#Review #Audiobook – Whisper in the Wind (The Fetch Phillips Novels) Book 4 by Luke Arnold

The fourth installment of Luke Arnold’s Fetch Phillips series, Whisper in the Wind, takes readers to a very different Sunder City. One where government corruption is rampant and tensions are rising.

Fetch is done being a hero. Once a detective, all he wants now is to run his cafe in peace. Sunder City is still recovering from the sudden and violent end of magic, and if one man can’t solve all its problems, he can at least stop some people going hungry. But when a kid on the run shelters in Fetch’s cafe, and a chain of gruesome murders begins among Sunder’s high and mighty, trouble is brought to Fetch’s door.

There’s a word whispered on the wind, and that word is revolution…

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

The Fetch Phillips Novels have become one of my top favorite series ever! For me, by the time an author reaches the 4th book and beyond, I start to lose interest because what more can you really do with a story? Things start to repeat or things get really far fetched and aren’t enjoyable anymore. That is the furthest thing for this series. I am as hooked to Whisper in the Wind as I was to the first book as I was to the second and third. I also continue to recommend listening to the audio as opposed to reading it. Mr. Arnold does an incredible job with Fetch!

I wasn’t really sure how this was going to pan out because Fetch is more or less trying to “give up” by staying low and just focusing on him and working Georgio’s café. He is controlling what he can control, himself and serving good coffee and food. However, Fetch can’t help it when he sees some teens in trouble because he sees himself. He puts his neck out on the line for them but then ends up being a sort of safe haven for the misfits. But hey, it gives him some purpose. While all this is happening, there is a radical that has been spewing things via propaganda and Fetch finds himself being pulled in all sorts of directions and working for everyone he swore off. I love all the new characters and all the crazy twists and turns. Just when Fetch found his place and realized what he was supposed to do, something changes and he is put on a completely different course. The ending left me with my mouth gaping open. I am anxiously waiting for book 5. Well done, Mr. Arnold, you have my full attention!

#Review #Audiobook – One Foot in the Fade (The Fetch Phillips Novels Book 3) by Luke Arnold

Welcome back to the streets of Sunder City, a darkly imagined world perfect for readers of Ben Aaronovitch and Jim Butcher.

In a city that lost its magic, an angel falls in a downtown street. His wings are feathered, whole—undeniably magical—the man clearly flew, because he left one hell of a mess when he plummeted into the sidewalk.

But what sent him up? What brought him down? And will the answers help Fetch bring the magic back for good?

Working alongside necromancers, genies, and shadowy secret societies, through the wildest forests and dingiest dive bars, this case will leave its mark on Fetch’s body, his soul, and the fate of the world.

Praise for the Fetch Phillips novels:

“Superb… With a lead who would be at home in the pages of a Raymond Chandler or James Ellory novel and a nicely twisty plot, this installment makes a strong case for Arnold’s series to enjoy a long run.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Arnold’s universe has everything, including the angst of being human. The perfect story for adult fantasy fans—a tough PI and a murder mystery wrapped around the mysticism of Hogwarts, sprinkled with faerie dust.” ―Library Journal (starred review)

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I cannot recommend this series/book enough. And if you do pick it up, I recommend it even more to listen to it via audiobook. My personal opinion is that the audio really puts the cherry on top. Fetch is not a super complicated character; he is just trying to find his place. He has for so long believed that the magic disappearing is his fault and has been holding this weight on his shoulders alone, but there have been sparks of the possibility that there may actually be some magic out there.

Fetch is put on a new “case.” This gives us quite a few new characters and a few that we get to see a deeper side of. True to past books, we get Fetch’s same dry humor and him constantly battling himself. But this book…this book really gave me some feels. Fetch and the others were put in some difficult situations that were difficult for me to process, let alone the characters. I mean, I felt like they were REAL. These characters have become a part of me. Earlier I said that I recommend listening to this if you have the chance, I really do because there are parts where the emotion is so intense that I was literally breathless and had tears in my eyes. And folks, I am not a crier. I AM NOT A CRIER! Fetch has evolved so much. I cannot wait to continue his journey and I am hoping to catch up with some of the others on the way. This is hands down one of my favorite books!

#Review #Audiobook – Dead Man in a Ditch (The Fetch Phillips Novels Book 2) by Luke Arnold

In this brilliant sequel to actor Luke Arnold’s debut The Last Smile in Sunder City, a former soldier turned PI solves crime in a world that’s lost its magic. The name’s Fetch Phillips — what do you need? Cover a Gnome with a crossbow while he does a dodgy deal? Sure. Find out who killed Lance Niles, the big-shot businessman who just arrived in town? I’ll give it shot. Help an old-lady Elf track down her husband’s murderer? That’s right up my alley. What I don’t do, because it’s impossible, is search for a way to bring the goddamn magic back. Rumors got out about what happened with the Professor, so now people keep asking me to fix the world. But there’s no magic in this story. Just dead friends, twisted miracles, and a secret machine made to deliver a single shot of murder. Welcome back to the streets of Sunder City, a darkly imagined world perfect for readers of Ben Aaronovitch and Jim Butcher. Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I cannot get enough of this series. I highly recommend listening to it via audiobook. The author/narrator is phenomenal! Every gritty corner, unsavory character, questionable moral, is felt as if you are right in the story. I love the wittiness and how irritatingly twisted up it makes you feel while reading/listening to it. Fetch just can’t catch a break and just when he thinks he has things figured out, he is pulled into something else just as chaotic and crazy and going down another rabbit hole….or dragon hole. There is never a slow moment. All the characters bring something to the table. Every. Single. One. Fetch and the police department are getting along now (kind of), he has “friends,” some people from his past pop back up in his life (and seriously gave me some kind of feels!), but most importantly Fetch started trying to figure out exactly what he is doing. He has switched sides and shared secrets he shouldn’t have. He was a huge part of the problem and just wants to do the right thing. But, like most people (religions, politics, etc.), they all can justify their cause. Fetch needs to dig down deep and figure out what his cause really is.  I am extremely impressed with this series and NEED more!  I am on my way to list to the next in the series! Stay tuned for another review! Bravo, Luke Arnold, on a fantastic job!

My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods… or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there’s Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn’t felt anything for a hundred years. But there’s something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what’s broken in me.

Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I’m wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.

I read this book back in March 2014. Teresa has just released the audios and I am so enjoying going back and listening to them.  I could not believe how much of the minor things I forgotten over the years. I have to say I still love these warriors today as much as I did 5 years ago.

Nicole is a social worker that takes her job seriously. She is determined to keep the kids safe and it doesn’t matter if they are human or vampire.
Damon, one of the Vampire Council Warriors, was sent to train the social workers on how to protect themselves while doing their jobs. The sparks start to fly as soon as Nicole and Damon first see each other. However, Damon does not want to get involved and attached so Nicole comes up with a “friends with benefits” option.

I love that Nicole is tough and stands up to these big tough Vampires, never backing down never giving up and has no issues getting in their faces. Things start to go bad when Nicole and the others realize there are some pretty mean people out to get her because she is doing her job so well. Damon pulls the “I’m getting too close so I’ll push her away” routine and right after she lays her feelings out on the table.

I also enjoyed the close friendship almost sisterly like relationship that Nicole and Pam have. Seeing Nicole, Pam, and Jared interacting was great. Pam and Jared always made me smile or laugh. I would get aggravated with Damon he would be so sweet and nice and then go all Alpha male thinking he was protecting Nicole but only end up hurting her feelings. Here again Nicole always called him out on it and stood up to anyone she felt was doing wrong by her. I loved that she had pet turtles, Ren and Stimpy, and not the typical cat or dog. The way Nicole collects the money for the kids Christmas party was a gag.

Like i said enjoyed this book today as much as I did when I read it. I am so ready for Jared. The narrator did a wonderful job his voice changes were enough that you realized it was a different character.  I am so ready to listen to all these warriors stories and catch up on all of them.

Review by Twinsie Angie

I purchased this book.

I love this series and it’s an auto buy on eBook and audio whenever they come out.  I love the characters and the story line.  I especially love how the storyline is ever evolving.  The series doesn’t get “stale” because the world is always moving and growing.  The bad guys get worse, but the Warriors get better and better.  Don’t get me wrong Jared is still my favorite BUT he gets competition at times.

This is not a stand alone but a novella deep in the series…like way way deep in the series.

This is a short novella that allows us to have a brief insight into the Warriors and their Mats.  Unfortunately, not all the mates and warriors were the focus, but the main starter characters were, and I was ok with that.  We see Nicole and her Mates raising money for the Social Services she works for.  They always have some hijinks and shenanigans for sure and pull Sloan along kicking and screaming.  But this book Becky gave us some insight to her choices and those of Sloan that made me get a bit teary!! Steve and his family were so sweet but seeing this young punk grow into a good father makes my heart happy.

If you are a fan I know you will read it and if you haven’t’ started Grab Damon, Book 1.  Fall down the rabbit hole with the rest of us!

Welcome to Sunder City. The magic is gone but the monsters remain.

It’s nothing personal–I’m human myself. But after what happened to the magic, it’s not the humans who need my help.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

The Last Smile in Sunder City has a Noir Comic feel and is a great story. I listened to the story via audiobook and as kept thinking to myself, “how did the author come up with this title?” Then all of a sudden, it hit me and it fits this story perfectly. The world building is very intricate with a lot of twisted turns. Fetch has spent a lot of his life trying to find his place. Where does he belong, what is right and wrong, which side does he belong to? At this point in his life, he carries a great burden as he feels that he is the reason all the magic is gone. He caused this and is now in a constant state of loneliness and has basically shunned all humans, like himself. However, this latest case takes him down a rabbit hole that makes him remember much of his past and sparks a hope for the future. It is magical, gritty, dark, but witty. The narrator has the perfect voice for this type of storytelling. I look forward to uncovering more of Fetch’s monsters and seeing what else lies in the shadows of Sunder City.

#Review – Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic (Dowser Series Book 3) by Meghan Ciana Doidge

I hadn’t set foot in the human world for more than a few hours in over three and a half months. Sure, I was stronger and faster than I’d ever been before, and I had a shiny new sword, but I was seriously chocolate deprived. I don’t recommend quitting cold turkey. And the new sword was a problem — to my mind, anyway. It represented all the expectations of a powerful father and a new otherworldly life. A life that wasn’t the one I’d worked so hard to build. It also represented the responsibility I had to bring my foster sister Sienna to … what? Justice? I didn’t know if that was even possible. What I did know was that Sienna wouldn’t stop, and that I couldn’t just leave everything up to fate and destiny … or maybe I was. Maybe I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. If you believed in that sort of thing. I just hoped that before the chaos and mayhem renewed, I’d manage to get my hands on some chocolate. It didn’t even have to be single-origin Madagascar. I was utterly prepared to lower my standards.

Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic is the third book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

Whew! Jade learns so much but still needs to learn to trust herself.

“Nothing happens without purpose. It is just the why that is obscured.”

The path that Jade takes from book 2 to book 3 was different than I anticipated but we do get to meet a new friend!  This is quite a different adventure than the first two books, however we are still trying to chase Sienna and her chaotic craziness. The web that the author weaves for the plot is very intricate and done very well. There were a lot more emotional events in this book than I was expecting. There is still the usual wit and banter but it is definitely more emotional. This story brings ALL the Adepts together for a common cause. However, there are more questions. Something still doesn’t feel quite right. I am still not quite convinced that Sienna can be defeated. Even with everyone’s help, I just couldn’t quite shake that uneasy feeling. I am hoping that Jade’s backbone gets a bit stronger because she is still a little too naïve for me. We will see.

#Review – Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic (Dowser Series Book 2) by Meghan Ciana Doidge

Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works. Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic is the second book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I was completely hooked after reading Trinkets, Treasures, and other Bloody Magic that I jumped headfirst right into Book 2. Well, Sienna is gone and Jade is working to practice her magic. She continues to be extremely frustrated as everyone seems to be one step ahead of her. There are still lots of questions to be answered…a rare magical species is found, a life debt that is acting up, and then there are the families that are so full of loyalty, love and half-truths. Now a sorcerer wants to use her. The question is whether he wants to use her for good or evil. I really enjoyed the first book and couldn’t wait to get into the second book but the second didn’t go quite the way I thought it would. There were so many new characters that were introduced and then they just disappeared for a long time. You get a new plot with additional information about Jade’s past that then finally brings some answers. The ending really had my head spinning. It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting, and I honestly am not sure I am 100% behind where the story is going. I plan to continue the journey to at least the third book before I make any final decisions because I am very curious what happens next. This has definitely taken some twists and turns that were very unexpected.
