#Review – CAPTURED (Ruins of Playa Azul #1) by H.R. Savage

CAPTURED (Ruins of Playa Azul #1)

I was raised in a world full of more death than life, surrounded by the blood-curdling violence and nauseating stench of zombies.

And twenty years after the Outbreak, it doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon.

After a devastating loss rocks my little group of survivors, I’m forced to venture out of my comfort zone in an attempt to find help—straight into the impenetrable walls of El Castillo.

But The Knights don’t take kindly to my mission, and when their leader, Gunner, captures me, everything spirals out of control. My captor suddenly becomes my ally as we’re thrust into a war of Gunner’s own making.

A war that threatens not only his people, but my own.

NOTE: True to an apocalyptic world, CAPTURED has dark scenes that may trigger some readers. However, it is not a Stockholm Syndrome Romance.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

If you are an apocalyptic fan, then this is a must read! This is a “zombie” book but it is much more than that. What I really enjoyed is that the story is 20 years after the outbreak and it is so much more about the overall survival than fighting the zombies at outbreak. The zombies are a threat but humans are much more cruel. Humans are calculating and cunning where the zombies react purely on instinct. Survival is all the nuances of what you will do to actually live. Thea is the MC and she is the one person you definitely want to have on your side. She is fierce and will do the craziest things to be sure you are safe and healthy. She struggles greatly with trying to keep her group safe. As if the apocalypse isn’t tragic enough on its own, she experiences great loss. While coping with this madness, she may have met her match when she is captured by Gunner while breaking into his compound. People do crazy things to keep their family safe and Gunner is no exception. When he decides to help Thea, they run into many more problems from another group that is the lowest of low of humanity.

“Because in a world where fleeing is survival, you don’t run away. You run headfirst into danger if it means saving someone’s life. And you learned that from him. Why?”…”Because, Gunner, someone has to.”

“Just days ago I wanted to destroy you,” …. “Yet here I am now, determined to make sure you don’t destroy yourself.”

This book has all the feels that will twist you up over and over again. H.R. Savage is a new author for me and now I am completely hooked. I can’t wait for more, I need to know what happens next!

H.R. Savage

Author H.R. Savage (Heather) started reading romance at an age that made her father cringe as she tried to hide the cover behind her hands. She technically finished writing her first book in Junior High, where it mysteriously disappeared in a reformatting incident. Due to the encouragement of her English teachers at her small town school in La Verne, California, she never lost her love for the art. Now a woman who swears by the power of coffee, Chinese food, and wine (not necessarily in that order), she decided it was time to create stories from the characters in her head.

When Heather isn’t writing, outlining, or pinning pictures of hot ‘character inspirations’ on Pinterest™, she is spending time with her three beautiful children and handsome husband.

#WOTR21 #AuthorSpotlight – Derek Masters

Derek Masters

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Derek Masters and I write romance with a raging heart on! I’m a huge sports fanatic, cheering on my St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs. I’m a former professional wrestler and currently work as a correctional officer in a maximum security prison.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Definitely the follow up books. My mind is constantly thinking of new ideas and it can be a struggle writing a series when you have an unrelated idea you’re dying to write. This is the reason the majority of my titles are stand-alones.

What comes first? The plot or characters

They both are born at the same time, but the plot changes through the characters. My characters are constantly guiding me into directions that are far from what the plot says.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Dean Koontz

What is harder? The blurb writing, naming the book, or naming the series.

The blurb is the bane of my existence

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

Having readers tell me they could relate to Share Me. It was my first novel and I tried to write it in a way that told the story as close to real life as possible. Hearing so many people tell me they could relate to it made it all worth it.

What is your definition of success?

To me, success is completing a book. Even if nobody ever buys it, finishing a manuscript is a huge accomplishment. With that said, I consider the book an even bigger success when readers love it!

#WOTR21 #Review – Professional Liar (Twisted Shakespeare Book 1) by Monica Corwin

Professional Liar (Twisted Shakespeare Book 1)

My sister Bianca and I have two rules governing the dispensation of our trust funds.

One. I get married first.
Two. She gets married second.

Neither of us will see a penny until we are both “properly cared for.” My father had a terrible sense of humor.

I turn to the only man who can help me. Even when the last time I saw him he said he hated me. Even when I love him as much as I loathe him. Even when he’s all wrong.

Liar. Thief. Killer.

Those are just a few words whispered about him in back alleys. To me he’s Pierce, to everyone else, he’s Pierson St. James, local mobster and second in charge of the infamous Wild Dogs.

He may be disreputable, but desperation calls for extreme measures. A long time ago, he promised to marry me. Now I’m going to hold him to that promise.

And we are both going to regret it.

This isn’t your high school Shakespeare…and you’ve never read The Taming of the Shrew like this.

This is a standalone romance with alpha heroes, alpha heroines, and a whole lot of foul language.

Goodreads

Review by Twinsie Kelly

This is a quick read that is twisted in all the right places. The first thing that caught my eye with this is the book cover. Immediately I needed to see what this was about. On a whim I picked up Professional Liar. The characters are in the mafia and Kat is known as ‘The Shrew’. Her father was head of the five families and has passed away leaving this title to Kat. Her father has weaved an intricate web for Kat and her sister, Bianca, to receive their inheritance. Kat does what she knows best and goes about trying to manipulate Pierce into marrying her. The only thing is, they have several problems to overcome. Pierce truly loves Kat and doesn’t want his heart broken again. They also have quite the group of haters as Kat is Italian and Pierce is Irish which makes many people kill happy. While there is a web of lies and deceit ,there is also quite a bit of sassy snark with some very hawt scenes. These two truly are meant to be but both have experienced so much craziness and heartbreak because of their families and past that it is very hard to overcome. Watching the craziness unfold and the insanity that ensues made this an absolute page turner. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

#WOTR #AttendingAuthor #Novella Logan (white trash trilogy novella)by Brandy Slaven

Logan Rowe has had his fair share of waiting. Between age differences and growing up, he’s been as patient as love is supposed to be. After years of chasing Ryleigh, the time has come. She better buckle up for the ride, because he’s not stopping now until he finally claims her. Heart and Soul.

This is the first contemporary novella spin off from the RH White Trash Trilogy, which does not have to be read first, though the character cameos will make better sense if it is.

I bought this book and this is my honest opinion

Ryleigh is finally willing to give Logan the attention he wants from her after all these years. He’s had a lot of growing up to do for her to give in and agree to go out on a date with him. Once Logan has her he damn sure isn’t going to let her go under no condition what so ever. Ugh I just loved this short story even though it needed to be longer because I’m never going to get tired of this world I just love them oh so much.

#Review – The Unknown (The Unknown, #1) by J.W. Lynne

The Unknown (The Unknown, #1)

EIGHT CHILDREN WERE KIDNAPPED.
BUT WHY?

Eight kids, ages nine to seventeen, awaken to find that almost everything they have ever known has been stolen from them. They were ripped from their beds in the middle of the night and transported to an unfamiliar and unforgiving new world where there are strict rules, and they are punished if they refuse to obey.

As the kids grapple with their mysterious new reality, they struggle with disconcerting questions. Where in the world are they? Why were they taken away from their families? Will they ever get to go back home? And the most frightening question of all: Will this be the place where they die?

CYBILS AWARD NOMINEE!

Goodreads

Review by Twinsie Kelly

Unique twist on the dystopian genre! This is insanely thrilling! First, I need to say that I was a little worried about starting the story as it is told from most of the children’s POVs and there is a manifest at the beginning. I thought I would have to go back and forth to remember who exactly I was reading, but after the first few rounds through the characters I knew exactly whose POV I was reading without double checking. The characters formed in my head as if I were right there in the mix. These children are kidnapped one night and all thrown together in an unknown place. What is even weirder is that there are no adults. Nobody to tell them what to do or why they are there. The world building is great. As the children get to learn more about themselves and each other they are all learning about their new “prison”. There are so many unknowns with the story that will keep you turning the pages. Some aspects of the story definitely have the creep factor but absolutely gripping. I believe this story is the start of a really amazing series. There were so many things that you learn about the children and this new world that when you reach the cliffhanger you will be completely invested in the story. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS NEXT! This is the first book I have read by JW Lynne but I am now a fan!

J.W. LynneJ.W. Lynne writes inventive stories with twists, turns, and surprises. In ABOVE THE SKY, teens uncover the truth in a society founded on lies. In THE UNKNOWN, eight children are kidnapped in the night and wake up in a mysterious world full of secrets. In LOST IN LOS ANGELES, a young woman must decide whether to trust an intriguing young man who she meets in a coffee shop. In LOST IN TOKYO, a college student carries out her missing mother’s bucket list in a desperate attempt to finally find her. KID DOCS dives into the behind-the-scenes action at a hospital where gifted young children are trained to become pint-sized doctors. In WILD ANIMAL SCHOOL, a teen spends an unforgettable summer caring for elephants, tigers, bears, leopards, and lions at an exotic animal ranch.

#WOTR21 #AuthorSpotlight #6YearFamily – Dawn Brower

Dawn Brower

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hello, my name is Dawn Brower and I have been writing now for six years (I think…). When I was younger I wanted to be a writer, but not a novelist. My dream was to be a journalist. I don’t know when or where I gave up on that idea. Life…just happened. My father believed I’d be the next Mark Twain. I think he had high expectations (and at the time I thought he was nuts). If I had one wish, I’d have liked to have finished my first book while he was still alive. It might not be a classic by any stretch, but the fact that I finished a book would have made him proud.

I have 70+ books of various lengths available now. All romance, some historical, some time travel, some contemporary, and some romantic suspense. I like to play in a lot of sand boxes. Most of my books fall into some realm of historical though.

I live in Michigan, and have most of my life (one year I lived in Florida. That was the year hurricane Andrew hit and it freaked my mother out. We moved back to MI two weeks later.) For the most part I love it here, but I hate winter. To be more precise…I hate snow. I can deal with the cold. Snow makes me cranky in my advanced age.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

This one depends on the book(s). Some the first is harder, because it takes more research, and planning. You need to organize what you’re going to do and outline the plan as much as possible. It’s not harder to write, but harder in the sense its more work initially. Some books start out with only one book in mind and they spin into a whole series. Writing that book opens your mind up to other possibilities. Then some books, that come later, it’s like pulling teeth to get the characters from point A to point B. It’s not a this or that sort of answer for me.

What comes first? The plot or characters

The plot mostly, but the characters play a huge part in how it forms in my mind.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

At one time I would have said Karen Marie Moning. I used to devour everything she wrote, and I went to many events that involved her. She is the reason I’m close to a select group of people. I met them because of her. Now? This is hard because I’ve met so many authors I look up to. I think Nalini Singh. She’s one of my favorite authors I have not yet met yet.

If you could ask that author three questions about their writing, writing process, or books, what would they be?

What sparks your imagination? When will Bluebell get a book? Do you need a beta reader? I volunteer as tribute. 😉

What is harder? The blurb writing, naming the book, or naming the series.

The blurb. I hate, hate, hate blurbs. I actually enjoy naming things lol.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

That feeling after finishing my first book. It was exhilarating. There was a time I thought I would never have the patience to write an entire book, and the fact that I did, still amazes me. Now 70+ written works later…that still leaves me with a heady feeling.

What is your definition of success?

Meeting my deadlines… Writing is rewarding, but let’s be honest…it helps that people actually buy my work so I can keep writing. Every book is a new sense of stress and praying that people will like it. Would it be nice to hit it big? Yes. But it’s important to me that I put out good stories and that people enjoy them. I’m all right with my place in the world.

#WOTR21 – #Review – It’s a Wonderful Midlife Crisis (Good to the Last Death #1) by Robyn Peterman

It's A Wonderful Midlife Crisis (Good To The Last Death, #1)

A Paranormal Women’s Fiction with a bit of class, and a lot of sass, for anyone who feels like age is just a number!

Whoever said life begins at forty must have been heavily medicated, drunk, or delusional.

Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good.

But as they say, all good things come to an end. I’d honestly love to know who ’they’ are and rip them a new one.

One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed and breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job—deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there. I think they need my help, but since I don’t speak dead, we’re having a few issues.

To add to the heap of trouble, there’s a new dangerously smokin’ hot lawyer at the firm who won’t stop giving me the eye. My BFF is
thrilled with her new frozen face, thanks to her plastic surgeon, her alimony check, and the miracle of Botox. And then there’s the little conundrum that I’m becoming way too attached to my ghostly squatters… Like Cher, I’d like to turn back time. Now.

No can do.

Whatever. I have wine, good friends, and an industrial sized box of superglue. What could possibly go wrong?

Everything, apparently.

All in all, it’s shaping up to be a wonderful midlife crisis…

Goodreads

Review by Twinsie Kelly

This is a fun and quirky story about Daisy’s midlife crisis. Here she is tooling along in life and suddenly becomes a widow..that’s not the funny part, I promise. Things go haywire at her job and now she sees dead people. OMG, how sixth sense is that?! Her grandmother tries to explain things but Daisy finds herself fumbling along trying to figure out what it is she is supposed to be doing. These ghosts won’t go away, their parts are falling off and she is gluing them back on, she can’t get any work done, and she has an amazingly sexy man that keeps pushing himself into her life. Oh, but wait! There’s more! We find out some secrets about her husband too! This book is a riot! “Midlife was more than a series of crises. It was a freaking destination, and the ride was seriously bumpy.” While some of it was a bit corny, it was seriously funny and definitely heart-warming. I really needed a pick me up and something different from the usual paranormal romance-y type stuff. This was just what I needed. Bravo, Robyn! I look forward to continuing this journey!
