Roman

“Say it again,” she murmurs as her fingertips play with the hair at the nape of my neck.

I pull her closer, knowing exactly what she wants without further prompting. I smile at her and she returns the expression, both of us still swaying back and forth to the music. I can’t be sure if our feet move in time with the beat, but it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter at all.

“Logan Elise Schwartz—just like the sky we’ll dance under tonight, filled with the countless stars that God knows by name, my love for you is limitless; bound neither by time nor space. You, babe, are my everything, and I will treasure you until my last breath. In good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, I will cherish the gift that God gave me in the beautiful woman that you are. Your generosity astounds me; your tenderness comforts me; your creativity intrigues me; and your love completes me. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life as your husband. I promise to stand by you, to encourage you, to support you, to take care of you, to honor and respect you. Most of all, I promise to never take back what you stole—my heart is yours, Logan. Forever.”

It’s the third time she’s asked me to repeat my vows this evening, and yet my words still manage to bring tears to her eyes. When one escapes, racing down her cheek, I reach up and wipe it away with the pad of my thumb before I gently grip both sides of her face and lean down to kiss her. She parts her lips immediately, pushing herself up on her tiptoes. I slip one hand around the back of her neck, dropping the other to the small of her back as I accept her invitation, my tongue sweeping through her deliciously hot mouth. She tastes like wine and cake, which is about all either of us have had all night.

When our guests begin to cheer and whistle in response to our open affection, I start to pull away. Logan groans in disapproval, her grip around my neck tightening as she tugs my lip between her teeth in a desperate attempt to keep me close.

I chuckle, pressing my lips to hers once more. “Babe,” I manage between kisses. “Have you forgotten that we have an audience?”

“I don’t think I can wait anymore,” she whispers, her green eyes opening in search of mine. The lust I see in her gaze makes my dick jerk. “I want you so badly, I can hardly breathe. Ever since the pastor said, you may kiss the bride, I’ve wanted you to myself. All these damn people—what was I thinking inviting so many?”

“I think that was more our parents’ fault than yours, babe,” I reply, grazing my nose along hers.

“Then let them entertain them for the rest of the night. Can we go? Please, can we just go?”

My chest tightens with longing. It’s been a feeling I’ve been fighting all day. I’ve waited twenty-seven years for this. The last six months have been particularly difficult. No. Nearly impossible. My wife is a knockout—in sweatpants, with her hair pulled up into a ponytail, or all dressed up for a night out, it doesn’t matter. But today, in her white dress…

It’s strapless, the front cut to accentuate the shape of her breasts. The white material covers her chest and her stomach, but the sides and the back are just scraps of lace that I can see right through. If the bottom wasn’t so long and heavy, there’s no telling what I would have gotten away with today. Then again, we haven’t had a minute alone in hours—and even then, it was literally just a minute. There’s no question that my desire to bury myself into my woman matches her level of want. But I know my bride. I know we need just one more minute.

I kiss her lips and then look away from her, searching the crowd for my best man. When I spot Ashton, drinking a beer and laughing with Ryan and his fiancée, Trisha, I pause a second to see if he’ll look my way. It takes a couple seconds, but being the man of the evening comes with just as many perks as it does setbacks. He nods at me when he notices me staring and I gesture with my hand, signaling that it’s time for him to hand over the keys to our getaway car. He smirks and then nods before elbowing Ryan. They exchange a word and then begin gathering the rest of the wedding party.

When I look back down at my bride, I find that her eyes haven’t left my face. I smirk at her before pressing yet another kiss to her luscious lips. “I love you.”

“I love you more. I can prove it. Let’s go!”

“We will. Just—one second, okay? I need you to do something for me.”

“What?”

“Just look around. Really look around. One last time, take it all in. You’ve worked so hard on this wedding. I want you to see the details before we say goodbye.”

The lust in her eyes fades away, and something far softer takes its place. She inhales deeply and exhales slowly before she rests her cheek on my chest and gazes to my right.

My girl is outrageous and insisted that it wasn’t going to rain on her wedding day. She told me that she and God worked it out; that the miracle of our relationship wouldn’t be complete without the miracle of an outdoor wedding, at the beginning of June, in Colorado, with no rain—or snow—in the forecast. She refused to rent a tent, adamant that we would dance under the stars. I kiss her forehead, not at all surprised that she got her wish. She usually does.

We’re boxed in by an incredible amount of lights strung up around the dinner tables and the dance floor. Shades of pink and white are everywhere. I can’t deny that it looks pretty damn impressive. Leave it to Logan to make hot pink anything look elegant and classy.

A smile pulls at my lips when she takes another deep breath and turns to rest her opposite cheek against my chest. I watch her as her eyes dance around our first slice of happily ever after. When she giggles, I turn my head in search of what she sees. I spot Daphne and Trevor in seconds. Our two-month-old niece and goddaughter, Caroline Aiden, is nestled into the crook of Trevor’s arm; his free hand is wrapped around my sister as they both dance with their little shared heart. Daphne tilts her head back and Trevor is quick to give her a kiss. They look so happy, which only makes this day even better. Their love brought me mine and I’ll never forget it.

“Thank you,” Logan murmurs, giving me a squeeze. She looks up at me with a smile. “Thank you for making me do that.”

“You’re welcome,” I reply, resting my forehead against hers. “Ready to say goodbye?”

“Hell. Yes!”

I chuckle, bringing my mouth to hers before I take her hand. She laces her fingers with mine and we both tighten our grip, ready and anxious to finally be making our escape.

I’m a born and bred Coloradan. While I now reside in Virginia, the land of the Rocky Mountains is where I’ve left a piece of my heart and where my characters come to life. When I’m not writing I’m reading; when I’m not reading I’m writing…you know how it goes! I also enjoy cooking, baking, crocheting, and jigsaw puzzles. Basically, I’m an old soul with a young heart, nonchalantly waiting for my prince to come.

Excerpt
I wake up crying.

Okay… if I’m going to be real, I’ll admit that I’m sobbing. In these strong arms—no, sprawled on top of the solid chest of a man I hardly know—I sob in a way that I never have before. And hopefully, I’ll never have occasion to cry this bitterly again.

My emotions are practically indescribable, yet I need to apply words to them, in an effort to make some sense of what I’m feeling. The pain is raw, grating, and unbearable… and unfortunately there’s more. I’m guilt-ridden and mortified. Devastation crossed with desperation—this is me, at the moment.

And I’m not sure why I’m still here on earth. I want to disappear.

Liam stays silent, but I know he’s awake because his hands have resumed the rhythmic stroking on my back.

“Why’d you have to go and s-save me? Y-you should have let me d-die like I was supposed to!” I’m furious, which is evident in my trembling accusation. The pain would be over if he’d have let me die. I add mad as hell to my list of indescribable emotions. And highly irrational… I tack this one onto the end of the fast growing list.

He inhales deeply. “We’re gonna survive this. Our bodies survived Friday night in the theater. Now we’ve gotta make our minds survive the aftermath.”

“What makes you think I want to survive it? What makes you so sure I didn’t want to go with her?” It’s too hard to say her name.

Wide palms freeze on my shoulder blades and rest there heavily. “Sorry, dude, but it wasn’t your day to die.” He takes another one of those huge swallows of air that causes both of our bodies to rise and fall. Then the mesmerizing movement of his hands resumes.

Author Bio

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to CoolDudes Publishing, Dreamspinner Press, Harmony Ink Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Review – Paralyzed (Vagabond Circus Book 2) by Sarah Noffke

28536401

synopsis

When the worst case scenario befalls the Vagabond Circus, Zuma knows she must ensure it doesn’t fall to doom. Titus’s job is to guarantee the show goes on, while the acrobats seek to avenge and rescue. Jack has no idea that he’s about to levitate himself into a deadly situation, and only Zuma and Finley can save him from a threat unlike what most have ever encountered. In this second whimsical and dark installment of the Vagabond Circus tale, the reader learns just how the ringmaster, Dr. Dave Raydon, rescued everyone in his troupe and also brought love and treasures into their lives. The unveiling of this history only brings more mystery as the true enemy to Vagabond Circus is unveiled. Charles Knight isn’t an evil man with a deadly agenda. He’s the worst kind of human being and he won’t stop until he’s ruined everyone and everything that the ringmaster loves. Paralyzed is an episodic ride that unravels the pieces of this fantasy circus one act at a time.

Melinda's Review

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

If you have not read Suspended STOP right hear…Hurry go one click it …go now. You will want to read it first. Paralyzed starts were Suspended left off. What will the circus do without the glue that held it together is no longer there? How will the circus go on with the acrobats missing?

Jack took off on a mission and now it is up to Finley and Zuma to find him and save him. Jack has no idea what he is dropping in on. Finley knows but doesn’t want to let Zuma in on it. Zuma tries to get Finley to trust her enough to let her in. However, Finley struggles to let her help and allow her in because his past is a dark one.

There were a few secrets that Finley let Zuma in on that surprised me even. I have to say I loved the scenes with Zuma’s family. Her sister was a hoot and her brother oh my. All three of them are so different. I have to say the thing Zuma does to help protect Jack from his family’s hurtfulness had me shaking my head. What was she thinking? Poor Finley cannot catch a break. Meanwhile, back at the circus they are all grieving trying to deal with what is happening. Titus is trying to pull it together and go on but not sure how he can do it.

The ending all I can say is hold onto your Top Hat because things at the circus has been flipped upside down. Sarah has such a way of making you feel paralyzed and suspended in midair at the end of this one. I need to have the third book now!

A few of my favorite lines:

she was pretty certain over the next few days they were going to tear each other’s hearts in pieces when she knew all they wanted was to love one another.

“Why won’t you tell me what the curse was about?” she said, her voice suddenly calmer, restrained. “Because I’m and asshole, Zuma, that’s why,” Finley said.
Life is full of magic and if you try and explain it all then you lose the opportunity for bewilderment, which is a beautiful thing.

Zuma didn’t feel whole anymore but rather melted into the person beside her, like they were one. It was a terrifyingly freeing feeling and the point that those two ideas could exist as one confounded every part of both their beings. Zuma could see nothing. Feel nothing. But she had a knowingness so pure and rich she didn’t question it. She was his. And the person all around her belonged to her as much as she belonged to him. There were one.

it struck Zuma how loving Finley could be, especially for not having given affection all his life. It was like the act of unconditional love was somehow in his DNA. He was truly a marvel to her she realized as she watched him walk away.

EXCERPT

Sloan fingers walk up my chest, grabbing my shirt and forcing me to look down at her. Her eyes glimmer with sensuality and I know exactly where her mind is going. Leaning down, our lips barely touch and the passion is ignited. With a shrill squeal, I scoop her into my arms as though we’re newlyweds about to cross the threshold for the first time. Sloan nibbles on my neck and I moan as I walk us toward the bedroom, ready to christen our new bed.

“You gonna give me the chance to marry you and do this for real?” I ask, already knowing the answer.

“Not a chance in hell.”

I chuckle as I set her on the bed, tugging my shirt off. “I’ll get you to change your mind some day.”

Sloan pulls her own shirt off, leaving me licking my lips at the sight of her in just a black lacy brassiere. Teasing me, she runs her index finger from her collarbone between her breasts, licking her lips and keeping direct eye contact with me. The tip of her finger slips inside her bra and I bite my lip, wanting to replace her hand with mine, but am way too turned on by her own handiwork to stop her.

“Maybe one day, when we’re old and gray,” Sloan says, drawing out her words and speaking in barely a whisper.

She stands up, wiggling her hips and pushing her pants to the floor. Now she’s in just her black lace bra and thong. She turns her back to me, crawling over our king size bed and I reach out, running my hand over her perfectly tight runner’s ass. Sloan stops moving forward, placing her hand on top of mine and leaning up on her knees. Her back is against my chest, our bodies flush against each other’s and I squeeze my hand tightly around the handful in my touch.

“I don’t want easy right now, Smitty. I want you, me, and passion.”

angies-review

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I have got to say I have never read anything from this author so to me this was a GREAT introduction to her writing and even possible books I will want to read later!

Love is a Fire/Burst Into Flame – This story is a great look at the family dynamic of today’s families.  There are your biological kids and your “adopted” kids .  WE are seeing teen preganancies plus extended families.

Andy is being set up by one of his daughter-in-laws to meet Tricia. That part of the story was sweet but to be honest I so want to read about Katy and Nick.  I loved the glimpse we got into this man and his children after the love of his life has passed.

Everybody’s After Love/My Favorite What If – OMG this story….we are so excited to see this family of three growing to be a family of four.  The arrival of the baby is so wanted in one family while another pregnancy is not wanted in another part of their family.  The story line was so amazing and so sad at times but it also is a topic that needs to be addressed as this issue recently occurred to a friend of mine!!!

Loved by the Linebacker – Blake and Molly are hiding out from the prying eyes of the world.  His brother is dating his best friend Camilla.   When the two can finally be together to Valentine’s Day, there is a lot that both characters are hiding from the other…….*Que music*

Holding the Other – Lee and Miranda are a couple who have fallen into the marriage rut.  Sex has lost its excitement.  It’s just a perfunctory.  This Valentine’s Day everything chances when the couple have to face where they are and where they’re headed.

My Favorite What If – Sloane and Smitty are spending their first Valentine’s Day back in the USA.  They have been in a “honeymoon” period without any nosy family members around to disturb their new relationship.

She pulls out of her parking space, and my heart constricts as I watch her drive away from me again. I should duck down so she doesn’t see me, but my eyes won’t veer from her. The beat-up Jetta passes and my stomach clenches. My hand itches to yank the car handle open. My feet beg to disobey and run to her. I don’t have to, because she slams on the breaks and her eyes are locked on mine. Hope pours from mine while hers fume with anger.

She throws the car into park, thrusts the door open, and stomps directly to my door.

She bangs on the window and I jump. “Why are you here?” she screams through the pane.

As I lower the window, the smell of jasmine breezes in. Her perfume still has the capacity to calm me.

“Hey, Taylor.”

“Don’t ‘Hey’ me. Why are you here?” Her voice is sharp and cold, and nothing like I remember. Not sure why I wouldn’t expect less though.

“I thought we could talk.” My fingers move to the knob of my stereo to turn down the music.

“There’s nothing to talk about. Leave.”

She turns and walks back to her car.

I exit my truck and wrap my fingers around her wrist to stop her. She yanks it out of my grip.
“Don’t ever touch me,” she seethes, and I hold my hands up in the air.

“Taylor,” I whisper, and she twists around. The look of fury heavy in her eyes.

She ignores the fact that I’m talking and climbs back into her car. I try to slide through the sliver of the open door, but she squeezes me out and the door rattles shut.

I knock on the window, but she shifts the car into drive. Her hesitation as she sits and studies the steering wheel, tells me my cause isn’t lost. Maybe I have a chance. I knock again, softer this time. Her tear-filled eyes look up at me through the dirty glass, and my heart breaks for what I’ve done. If I affect her this much two years later, how bad did I destroy her then?

“Please,” I beg, and she closes her eyes. I watch her shallow breathing falter.

As though she had a lapse of judgment, she shakes her head and the pain in her eyes disappears, returning to resentment once more. “Go back to your fiancée, Brad.”

Her tires squeal before the rubber catches pavement. Within a minute, she’s left me—again.

“Fuck!” I lift my leg in the air as my toes ignite with heat. She fucking rolled over my foot.

The pain in my foot is nothing compared to the pain in my heart as I watch her taillights disappear around the corner.
angies review

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
*Clapping* Brad the DB gets redeemed!! I am happy because I liked and felt sorry for Brad at times in the last book. Granted he DESERVED the issues he had too contend with BUT still he does deserve a HEA.
Brad has been in love with Taylor forever. He messed up and move on but never really forgot her. He shakes stuff up in the last book and decides to go after his woman. We see Brad stalking Taylor outside of work. He is so scared and afraid of her because he wants and needs her in his life.
Taylor is stunned to see Brad. She literally drives over him *snickers*. He is a mess. She loves him but the hurt he caused her is a very real wound. Taylor is afraid of her heart plus a huge secret she has kept from him for over 2 years.
Brad put son the hard core press to get Taylor to forgive him. He also decides to work part time at the swimming center near his house. When Taylor shows up at his lessons he is stunned and happy over this new predicament he finds himself in.
The two really open up, deal with her family, her closest friend who happens to also love her , and his ex while figuring out how to be together and move forward. Their relationship still had the college romance chemistry but a new grown up feel. She is there to help give Brad the strength to move on and up with his failed Olympic dreams plus he is there to help her realize that she made all the right choices in keeping the secret she did from him.
I CANNOT wait for Dylan and Bea’s story. Those two made the book so funny. They are this weird love/hate thing going on and I cannot wait to see them both get all mushy over the other.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

I have to say I wasn’t sure I wanted to cheer for Brad after everything he did in his past. He was messing up his life and could have messed up a lot of others while on this path of destruction of his. Brad had a girl, Taylor Delaney, and loved her but he let two years go by before he tried to get her back now he was going to have to prove himself to win her over.

Taylor is none too pleased to see Brad at her work one night that she runs him down. Well Okay maybe not that bad but his foot doesn’t get away unscathed. All Brad is asking for is a chance but Taylor has to protect herself, her heart. She has seen drug addiction before and is not sure if Brad has changed. As the saying goes once a cheater always a cheater, but is that true of Brad also or not.

Brad is determined to get her to see he has changed and is committed. He is clean and working part time as a swim instructor trying to figure out what he is going to do with his life but he knows sitting behind a desk utilizing his degree is NOT it.

How is it that Michelle has a way of taking the one I don’t like that I think is not redeemable and redeems him and makes him one of my favorites in the process? Well she does and she did it with Brad. I enjoyed seeing Piper and Tanner and the entire family again. But I have to say I’m so ready for Dylan and Bea’s story. As much grief as Bea gave Brad and her spunk it will not disappoint.

Here is one of my favorite lines from the book and it fits Brad to a T:

Piper and my dad are more similar in that they dip their toes in and then painfully and slowly walk down the stairs into the water. I do a cannonball, not knowing if the water is cold as fuck or warm as pie. I prefer my method much more.

Love Surfaced (Love Surfaced Series, Book 1)
Synopsis:

The equations are simple.
Piper Ashby + Brad Ashby = Twin Siblings
Brad Ashby + Tanner McCain = Best Friends
Piper Ashby + Tanner McCain = Off limits
Tanner and I abided by the rules. We stayed on our
designated sides of the relationship circle.
Ignoring swarming butterflies.
Brushing off skipped heartbeats.
Settling on lingering stares.
Here’s the secret … a hand extended over that invisible line once, exponentially changing the equation. I was convinced we could make our relationship work until Tanner broke the trust he embedded in me from the age of seven.
One deceit of mega proportions and the relationship we built for that short month vanished. I swore never to speak to him again and it’s worked. Until now—two years later, when my brother’s wedding places me face-to-face with the best man—Tanner McCain.
Leaving one equation to be solved. Can love surface twice?

I was born a fighter. Abandoned by my parents, I spent my life forging my own path—one guided by my fists and paved with pain.

Untouchable in the ring, I destroyed everyone who faced me, but that’s where my victories ended. Outside the ropes, I repeatedly failed the few people who loved me. Including my best friend, Liv James—the one person I’d die to protect.

Even though I didn’t deserve her, Liv never stopped believing in me. Never gave up. Never let go. After all, she understood what I’d lost, because she’d lost it too.

Liv was everything to me, but she was never truly mine.

That was going to change.

I lost my first love, but I refused to lose my soulmate.

Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.

Fighting to be the man she deserves.

Fighting the solitude of our pasts.

Fighting for her.

Melinda's Review

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

This story had me in tears in the first few pages, more in the middle, and even more at the end. Some tears were the blubbering crying tears you cannot believe this is happening and some were form pure joy. All the page boys had been through so much in their life and even though Quarry was the youngest his older brothers couldn’t protect him from everything.

Quarry Page lived with a mom that never loved him and a dad that never cared. Quarry could kbe sure of a few things though ever since he was 10 he always had his brothers, Eliza, and his best friend Liv. No matter what they were there and always had his back. Even when he messed up they were always there.

Liv James the daughter of Leo James had her own fears and issues but Quarry was a constant in her life. Even when she lost her other best friend who was also Quarry’s girlfriend. They were each other’s rock but she never could cross the line of friends with Quarry because of Mia.

First off I love Quarry and Lice watching them grow and mature together as friends. I wasn’t sure how this was going to go. Ho was Liv not going to feel like she was second choice for Quarry after everything they had been through with Mia. I loved the letters that Mia left for everyone it took them long enough to accept them and read them. I have to say Quarry was great once he realized what he really wanted and went for it. I loved the two together as friends when they were kids but when they were together when they were older was off the charts. The ending was the vest and yes here is where the water works began again because Aly really knows how to tug at a girl’s heart. I have to say I loved Quarry and this story was more than I ever expected.

Here are a few of my favorites:

My heart became my best-kept secret. Liv was exactly opposite. She wore her heart on her sleeve and exuded innocence. With straight, brown hair and olive-toned skin, she looked like a tiny Hispanic angel. I knew her better than that though. Liv didn’t have an innocent bone in her body. That girl made my brand of trouble look amateur. And , because of that, she quickly became my best friend and partner in crime.

The real pain was that, even though she would be on my arm when we walked through the doors, she would be fair game for every single man in the room. No. Liv James definitely wasn’t mine. Yet.

I was finally realizing what I should have known fourteen years earlier when I’d first laid eyes on her. Liv James had never been just my best friend.

Fighting Solitude

Prologue

“Mia!” I shouted.

It was worthless. She’d been deaf since the day I met her.

She’d never once heard my voice.

She’d never heard the deep rumble of my laugh when she was excited, signing so fast I could barely keep up.

She’d never heard my content sigh when she barged into the locker room after a fight—just her presence soothed the lingering madness brewing within me.

She’d never heard me whispering my deepest fears into her ear as she fell asleep on top of me.

She’d never heard the reverence in which I cried her name each and every time I took her body.

And she’d never once heard the ease in which the words I love you tumbled from my lips as I stared into her deep, jade green eyes.

But as I screamed her name while watching her petite body seizing in the passenger seat beside me, I’d never needed her to hear me more.

“Mia. Oh God. I’ve got you, baby.”

She was still thrashing violently as I made my way around to her door, yanking it open while pleading with whatever god was willing to help.

When she stilled, a whole new level of silence filled the air around us. It wasn’t the absence of sound.

It was the absence of life.

“Mia, breathe!” I roared as her chest remained agonizingly still. “Help me!” I screamed at the closed emergency room doors, but no medical savior rushed out with the miracle I so desperately needed.

My hands shook wildly as I released her lifeless body from the seatbelt.

“I’ve got you, just hang on. Please just hang on, Mia,” I whispered lifting her into my arms and sprinting through the sliding doors. “I need a doctor! She’s not breathing!”

Nurses rushed towards me in slow motion as the seconds without air in her lungs passed at a terrifying speed.

Breathe.

A doctor appeared with a gurney and quickly took her from my arms.

The immediate loss was staggering.

Hope became my only solace.

She needed help that I wasn’t capable of giving her, but that didn’t stop me from following close behind as they rolled her away. I was on the verge of self-destructing; letting her out of my sight wasn’t an option.

I stood motionless in the doorway while doctors and nurses swarmed around her. Their mouths moved frantically, but without my hearing aids I was worthless to make out the words their faint voices carried.

I never wore my hearing aids when I was with Mia. There was no point. She rarely spoke with her voice.

We’d spent four years building a relationship with our hands.

Those hands had told me animated stories that made me laugh until my face hurt from smiling.

They’d fought with me relentlessly, but always ended the night raking down my back in silent ecstasy.

Her fingers had fluidly signed I love you more times than I could ever count—or forget.

But as I felt the nurse attempting to physically remove me from the room, my eyes became fixated on her limp hand dangling off the side of the bed. It was the only sight more frightening than watching her flail mid-seizure.

It ripped the heart straight from my chest.

That hand was supposed to be full of life.

It was the very essence of Mia.

Pale.

White.

Still.

Oh God.

Sucking in a deep breath, I held it until the room began to spin.

It provided me no relief even as it forced me to my knees.

There would be no distraction from this.

I was going to lose her.

Yet another woman I couldn’t save.

“Can I ask you a question?” she says as she leans back in the seat.I take her free hand and entwine it with mine. Placing both of our hands in my lap, I nod.

“You can ask me anything.”

She takes a deep breath as if she is suddenly nervous. “How do you do it? How do you love me knowing everything you do?”

She still doesn’t get it.

I stare at her for a moment before taking her glass out of her hand. I place both glasses in the little slots that were made for them and turn to her. “Come here,” I whisper. She slides toward me and I pull her onto my lap so she is straddling me. I wrap my arms around her waist and breathe her in for a moment. “What makes you love your parents, Ned?” I ask calmly. She looks puzzled and shakes her head.

“I don’t know,” she says shrugging her shoulders. “It comes naturally, I don’t have a reason … I just love them, I always have I guess.”

“That’s exactly the way I feel about you. I can’t explain the reason that I love you. It’s like asking me why I breathe … I do it to survive.”

She’s silent. Then she nods her head.

“I get it,” she whispers. “I just needed to know if you felt it too or whether I was going crazy.”

“You’re definitely going crazy, you’re just not going crazy by yourself,” I chuckle. She laughs.

“Well, misery loves company so why shouldn’t crazy,” she teases.

“Exactly.”

“Doesn’t it scare you?” she asks seriously.

“What?”

“Knowing it’s all going to come to an end,” she says sadly.

“It terrifies me,” I say honestly. “I hate that I never found you sooner but I’d hate it if I never found you at all.”

“Yeah,” she breathes.

“Are you scared?” I ask.

“Yes, not of dying but of knowing that I’ll never feel anything like this again.”

“That’s ridiculous,” I scoff.

“What?” she asks in confusion.

“Babe, do you honestly think that when I get to heaven I’m not coming to find you — well after I thank the big guy for letting me in of course. But after that, your ass better be prepared to spend an eternity with me because if I’m going to live forever then I’m going to spend every day of it seeing that smile.”

She kisses me. I love it when she kisses me first. I am so in love I should have my balls cut off.

A Woman’s Worth – Audra North

Title: A Woman’s Worth
Series: Close Quarters Book 1
Author: Audra North
Genre: Erotic Romance
Release Date: February 9, 2016
Chantal Jones is going through a rough patch. A divorced single mother to two demanding boys, she’s constantly putting the needs of others before her own. She’s exhausted, and the only thing that fuels her fantasies these days is her sexy, off-limits boss, Ronan Nakata.
Ronan has definitely noticed how attractive Chantal is, but he’s her employer and their relationship has to remain strictly professional. Besides, he isn’t looking for anything serious and the last thing he wants to do is get emotionally involved.
But when a chance encounter in the company elevator leaves them both strung tight and wanting, taking it to the next level is seemingly inevitable. In such close quarters, will they be able to get their attraction out of their systems without losing their hearts?

Chantal Jones was tired.
Work had eaten her up today. By the time she’d arrived at the elementary school to pick up Luke and Owen from their afterschool program, it had taken every last ounce of her control to keep from screaming when the instructor complained that her children had been shooting spitballs at the ceiling.
Their afterschool teacher had pursed his mouth and stared at her chest as he told her, “They will not be allowed to return to my classroom until I see a formal written apology for their behavior, Mrs. Jones.”
She’d had to fight the urge to punch him in the neck. Not because she thought he was lying about her kids. Chantal didn’t doubt her boys had been acting up. Ever since the divorce, they’d been behaving this way. But a writtenapology? This guy was the one who should be writing an apology to her. Making her boys write an apology meant more time out of her day, supervising their work, when she could have just as effectively dealt with their behavior by taking away a week of screen time.
Besides, the guy was a sleazy asshole who’d been ogling her breasts since the first day, and sometimes he liked to stand too close so his chest brushed hers. It made her cringe just to think of it.
Except this was the only program that offered care until six thirty, and even then she was sometimes late to pick them up. Even if she could manage the five o’clock pickup time for all the other programs, they were already two months into the semester. Too late to transfer the boys into another class, and they were too young to be at home alone.
Their teacher had her pinned to the proverbial wall and he knew it. Liked it, no doubt.
It made her feel even more alone and exhausted. The scolding she’d given the kids on the car ride home was weak. She was simply too tired, and they’d ignored her.
She pulled into the drive and parked the car, then glanced in the rearview mirror. “Remember to take your—”
Bang! Bang!
Both back doors slammed shut.
They’d jumped out, leaving their backpacks in the car, and were already running to the front door of the Victorian house where they lived.
Chantal sighed. She always loved her children, but from time to time, she really hated them too.
It was difficult not to fume as she’d walked down the driveway to check the mail. Several bills. A lingerie catalog.
“Yeah, right.” She snorted and flipped past it to find an envelope from the law firm she’d used for her divorce.
“Oh.” It came out as more of a squeak than an actual word. She broke the seal on the envelope and pulled out the document, reading only the first couple of lines before folding it and sticking it back into the stack of mail.
Her ten-year marriage was truly over.
The roller coaster of an emotional mess she’d been on lately plummeted, a fast and sickening drop she hadn’t seen coming. She uttered a prayer of thanks that the boys had already gone inside. If they’d seen the way she was having to fight back her tears right now, they would refuse to go to Mike’s this weekend. And if they refused, it would escalate into yet another shouting match with her sonofabitch ex-husband that would no doubt make her want to crawl into bed for days. As it was, she simply wiped her eyes, squared her shoulders, and headed into the house with what had to be the world’s craziest fake smile plastered on her face.
“Boys!” She could hear the electronic music from a game on the PlayStation coming from the next room. Chantal dropped her smile and rolled her eyes. There was a strict weekends-only rule for the stupid thing. Mike had bought it for them a couple of months before she’d found out about the affair, and she hated it for way too many reasons to count.
She slipped out of her shoes in front of the door and strode into the den, where the boys were standing with their faces in front of the TV, eyes glued to the screen. Without hesitation, she clicked the TV off and removed the cable from the console so they couldn’t play anymore.
“Hey!” Luke’s eyes were wide and angry, his wiry body stiff with rage. Chantal was about to remind them of the weekend rule when he threw his controller at her, the hard plastic connecting with her forearm. She screamed in pain, ducking her chin and jerking her arm up to cradle it against her chest.
Holy shit, that hurt.
“Mommy. Mommy, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Mommy, I didn’t mean to I was mad and it was an accident and I—” She looked up to see Luke standing inches from her, his face pinched in concern. He was already crying—worried, frustrated tears falling down his still-chubby cheeks.
Owen had backed up to the wall, staring wide-eyed at his mom and brother. Luke’s arms were extended, but he wasn’t quite touching her, as though he were afraid she might turn him away.
What the hell had happened to her family?
The anger fell away and she pulled Luke to her, hugging him tightly. “I forgive you, sweetie. I forgive you.”
He cried in earnest then, great sobs rolling out of his body as she cuddled him and her arm throbbed. She’d known he was having a hard time with the divorce. Luke had always been a hotbed of emotion, but instead of the intense joy he used to show so readily, this past year he’d been constantly lashing out with anger. And to top it all off, being a single mom meant she had to work to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, but it also meant there was no energy left for them when she got home from a long day.
God. How much longer could they go on like this?
