#Review #Audiobook – License to Bite: A Paranormal Romantic Comedy: New Orleans Nocturnes, Book 1 by Carrie Pulkinen

A laugh-out-loud funny paranormal romantic comedy featuring accidental fated mates, grumpy/sunshine dynamics, and a cast of quirky characters…all set in vibrant, chaotic New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

It’s all fun and games…until someone wakes up dead.

Governor’s daughter Jane Anderson is used to getting what she wants. When a girls’ trip to Mardi Gras thrusts her into the arms—and fangs—of New Orleans’ hottest vampire, he gifts her with immortality, super strength, and a complexion to die for.

There’s only one tiny problem. Jane faints at the sight of blood.

When Ethan Devereaux meets Jane, his cold, lifeless heart learns to beat again. Convinced she’s his late fiancée reincarnated, he turns her, claiming her as his own. But when Jane wakes up dead in Ethan’s attic, she’s loud, sassy, and downright ornery. He doesn’t know if he should kiss her or stake her, but one thing’s for certain…

She is so not his long-lost love.

But Ethan turned her, so he’s stuck with the chaotic glitter bomb of a fledgling, whether he likes it or not. Jane has three weeks to learn the ways of the vampire and get her license, or she’ll be staked. If Ethan can’t help her overcome her aversion to blood, his undead life might also be on the line.

License to Bite is the first book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series, filled with supernatural shenanigans, witty banter, campy humor, and a vampire who faints at the sight of blood.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

Frightfully fun! Jane has come to New Orleans for her travel blog. She is truly the glitter bomb that the blurb describes her as. She is not used to sitting still or keeping quiet. No one tells Jane Anderson what to do. Ethan is a broody vamp, just sick and tired of the mundane. He is just here. Then he sees Jane and he knows Jane is his dead fiancé reincarnated. Jane almost dies and Ethan “saves” her by turning her into a vampire. Jane ends up loving being a vampire but CANNOT stand the sight of blood and refuses to learn to feed. She has to learn and get her biting license or end up staked. Ethan, the rule follower, is constantly on edge with Jane and most of the time doesn’t know what to do with her. Jane, however, is shaking things up, speaking out of line, refusing to learn to feed, etc. Jane is finally growing on Ethan. I honestly think she would get under anyone’s skin. It was a fun, quick-paced story that I listened to in one sitting. I recommend and look forward to the next.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I picked this book up on a whim and I am so happy I did! Gabe and I are a lot alike. We joke about all the wrong things at all the wrong times. For that, I connected with him right away. Right from the very beginning, I was sucked in. It was exciting and gritty and dirty and disturbing and humorous and just overall fan-freaking-tastic! Gabe runs a sort of store in Hell trading items for information. Similar to black market types of items/information. Due to his resourcefulness, he has been chosen to work for the Judas Agency as a double agent. The jobs that he and his new partner get into are quite sketchy. Gabe and his partner get closer by sharing some of their past secrets. However, this brings a whole new set of shenanigans with lots of action to the story. If something can happen here, it will. I wasn’t sure about the story, but I absolutely loved it and am looking forward to continuing the series. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was pretty awesome! Highly recommend it!

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I read the blurb and was instantly drawn in. I had to read the story about Minerva and figure out why on Earthy she bonded to a pigeon as a familiar. I mean, anyone that has read anything paranormal or supernatural knows that this is completely out of the ordinary. Now, I didn’t READ the book, I listened to the audiobook. When the story begins, you feel like you are in a supernatural version of the television show, FRIENDS. That was pretty cool as it sets the series up to include all of the characters. I assumed that this book would focus on Minerva and her pigeon familiar. I did not expect that this would have multiple narrators, one for each character, or that the story was being told from each character’s point of view. That was a bit confusing for me. This story wasn’t just Minerva’s story, but it was a little bit about all of the characters. By the time I was getting the hang of each narrator’s voice for each character, the story ended….with a cliffhanger. I have a lot of mixed feelings about the story because of this. I want to know more but also had to put in a lot of effort to enjoy it. I think there is a lot of potential with this story and am planning to  give the second story a try.

Bridget won her first writing contest in first grade with a story about a day in the life of a little spot of air. (Who says you need a good hook?)

She hasn’t stopped writing (or talking) since then, although she was briefly derailed by her pursuit of a legal career. Ultimately, boring words, well, bored her. She quit her job to spend less time counting gobs of ill gotten gains, and more time writing stories.

She loves her husband and all five of her kids (most days). She has two yappy dogs and a bouncy dog, five goofy horses, lions head rabbits, more chickens than she will admit to having, and two demanding cats. Every day is a battle between playing with kids, riding her horse Leo, and writing. (Plus, now she’s homeschooling the two youngest children…) If her publication speed has slowed down, you can blame the kids and the horses.

She makes cookies all the time and thinks they should have their own food group. In a (possibly misguided) attempt at balancing the scales between overconsumption and exertion, she kickboxes every day. So if you don’t like her kids, her cookies, or her books, maybe don’t tell her in person.

I received this book from the authors for an honest review.

I am a huge fan of both these authors so when they were talking about this series I was all in.  Both have great humor and write paranormal so I knew this would be for me.   I mean Gnomes appearing in a story…its gotta be amazing!

The book took a great change of pace when our love interest, Jack, was a romance writer.  I loved that he was defending what he writes and had crazy granny on his side to Kennedy.  (Crazy Granny made the book to be honest.  I mean she is what I hope to be when I am older.)

Kennedy and Jack definitely had a good chemistry.  They had some hilarious banter especially with Kennedy’s brother in regards to Jack.  I really enjoyed the start of the series but admit I was a little let down that the Gnomes were only in a smidgen of the book.  I really expected them in more.  However maybe they will appear in more with the other books in the series.

AJ Renee is a military wife and mother of three. She graduated from the University of Central Florida with her Master of Science in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.

She loves to read and write steamy romance with a happily ever after. When not working, you can find her playing World of Warcraft, board games, or outdoors for a run or hike.

Escaping reality one book at a time has been Miranda’s motto since she learned to read. As an only child raised on a dairy farm her creative imagination brought words to life. She devoured more books growing up than her little town bookmobile could handle. It was inevitable that she would turn from reading them to writing them. This is her way to help not only herself but others escape the day to day drudge. Her books may take you on a journey through time, give you a look inside a fantasy realm, or delve into the magic of almost anything paranormal. Threading in heart stopping romance and dropping an occasional super sexy scene just to keep you on your toes.

Miranda’s stories are focused around strong female leads and sexy males who appreciate them. She strives to encourage her readers that they can have it all in real life too.

You can find her most days either subbing at the local high school or tucked away in her office working on the next story with a cup of java in her hand. She loves connecting with her readers online as well as in real life so make sure to find her on Facebook and check out where she will be signing throughout the year on her website.

#Review #Audio – Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen

Chaz Perrone might be the only marine scientist in the world who doesn’t know which way the Gulf Stream runs. He might also be the only one who went into biology just to make a killing, and now he’s found a way–doctoring water samples so that a ruthless agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the endangered Everglades. When Chaz suspects that his wife, Joey, has figured out his scam, he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner into the night-dark Atlantic. Unfortunately for Chaz, his wife doesn’t die in the fall.

Clinging blindly to a bale of Jamaican pot, Joey Perrone is plucked from the ocean by former cop and current loner Mick Stranahan. Instead of rushing to the police and reporting her husband’s crime, Joey decides to stay dead and (with Mick’s help) screw with Chaz until he screws himself.

As Joey haunts and taunts her homicidal husband, as Chaz’s cold-blooded cohorts in pollution grow uneasy about his ineptitude and increasingly erratic behavior, as Mick Stranahan discovers that six failed marriages and years of island solitude haven’t killed the reckless romantic in him, we’re taken on a hilarious, full-throttle, pure Hiaasen ride through the warped politics and mayhem of the human environment, and the human heart.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

Skinny Dip is hilariously incredible! There is never a dull moment during this story. There are so many characters, all well developed, and each one plays a very important part with the story. Every decision, twist, turn, haunting, cheating, discovery….all of everything, I was hooked. What am I saying? I am hooked! This is the second book I have read by this author and Carl Hiaasen is in my top ten favorite! On more than one occasion I sat here with my mouth open, shaking my head in disbelief at what just happened then laughed my butt off at the response! It is hilarious if you have a twisted sense of humor….like me! I love the hijinks and craziness. Skinny Dip is one of those stories that is a train wreck that you just can’t stop watching. You just know something bad is going to happen, but you can’t look away. OOOOOHHHHH, and poor Chaz. How this comes full circle for him in the end had me in stitches. Literally, I was laughing out loud. Let me tell you that it was the absolute perfect ending.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I read the blurb and was instantly intrigued. I listened to this via audiobook. The narrator was great! I usually have to speed the up the audio a bit but did not have to do that with this one. Brody’s and Posie’s story is great. Almost a grumpy/sunshine type of story. Both of them are a take no sh!t type of personality but cannot deny that there is a spark between them. However, the whole, “Grim Dating” really has thrown both of them for a loop. It’s funny with a lot of witty banter. I really love how Heaven and Hell with some of the Greek mythology has been weaved in. I had a little trouble getting started with the story. I was put off a bit with Lucifer’s daughters. I didn’t really get into the story until about 15-20% of the book when Brody’s story really got started. That first chunk is needed for backstory, and it is needed so that when Brody and Posie finally do bump into each other, all Hell doesn’t break loose, no pun intended, lol!

#Review #AudioBook – Bad Monkey by Carl Hiaasen

Now an Apple Original series from Ted Lasso Executive Producer Bill Lawrence and starring Vince Vaughn • A wickedly funny novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Squeeze Me in which the greedy, the corrupt, and the degraders of what’s left of pristine Florida—now, of the Bahamas as well—get their comeuppance.

“[A] comedic marvel … [Hiaasen] hasn’t written a novel this funny since Skinny Dip.”—The New York Times

Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first—this being Hiaasen country—Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including his just-ex lover, a hot-blooded fugitive from Kansas; the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; two avariciously optimistic real-estate speculators; the Bahamian voodoo witch known as the Dragon Queen, whose suitors are blinded unto death by her peculiar charms; Yancy’s new true love, a kinky coroner; and the eponymous bad monkey, who with hilarious aplomb earns his place among Carl Hiaasen’s greatest characters.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

Bad Monkey had me in stitches! I listened to this book in audio and the narrator was perfect for this story. For context, we have had a lot of things going on at our house and the house is in complete disarray. I decide to pop Bad Monkey in my earbuds and listen away while I am taking care of business. On numerous occasions, way more than I could keep track of, I found myself smiling, literally laughing out loud, and shaking my head at whatever shenanigan or situation Yancy just got himself caught up in again. My husband thought I was insane (shhhh, I am a little on the crazy side, LOL)! I could not get enough of this story! I was absolutely hooked when I found out why Yancy was kicked off the force. His actions were not right but it was sooooo right. You need to read this so you understand. It makes complete sense! All of the characters are well developed and have so many different quirks. Even Yancy, as unconventional as he is, his loyalty runs deep and his love of the Key Deer is amazing! There is a lot of dark humor but it is a comedic delight! There is no shortage of witty banter but a true mystery, nonetheless. OH, and let us not forget about the ARM! The dang arm! Oh, you must read this to find out what happens to the arm! You won’t be disappointed, I promise!

One note. I have not watched the TV series, but I did watch the trailer. In the trailer it appears that Yancy hits the guy in a golf cart and sends him into the water. This is NOT why he is kicked off the force in the book. I would suggest a read to find out why, it is much dirtier…..go on. You know you are intrigued now, LOL!

#Review #Audio – One Hit Wonder: A Samantha True Mystery (Prequel) (The Samantha True Mysteries Book 1) by Kristi Rose

Sometimes it’s not opportunity knocking, it’s trouble.
On the night of Samantha True’s first job as a forensic photographer she learns three things:

  1. Crime scenes are messy.
  2. Especially when you throw up on them.
  3. She may not be cut out for this.

When the police drag her to a second investigation, she’s just as baffled by the crime scene as they are. Why is the school lunch lady, Miss Trina, chained to a pole? Is this somehow connected to the robberies taking place all over Wind River?
Samantha might not be cut out for photographing blood-covered crime scenes, but being the daughter of the town newspaper man, she has plenty of investigating intuition. Besides, this is her hometown, and she’s not about to let it become ravaged by crime.
As the locals rally to help Miss Trina, Samantha begins her poking around and uncovers sinister dealings, causing her to question everything–and everyone–she knows.
Her small town is full of shadowy secrets. And she might be happier staying in the dark.

A laugh-out-loud mystery that will keep you guessing and quickly turning the pages. One Hit Wonder offers the just right reader escape, but fair warning, this book leaves readers wanting more.

Warning: May cause spontaneous laughter. This mystery offers witty banter, characters you’ll want to be friends with, and is a perfect escape to the Pacific Northwest. Laughing out loud in public may cause curious glances from strangers.

This book is a 2-4 hour read. Depending on your speed and interruptions. This book doesn’t haven’t to be read in the series order and takes place 10 years prior to ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I read the blurb and immediately was intrigued. This is the first book I have listened/read by this author so I thought I would give the prequel a whirl. I was pulled in pretty quickly. Samantha is called to an accident crash to take photos, but she hadn’t been feeling well and ends up vomiting while on the call…This was my first funny because it’s something I could totally see myself doing, LOL! The next scene really gets under your skin and pulls at your heart strings. The plot thickens! There are lots of secrets and random tidbits that come up which don’t always add up. One of the things that I had difficulty with the main character, Samantha, is that she was explicitly told several times that she took the photos for the police and she is not to discuss the case with anyone. But she immediately talks to her reporter father and her best friend. It seems like she just blabbed about everything. It drove me nuts! However, it didn’t ruin the story for me. The ending wrapped up pretty perfectly and had me in stitches! I am going to give the next book a try and see what happens later in Samantha True’s life. 😊

Twinsie Kelly’s Review

I listened to this via audio. Right at the beginning, I wasn’t sure I was going to like the book because Mitzy had a man in her bed that was not Erick! Sorry for the spoiler, but you have to read the story! While out taking Pyewacket for a walk, Mitzy finds a dead body. I swear if there is a corpse, Mitzy is going to find it! The thing with this one is, the corpse is closer to the family and she is asked by Odell to look into things. Now she has to unravel tons of secrets but some are even from her Ghost-ma! ….sigh…. I love how she has wriggled her way into the town’s hearts and has become one of them. She literally went from having no family to having so much family that it will fill your heart. But let’s not forget about all the banter between Mitzy and Sheriff Erick, haha! Silas, her attorney, has really stepped up in this book. His character is almost like an uncle of sorts. He has some funny quips that made me chuckle. I love having him around. The twists in this story definitely had me yelling at Mitzy and at the same time rooting for her all the same. I am digging her sleuthing and have the third book loaded and ready to go!

#Review – The Edge of Evil: A Paranormal Women’s Fiction Novel: Good to the Last Demon, Book 2 by Robyn Peterman

What happens in Vegas, slaysin Vegas.

With a show to produce and my career as an actress on the line, I really don’t have time to die—especially violently. However, while that might not be on my agenda, it seems to be on other’s.

Awesome.

Instead of acting in my latest endeavor, I’m playing the real-life role of Reluctant Demon Who Has To Save The World—or at the very least, the hot hero.

Fine. I’m always up for a plot twist or a re-write.

Scene One— Save Abaddon from the evil clutches of the hideous Pandora.

Scene Two — Don’t die.

Scene Three — Avoid Pandora like the plague. I understand she has an evil box…

Scene Four — Do not die.

Scene Five — Possibly meet my mom, the woman who abandoned me as a baby.

Scene Six — Do Not Freaking Die.

Scene Seven — Go back to my non-deadly life and win a damn Emmy for Ass The World Turns.

Even though I’m living on the edge of evil, half insanity, half upheaval, I’m a pro and the show must go on.

As the saying goes, a bad dress rehearsal means I don’t get dismembered on opening night. Or something like that.

It’s showtime, folks.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more outrageous, I was proven wrong! Buckle up, Buttercup! Meeting Candy Vargo was the highlight of this trip! If you want something serious, just walk away now. This isn’t for you. If you want something that is going to continue to keep you on the edge of your seat to see what the next off the wall, silly, wonky, ridonkulous thing that Ms. Peterman can put these characters through, then keep on keepin’ on! This rag tag bunch seems to be loyal to a fault, Cecily is really coming into her powers and showing that she isn’t going to back down, but we still get all the follies that I enjoy so much!!!!

Lovin it!!
