#WOTR23 #Authorspotlight – Shannyn Schroeder

Shannyn Schroeder

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I write steamy contemporary romance set in Chicago. I have multiple series surrounding big Irish-American families. I like writing about essay families both the ones we have bye blood and by choice. I also write heist romances as Sloane Steele. I am a mom of 3 mostly grown people, I work as a curriculum writer and part-time English teacher and executive functions coach.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The hardest part about the first book is setting up the world – which for me, means figuring out who all the siblings are. But that’s the fun part. It’s harder as the series goes on because I never know how much to include about past couples and things that happened. It’s a fine line of making new readers aware of things without boring the readers who have been there since the beginning.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I try to play with different tropes and if I’m not feeling it, I’ll write something else for a while. That’s how I ended up writing a heist romance series. Then I was happy to jump back into my Chicago neighborhood families.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Find other writers. If you have a supportive partner or family (I haven’t), they don’t really get what it’s like to be stuck or to be excited when you unravel a plot point. Other writers get it. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my writer friends at Chicago-North Romance Writers and my Panera supper club pals.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

That’s a total crap shoot. It depends on where I am in the writing process, but I try for at least an hour a day. Because of my day jobs, that doesn’t always happen, so then I do more on the weekends.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I don’t hide that Jimmy O’Malley is my favorite hero. He’s overprotective and bossy as the oldest sibling in his family. He’s not much of a talker, so of course, I paired him with his best friend’s sister who does nothing but talk. Jimmy and Moira were my first grumpy-sunshine pair (although I didn’t think about that at the time) and they will always be special to me.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I could do this all day because I create a collage for each book before I start writing. I use actors as placeholders for each character. The book I am currently working on (In Fine Form – The Doyle Family #2) the hero, Declan would be played by Nico Tortella (who played Josh on the TV Younger) and Renee would be played by Hayley Atwell (who played Peggy Carter)

What is your definition of success?

As a writer, success means having readers who look forward to my next book. When people have me on their auto-buy list, that’s a sign of success.

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

If anyone wants to try my books, I always have at least 3 books free – the first from 3 different series.

#WOTR23 #AuthorSpotlight – Heather Young-Nichols

Heather Young-Nichols

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Heather Young-NIchols is a USA Today Bestselling author of contemporary and paranormal romances. A native of the great and often very cold state of Michigan, she is better known at home and to her friends as the Snarker-in-Chief. A job she excels at beyond anything she could have imagined. She loves many things, but especially cold coffee, hot books, and baseball. But not necessarily in that order.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I think all of the books in a series pose special problems. The first book because you really need to create something that makes people want to keep reading. This is an issue with the following books as well. But I also think that the more you get to know your characters it does become a little easier.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

My contemporary books are a series of standalones so it’s easier to stay fresh when you have new characters. With the paranormal books that revolve around the same couple, you get throw in more bad guys to keep things moving and keep them exciting.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

I’m not the best for advice on emotions. As a Gen X member, we weren’t really allowed to show emotions growing up so I’m very good at keeping mine well hidden. I’d say, rest and doing something else relieves the stress. Walking away when you need to.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

My writing block is about two and a half hours Monday through Friday. However, my writing goal is one chapter a day Monday through Friday. So if I do that in less than the tie alloted, sometimes I move on to other things, and sometimes I keep writing. It just depends.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Ugh. It’s literally like asking who my favorite child is. I love them all equally. Just in different ways. If I had to choose one, most days, I’d probably say Gemma Diamati from Love by the Rules because she’s awsome and a badass but I’m pretty sure she’s the one I put through the most. Sorry, Gemma.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

That’s hard because some of my characters are inspired by real actors or musicians. For example, Cross was inspired by Rian Dawson from All Time Low. I was at their concert, literally watching them play, when I got the idea for the Courting Chaos series. Can he act? I don’t know.

What is your definition of success?

My definition of success is having people that I don’t know who want to read my books. I know. That’s the easy answer but that’s all I ever wanted when I started this. In my eyes, I was successful the first time I sold a book that wasn’t to a friend or family member.

#WOTR23 #authorspotlight – Sarah Zolton Arthur

Sarah Zolton Arthur

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi. I’m Sarah Zolton Arthur. I live in Michigan with my two sons, and I write steamy books. The steamier the better. You might get a ménage but the couples are singular. I don’t write RH or love triangles because I don’t read those myself. And my readers always know that no matter the wild ride they go on to get there, you’ll always find some form of HEA at the end. Besides writing, this year is different because my baby is graduating high school in May so we’ve been doing all the college visits and whatnot. I’m sitting here freezing as I write this because it’s almost December in Michigan and I only drink frozen coffees, which, I pretty much live on. I’m so excited to be attending my first WOTR in July. When I saw the charity that they support I knew I had to be a part of this wonderful event. My motorcycle club books specifically deal with empowering women, helping them to leave abusive situations and escape trafficking. It felt like fate brought us together.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The consecutive books in a series are harder to write. You have to make sure you’ve kept up the continuity of the people and the world you’ve created along with making sure not to repeat themes and situations so the readers don’t get bored. And my MCs for example, are romantic suspense. It’s not easy to keep the suspense brewing without becoming repetitive.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I watch the news to see what I can use and turn into a fictional story. The truth can be wilder than imagination.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

After I’ve finished an emotional story, I change it up with something else. That’s why I write rom-coms, too. They’re my outlet. You don’t write rom-com, try PNR. The point is to give yourself something else fun and less draining to focus on.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I probably spend five of my eight hour work day actually writing. The rest is spent dealing with the business side of publishing.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I have two. The first is Bossman from my MC series the Brimstone Lords MC. His jokes and fun personality in conjunction with his intensity when it comes to protecting his family, along with his Kentucky accent are based off my late husband as a shoutout to him and so many of the reasons I married the goof. The second is in the latest book in my Bedlam Horde MC series: Devil to Pay. The female lead is named Aja. She’s tough but kind, and she’s not ashamed of the things she’s had to do in her life to survive. And she’s done a lot. She’s a fighter. In a time where we hear all these angry men talking smack about women, “if she has a high body count she’s worthless,” Aja is like, sit down little boy. She doesn’t have time for that BS as no one should. She was so refreshing to write.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Oh man, that’s so difficult because I don’t watch a lot of television or movies. Who is a new version of a mid-twenties Paul Walker? Because that would be Lennon McCartney from Skydiving, Skinny-Dipping & Other Ways to Enjoy Your Fake Boyfriend. I’d love to hear the responses.

What is your definition of success?

Success is being happy with your life. Doing what you love to do and knowing that by doing it, you are bringing joy to others. I recently found out that I’m a book club. Am I a Richie Richerton? Ha! Not even close. But that book club hasn’t just read one of my books, they read all of my books. Would I like to be a Richie Richerton? Who wouldn’t? But I still consider myself a success. How many people can say they are a book club?

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

We live in a binging world. People want it all right now. What readers have to remember is whether an author is traditionally or indie published, the ability to put out the next book in a series comes from readers reading what’s already available. If you wait to read a series because you want them all at once, you risk not getting the rest of the series. It’s hard to have to wait for that next book, I know. I’m a reader, too. Just remember the anticipation makes it worth the wait!

#WOTR23 #authorspotlight – Dylann Crush

Dylann Crush

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Dylann Crush and I write steamy contemporary romance that will make you laugh, cry, and fall in love. In addition to writing, I co-host Romance Happy Hour twice a month where we chat with romance authors. I also run Book Box Babe where readers can pick up the Romance Happy Hour Book Box or booklover t-shirts.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Writing a book is hard no matter what, but I think the first in a series is more difficult. The first book has to do so much: set up the series, introduce all of the characters, and provide enough of a hook so that readers will want to keep reading through the rest of the series.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I’m a plantser which means I plot enough of my book to give myself guideposts on big plot points I need to hit, but also leave it open enough for my characters to surprise me. There’s nothing like having a new character or situation appear on the page that I didn’t see coming.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Make sure you keep refilling the well. Writing does take a lot out of authors so it’s important to make sure you’re experiencing all the feels on a regular basis.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

It depends on what I’m working on at the moment. I tend to track word count instead of time spent writing. If I’m drafting, I often try to hit at least 3k words a day which can take anywhere from a couple of hours to several depending on how well the words are flowing.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite kid. Some of the characters who have come most easily to me are Cassie and Robbie from Sweet Tea & Second Chances. I also really enjoyed writing Presley from the Holiday, Texas series and can’t wait to write Vaughn’s story from the Whiskey Wars series.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I feel like I pretty much picture Chris Hemsworth or Henry Cavill as most of my heroes. LOL. I’d love to see one of my books made into a movie someday. Maybe Sweet Tea & Second Chances with Henry Cavill as Robbie and Kristen Bell as Cassie.

What is your definition of success?

Writing books that readers are excited about and can’t wait to read is my definition of success. My goal with my books is to provide an escape for readers… a safe place where love always wins and they’re guaranteed a happily ever after.

#WOTR23 #AuthorSpotlight – Vinni George

Vinni George

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Vinni George! I’ve been a romance reader since I snuck one of my grandmother’s Harlequins when I was in middle school. I started working in the industry as an editor and still edit for others, even though I’ve started writing my own stories. I write MM/LGBTQ contemporary and shifter romance (both with and without MPREG), and I published my first novel, Hold the Door, in April 2021. Hold the Door was a finalist and runner-up in Gay Contemporary Romance in the 2020-2021 Rainbow Awards. Outside of writing, I’m a title-holding burlesque performer and pin-up model, and I love to cook and travel. I live in Ohio with my husband and son.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The subsequent books in a series are always harder for me. The first book has the benefit of being exciting and new, and there’s a certain kind of energy that fuels that.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

When I writing a series, I usually map out the main chat for each novel and the tropes and general meet-cute scenarios at the beginning so I know where I’m heading and know how things are going shake out and that I won’t be replicating the same thing over and over again. For me, a sense of place is really important, so I make sure the settings are changing, even if the location of the story doesn’t. That kind of world-building keeps me excited and engaged.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

My biggest piece of advice is to just do it. Write every single day even if it’s a haiku or a journal entry. I have a piece of art on my wall that says, “Create something today, even if it sucks,” and those are words I live by.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Since I’m also a full-time editor and full-time mom, I usually get only two to three hours of solid writing time in…if I’m lucky. But I prioritize my writing early in the day, so I know I’ve put words on the page even if the wheels fall off the bus for the rest of the day.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Absolutely, without a doubt, my favorite character that I’ve written is Hank, a.k.a Summer Sausage, the aging drag queen from Revolving Door, book two in my Open Doors series. He was based heavily on several friends in the drag community and the late, great Leslie Jordan. He’s a side character but a scene stealer, and he’s just the best.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

This is a really hard question. I’m really bad at finding celebrity face casts for my characters. Outside of Leslie Jordan, who would have been the ONLY choice to play Hank from Revolving Door, I’m just not sure.

What is your definition of success?

Oof. my definition of success has changed a lot over the years, and I feel like it’s something that is constantly evolving for me. I used to work in sales for a big three publisher, and then, my definition of success was always reaching some external quantifiable number or percentage. Since I’ve left the corporate world my definition of success is more about happiness and being able to balance the various facets of my life so I feel all are getting the attention they deserve. Some days I feel really successful and other days not so much, but on the whole, I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and that feels pretty darn successful.

#WOTR23 #Authorspotlight #Attendingauthor – Siera London

Siera London

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hello Twinsie Girls! Siera London here. After 23 years in the United States Navy, I retired and started writing my first romance novel.

I loved my career as a nurse practitioner and serving my country, but I don’t miss that life.

My kids are grown, the grandkids are a blast, and my cat is my favorite writing partner. Since the release of my debut novel, Chasing Ava on March 30, 2015, I’ve written forty books.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Setting up the first book in a series is by far the hardest. For me, crafting each character so they resonate with book lovers is key to the success of the first release and each book that follows.

Of course, I want readers to love the protagonist, but it’s equally important to feel a bit of intrigue for the other characters, too.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Huh, this is an interesting question. Like the people in our lives, characters are nuanced, their stories are unique to them, and their past experiences shape their perspective.

As a writer, each story is a challenge to share a universal journey in a creative and relevant way. In my latest Lunchtime Chronicles release, Peaches and Cream, the heroine is on the run, but she works as a migrant worker to stay under her pursuer radar.

Again, giving Empress a familiar backstory (damsel in distress) but, a non-conventional job (migrant worker) twists an old trope in a new direction.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Take a break when YOU need it! I know the currency of today’s writers is to write every day, but I don’t. And that’s okay.

Honestly, I give myself permission to manage my writing day my way. Accept your process as the best process. It may change; that’s fine, too. Storytellers must let their imaginations run free to devour great content and excellent media. It’s essential to fill your creative well. To do this, we need rest, relaxation, exercise, and to consume good stories on the regular.

So, binge-watch television, and listen to audiobooks when you feel like cracking a book open. In other words, getting the words out of her head is the right way… the best way for you. Different is okay.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Three to four hours. That’s enough to get 2000-5000 words on the page and allow my body time to recover.

 If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Oh, I would love to see the Men of Endurance on the big screen. To start on want Brad Pitt, Sam Elliott, Dwayne Johnson, Angela Bassett, Regina King, and Eva Marcille on the set.

What is your definition of success?

A growing catalog of stories that appeal to a growing number of readers who share and review my books. I want connect with readers who want to know me in addition to enjoying my books. Success to about building a career where the my readers share the journey with me.

#WOTR22 #Character Interview – Steel MC Montana Charter with one of the authors Michel Prince

Twinsie Angie and Twinsie Melinda are super excited Michel Prince talked to Red and the other members of the Steel MC Montana Charter.  They are being allowed to tour the clubhouse and talk with the members plus their ol’ ladies for the afternoon.

~~~~~~
Angie drives her car slowly through town to see everything she has read about in the books.
Melinda stares out the window and smirks, “Need gas?  I see a certain gas station ahead.  Oh look.  I think the mechanic is on duty.”
Snaping her head to look out Melinda’s window “GUUURLLL Don’t tempt me! But I do not want to be late to the clinic to meet Red, Nova, and Michel.” Angie replied with full sass.
“You are so not gonna keep your cool when he is around.” Melinda says while laughing.
“Girl, again I don’t think you should be talking because a certain someone I know you love will be at the clinic getting his ol’ lady after work.” Angie says while she smirks at Melinda.
Melinda rolls her eyes and says “Whatever. I can keep my drooling under control. “
“Riiiight” Angie replies with a full eye roll.
Angie parks her car at the clinic.  Both ladies enter the clinic.  They See Red and Nova talking quietly with their heads down.  Preacher Girl is rubbing her belly while snuggling with Hack who is counting down the last few minutes until she is off work. Lil Mama is corralling the twins while Cass is laughing at his son who must have repeated a word not allowed while rocking Maddox on his hip.  Michel is sitting and typing all of this down frantically on her laptop. She is trying to get it all down before she forgets and can’t share it with her co-author, Wren.
Melinda sighs. She looks at Hack and Preacher Girl longingly.  Hack gives a slight smile and Preacher Girl a wave since they both know her obsession with him.  They continue their discussion.
 “Tritan,” Hack said.
“No,” Preacher Girl replied.
“Carmelida,” Hack received a hard glare from Preacher Girl. “Fernado, I’ll sing ABBA during the delivery.”
“Wait,” Angie whispered to Michel. “Are they having twins?”
“No, but they are having a surprise,” Michel added. “So Hack is tormenting her because she refuses to find out.”
“So you don’t know either?” Melinda asked only to get a mischievous smirk from Michel.
Michel yells “ Ok guys can we head over to the Clubhouse.  I hear Maggie is making those Lemon Bars.  Before Baldy eats them all, I want to try one.”
Angie slightly whimpers at his name and the thought of seeing him.
“You need a napkin? Mop? Are you going to be able to contain yourself? “ Michel asks.
“Doubtful.” Angie replies to Michel while walking to her car.
Melinda snorts “I mean I kept my cool.”
Michel points “Is that drool on your shirt?”
Melinda checks her shirt and rolls her eyes when she realizes Michel was messing with her and yells “ You, my friend, suck!”
Michel- “Who told? Onyx? Bounty? Baldy?”
Angie nearly breaks her neck snapping to look at her.
“Just making sure you were paying attention.” Michel winks then mumbles something under her breath.
~~~~~~

They all drive following Red and Nova on their bikes.  When they arrive at the clubhouse, it seems Red is not too thrilled his pregnant wife is taking the curves a BIT on the fast side.

Red angrily states “ Nova, keys now. I told you not to go so fast.”

Nova laughs “And I told you I was just fine.”  Ignoring Red while spinning her keys over her head to walk with the ladies, “Come on in and let’s get this party started.”

Topaz runs over to Michel.  She grabs her and hugs her. “ I am so glad you are here.  There is so much stuff to share especially about Porsche and this little girl”

Onyx walking up to Topaz and kissing her on the neck “Topaz, that isn’t our story to share. “

Topaz eye rolls and giggles at her man. “I know but Michel needs to know about it,” wiggling her eye brows “Especially if we want to sell the tickets to ya’ll stripping!”

Melinda and Angie both GASP at what Topaz says.  Both have huge, wide eyes and you can see their brains spinning at the thought of naked Steel men.

Melinda nudges Angie and whispers “We need to find out how to buy tickets before we leave.”

Angie whispers back “Damn straight we do.”

“So you know,” Michel said. “Baldy’s incorporating the cane, no reason to short the ticket holder’s a man.”

“Like all of them?” Angie asked, scanning the room taking in the mix of men currently clad in leather, jeans and ass kicking boots.

“Not all,” Topaz groaned “One’s being a stick in the mud, but I’m working with Porsche on getting him in booty shorts and crop top to walk around and collect bills.”

Topaz and Onyx look at the ladies.

Onyx grabs Topaz “Woman let’s go so they can eat.”

Topaz sighs “FINE” but as Onyx is leading her away she yells “Get some of the Lemon Bars.  Baldy has eaten like 5 already!!”

At the mention of Baldy, Angie gets weak in the knees.  Michel and Melinda both laugh at her and walk to the kitchen where Maggie is serving food.

Maggie yells over the hustle and bustle in her kitchen “Welcome ladies.  I hope you are hungry.  I made enough for an army.”

Michel replies “Isn’t that normal?”

Maggie laughs and replies “My family keeps growing and so does my cooking.”

Angie and Melinda both grab a plate and start to add food to their plate.  All of a sudden someone whispers in Angie’s ear “The Lemon Bars are so good. “

Angie tenses up because she KNOWS the voice, “Thhhhanks for the information” Angie blushes when she sees him wink, a hitch still in his step as he spins his cane, then plants it before stepping again.

Lil Bit shakes her head and says “Baldy, you are going to give her a heart attack.  Go find Beno already. He needs to eat something besides the candy Brick keeps giving him.”

Melinda Snickers “You ok there bestie? “

Angie gives a shaky reply “Yup. I am just fine.” gulping back as if no one would notice.

Lil Bit smiles. “I understand your adoration completely.” She turns and looks at Melinda. “ Ya know Hack just got here and was looking for you.  I think these two have huge egos since they found out from Michel over there they are your favorites in the club.“

Angie and Melinda both mean mug Michel and Scream in Shrill voices “ MICHEL!!!  You weren’t supposed to TELL!!!”

Michel replies laughing “Oh no way was I not telling them. Their reaction is worth their weight in gold.”

~~~~~~
The ladies and the MC all sit around the tables they’d shoved together to give enough room.
Michel, Angie, and Melinda all sit.  They watch as the group all find seats to begin their chat.
Melinda looks to Doc and Chief for the first question. “ How is the newest couple doing?”
Doc frustrated says “I’m still trying to figure out how Chief thinks shaking his money maker is going to get us a fire truck.”
Chief shakes his head “First, not my idea.”
Doc side eyed him “But you jumped at the chance.”
Chief scratching at his chin. “Porsche had a point, show some hose to get the money. Besides, I’m not the only one. Hey Angie, you comin’ by on Mother’s Day to watch Baldy swing his cane?”
Angie chokes on a lemon bar and needs a moment to compose herself. Meanwhile, Melinda laughs and is smacking her back so she won’t choke.
Baldy smirks. “Come on Ang, what song you want me to dance to? And Mel, Hack’s gonna do his part for the cause.” Melinda’s eyes go wide enough to see the back side of the moon. “I know you both are good with charity and fundraising. Five won’t get you six at this one, but a five in the right string might get you–”
Lil’ Bit yanks his long hair currently tied back into a ponytail.
Baldy looks at Lil’ Bit and says “You really want to show Angie the way to my heart?”
Angie takes several sips of water and turns her attention to Mountain and Amber. “How is the house and how have the kids adjusted everything?”
Nightingale smiles “They are loving the freedom of Ms. Meadow and being in the same class, for the most part. As for the home, I’m not sure if we’re building a house or a clubhouse.”
Mountain waves his hand “A few amenities we’ll open up for the guys.”
Nightingale puts her hands on her hips “ A gun range, pool–”
Mountain interrupts, “The pool was your idea.”
Nightingale shakes her head “But the lazy river wasn’t.”
Mountain laughs “If you’re gonna build it, do it all the first time because additions are tacky.”
Nightingale whispers under her breath “Martha Stewart was your neighbor wasn’t she?”
Mountain’s face flushes red, “No,” runs hand over his face and mumbles,  “But my mother was one of her first clients.”
Melinda looking to Free and Hollywood, “Any news to share? “
Free turns her head to the side, her face drawn for a moment until Hollywood leans over and whispers in her ear and a small smile hits the corner of her lips. –
Angie looking to Dreamer and Freaky, “How is the school and the house flips going?”
Dreamer snaps her attention to them from little Livi in the carrier rocking next to her. “School is a mix of insanity and joy. But I like the levels together, giving me freedom for one on one teaching and then the younger ones are learning above their grade.”
“Is Olivia in the classroom with you?” Angie asked.
“For now,” Dreamer said. “Can’t keep that up once she’s moving around more. But she’ll be just downstairs in the nursery with the other kiddos.”
Freaky took over rocking duty and within seconds Livi’s giggles had everyone at the table smiling.
Melinda looked to Cass and Lil Mama, “So the twins are a handful plus the new baby.  Any plans for more?“
“See, told you, everyone wants us to have more,” Cass teased, nudging Lil’ Mama’s shoulder.
“Fine, Melinda, you take the kids for a weekend and we’ll see what happens,” Lil’ Mama said taking Maddox from Cass and passing the little boy across the table. The little man’s eyes widened and arms began to flop a bit as he blew raspberries and then put a hand on either side of Melinda’s head. “See, he likes her.”
“He’s never known a person who didn’t love him,” Cass said, then turned his attention to Lil’ Mama. “Wait, babysitter, this mean we’re running away and–”
Lil’ Mama placed a finger over his lips as she softly said shhhhhh.
Angie looks at Bounty and Cream prompting Melinda to ask, “So how is everything going with Liam? In case you didn’t notice, we love the babies you all are having.”
Bounty had the same gleam in his eyes that Cass had just sported and Cream cut her eyes at him.
“Down boy,” she warned. “Liam is wonderful and I think he’s helping my mom with her fine motor skills. They work on things together. All the learning toys are practically the same.”
“Cream, how has it been having Chief back in your life?” Melinda asked with warmth at the reconciled family.
Baldy interrupts, “ So, Angie you, afraid to ask me  anything?” smiling as he sees her blush and starts to move in her seat.
Angie looks at her notepad “No, I’m good.”
Baldy laughs, “Come on, ask me anything.”
Lil Bit rolls her eyes, “Seriously go ahead and ask him.  He is going to drive you nuts until you do.”
Angie takes a big breath in and giggles, “ Ok. Has anyone held your beer lately?”
Baldy rubs his hand over his face “Thank God noone has needed to hold my beer since this lady came into my life.”
Hack looks at Melinda and states “Ok Melinda. Angie got the hot seat so now it is your turn.  What do you want to ask me?”
Melinda sitting up tall, trying to not look crazy “How is Rose doing in School?”
Hack looks confused “Really, Rose? Ok. She is adjusting well from what I can see. Took a bit academically to catch her up, but we have a bit of a brain trust that helped her get through.”
Preacher Girl smiles at Melinda. “She is loving the new life, but teenagers can be a little bit of a handful we are discovering.”
Melinda nods totally understanding
Hack looks angry “and boys are not a good thing.”
Preacher Girl sighs “Now Thomas, He just gave her a rose.  It was sweet. “
Hack grumbles “He is under surveillance as we speak.”
Melinda  giggles “Wow. Ok so you like being a dad I see,“
“I do, but I need this one to come out soon and be a boy,” he said rubbing Preacher Girl’s belly and talking to the belly. “Hear me, I need a boy because another girl might kill me.”
“You need to stop, Rose is enjoying the little bit of freedom you give her, that’s all.”
“I might need to reassess my limits,” he said. “She was raised to be grown by twelve, why can’t she just enjoy being a kid, she only had a few years of it.”
“Hack,” Baldy said as he got up and spun his cane. “Time’s a wasting.”
“Sorry ladies, when Baldy calls,” Hack then leaned across the table and scoffed at Angie. “Look who I’m telling, coming Daddy.”
Angie leans over to Melinda, “Why do I have a bad feeling about those two?”
“Because you know them,” Melinda said with a slight chuckle.
“We better go before we have to start explaining things,” Angie said.  “Thanks so much for letting us come over and hang out.”
Melinda “This has been amazing and insightful for us.”
Angie and Melinda giggle as they get up to leave and Angie asks “Uhm ladies is the Roadhouse open?  We wouldn’t mind a private preshow. I mean, we just want to make sure it’s a SOLID performance” she says while smirking.
Melinda grabs her wallet “I have lots of bills here that need a good home.”
“Michel knows we wanna help out anyone with fundraising,” Angie smirks!!
“Careful what you wish for,” Michel raises an eyebrow as Nine Inch Nails starts blaring through the stereo system and the women notice the kids had been spirited away as Closer starts to play and cane hooks a bottle of Jack sending it flying along the bar top into Hack’s hand as both men moved around the bar, cuts off and shirtless.
An undisclosed amount of money was raised that night.
C.J. Baty
Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.
CJ Baty
I’ve been writing for eight years and it was a dream I had as a young person. Unfortunately, I didn’t get started until I was in my 50’s. To date I have 20 published books and stories in several anthologies. I’ve lived in Southwest Ohio for most of my life, but my favorite place is anywhere there is mountains. I enjoy reading, playing games on my Kindle, sitting on my porch during the cooler months and spending time with my adult children. I’m also at the age where I am caring for my aged parents. No grandbabies yet but lots of wonderful fur babies and grand fur babies. Writing brings me a peace that I never knew existed. Sharing stories is one of the best things in life.
When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?
I guess the first book would be the one with the most research and work. There’s a lot of room to watch characters grow and mature when you take them through a series.
When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?
It depends on the series. The Pinkerton Man series allows me to move the characters to new locations and face new foes. The Ghost Train was fresh because each one took place in a new locale. Some series have new main characters in each book and that gets you invested in a new couple.
Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?
Gather others around you that you can talk things over with. Hash out a plot with someone. Other authors, your editor, and even readers can spark an idea that you spurs you to keep going.
On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?
I’d like to say I write for six hours every day!!!! But life doesn’t always let that happen. I usually write between two and three hours when I get started and the words are flowing.
Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.
I think that of all my characters Stiles Long from the Pinkerton Man series is my favorite. Over the course of four books (five stories), I’ve watched his character struggle with many things. He’s grown and been able to see that a future with his lover is a possibility. He didn’t believe that two men had a chance for that in the beginning. Unfortunately, the next two books in the series is going to see him really struggle and I’m excited to see how he handles the situations.
What is your definition of success?
I think we tend to base success on how many orange stars we collect, how many books we sell, or how much we made in any given month. I know that we all fall into the trap at times. The most successful I’ve ever felt was when I met a reader who was so excited to meet me, she cried. My words on paper moved someone to that. I’m just a person. But that is success, for someone to enjoy my stories.
#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – PJ Fiala
PJ Fiala
Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.
My name is Patti Fiala, but I write as PJ Fiala. It’s not much of a stretch, I know. My husband and I have been married for 36 years and have been blessed. My careers have been varied, from waitressing, to factory work, to hair stylist, to business owner then to paralegal. After many years working in the legal field, I decided to finally sit down and write my first book in 2014. That started my final career – writing/publishing. I’ve written 28 books to date and have more coming. I have story ideas that will outlive me so I just keep writing to get as many of them out of my head as I can. When not writing, my husband and I ride our motorcycles around and visit as many inspiring places as we can. We really do live in a beautiful country.
When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?
The others after it for me. I normally know how a series will start and end, but fitting all the pieces in the middle can be a challenge.
When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?
I try to add different tropes to each book in a series, which then changes up the stories. I know if I’m bored writing a story, readers will be bored reading it, so keeping it fresh is not only important, but a necessity.
Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?
You need to know this is a long game. Don’t take on all the social media to find readers – you’ll find that all it does is take up valuable writing time. Do do all the things – you’ll find tons of time wasted when you could have finished a book. Basically, pace yourself and put out the best product you can put out. Find a great team to work with you – editors, cover designers, beta readers. Over the long run, those will be the most important people in your career.
On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?
Likely only a couple of hours. The business part of this business is time consuming. The writing part of this business is draining. So, I start the day with business. If I have a book to format and upload, that gets done first. Otherwise, I can’t focus on my book. I keep thinking, “Gosh I need to get XXX done.” So, I get my business stuff done, then focus for a couple of hours on the writing. It works for me.
Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.
I hate to pick, I love them all. They’re like my children. But, I do have one that is special, and she’s that way for a reason. Jax Masters Sager, is a character I hold dear to my heart. She speaks her mind. She’s strong without being bitchy. She’s tough as nails and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. She doesn’t sit in the corner and wait to be saved, she runs in and saves others. She never second guesses herself because she’s confident as hell. She’s special, because I want to be her. Just like her.
If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?
Moving to Love’s Jeremiah Sheppard could be played by Brad Pitt. Think Brad in Legends of the Fall with the long hair and rugged look. Ford: Finding his Fire’s Ford Montgomery would be played by Liev Schreiber as he is in Ray Donovan. Doesn’t small talk, doesn’t suffer fools, and isn’t interested in gossip. Strong and silent. Saving Shelby’s Diego Josephs would be played by Bradley Cooper.
What is your definition of success?
Success for me is completing a book and hearing that readers love it. That doesn’t mean I need only praise, it just means so much goes into creating a new world, characters and situations for readers to enjoy is part of the reason I do it. The other part is that I enjoy it. To have both, is a blessing.
