#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight – B.B. Swan

B.B. Swann

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I am a married mom of three adults, three fur-babies, one granddog, and one grandkitty. I was a teacher for over 27 years. I had to leave the profession due to health issues, but I still find ways to sneak teaching into my life. I joined The Purcell Agency when I signed with my agent, Cathie Hedrick Armstrong in 2017, then became an agent myself with the agency in January of 2020. (A great time to start a new career!) I think my background in teaching had a lot to do with me becoming an agent. I love helping my clients polish their manuscripts and then finding the perfect editor to help them develop further on their path to publication. My pen name is BB Swann, but my real name is Bonnie Swanson. Some authors choose a pen name because they want to use something that fits their genre or maybe want to hide who they are so their families don’t read it and wonder how they might know so much about hiding murder or–ahem–bedroom activities. I had to change mine because if you Google my real name, the first thing you will see is a perpetually pregnant cartoon character from the show Family Guy! Not exactly the brand I am going for as a picture book/young adult fantasy author.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Great question! It depends on the series, I think. I have written two complete series so far. The Breakin’ in the 80s series is romance, but the stories pretty much stand-alone but have connected worlds. However, the final book does sort of end the series as it is the redemption story of the antagonist from book one. My Spellbound Chronicles series is a true urban fantasy series though. I feel like book three was the mot difficult to write. I’m not sure though if it was because it was the final book, or if my health issues were more to blame. I had to write it during a rough time (health wise) and it took a lot out of me. The hardest thing is making sure I tick off all the boxes and close up all the storylines. I knew where the story was going to end, but sometimes getting there takes me on a curvy path.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I love introducing new characters! Even if the mains stay the same, throwing the proverbial wrench at them with a fresh face and fresh problems to fix, or maybe a fresh ally really breathes life into the story.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Find your writing squad and support each other! Whether its with critique, beta reading, brainstorming, or just venting, a good writing group will make all the difference! Bounce ideas off each other. Share your writing. Ask questions and find the answers together. Writing is itself a solitary event, but you don’t have to do everything alone.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I know a lot of people say, “write every day,” but sometimes that’s not possible. I tend to go in spurts as an idea hits me. Some days I will write 10,000 words and others 100. Unless you have a deadline, as long as the story gets on the page, it doesn’t matter how you get it there.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

This is like asking me to pick a favorite kid. I don’t. Whichever character I am writing is my favorite at the time. They have to be.

What is your definition of success?

Being successful to me, means someone reads my story and enjoys themselves. I love to hear from readers about how my book affected them. Reviews are for readers, but authors like to see them, too. But hearing from a reader through social media, a reply to my newsletter, or even face-to-face is the best.

#review #wotr24 #attendingauthor #mmromance #agegap #partofaseries —The Barkeep and the Bro (Single Dads Club #3) by: A.J. Truman

I’m his boss. He’s my daughter’s ex-boyfriend. This has nope written all over it.

For twenty-five years, I’ve been in an exclusive, all-consuming relationship with Stone’s Throw Tavern, my family’s local bar.

I don’t need a boyfriend. What I need is a new bartender.

And what I get is Charlie, my daughter’s old college boyfriend, a guy who still acts like he’s chillin’ at the frat house. He was canned from his Wall Street job and escaped to small town Sourwood for a fresh start.

He knows bupkis about bartending, but he makes up for it with his cocky charm…and the tight shirts he wears, which secretly drive me wild. Now I’m making up excuses to hang by the bar during his shifts.

There’s a pile of reasons why I can’t cross the line with an employee. Especially this one. He’s twenty years younger than me, and I’m a foot taller than him. Even on a purely mathematical level, this can’t work.

And yet…

The growing heat between the fratboy and me burns like a shot of whiskey. I just need to keep my beer can in my pants, or else I could lose my business and my daughter.

The Barkeep and the Bro will serve you up a glass of age gap, size difference, boss/employee, grumpy/sunshine, small town romance goodness, garnished with humor and lots of heat. And it won’t even ask for ID. This is the third book in the Single Dads Club series, but can be read as a standalone.

Review by Twinsie Tenise

Mitch is looking for yet another bartender. Staffing his bar is becoming increasingly difficult as the years progress and Mitch is just… tired.
Charlie’s life is in the gutter right now, he’s staying with an old friend and needs a job like yesterday! He finds somewhere locally hiring but he’s not sure Mr. Dekker would want to hire him. You see, Charlie dated Mitch’s daughter. He also dumped Mitch’s daughter so, yeah, there’s also that.
Mitch and Charlie couldn’t hide their mutual attraction. There were multiple things standing in the way of them acting on said attraction. Ignoring it all together seems like a fantastic plan. I didn’t agree with this plan but no one asked me. Annnnnd moving on… when these 2 geniuses finally came to their senses it was fire! I was really looking forward to reading this book and it did not disappoint. Even the parts that irritated me. They were essential to their story and you gotta get through all the annoying stuff to get to the best part so I guess I liked those parts a little bit too. Whatever.

A.J. Truman remembers his college days like it was yesterday, even though it was definitely not yesterday. He writes books with humor, heart, and hot guys. What else does a story need? #WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight #eventsponsor – Molly McLain

Molly McLain

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Molly McLain. I write steamy small-town romance with blue collar book boyfriends. I also live in a little town in Wisconsin with my husband of 22 years. Our three kiddos are all adults now, but I’m still in denial about that.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The ones that come after! I like to change things up, so sticking in the same series, town, family, etc. is sometimes a struggle for my ever-bouncing brain!

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I try to incorporate tropes or situations that I haven’t written before.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Just keep writing. Stay off social media and make writing the words your number one priority ALWAYS. Do I do this myself? No. But I should, and not doing so is my biggest regret as an author.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

An hour or so. I have a day job, too, so writing isn’t always my number one priority.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Right now, no. I love them all, especially as I’m writing them, but I can’t say that I favor one over the others at the moment. They’re all special in their own ways.

What is your definition of success?

For me, it’s living a simple, comfortable life with peace of mind and a full heart. I want to know I’ve accomplished my goals and that I’ve done a good job as a mom, a wife, a friend, and an author.

#review #wotr24 #attendingauthor #mmromance #partofaseries —The Mayor and the Mystery Man (Single Dads Club #2) by: A.J. Truman

To win this election, I should be trying to kiss babies, not my best friend!

My chances of reelection have gone from slam dunk to nose dive.

What happened? A former hookup sold me out to the press, complete with screenshots. In my defense, between being mayor and parenting twins (double the puberty!), I have zero room for relationships that go beyond one night.

My campaign manager says I need to change the narrative, aka get a boyfriend ASAP to make me seem more (ugh) likeable. The only person I trust with this ruse is my charming best friend Dusty.

Despite living 3,000 miles apart, thanks to endless text chains and 2 a.m. phone calls, we’ve been the constant in each other’s lives, navigating through single dad fails (me) and breakups with cruel ex-girlfriends (all him).

Each day we spend as fake boyfriends feels more real, which is odd because Dusty is straight.

And yet our playful banter is shifting from friendly to flirty.

And he doesn’t stop holding my hand when the crowds leave.

And was he always this attractive?

With reporters sniffing for the truth, exploring these feelings could mean the implosion of my political career and our friendship.

The Mayor and the Mystery Man is book 2 in the Single Dads Club series, but can be read as a standalone. Join Leo and Dusty as they stumble toward their happily ever after!

Review by Twinsie Tenise

When a scandal comes out that could end up ruining Leo’s chance at reelection, they’ve got to come up with a plan quickly if there’s any chance of saving this thing.

The plan: Be fake boyfriends with his straight best friend Rusty to see if it could help his approval ratings.

What could possibly go wrong?
Let me tell ya, there’s a list!

Grrrr!!! These 2 frustrated me so much but I enjoyed every minute of it. Leo and Rusty were absolutely perfect for one another. I feel like EVERYONE knew this except for these 2 oblivios knuckleheads who have apparently been living in lala land for the past 2+ decades. I was a nervous wreck as I read hoping they would come to their senses before
A- More scandals are leaked, possibly worse than the first one that landed them in this predicament in the first place.
or
B- This fake relationship ended up ruining an over 20 year friendship.

I’m obsessed with this series and all of the single dads. Mitch is next! I’ve been looking forward to his story. I’m excited to see how it plays out. If anyone needs me. DON’T! I will be on the couch ignoring reality because right now, this series is way more important.

Review by Twinsie Angie

I purchased the audiobook.

The narration was amazing.  I haven’t listened to a story by either narrator but thought the killed it 8see what I did there* with the story.

My friend Kate messaged me and was like “GIRL you need this book.”  I opened Goodreads to get the blurb and was SOLD….serial killers who kill other serial killers and fall in love…DUH This is a no-brainer.8  I looked up the triggers and was like WTF list was that.  I laughed even.  But when I downloaded the book and they read the list of triggers I laughed so hard.  Like crazy hard.  I knew I was going to be in for an epic ride when the story began.

So Blackird/Sloane is caught when Butcher/Rowan finds her.  They have a bit of a chat and decide t have to “friendly” competition every year.    And this is how the delicious story begins.

Sloane is a neurotic mess and Rowan is a bit of one too.  They two of them grow to be friends and even kinda wanna be with the other…granted Rowan admits this right away in the beginning but Sloane was a little thick to get the point.

The chemistry was a slow simmer until the pot was boiling.  I was dying much like they were for “more” to happen…when I does KABOOM.  Hold on to your butts because this rocket is full throttle.  They two are soon exploring each other and what could be.

Of course we have some drama and  a mega plot twist but the story made my heart so happy.  I also am looking forward to book 2 with Lachlan and Lark.  These two are going to be a riot.  I feel like the banter will be just as amazing and Rowan and Sloane.

I didn’t think the story was super dark until about chapter 21 and I got a little squeamish BUT I have read way worse.  I will say I don’t know that I can eat Cookies and Cream ice cream again…IYKYK!!

Brynne is a fan of velociraptors, the Alien movies (well, most of them), red wine, and wild adventures. She can relate nearly anything you say to a line from the movie Hot Fuzz. She has been trying unsuccessfully for years to convince her husband that they should acquire a pet mink to add to their menagerie of animals (what could possibly go wrong with that plan?!). Brynne has been everything from an archaeologist to a waitress, a deep-sea core analyst to an advertising account executive. For the last several years, she has been working in the field of neuroscience clinical research. Brynne has been writing since childhood. When not busy at her day job or working on her next book, Brynne can be found with her husband and son on their family farm in NS, Canada, or enjoying her other passions which include riding horses, reading, motorcycling, and spending time with family and friends around a raclette and a bottle of wine.

#WOTR24 – #NewRelease #Review – Harmony (Rocky Mountain Rockstars #2) By: Jade C. Jamison

Pedro’s had a hard life.
Raised by his grandparents, he’s making ends meet.
But he has big dreams of the rockstar life.

Maria has big dreams too.
Raised by a single mother, her best bet is a college education.
It’s the only way she’ll escape Charlotte, the dead-end town in Colorado she’s lived in her whole life.

Maria’s always had a crush on Pedro, but, as her older brother’s best friend, he’s off limits.

But when Maria’s brother asks her to help their band build an audience, she and Pedro find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other.

For Maria, Pedro is just a distraction. If she doesn’t keep her eye on the prize, she’ll be stuck in small town Charlotte forever.

That suits Pedro just fine, because the closer he gets to her, the more dangerous it becomes. There’s a monster inside him…and falling for Maria might just unleash it.

Goodreads

Review by Twinsie Melinda

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

This story is about Pedro and Maria. Both are so attracted to the other but both hold back.  Maria has had a crush on her brother’s bandmate for a while but it her brother’s friend.

Watching these two dance around one another until the day they started moving to the same beat. Padro didn’t think he was capable of loving anyone they always found a way to leave him. Therefore, he was a one-night stand kinda guy. I mean really isn’t that what rockstars do. Maria starts working for the band and is around more and more. The pull these two have to one another is hard to ignore. Their past and trying to protect their hearts could put the breaks on this relationship before it really has time to develop.

This story kept me turning pages there were times I loved Padro and Maria together and there were times I was yelling at Padro the way he treated Maria. I absolutely loved Padro’s grandmother and the time we got to spend with her. I also enjoyed seeing the band members. I cannot wait for the next book I am hooked reading about the characters in the Intent to Murder band.

#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight – J. Lawson

J. Lawson profile image

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Jackie Lawson. I write under the pen name J Lawson. I’m originally from the Quad Cities; more specifically, Davenport, Iowa. I moved to the Peoria area 15 years ago. I have a master’s degree in English Literature from Western Illinois University. I’ve loved reading and writing ever since I can remember and I published my first book in 2019 with another following each year after.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I’d have to say the others after. There isn’t really a whole lot different about writing each book, except I hate having to recap the previous books at the beginning of the following books. I’ve read a lot of them where they go into far too much detail about the first book and I’ve read some where they don’t go into enough detail. I feel like finding that sweet spot is the hardest part.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Finding a balance between the book being plot driven and character driven is a great way to keep things fresh. If you stay character driven, after a few books you’ve exhausted a lot of their story and they either have to keep having exponential growth (which, I’m sorry, feels unrelatable, unrealistic, and exhausting) or the focus has to shift. When you switch the focus between the characters and the story itself, that gives you more time to develop both and keep things fresh.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

I know a lot of writers have multiple projects going at once. I can’t do that myself because I get mixed up and things begin to run together. I have, however, found that if I’m getting burnt out on a project or I’m getting stuck, journaling helps me with that. I can focus on something completely unrelated, or I can hash out the issues I’m having in a journal and sometimes I will “talk” myself into a solution through the journaling process. Don’t be afraid to step away when you need to to re-center.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

As much as my mental capacity allows. I’ve found that it’s important not to force my writing. Writing has been a catharsis for me for so many years that if I force it when I’m not feeling it, I can become resentful of it. I never want that to happen. So there are days where I’ll write for 6 hours, and then I won’t write again for several days. During the several days off, I’ll often jot down notes or ideas or things I think about, and then there comes a day where things just click and I can write out everything I’m thinking or have thought of on the days off. It’s my personal process.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Ooooo, this is a brutal question. It’s like having to choose a favorite child. In my Amulets Trilogy, I think Mama Landry will always be a favorite. There’s so much to her, yet she’s quite a secondary character. I’ve always kind of found myself drawn to secondary characters who you want to know more about. She’s definitely that. So much so in fact that I plan on doing a prequel to the trilogy that will focus specifically on her and her story. For my new paranormal fantasy series, Peculiar Lessons, I think it’s Professor Cessair, simply because, again, he’s not the main focus, but he’s a driving factor in the story. And he’s so out of touch that it’s fun to bring comedic relief to a series that can become somewhat heavy.

What is your definition of success?

Reaching a goal. Period. End of story. If you simply wanted to get out of bed today and you did, success. If you wanted to clean and all you got to was wiping down the counters, success. If you wanted to write five pages and you did, success. I find a lot of people get bogged down in the details or try to assign a “level” or “degree” of success and that’s not a thing. If you did what you aimed to do, you succeeded. People can write amazing things but then focus so much on whether they think it’s “good enough” that they never get to enjoy the success of accomplishing the goal. Just having done it is incredible!

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

I think it’s important for writers to write what THEY want to read. So many times a writer gets focused on writing what they think OTHER people want to read, and it will never come across as genuine as writing to one’s own heart.

#Review #ExtremeHorror #Novella – My Vagina Smells Like Sulfur by Sea Caummisar

My Vagina Smells Like Sulfur:
Description… The dark web has convinced people that the secret to a happy afterlife isn’t how you lived and whether you lived by the holy word. The secret to the afterlife is how you die. The more creative the death, (preferably suicide) the better your life is in the afterlife. All you have to do is record your death…. One Divinity Counselor claims that they can prove how great life is after death, complete with video of the dead person living their best life after death.

I had no idea what to expect when I started this book. I try not to read blurbs, so I did my best to go into this one blind.

We meet Madam Midnight who begins the book by torturing a woman. The things she does to this poor victim definitely left me wincing.

We end up meeting several other characters along the way and we find out that Madam works for a production company of sorts for the dark web. They do gruesome things themselves or have viewers send in home videos themselves.

The point of what Madam and her counterparts do, is to let viewers know the secret to the afterlife. It’s all in how you die.

This little book is jam packed with gruesome scenes, descriptive torture and more.

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I absolutely adore writing, even the editing! Gasp, I know shocking huh? Now to the fun stuff… I’ve been happily married for 32 years to my wonderful supporting hubby. Without his love and support I probably wouldn’t have made it this far. When we’re not touring the United States between our signings, you’ll find us in our other favorite spot… camping!

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first, by far!

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I keep things fresh by trying to visualize how I’d like to read it and by coming up unique twists and turns the readers don’t see coming. My pocket editor is great for helping in this particular area.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Take your time. It’s not a race. Take time for yourself, do the things you enjoy. And when it becomes too much, step back even if it’s only for 30 minutes. Remember our books don’t write themselves, contrary to some readers’ beliefs! We’re good, great even but the master has to be in peek performance to obtain greatness.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I spend on the average 10 plus hours writing and editing.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Ethan. He’s in my first series. He’s special to me because even with all the lies he uncovers that his father has hidden from him he still manages to show his love for his family.

What is your definition of success?

Holding each one of my book babies in my hand. Even if no one liked them (which I pray never happens) the fact will always be that I busted my butt off and brought my story to life and the proof is in my hands.
