#Review #AudioBook – Mother Knows Best: A Novel of Suspense by Kira Peikoff

One of POPSUGAR’s Top 15 Medical Thrillers
One of REAL SIMPLE’s 35 Chilling Psychological Thrillers

A mother’s worst nightmare, a chance at redemption, and a deadly secret that haunts a family across the generations—“the psychological thriller everyone will be talking about” (Lisa Scottaline)

There’s only room for one mother in this family.

Claire Abrams’s dreams became a nightmare when she passed on a genetic mutation that killed her little boy. Now she wants a second chance to be a mother, and finds it in Robert Nash, a maverick fertility doctor who works under the radar with Jillian Hendricks, a cunning young scientist bent on making her mark–and seducing her boss.

Claire, Robert, and Jillian work together to create the world’s first baby with three genetic parents–an unprecedented feat that could eliminate inherited disease. But when word of their illegal experiment leaks to the wrong person, Robert escapes into hiding with the now-pregnant Claire, leaving Jillian to serve out a prison sentence that destroys her future.

Ten years later, a spunky girl named Abigail begins to understand that all is not right with the reclusive man and woman she knows as her parents. But the family’s problems are only beginning. Jillian, hardened by a decade of jealousy and loss, has returned–and nothing will stop her from reuniting with the man and daughter who should have been hers.

Past, present, and future converge in this mesmerizing psychological thriller from critically acclaimed author Kira Peikoff.

Um…this book. Wow. What the heck did I just listen to??

So I went in completely blind, which I highly reccomend doing if you can and what a ride it was. I had absolutely NO idea what was going on. I was left feeling confused at times, frustrated and stressed out but man, those were amazing feelings to have while listening to this book.

So Kira Peikoff is a brand new to me author and this will definitely not be my last book of hers that I read/listen to. I enjoyed how detailed this book was. There are things in it that I’m left wondering if they can actually happen or not but I’m no doctor or scientist, so I’ll leave that up to the professionals.

Claire and Ethan have been trying for a baby for a while. They had a son, who unfortunately had a medical condition that ended up taking his life. They decided to try for a second baby but that hadn’t happened yet and they weren’t getting any younger. So a woman desperate to have that baby, would almost do anything to have one. Trust me, from someone who knows how that feels, I’ve been tempted to do some crazy things to have a kid of my own. But that’s a story for another day over lots of alcohol.

Claire ends up going to this fertility doctor and it all becomes crazy from there.

A woman desperate to have another baby.

A scientist desperate to make her way in a world that for the most part, is run by men.

A man who thinks this fertility doctor’s ways are unethical.

And more.

Wow. Just wow. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this book. I was left yelling at my phone, demanding to know what was going on and I was trying to urge the narrators on to talk faster. I needed to know!

The book is written in 3 different POVs (point of views) and I enjoyed them all but the one, actually got on my nerves part way through the book. If you listen to the audio book of this, you’ll understand why.

Thank you, Kira, for an amazing story and for making me feel things as a reader that doesn’t normally happen.

Oh and if you like a little romance with your suspense, this book has that too.

#Review #AudioBook – One Little Mistake: A Novella by Lucinda Berry (An Audible Original)

From the best-selling author of The Secrets of Us and The Best of Friends comes a novella of deceit, desperation, and how one little mistake can unravel a life.
When overwhelmed stay-at-home mom Alexis finds herself at odds with her husband after she’s charged with a DUI, she is given one chance to get her family back: complete AA and admit her faults. The problem is, she’s never had a drinking problem and has no idea what caused the blackout that led to her arrest. Still, she’s committed to working through the program, if that’s what it takes to be reunited with her two young children. But when she connects with a new friend, Farrah – a confident, successful powerhouse of a woman Alexis can’t help but idolize – she’s empowered to take a closer look at her husband’s role in her downfall. What she finds shocks her to her core, quickly spiraling into something more sinister than she ever imagined.

I really liked this novella. I don’t usually listen to audio books but my reading has been limited lately, so thought I’d give it a shot. And what better way to do that then by listening to one of my favourite authors? AND it’s an audible original too, which is even cooler.

Alexis is having a hard time of it. She has a young daughter and just gave birth to a son a few months ago. Her husband is no help at all. Which let me tell you, was highly infuriating to read.

Unfortunately for Alexis, she decides to have a glass of wine one day, a little earlier than normal for her, and the next thing she knows, she’s waking up in the drunk tank. Buuut after only having a couple glasses, maybe only 2, she doesn’t remember anything at all. Even though she’s a light weight when it comes to alcohol, she knows that there is no way that she could have blacked out.

The one twist in this book wasn’t overly surprising but the 2nd one, yeah, I couldn’t predict it at all.

It just shows that there are a lot of people out there who take advantage when someone is down on their luck. And poor Alexis fell victim to it.

The book, although short, was a fun afternoon listen. It was entertaining and I can’t wait for more.

Also, as with most novellas, I do wish this one was longer but that’s just me.

This is my first audiobook review and I really liked the narrator. She did a fantastic job and coming from someone who is only starting to get into audiobooks, she held my interest and I wasn’t bored.

Its that time again we closed the door on 2021 and starting 2022.  My 2021 was a little crazy and I didn’t get as much reading in as I would have liked. So instead of giving you my top 5 for June through December I decided to post a few of my favorites that I read this year.

Review by Twinsie Angie

I purchased this audiobook.

This was the first audio narration I have heard from Lacy Laurel. She did a good job changing up the different voices from women to men. The females voices were a bit similar but through the conversation you could tell who was who.

This is a short novella I downloaded after finishing a super duper long…16 hour…..audio story. I needed just a quick in and out love story. This is a best friends to lovers story/2nd Chance Romance Story.

Beth and Bryce were besties in college who were both feeling the other but never crossed that line. When Bryce was leaving for Harvard there was some jealousy issues that got in the way of their possible “love connection” and they parted ways. Bryce was never really sure what happened to Beth and Beth was all in her feelings. Now I admit I have a few questions about the story. They are friends so her being angry that he was hooking up with someone was kinda a stretch for me. But Bryce tells the “hook up” two different ways so I was confused. First he says the girl asked for help and he went to her room. She came on to him and he declines…then he says they were making out and we went to have sex but sees Beth’s picture and declines said offer. So I think that would have been caught with beta readers and ARC readers to be better flushed out.
All in all the story was them finding each other again and admitting how they felt about each other in the past and figuring out what to do with the time they have now. I think this was a good story and enjoyable read. It could have been flushed out a bit more but I did enjoy listening when I was getting ready and driving to work.

CJ Warrant is a lover, a hater and sometimes a fighter for all she’s passionate about. She can’t exist without coffee, chocolate and a damn story brewing in her head. She was born an overseas Army brat, in a Korean Italian household but settled in the states at the ripe old age of five.
With a long career in the beauty industry, a wonderful marriage to a great man and three kids nearly all grown, her view of life is as such. Life is a journey; both good and bad, light and dark, but she takes it all in and learns from every experience life has to offer. She takes those crazy moments, stirs in the dark and brings her passion for words to life.

(previously published as Pit Perfect in 2016)

Lily gets more than she bargains for when a rescue pit bull named Smooshie rescues her from an oncoming car, and it’s love at first sight. Thanks to Smooshie, Lily’s first two wishes are granted by Parker Knowles, the owner of the Pit Bull Rescue center, who offers her a job at the shelter and the room over his garage for rent.

Lily’s new life as an integrator is threatened when Smooshie finds Katherine Kapersky, the local church choir leader and head of the town council, dead in the field behind the rescue center. Unfortunately, there are more suspects than mourners for the elderly town leader. Can Lily keep her less-than-human status under wraps? Or will the killer, who has pulled off a nearly Pit Perfect murder, expose her to keep Lily and her dog from digging up the truth?

Fall in love with Lily Mason, the shifter who only wants to live as a human, and her pit bull Smooshie, a rescue dog who in the end may be the one doing the rescuing!

Pit Perfect Murder, Book 1 of the Barkside of the Moon Mysteries from USA Today bestselling paranormal cozy mystery author Renee George, is an exciting tale of mystery and suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat. A clean read full of humor and small town charm.

Review by Twinsie Angie

I purchased the audio book with my credits.

Hello Pittie momma so of course I had to grab it.  Then when I saw the main character Lily is a shifter….uhm paranormal are my jam so yessssss score score score!!

I will admit I am not a giant mystery reader but I loved the format and the comedy of the story, so it hit me in the right spot.

Lily has been surrounded by sadness her whole life.  She leaves home to find a long-lost uncle she never knew existed.  Uncle/Cousin Buzz wasn’t so keen on keeping his niece/cousin in town buuut they start to bond.  If you wanna know the uncle/cousin and niece/cousin story line I guess you need to read the story.

Lily is wondering through town when a pit bull runs up and adopts her as her person.  Lily also meets her new friend, Smooshies, owner and smitten is a word you could use.  Parker is kind and gentle plus kinda hot for a human so when he is accused of murder……Lily can’t handle it and is off to use her paranormal powers to solve the case.  No offense but she really was an awful person in live…old Katherine. *Growls*

I really enjoyed the who-done-it and getting to meet the characters in the town.  I personally can’t wait to see Buzz settle down, but I really want to see Parker and Lily maybe *wiggles eyes* admit some feelings for one another.  But Parker’s dad was also the best ever.  Honestly other then the old bitty who died, I loved the town.  LOL

#Review #Audio – Bitter Edge, Cocky Hero Club Novel by Adriana Rose, Narration by Morae Brehon and Gregory Salinas

Bitter Edge (Cocky Hero Club)

He was sent to put my body and dreams back together. Were they things I even wanted anymore?
Spencer Broten was a pain in my backside from the moment we met.
I was conned into going on a road trip with him.
Within hours, I realized he wasn’t just my trainer. He was much more.
This unnamed, unplanned winding road turned into us getting to know each other as we truly were.
Two broken bodies, two broken souls finding out we were more the same than different.
The line between hate and love is a bitter edge.
Outside or inside.
Where will we land?

I purchased this book and audio when I met the author at a book signing.

Narration was great.  I loved Gregory’s Australia accent.  Morea did a great job trying to nail it as well.  Both brought a lot of li

First of all, I gotta say this book reminded me of the movie “The Cutting Edge”.  Do you remember that flick about the ice princess figure skater and the washed-up hockey player?  This book reminded me so much of that movie!!  I loved the movie, so I was here for the books as well.

Cierra and Spencer are both broken souls.  Spencer is broke, because he gave up everything including love to chase his dream to stay in professional hockey.  The dream was smashed and now he is trying to figure his life out when a job opportunity lands in front of him.

Cierra is a broken skater who doesn’t even know if she even loves this sport anymore.  She is tired of not making any decisions about her life for herself. She is tired of everyone telling her what to do and when to do it.  She rebels and sure as hell isn’t going to listen to this NEW IDIOT tell her what to do.

Cierra and Spencer take a roadtrip and everything changes in an instant.  They decide to live life and see what can happen.  They both know that this will change everything…either for the better or the worse.

I enjoyed the couple and seeing them start to form an attraction and work through all their issues.  This book was my first read by this author, but I hope not my last

Author and hopeless romantic, Ariana Rose, dabbles in all forms of contemporary romance. All her novels do have one thing in common. Her heroes and heroines are as passionate about life and love as they are about each other.

A mother of two, she hails from the Midwest. Born and raised in the Minneapolis area, she’s always been a storyteller and known to have a flair for the dramatic. Her daughter is just across the border attending college and is a go to for all things web design. I received a copy of the audio book from the author for an honest review.

This is the final book in this trilogy. What a wonderful journey it has been to watch these five go from high school to college and now forward. Allie Martina and Chris Patton did a great job with the narration and kept me engaged throughout the entire book. I was able to follow then easily going between characters.

This book we get to see Kendal, Teagan, Goose, Mav, and Lucas relationship grow. The wedding and honeymoon was fabulous all I can say is OH MY maple syrup. I love how they make sure they have alone time and time together. They have bumps in the road and not easy ones but the bond they all have gets them through it.

I enjoyed each book in this series. I am sad to see it end but maybe we will see more of this family in the future.

Brandy Slaven lives in Tennessee with her husband and two wild children. If you can’t find her typing away at her laptop, you will find her with her nose in a book at the beach or hiking at a state park.

#AudioReview – Ryan’s Bed by: Tijan Narrator: Therese Plummer

Ryan's Bed

I crawled into Ryan Jensen’s bed that first night by accident.

I barely knew him. I thought it was his sister’s bed—her room. It took seconds to realize my error, and I should’ve left…

I didn’t.
I didn’t jump out.
I didn’t get embarrassed.
I relaxed.
And that night, in that moment, it was the only thing I craved.

I asked to stay. He let me, and I slept.

The truth? I never wanted to leave his bed. If I could’ve stayed forever, I would have.
He became my sanctuary.

Because—four hours earlier—my twin sister killed herself.

Review by Twinsie Melinda

I purchased this Audio.

I enjoy listening Theresa Plummer narrating this story. She does a great job with both male and female voices. I was able to tell which female and which male was talking. She really kept me engaged in the story. Tijan has an amazing way of writing a story that guts you and puts you back together along the way.

Mackenzie finds her twin on the bathroom floor in a pool of her own blood. Her other half is gone and Mackenzie finds herself in a new house, a new town and currently a stranger’s home trying to deal with the biggest loss of her life. She somehow manages to find her way into the wrong room and wrong bed, Ryan’s bed, but to her this bed feels so right.
Mackenzie is trying to deal with the loss of her twin but she hears her and sees her and the only comfort she has is when Ryan is near. She is trying to get through everything day by day and dealing with a new school. I love that she still has spunk and does not back down when mean girls are around.

Ryan is drawn to Mac from the beginning he truly gets what she is going through and helps her the best he can. The chemistry between these two is explosive. Love how understanding, compassionate and loving he is toward Mac.
I like that we were placed in Mac’s head and learned so much about both her and Willow. Mac is strong female although she may not always believe it or fee it she is. I loved her spirit and tenacity. Takes a lot to over come what she did and be able to still standup for herself.

Very well written book for such a hard subject of teen suicide to tackle .

Tijan is a New York Times Bestselling author that writes suspenseful and unpredictable novels. Her characters are strong, intense, and gut-wrenchingly real with a little bit of sass on the side. Tijan began writing later in life and once she started, she was hooked. She’s written multi-bestsellers including the Carter Reed Series, the Fallen Crest Series, and Ryan’s Bed among others. Although their lives may have been put on pause, together they just might find a way to heal.

Audio Review by Twinsie Angie

I was given this audio book for an honest review by the author.

I was excited to read alllllllll about Leif after reading Repeat.  You do not need to read that book to follow along as they are both standalone stories.

Anna wakes up and finds out she has been in a coma for a LONG time.  Not only has she been out but so has her husband *Wink* and he came home with some baggage.  Anna is not one to stand by and do nothing.  She moves on with her life.  The strange part of it all was that the one who helped her was also in the same accident as she was.

Leif felt for the angel in the bed.  He was doing all her could to help her and when she wakes up, he is stunned stupid to see her standing on his front step.  He is drawn to her but…well…women are horrible beasts so he needs to stay away….but he cant because its Anna and she isn’t a horrible beast.

The two have a back-and-forth chemistry with the pushing forward and step backward.  There were a few times I felt it was a bit much the back and forth.  When they finally decide to step into the new territory of roommates with benefits things get spicey quickly!!  I enjoyed Leif showing her men are worth the trouble and she shows him not all women are like his ex-too.  They both find what they need and what they have been missing their entire life with their roommate.

I loved Anna’s mom and her matchmaking behind the scenes.  This woman is a GEM!!  She knew what buttons to push to get BOTH of them out of their heads and into each other’s pants!!

Audio Review by Twinsie Melinda

I received this audio from the author for an honest review.

I enjoyed listening to this book. Andi Arndt is one of my favorite narrators and she did a great job with the audio.  Her transitions between characters was seamless. Andi did well with keeping me engaged in the story.

I was so excited when I realized this was about Leif, Ed’s brother from Repeat.  I enjoyed seeing glimps of Ed and Clem also. Ok back to Leif and Anna.

Anna wakes up after being in a coma to find her world has been turned upside down. Not only has time slipped by but her hubby was so devastated she was in a coma he slept with her best friend. Yep what a great husband and friend.

Leif was in the same accident that put Anna in a coma. We learn he not only helped her after the accident but checked on her and read to her at the hospital.

Leif does not want to get involved with anyone after he had his heart shedded but Anna calls to him.

I enjoyed seeing these two together and watching Leif try to prove not all men are self centered asses and Anna proving not all women will take his heart and shred it to pieces. I like their banter and chemistry. Leif may seem to the the bad boy but he was so loving toward Anna and his humor was entertaining.

#WOTR21 #Football #Series #Review #Audio – Fourth and Goal: Book 4 of the Love By the Yard Series by Michel Prince; Narration by Logan McAllister

Fourth and Goal: Book 4 of the Love By the Yard Series by [Michel Prince]

Warning: For Mature Adult Audiences 18+. Contains language and actions some may deem offensive. Sexually explicit content. MF.

In book four of Love by the Yard: Beaumont Guthry, in his short time in the sport, prepares to step out of the shadow as a backup quarterback and into the spotlight as he takes over the Chicago Grizzlies. The team may be desperate for a quarterback, but Beau fears his style might get him benched before the first pass is in the air. For Beau, it will be the first time his father’s money won’t help to smooth over any missteps he makes.

The thirst for knowledge is what has kept Esme Carmichael in college for the last eight years. When her parents draw a line in the sand, forcing her to pick a degree and graduate, Esme realizes her biggest worry in the last decade has been could she swing more than two hours sleep a night.

Esme, instead of the four walls and security of a classroom, is faced with the future, one which petrifies her.
Meeting Beau seemed to be the perfect distraction she needed. What she didn’t count on was his past derailing their chance for a relationship—a relationship, she nor he signed up for. It was supposed to be a simple deal—sex—no strings, no complications.

Review by Twinsie Angie

I purchased this audio book.

Logan does an outstanding job of narrating for all the books in this series.  I enjoy his natural and calm voice for each book.  He brings each character to life with his amazing smooth voice.

Esme…she is the best best friend a girl could have.  She is a hot mess of flittering all around the world and seems to lose interest in everything until she meets the new man whore drunk quarterback Beau.

Beau needs some ass kicking and Esme is the girl to do it.  LOL  He thinks he is all that and yes he is but he needs some humble pie as well. Which Esme is happy to do on the regular.

When these two meets and decide to have some simple friends with benefits action they never imagine love might happen too.  Beau has a lot of ghosts to deal with and Esme has a past boyfriend she needs to conquer before she can open her heart to this reformed playboy.

Beau has never had someone value him for more then what he can give or buy them.  Esme has never had a man be able to keep her attention for more than 1 night at a time.  When they both start to learn to lean one each other they are freaking out but also hoping maybe more can come to it.

I loved the two and enjoyed their play time but was also screaming at them to JUST ADMIT THEY LOVE EACH OTHER DAMN IT!!!!  The two are another amazing and fun.  They are a great addition to the series but Dalton is still my baby daddy!!!

Michel Prince is an author who graduated with a bachelor degree in History and Political Science. Michel writes young adult and adult paranormal romance as well as contemporary romance.

She knows eventually they find their way out of her head and to her fingertips and she looks forward to sharing them with you.

When Michel can suppress the voices in her head she can be found at a scouting event or cheering for her son in a variety of sports. She would like to thank her family for always being in her corner and especially her husband for supporting her every dream and never letting her give up.
