#Review – The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum

A teenage girl is held captive and brutally tortured by neighborhood children. Based on a true story, this shocking novel reveals the depravity of which we are all capable.

This novel contains graphic content and is recommended for regular readers of horror novels.

This book. Wow this book. I saw the movie years ago, read up on it once I found out it was based off true events and haven’t had the courage to read the book until now. I have to say that I absolutely devoured this book. I couldn’t put it down and even lost sleep over it. Even though I knew what was going to happen, reading it was a whole other experience.

This book shattered my heart and soul and I was left feeling numb after. Please heed the warnings as while there are books out there that are way more graphic, there is just something about the way this one was written, that made it so much worse. Maybe it’s because it’s based off a true crime. I don’t know. But man. This book now officially owns my entire being.

The book is loosely based off the real murder of Sylvia Likens but Sylvia’s story was so much worse. But this review isn’t about that but I would love to read more about her, as a way to pay homage to her memory. Since she had no one looking out for her like Meg did in this book.

Meg and her sister Susan end up staying with their aunt and cousins after their parents die. Aunt Ruth seems cool at first but after a while, things take a drastic turn for the worse. Meg stands up for herself a little too well and ends up in the basement. Man this basement. When I got to the chapter that says something like and I’m not quoting “They ended up in the basement”. I got chills.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know what happens and I have to say that this is one of the best book to movie adaptations I’ve read since Silence of the Lambs.

Hands down this is by far my favourite book of 2025. Not because the story is great. Because it’s not. Not in the least. But the details, the story telling, hearing the story from the eyes of David, the atmosphere, everything about this book, made for an epic, depraved ride and it’s one I’ll never forget.

But I promise you, I will never read this book again.

Blake is dead. They say his wife killed him. If so… which one?

Polygamist Blake Nelson built a homestead on a hidden stretch of land—a raw paradise in the wilds of Utah—where he lived with his three wives:

Rachel, the first wife, obedient and doting to a fault, with a past she’d prefer to keep quiet. Tina, the rebel wife, everything Rachel isn’t, straight from rehab and the Vegas strip. And Emily, the young wife, naïve and scared, estranged from her Catholic family.

The only thing that they had in common was Blake. Until all three are accused of his murder.

When Blake is found dead under the desert sun, all three wives become suspect—not only to the police, but to each other. As the investigation draws them closer, each wife must decide who can be trusted. With stories surfacing of a notorious cult tucked away in the hills, whispers flying about a fourth wife, and evidence that can’t quite explain what had been keeping Blake busy, the three widows face a reckoning that might shatter all they know to be true.

Review-

The murders of four innocent college students attending the University of Idaho left us all with so many questions. Now, after more than 300 interviews, James Patterson and prize-winning journalist Vicky Ward finally have the answers.

We know what it was like to live in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022, the day of the cold-blooded killings. We know what the local police and FBI did right. And what they did wrong. We’ve learned so much about the four heartbroken families—the Mogens, Goncalveses, Kernodles, and Chapins. And we have the backstory for Bryan Kohberger, brilliant grad student, loner, apparent incel.

Now you are the jury. The evidence is in.

Review- Maddie, Kaylee, Xana and Ethan since 2022 have been names that we have all heard on our tv screens and seen all over the internet. The Idaho Four is how they are known to the world now, 4 students at the University of Idaho that were violently murdered in their home one night. Moscow would never be the same again after that night on 1122 King Road when those 4 innocent college students whose lives haven’t really begun lost their lives by the hands of a monster. See a small glimpse into who they were before the world knew their names and they were just Maddie the light of her parents’ eyes, Kaylee 1 of 5 kids in her family, Ethan a triplet with Hunter and Maizie and Xana the life of the party and always taking her older sisters’ clothes when she got the chance. Ever since this story broke these families have been in many people’s hearts and the sad part is they will probably never know why this crime took place in the crime happened. also see a small part of the killer’s life, he doesn’t need it, but it was an interesting part. Maddie, Kaylee, Xana and Ethan will never be forgotten and never should.

Jasper Nicholas is stressed to the max on Christmas Eve. His father is ill, and Jasper has to run the family’s delivery service tonight. When Jasper comes down Holly’s chimney late on Christmas Eve, she realizes Jasper is Santa Claus’s son and tasked with delivering gifts to the world’s children. All I Wank for Christmas is an irreverent, raucous romantic comedy standalone, sure to put you in the mood for a happy holiday season…no Happy Stroke Club needed.

Review- Holly was doing what she could to help out her family with her mom being sick and not able to work her dad left for milk and never came back and her little sister helping while going to school Holly’s job isn’t a normal one she’s a professional at giving hand jobs yes that’s right, definably not normal but it helps pay the bills and that’s what matters. but when a walk in comes thinking he’s getting a massage he’s definably in for one didn’t think he’d get. Jasper has eyes on Holly from the moment she left her room at her job and walked into the lobby and after his happy ending and the fact he knows more about her then he should know when never speaking to her before would be creepy for most. but when you are the heir and about to take over delivering gifts to all the kids it’s a gift of his. yes, Jasper is Santa Claus’ son and is soon to be the big man in charge. Jasper needs Holly’s help on the biggest night of his job, will she believe him and help or just think it’s all a dream, twist turns and if she helps, they might end up in a sex dungeon. oh, this is one night nether one will forget.

In the latest jaw-dropping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Riley Sager, a man must contend with the long-ago disappearance of his childhood best friend—and the dark secrets lurking just beyond the safe confines of his picture-perfect neighborhood.

The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul de sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again.

Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. Someone seems to be roaming the cul de sac at odd hours, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in Ethan’s backyard. Is someone playing a cruel prank? Or has Billy, long thought to be dead, somehow returned to Hemlock Circle?

The mysterious occurrences prompt Ethan to investigate what really happened that night, a quest that reunites him with former friends and neighbors and leads him into the woods that surround Hemlock Circle. Woods where Billy claimed monsters roamed and where a mysterious institute does clandestine research on a crumbling estate.

The closer Ethan gets to the truth, the more he realizes that no place—be it quiet forest or suburban street—is completely safe. And that the past has a way of haunting the present.

Review- Ethan was having a normal camp out with his best friend Billy, but when Ethan woke up there was a slash in the tent and Billy was gone nowhere to be found. Can Ethan remember anything all these years later to help his friend find some peace, what will he do to get those last pieces to this puzzle together and find out what exactly happened all those years ago to his best friend. this book will keep you guessing till the very last page and you won’t see what actually happened coming.

#truecrime #audio – The Family Next Door: The Heartbreaking Imprisonment of the Thirteen Turpin Siblings and Their Extraordinary Rescue by John Glatt

From New York Times bestselling true crime author John Glatt comes the devastating story of the Turpins: a seemingly normal family whose dark secrets would shock and captivate the world.

On January 14, 2018, a seventeen-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings–ranging in age from 2 to 29–were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. “I’ve never been out,” she stammered.

To their family, neighbors, and online friends, Louise and David Turpin presented a picture of domestic bliss: dressing their thirteen children in matching outfits and buying them expensive gifts. But what police discovered when they entered the Turpin family home would eclipse the most shocking child abuse cases in history. For years, David and Louise had kept their children in increasing isolation, trapping them in a sinister world of torture, abuse, and near starvation.

In the first major account of the case, investigative journalist and author John Glatt delves into the disturbing details and recounts the bravery of the thirteen siblings in the face of unimaginable horror.

I was on a true crime listening spree when I saw this book.  I kinda of remembered the story so I grabbed it.  Jesus I was not prepared for all that I heard in the audio  The fact the husband and wife did all they did to these children is horrendous.  I mean they left their kid for YEARS in a trailer while they and the new baby lived the good life?  I cant understand people.

This is not a book for people who cant handle to hear the extensive abuse that people put their children in but the fact is….it happens…more then we probably know.

I finished the book and shook my head.  I said a giant prayer for all the children in the story and hope they are living their best lives.

I grabbed this book when I saw I had an audio credit.  Man I thought I knew all about this case but after reading it I realized I did not.

What the ladies endured for 10 years is beyond torture.  To see the strength and determination is was something you never know you have until you face what they faced.

I think in the future I will listen to the other stories from the ladies but I may need to wait a few days to clear what  heard out of my head.

This is a great book if you want to learn about older unsolved true crimes or just get a recap of current ones.  I enjoyed that each chapter was 15-20 minutes all about each case.  I learned a few new cases that were older but also got a recap of popular ones I knew well.

Great book for a true crimer reader.

#Biography #ChildAbuse #TrueCrime #audiobook – The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom by Shari Frankie

From eldest daughter Shari Franke, the shocking true story behind the viral 8 Passengers family vlog and the hidden abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, and how, in the face of unimaginable pain, she found freedom and healing.

Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime.

Ruby and Jodi were arrested in Utah in 2023 on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse. On that fateful day, Shari shared a photo online of a police car outside their home. Her caption had one word: “Finally.”

For the first time, Shari will reveal the disturbing truth behind 8 Passengers and her family’s devastating involvement with Jodi Hildebrandt’s cultish life coaching program, “ConneXions.” No stone is left unturned as Shari exposes the perils of influencer culture and shares for the first time her battle for truth and survival in the face of her mother’s cruelty.

I purchased this audiobook.

Like most people I heard about this story on TikTok and many of my true crime podcasts.    I was destroyed by the story of the younger siblings and what happened to them.  I also was heartbroken for Shari and her brother Chad who dealt with different trauma at the hands of their mother.  I never knew what all Shari went through and was so glad I read this story.

Shari’s story was everything I expected it to be.  We heard of all her mom’s narcissism and emotional abuse.  But hearing all the things she went through at the hands of her mom and what happened to her after her mom’s brainwashing was horrible.  I felt so sad for her and all the self-doubt her mom’s abuse caused which caused further abuse at the hands of other people.

I was so proud of her recognizing the abuse of her mom and refusing to follow that path by not reliving any of her siblings abuse.  As she reminds us through the book she will not profit on their abuse since it is their story.  If they want to tell the horrific happenings in the future, then that is their right.  She will not exploit them like Ruby.

I am not sure if she recognized the damage that the church caused her when everything shakes out.  SO I do wish that was addressed but honestly I am so happy with her and where she is now.

I also was so happy to hear she has a great built in support system with people who she loves and value.  She built amazing and safe relationships with people who have supported her through all the bad and now in the good times.

I purchased this book.

I was pretty excited about this book when I saw it somewhere…..tiktok???  Anyway, I jumped and preordered.  When the book downloaded I jumped in.  I am a huge true crimer.  I love to listen to podcasts, read books based on true crimes, and or things published by researchers/police/FBI/etc about crime.  Needless to say, SOLD!!!

I will say the way the story is told seemed like a bunch of term papers published together.  It was a different way to weave a story.  When we get to the chapters about serial killers, I was disappointed that each person was well know to people like me…crazy crimers.  I would have loved to see a new name being discussed with people.  Who doesn’t already know Bundy, Dahmer, BTK…etc.

There is a chapter about true crime podcasts and again the podcasts mentioned were ones that are already popular and one even very controversial given the multiple plagiarism claims against them.  Again I would have loved a new podcast or one that is not already established.  I have so many that I follow.

The book is a great start for someone who is just entering the world of true crime. But for me, it was a little bit of a letdown.  The writing is great but the content for me fell flat given my status of crazy true crimer follower.

I received this book for a gift and jumped right in.  I was thinking based off the name there would be “Trivia” but not really  There were little bits on “extra information” to give to all true crimers.  I did enjoy the way the book was an easy read.  It was not graphic in any way IMO.  It broke down different characteristics of serial killers/spree killers.

I enjoyed the look at some people we know like the fact only Ed Gein successfully plead insanity where others tried (Bianca from the Hillside Strangers case) did not win successfully in that bid.

It is more a bunch of small sections about different aspects of true crime and the people who committed them,

Its a super fast read to quench a thirst for all the true crime people I know.

I live in one of the most beautiful places in Florida, Jupiter, with my wife, two kids and our golden retriever, Vincent. I’ve been a full time author for the last 15 years and I wouldn’t trade it against anything in the world!

My father was a journalist and wrote about some of the worst crimes you could ever imagine, and that’s where my big interest from serial killers and other horrible crimes comes from. Just to hear my father talk about the evil acts of Ted Bundy as we were out fishing as a kid are some of my best memories.

Marley is miss sunshine at Ryder High, so her nickname Sunny is a perfect fit. She is so thoughtful and generous that she brings Mr. Thompson a retired teacher his blueberry muffin top that reminds him of his late wife. So, when she was giving her first teal envelope, she thought it was a complete joke. After finding out it wasn’t she was starting to get excited then for first clue came and it was a total let down, for Marley now she was thinking her admirer, was forced into the game. will she make it the whole month, will it get better or is this the cloud that brings downs the schools sunshine.

BLURB: Are you ready for the hottest summer of your life? I certainly wasn’t when I arrived at Daddy’s resort with my sister. I was the nerdy, slightly shy boss’s daughter and the last thing I thought was that love would change everything for me this summer. Things heat up quite literally. I’m not just talking about my relationship with the surfing instructor, the chauffeur and the resort’s chef as we get closer than ever. The rivalry between my three guys and my sister’s fiancé becomes explosive. When all our hopes and dreams are shattered by a fire, I put everything on the line for my team. If we don’t win that surfing competition, our dreams will go up in flames. But is winning enough when everything is stacked against us and our relationship? At the end of the summer will our dreams come true or will we be left with a pile of smoldering ashes? this is a story where the heroine won’t have to choose between her different love interests. This story is the conclusion of a duet and ends in a HEA. Suitable for readers 18+

REVIEW: i was given this book by the author for an honest review

Greer is just seeing the flames of one of her guy’s cabins and she doesn’t know if Drew is the there or not. Matt and Brady are freaking out as well, but they have a surfing competition to win and now they need to find money to replace the gear they bought once that is now ash from the fire. Greer is trying to think of everything she could do to help I mean she can’t ask her dad for more money she already asked for ten grand, if she asked for more, he would surely want to know what she needs it for this time. the competition is getting closer, the feelings between Greer and her guys are also getting stronger, and they all are worried about what will happen between them when the summer is over, and Greer goes to college. Will they get to surf for the prize money to fight for their future. Will all the drama from Greer’s family stay away from them, and will they find Drew? this was the perfect end to this group, I’m obsessed and totally need more from Mary and Melissa, this had just the right amount of drama, hilarious moments and lots of SPICE and not just from the chef in the kitchen.

BLURB: Laci Rocha Peterson, 8 months pregnant, was last seen by her sister, Amy, in the late afternoon of December 23, 2002. She spoke to her mother, Sharon Rocha, at 8:30 p.m. that night. This would be the last time anyone from her immediate family ever spoke to her.

A search began which lasted an agonizing four months. Sadly, Laci Peterson and her son Conner were found dead on the shores of San Francisco Bay on April 18, 2003.

Her husband, Scott, was eventually arrested and charged with the murder of Laci and Connor. After a sensational, media-saturated trial, Peterson was found guilty of capital murder and was sentenced to death on March 16, 2005.

This book deals with the story in three separate sections: first, Sharon describes the ordinary, loving life her daughter led, including fond memories of her childhood and adolescence. Second, it covers her marriage, disappearance, the community’s moving search for her, and her and Connor’s eventual recovery from San Francisco Bay. Third, it tells the story of the trial in detail not before revealed. Sharon will also talk about victim’s rights, a subject on which she now campaigns regularly.

REVIEW: i bought this book here is my honest opinion

wow just wow I personally didn’t know much about the case in the beginning, I was just in elementary, but the older I got the more I learned about it, and I always guessed that Scott had killed Laci and their unborn son. So of course, when I seen this book at a thrift store i grabbed it up immediately. But like it states in the book the how, where and the biggest question why needed to be answered and they were never really known. Well after reading For Laci and seeing this case from her mom’s point of view I really feel like Scott did do this terrible crime. There are so many things i heard well-read for the first time that I never knew about this case, but one thing is known Scott is a terrible person and both Laci and Connor didn’t deserve anything that happened to them. This book opens your heart, and mind to really seeing behind closed doors. even if you think you know this case from all the tv specials, or you have listened to every podcast on the case you need to read this and get a new point of view on it all.
