Book 4)

Fear University has created a new monster …

The infamous fear switch research started with me, Patient Zero. But I am a failure. My mind adapted and now I move through the shadows like the creatures I was created to hunt. I spent my entire life in a cage with scalpels in my brain, but I am finally free—thanks to the Commander.

I am Zero, and I will make the bad men at Fear University pay.

I, Ollie Volkova, have returned to Fear University to rebuild and restore the school to its former standard of protecting the world against monsters, both human and aswang. But something new is killing Original families all over Kodiak Island and nearly assassinated the president of my university. The hunters call it a ghost, but I know she’s something more. Something worse than monsters and men. Something like me.

Fear University is my home, and I will kill to protect it.

Goodreads

It’s truly an intense story and this series has made it to one of my all time favorites. It’s an action packed thriller with some craziness on the side. More please! This series goes along with some Filipino folklore that I never knew existed. This author has brought Aswangs to life in this series along with some new monsters that we love to hate. Ollie is our lead female, she is a strong warrior halfling (half human and half aswang) that has come back with a vengeance. She has come back to bring Fear University to its former glory but is then put on hold due to some gruesome deaths. There is a “ghost” that lives in the shadows, going on killing sprees and has Fear University in it’s sights. Turns out that this ghost is actually the first “successful” experiment with the fear switch. But Zero adapted and now is on Fear University’s radar. There is so much more going on behind this part of the story. Sunny is working on an antidote for the aswang saliva, Hatter is still manic, and Luke is still in love with Ollie. People are scared. Some are running and some are fighting. Saviors or fighters? The group has been put in some crazy situations, desperate times call for desperate measures. They are all holding on to themselves while discovering who they really are. And lets not forget their families….some make a reappearance in this story. Some heartfelt and some heart wrenching. I can’t wait for more! Meg Collett did it again!

#Review #WOTR – Call of the Raven (The Union) by Shawn Reilly

17661306

Love is something everyone longs for at the deepest level—but for some, love is a curse. This is most certainly true for Asher Lake, the Keeper of an unknown group of people called ani-shifts. Ani-shifts, those with the ability to shift into animal forms, compose a secretive body of individuals known simply as the Union.
A wolf in shifter form, Asher lives with a curse placed upon him and his predecessors by the elusive Raven—a dark entity whose identity remains a mystery. According to the ancient archives, the Raven’s curse is conditional and set in motion by one fatal decision: if a Keeper ever allows himself to fall in love, he will die.
Choosing to live in isolation within the walls of Lake Manor, a private estate concealed by the dense woods of Brokenridge, Asher has vowed never to love or to fall in love with anyone believing it to be the only way to survive the curse. However, after ten years of neglecting his people and the protégés left in his care, along with the impending threats of an uprising, Asher learns the only way to break the Raven’s curse on future Keepers, thereby preventing them from suffering the same fate, is to accept his.
This becomes Asher’s biggest challenge of all when he encounters Elle Ison, the woman of his dreams. Does Elle hold the key? Can she help Asher change his fate?

Goodreads

Don’t resist. Fate is fate and things are meant to be. Or so they say…..

First, I must say that paranormal is one of my favorite genres. I love shifter books but sometimes things get a little redundant when they are all similar. Call of the Raven is so much more. There is a lot of world building and the author does a fantastic job. And some of the characters, well, they are a little intense but soooo relateable. Definitely not your normal shifter story.

Asher is the Keeper and is destined to die an early death once he falls in love. Grant is his predecessor and tried to set things in motion to break the curse. To try and avoid this fate Asher has closed himself off and vowed not to love or fall in love. With this he has neglected his family and society. 10 long years have passed and secrets are unfolding. Asher and his group of proteges are trying to find Grant’s daughter (that no one knew about) and Asher finds the woman who he has only seen in his dreams.

Things then get real sticky and the angle is not clear on who and what is really happening. The story keeps you guessing, constantly trying to figure it out. You will be as confused as the characters (in the best way possible) as you feel like you are right in the middle of the story. The hierarchy of the shifters and their society is completely different than what I have read in the past. This is truly a great start to what I expect to be a great series. I am looking forward to the 2nd book and more from this author!

When it seemed like I was only an F away from flunking out of the sixth grade, a retired school teacher took me under her wing. After some tutoring and testing, she informed my parents that the reason I was having trouble in school wasn’t because I was dumb but instead dyslexic.
When my stepfather heard this, he decided to take me to a used bookstore with the belief that the best way to improve my reading skills was to read. Some of the books were hard to get through at first, but with his encouragement I refused to give up. We made many trips to that bookstore, and I especially loved the science fiction and fantasy sections.
Then one day, after complaining about the ending of a particular book, he told me that if I didn’t like the books that I had been reading, then to write one myself—so I did. My first attempt resulted in a horribly written western when I was fourteen, staring a cocky gun slinging cowboy by the name Curt Calhoun. Curt along with his seven brothers, who all shared C names in common, may never have seen the pages of a book, but that was the day I started writing, and never stopped.
I have over fifty books on my computer which I’ve written in various genres, all of which are waiting to come to life. Even though my ability to write has improved over the years, I am humble enough to admit that I cannot venture on this journey alone

#Review #NewRelease- Alpha Wolf (Olento Research Series #1) by: Sarah Noffke

34499615

Olento Research wants to control the world. The Lucidite Institute wants to save it.

Twelve men went missing.

Six months later they awake from drug-induced stupors to find themselves locked in a lab.

And on the night of a new moon, eleven of those men, possessed by new–and inhuman–powers, break out of their prison and race through the streets of Los Angeles until they disappear one by one into the night.

Olento Research wants its experiments back. Its CEO, Mika Lenna, will tear every city apart until he has his werewolves imprisoned once again. He didn’t undertake a huge risk just to lose his would-be assassins.

However, the Lucidite Institute’s main mission is to save the world from injustices. Now, it’s Adelaide’s job to find these mutated men and protect them and society, and fast. Already around the nation, wolflike men are being spotted. Attacks on innocent women are happening. And then, Adelaide realizes what her next step must be: She has to find the alpha wolf first. Only once she’s located him can she stop whoever is behind this experiment to create wild beasts out of human beings.

Goodreads

Ok, where do I even start? Should I mention that you don’t even need to read my review (you can if you want of course, lol) but you should stop and read Alpha Wolf, like, now! If this is your first Sarah Noffke book or you are an avid reader of hers, you won’t be disappointed….at all! The characters are well developed and fun to follow. The world building is intense enough to put you right in the middle of the story. This is the start of a new series but if you have read Sarah’s other books you will see other characters pop up. This is sooooo exciting!

Olento research has figured out how to make werewolves after kidnapping 12 unsuspecting men. They are able to escape and this is where the Lucidites come in to play. Olento Research’s goal is to make these men into assassins and the Lucidites are trying to save them along with all of humanity. Sarah Noffke writes a great bad guy (oxymoron?) and you will quickly learn to love to hate him. Adelaide is the agent that has been assigned this case by the Lucidites to try and solve. This is where we have a little fun. Adelaide is the daughter of the greatest, er, um, worst, British bloke the Lucidites have ever employed. (if you don’t know who Ren is, you should try her other series) She is definitely her father’s daughter. She has been given a partner who she thoroughly loathes. Seeing these two banter back and forth keeps things light with all the heavy that is going on. As they start to unravel the web that Mika Lenna has weaved with his werewolf research the Lucidites begin to find some truths. But we all know with the truth there come more questions.

As the plot thickens there are more twists and turns and rollercoaster rides full of wonder. There are more characters that are introduced and they all play an integral part in the plot. This is a great twist on the werewolf society we have all come to know with some dream travelers as well. Truly an amazing start to a spin off series. Reader beware…there is a cliffhanger. Sarah Noffke knows how to write those as well! Bring on the sequel!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the first book in a new series. If you have ever read one of Sarah’s books you know she likes to pull characters from other series.  This is no different.  You will see some from Lucidites and Ren’s series.  I love getting to see past characters.  But don’t worry if you have not read any of Sarah’s series before you will be able to jump in.

What would you do if you were a perfectly normal person who woke up one day and found you were taken, held up in a cell, and would turn in to an awful monster every 7 days? Well that is where 12 unsuspecting men ended up.  After escaping a few learned that they were not only Werewolves but also Dream Travelers and found out about the Lucidite Institute.

You see Olento Research is on a mission to create the most powerful fighting machine and now that their experiments escaped they are on a mission to recover them all. However, some are in the custody of the Lucidites and it is Adelaide’s job to find all 12 men and protect them from being recaptured by Olento Research.

Let me talk about some of the characters in this book first and foremost there is Adelaide she is her father’s daughter no doubt (if you have not read REN series please do so). I love her just as much as I did her father. She will say what she wants when she wants and will not hold back.  Oh and don’t ever think she will remember or call you by your real name she was constantly getting names wrong (no matter if on purpose or not). There is Rox the FBI agent assigned as Adelaide’s partner and yes this goes over just peachy keen with Adelaide….NOT!! Rox is a flirtatious spitfire and keeps Adelaide on her toes or at least makes her come up with great sayings.  We are also introduced to a few of the wolfs, Zephyr, Connor, and Kaleb.  Zephyr is the alpha wolf and the one Adalaide and Rox set out to find first. Connor was the one left behind and was a drug addict which probably worked out in his and the Lucidites favor. Then there was Kaleb the runt of the pack.  This brings me to the villain of the story and wow Sarah has a way of making them worse with each story.

I was so wrapped up in this story I did not want it to end I needed to know more and what happened to the other 9 men. Sarah has a way of keeping me guessing with each twist of the story just when I thought I knew what’s going to happen it would go in a different direction and I was like no WAY! We are in for one crazy adventure and I am ready.

#Review – Secrets of the Tally by Halie Fewkes

26416390

Meet Allie: she’s just woken up in an empty forest with blood on her hands and everything she’s ever known wiped from her mind. In her survival-oriented world, people are hunted by vicious predators and it quickly becomes clear that they are specifically hunting her.
Allie’s friends and sister have no insight as to why she’s a target, and her only clue is a list of tally marks she finds tucked away, detailing how many lives she’s saved and how many deaths she’s caused. Judging by the amount of ink slashed across the page and the fact that nobody seems to know about it, Allie knows she used to have secrets that need to be recovered.
Without knowing whom to trust, she finds herself drawn to a new stranger in the caves they call home, and even though he won’t talk about his own past, he’s ready to help Allie recover hers.
The problem now is that Allie’s instinct to survive is the only thing strong enough to bring her memories back. Flashes of her old self will only surface to save her from life threatening danger, so if she wants to avoid living as an echo of her former self, danger is what she must seek.

Goodreads

Secrets of the mind! That is exactly how Secrets of the Tally is. I love these characters and the setting is perfect. Right at the beginning you are brought into this fantastical world that Allie cannot remember. She has lost her memory. She is now learning all about her new world and the monsters that haunt them. Allie has found that she has all the instinct she needs but it seems to only come out when she is put in a dangerous situation. She finds a couple clues and finds her friends and sister. They are all trying to help her remember. She just wants to remember. She then finds that she is a target by the Escalis (the monsters….) and keeps finding new truths and new lies. This is a fantastical tale of wizards, dragons, monsters and battles. Who comes out on top? Whose side is she really on? Who is she really? These are all things that will keep you guessing on this wild ride of epic proportions. It kept me on my toes the entire story. The characters are all very likable and the world building is excellent. I cannot wait to see what comes next for our heroine, Allie. I am extremely lucky to have found Halie Fewkes, she is a great author and did what the great ones do, keeps you wanting more!

#Review #NewRelease – Lux and Lies (Whitebird Chronicles, #1) by Meg Collett

Lux and Lies (Whitebird Chronicles, #1)

Mr. Robot meets UnReal in a story of celebrities and anarchists, reality shows and evil corporations, romance and self-discovery.

Nineteen-year-old Wren Iver is nothing more than a dying girl with cancer, but when megastar Sloan Lux dies right before filming starts on the year’s most anticipated reality show, producers scramble to secretly replace her—with Wren. She’s swept into Hollywood and promised a cure by VidaCorp, the nation’s richest pharmaceutical company, for simply replacing Lux. It’s a deal Wren can’t refuse.

The decision could get her killed, because she isn’t the only cast member with ulterior motives.

The Whitebirds, a social anarchist group, has infiltrated the show, and they’ll stop at nothing to use Sloane Lux’s fame to derail VidaCorp’s efforts to legalize their controversial, life-changing drug—a drug that might kill more people than it saves. Caught in the middle of a game between a powerful corporation and ruthless anarchist group, Wren will do anything to survive.

Will Wren secure the drug she needs to survive, or will she become another casualty in the anarchists’ fight against VidaCorp?

Goodreads

I was sucked in right from the beginning. This is a futuristic type thriller with twists in the story that will keep you guessing what is going to happen. Nothing about what is going on in the story is normal, in the best possible way. Wren is sick with lung cancer and is dying with no cure in sight. She rolls with all the other poverty stricken people in her area when all of sudden the tides change. She is given the opportunity of a lifetime….to survive. VidaCorp is going to cure her and all she has to do is replace Sloane Lux. Sounds easy, right? Lux is the biggest star of her lifetime. She is placed into the unreal world of Hollywood where everyone is watching you. She is training to be Lux and is brought into this crazy, intense world. She is given the enormous task of not only being Lux, but also is trying to find out who the insider is with the Whitebirds (a gang that has been after VidaCorp) as they have infiltrated this world. After many lies have been thrown around in this intricately carved society, there are also many truths that come forward. Some of these truths are absolutely unthinkable and the lies that have been strung throughout them are super intense. All throughout the story I kept thinking “this is the best twist” but then there is another turn. It’s like playing CLUE. Constantly trying to figure out who did it and how. I never saw the ending coming. Which in my eyes is one of the most important things about a story. Constantly kept me on the edge of my seat guessing. Cannot wait to see what happens with our girl, Wren!

She is a captive of the Queen of the Damned.

Goodreads

What a unique spin on the Bloody Mary stories. This is a YA novel that can be read as a standalone but is part of a series. Landon is 17 and grew up watching this mesmerizing girl in the mirror…that no one else can see. Elizabeth is said girl in the mirror. She held captive in the Isle of the Damned by Bloody Mary. She can feel Landon and his strength. She has been held captive for so long everything tends to run together. Things start to go awry and the Isle of the Damned and Earth are in trouble. Landon is called on for an important mission and Elizabeth finds her true strength and calling. This is truly a twisted tale that is the emotional rollercoaster you come to expect with teenagers. However, there are twists to this ghost story that you won’t see coming and these will keep you on the edge of your seat to the very end. This story touches on depression and how they overcome these obstacles. The characters and world building are great. You won’t go wrong with this story. I was not aware at the beginning that this is a novella for the Skeleton Key series but am looking forward to reading more!

However, it doesn’t mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit? www.sarahjpepper.com

#Review – Monster Mine, Fear University #3 by Meg Collett

I, Sunny Lyons, am chasing my best friend’s ghost.

Or at least I thought I was until Ollie calls me on the phone and tells me to come to Anchorage, Alaska. We find her in a renovated warehouse surrounded by halflings and Hex, her father and the greatest aswang warrior who has ever lived.

While trying to protect Ollie from the people who want to use her as a weapon, I stumble across a secret the halflings will kill to protect—a secret that could save the man I love. I may be the Cowardly Lyon, but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to protect my friends—even if it kills me.

My name is Ollie Volkova, and I am not broken.

Though my friends may say otherwise after I spent three weeks with a sadistic madman. They think I’m crazy, but when a monster called the Manananggal surfaces on the outskirts of Anchorage, my father offers to tell me about my mother in exchange for my help in hunting down the winged creature. It’s a deal I can’t pass up. Not when my mother’s past is so important to my future.

But the more I learn about her, the more I discover about my monster’s soul, and when my father reveals the final, darkest truth, the decision I make will change the course of my life.

Truths and lies, twists and turns…Fate. Ollie was kidnapped and tortured. Her friends are on a never ending hunt to find her, to help her. Turns out that Ollie has reunited with her father who she learns isn’t all the monster that everyone believes him to be, at least that is what she is trying to figure out. She learns so much about her mom and how her parents came to be, why her mother left, and why her father keeps fighting. Sunny is with Luke and Hatter looking for Ollie. Ollie reaches out to them and they come to the sanctuary that Ollie is at.

So many demons…Luke is dealing with the truth about Ollie being a halfling, Hatter is dealing with his manic episodes, Sunny is dealing with trying to protect everyone, and Ollie is putting her pieces back together.

The story goes back and forth between Ollie’s and Sunny’s POV. You are totally immersed in this story. Ollie is struggling with deciding where she belongs. With her father, Hex, and the halflings or if she needs to go back to Fear University. The lesser evil, right? They are all faced with major decisions, they fight with themselves and their demons to do what is right.

The story is jam packed with…with everything. Action, love, and all around badassery. There are so many warring emotions that you can’t help but to feel like you are right in the middle.

The Fear University series is one of my favorites and the author did not disappoint with Monster Mine!
