#twinsiefortheday – The Children’s Game by Max Karpov

A frighteningly plausible, fast-paced thriller about a Russian cyberattack on America, involving fake news and anonymous hackers.

The CIA has learned that the Kremlin is about to launch a sophisticated propaganda operation aimed at discrediting and disrupting the United States and ultimately restoring Russia to great nation status. Intercepted intelligence suggests that the operation will hinge on a single, breaking news event in Eastern Europe, supported by a sustained campaign of disinformation and cyberattacks. Code-named the “Children’s Game”–a chess stratagem that leads to checkmate in four moves–it was probably conceived by a Russian billionaire and former FSB officer named Andrei Turov. For years Turov has been developing the infrastructure for a new kind of warfare that exploits weaknesses in western democracies and manipulates public opinion. His organization offers the Kremlin plausible deniability.

But the United States has its own secret Christopher Niles, a former CIA intelligence officer, who understands Turov’s ambitions and capabilities. It falls to him and his small team–composed of his journalist half-brother Jon, a special forces operative he would trust with his life, and Anna Carpenter, a resourceful US senator with deep roots in the intelligence community–to unravel Turov’s plot and restore truth to a world spiraling into chaos.

The Children’s Game is a frighteningly realistic, timely thriller that delves into the secret corners of Vladimir Putin’s Russia, exploring the shifting world order and the murky realm of US-Russia relations.

I received this book for an honest review.

Espionage
The devil is in the details, and they can be so easy to miss. The beginning of this book has a lot of players
as the lies beginning to hit the news and a lot of half-truths, so you need to pay a bit of attention to who
is hinting at what to try to figure out if they really know anything.
The phrase “noise at the expense of comprehension” caught my attention and stuck with me through
the book. I feel like this quote really is the heart of the beginning of Russia’s plan, and it really strikes
true in our current media as well. So much is put out there by so many different people that it can be
hard to find the truth. It’s a little chilling how true this story could become.
This book is a clever twist of espionage, lies, twisted patriotism, half-truths told to reporters, and how
easy it is to sway public opinion. The other things this book highlights is how hard it is to get people to
believe the truth after they believe the lies, and how far people are willing to go to hide what they have
done. Once a lie goes “viral” your life could be over even when the truth comes out or you can become a
hero only to fall just as fast. Russia has become a master at helping stories go viral, and pumping
disinformation to the public, and when key people have secrets to protect it can take too long to get to
the truth.
The end of the book seems to linger just a bit, but stick with it because Russia’s master mind had one
last little lie that you don’t know about until the end. Kudos to the author for the hidden fourth move.
There is no explicit adult content, and there is a bit of violence.

I received this book for an honest review.

This set is a sweet romance series set in one town. The stories are mostly no adult content, more of a
you know what is going on, but you don’t know the details, until the last story which gives just a bit
more.
The first book Kiss at the Cove gives some background while introducing us to Prudence Parker and her
aunt. Prudence is a wedding planner that is seriously dedicated, and her older aunt owns a chocolate
shop. Aunt Ruby is such a character, and even owns a parrot. We are also given some background on
Corsair’s Cove and its lively stories of pirates and ghosts that are part of the town’s history. Pru literally
runs into a new scientist in town and ends up getting his help on some last-minute wedding issues.
When family tragedy strikes will they be able to rely on each other, will they run, or will a ghost find a
way to match make from the beyond?
Book two Kiss In The Wind introduces us to Livy Tarbert, a food chemist, that moves back to the cove to
help with the chocolate shop. She’s got some interesting ideas for some new chocolate creations that
might give some people cause to pause. Then there is Mack, the tavern owner, who is trying to find new
ideas for improving the town but not everyone on the town council is willing to agree to his plans. They
both must make a decision about taking a risk on love and there is a chance that a ghost may be helping
them along.
In book three Kiss On The Beach we meet Jamie, a carpenter, and Brynn. Brynn is the only cousin with
no interest in helping to run the chocolate shop and even wants to sell her share as she a CFO of a big
company. The only trouble is that when she shows up in town, the lawyer is busy playing pirate for the
weekend. Jamie has had a crush on Brynn for years and decides to try to show her what she’s been
missing. In the end Brynn must decide if she wants the big fancy job with the corner office or a life of
love in a small town.
The final book in the series Kiss In The Dark is really interesting. We meet the last of the cousins Eloise
and discover that she is sensitive to spirits and has dealt with some nasty, vindictive ghosts in the past
that have left her very careful of what goes on around her. We also get the interesting back story of the
ghost that haunts the chocolate shop, and how he must find love for all of the cousins. Eloise does not
make this easy for him at all. We also learn that not only have ghosts been involved in the town, but so
have witches and Captain Blackthorne is knee deep in the middle of it all. When Blackthorne decides
that no mortal man is worthy of Eloise things really get interesting.
There is also a short story at the end called Kiss at the Alter. This is a short story about the couple from
book 1 and what happens on their wedding day. There is a little dash of ghost meddling and of course
family meddling. It’s interesting and sweet. It also sets it up for a branch series.
I really enjoyed this set, and the history of Corsair’s Cove. Each book is not very big, and I finished the
whole set in one weekend, but I also read really fast. The world building is excellent, and the characters
are well developed. The family grows and changes as each character is introduced, and the cousins learn
how to work together and be a family. Over all an excellent overreaching arch that each individual book
ties into well.

#YA #sciencefiction #twinsiefortheday –  A Measure of Serenity by Bryan Prosek

A million thoughts, but only one right thing to do.

Eighteen-year-old Serenity Ashdown has a brilliant mind: she counts, calculates, and analyzes everything, all the time. Awkward. When her father suddenly disappears, Serenity follows his trail to a parallel dimension. The feds on the other side claim to want to help her go home, if she helps them reconstruct the right codes for the portal between worlds. But it’s soon clear they want something more: a gateway for invasion, because this version of Earth is dying.

When Serenity learns that her alter-ego was killed in battle, she assumes “the other Serenity’s” identity and uses her unique abilities to lead the resistance in a mortal fight against the tyrannical super-government that is poised to invade her universe. Serenity has no idea how to be someone she’s not, but she has to try–or she may not have a home to return to.

I received this book for a review.

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve posted but this was a good story to come back for. I don’t get
the chance to review many audio books so of course I had to check this one out.
To start with I must say the narrator is excellent. She does a really good job with different inflections for
different voices and helping give the characters their own speech patterns. It’s very easy to listen along
and pick out who is talking.
The story itself is very interesting. The world building is very good, and it felt a bit reminiscent of the
show the Fringe. There is a reality parallel to ours and it is similar but not the same as ours. Where we
focus on a balance of things with our resources, they have focused on war leading to some interesting
differences.
The characters are also very well developed and take you through a range of experiences that draw you
in. Serenity is a very logical thinker and analysis everything all the time which leads to some anxiety in
some situations as to what is the best course to take as she weighs the odds as to what is the best result
and struggles to act in situations that require quick thinking. However, when it comes to studies and lab
tests this serves her well and she excels. While this may sound like you will get bored, I assure you this is
far from the truth. The author does an excellent job keeping things from sounding analytical and instead
you get Serenity’s emotions and deeper thoughts instead of boring analysis.
Overall, I think this story has earned it’s full 5 stars as you are drawn into Serenity’s worry about her dad
and his work and then into a whole new world. As she fights to find her dad and uncovers the truth
about his work things are not as simple as just going home. She makes new friends and grows into a
different person who knows her worth and what she is fighting for. I would recommend this for anyone
ages 15+ and just a bit of a warning there is a slight cliff hanger at the end. I am really looking forward to
a book 2.

Along with his first two novels, The Brighter the Stars and A Measure of Serenity, he has published books and articles in legal trade journals and magazines. When he isn’t writing or practicing law, you can probably find him watching dystopian and science fiction movies or television shows. He loves the big screen and the small screen. There’s a good chance that he’ll be watching one of the numerous Star Trek movies or series, but he could be watching anything from Guardians of the Galaxy to The Conjuring.

#WOTR24 #NewRelease #Review – Rhythm (Rocky Mountain Rockstars #3) by: Jade C. Jamison

He’s a quiet drummer who avoids relationships.
She’s an outspoken tattoo artist who only wants to have a little fun.

Claire has been commissioned to design a logo for Adrian’s band Intent to Murder, but she’s had her eye on the sexy drummer for a while now. The guy is hotter than Death Valley and unlike any of the a-holes she’s dated in the past.

Not that it matters…because Claire doesn’t plan on nurturing a relationship. She just wants to get this cutie out of her system.

Good luck with that. Adrian’s not willing to pursue any sort of relationship, just for fun or not. But the chemistry between them can only be ignored for so long…

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the Rocky Mountain Rockstars series.  I could not wait to read about the quite drummer, Adrian, and the amazing tattoo artist, Claire.

Intent to Murder ask Claire to design a logo for the band. Claire and Adrian see sparks fly but both hold back. Adrian doesn’t date due to things that happened in his past. Claire has issues with trust due to her past and parents. I loved when these two are together but when they let their paranoia get in the way things go astray.

I liked that not only did we get to see Claire and Adrian navigate their friendship to more than that relationship but we get to see the other band members. I enjoyed that we get to see more of the inside workings of the band like their thought process for the possible tours and merchandising.  This was more than a love story but also a journey through an entire bands livelihood. I cannot wait for more of this series. I love the band members and the ones they fall in love with.

Review by Brandy

Hi everyone, I’m back with a new review and this time it is a little different than my usual book genre,
but I like to mix things up here and there. I would recommend this book for older teens and up. There is
no explicit content but there are some hunting related scenes that might upset younger readers.
I think this book is interesting and I did enjoy thinking about what it was like for early people to try to
tame wild horses. Before this book I didn’t really think about people using horses for food as a regular
occurrence as in my thoughts it was only something that would happen as a last result due to horses
now being considered valuable. So, I did have to stop and think about that for a moment, and it does
make sense as the wild horses would have been more abundant than they are now.
This story follows Naya, a teen girl who is the daughter of the chief of her clan. She is a bit of a tom boy
and other people in the clan look down on her a bit for it. She comes up with the idea of trying to tame a
horse and while she is with a herd of horses there is an accident that changes everything. As she is
dealing with the aftermath, she becomes friends with a boy who tries to help her with the horses.
Unfortunately, her actions change the lives of her mother and father, possibly for the worse as the chief
has enemies waiting for any chance to take away his influence and power.
While I liked the book, I think the pace was a bit slow here and there and it kept me from being really on
the edge of my seat in some of the tenser situations. The ending has a bit of a cliff hanger, but you can
kind of see where the story is heading. The book was smaller than what I thought it was as there is a
section in the back where the author talks about what methods she used to research for this book as
well as translations and descriptions of uncommon terms.

Starboard, Anchored Book 1 by Sophie Stern

I purchased this book.

I love a good sexy Sophie novella.  Ya want something quick and fun to read?  Sophie has all the novella choices a girl could ask for.

I grabbed this one after reading a spin off story called The Bratty Dom.  This book is the start of a series of 6 books.  The Bratty Dom was after the series was complete.  I met Christina and Zach in that story and of course needed to know who they came to be amazing support for Raider.

Zach was broken hearted and over relationships thanks to his crazy ex-wife.  A lawyer in his day job, he has a friend bring his to Anchored to relieve his stress.  Anthony was also hoping to help his friend dip his toes back into the life.

Christina is the Damsel of the Dungeon. She is a great sub and wonderful play partner but is very closed off.  Zach sees her and is instantly interested in this beautiful woman.  Christina doesn’t want to share her heartbreak with everyone.  She is there to get what she needs even though by not following protocol she is doing more damage than good.

The story of these two is powerful.  Zach and Christina are both so scared, but Zach pushes himself out to try and help the woman who is invading all of his thought and possible future dreams.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

I adored this book. I enjoyed seeing the Scottish brothers again. This is the perfect mix of small-town community, family, struggle, love, and humor.

Chloe is trying to start over as a single mom and town baker. She worked hard to make it the city but when she realized her daughter is more important than her big city job she decides to do something about it. When Chloe gets a break as the new baker in town but with the help of Honeybun she does a smash up job. Chloe cannot get a break and feel she is failing her daughter.

Malcom portrays the stoic banker. When he tries to embarrass his brother on his birthday the table is turned and it is he that ends up with cake in his face when he has a run in with the new baker.

The chemistry between these two is electric. Neither wants to admit it. It takes time to sift things out and for them to get to know each other. My heart flutters when I see the things Malcom does for Chloe and Hailey. The interactions between him and Hailey and Honeybun for that matter made my heart do flips for him. I so enjoyed seeing Malcom’s Gram and Da again. Grams puns are so cute and I love seeing them pop up here and there.  To see the brothers have their teasing and playful moments was touching. I love how close the entire family is. Mess with one you mess with all.

The times Chloe and Malcom are together are special and heartwarming although a few bumps in the road they are there for each other and the family. I love the little things Malcom does for Chloe and Hailey. I have to say Honeybun stole my heart. I cannot wait to read more of this series all these brothers need to find their other half.

#MM #Sports #HockeyRomance- Bad Pucking Timing (Colorado Bulldogs Book 1): A Steamy MM Hockey Romance by Michele Lenard

The ice is my happy place. My sanctuary. The source of my happiest memories, and the promise of my future. It’s also the reason I’m living a lie.

There’s no better feeling than holding another man in your hand while he comes undone.

Smooth skin wrapped around rigid muscle, a tantalizing mixture of soft and hard that pulses like a heartbeat within your fist. Grunts, moans, and breathless curses are uttered in cadence with the rapid rise and fall of his chest. Strained tendons in his neck.

I’ve yet to see a sexier sight than a man in the throes of his release. The only thing that tops it is when I’m the one who gives it to him.

It’s intoxicating… powerful . For just a moment, I’m in complete control. He’s placed something as sacred as his pleasure in my hands and trusted me to satisfy his needs.

Maybe it’s the fact that men are big and hard that makes watching them fall apart so sexy. Or maybe I just like seeing them vulnerable because society says we shouldn’t be. Whatever the reason, I’m hopelessly drawn to men. Have been since I first learned what attraction was. But that’s my dirty little secret. One that could cost me my shot at the NHL if it comes out.

That’s why he is so dangerous. My lifelong dream is within reach, and now there’s another I want to pursue. If only it weren’t such bad pucking timing.
