#review #thriller #standalone Middle of the Night by: Riley Sager

In the latest jaw-dropping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Riley Sager, a man must contend with the long-ago disappearance of his childhood best friend—and the dark secrets lurking just beyond the safe confines of his picture-perfect neighborhood.

The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul de sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again.

Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. Someone seems to be roaming the cul de sac at odd hours, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in Ethan’s backyard. Is someone playing a cruel prank? Or has Billy, long thought to be dead, somehow returned to Hemlock Circle?

The mysterious occurrences prompt Ethan to investigate what really happened that night, a quest that reunites him with former friends and neighbors and leads him into the woods that surround Hemlock Circle. Woods where Billy claimed monsters roamed and where a mysterious institute does clandestine research on a crumbling estate.

The closer Ethan gets to the truth, the more he realizes that no place—be it quiet forest or suburban street—is completely safe. And that the past has a way of haunting the present.

Review by Twinsie Dee

i bought this book and this is my honest review

Ethan was having a normal camp out with his best friend Billy, but when Ethan woke up there was a slash in the tent and Billy was gone nowhere to be found. Thirty years later, still no idea why he didn’t get taken with Billy, Ethan is now back in his childhood home with so many flashbacks and questions now coming back to him. but when Ethan starts having odd things start happening to him that where things between him and Billy, Ethan starts wondering if Billy is trying to tell him something they never found out if he was killed or not, so Ethan just can’t let this slip passed him. Can Ethan remember anything all these years later to help his friend find some peace, what will he do to get those last pieces to this puzzle together and find out what exactly happened all those years ago to his best friend. this book will keep you guessing till the very last page and you won’t see what actually happened coming.

#Review – Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw

A USA TODAY BESTSELLER • A Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, British Fantasy, and World Fantasy Award Finalist! • An Indie Next Pick! • An October LibraryReads Pick! • 2022 RUSA Reading List: Horror Winner!

Cassandra Khaw’s Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists.

A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company.

It’s the perfect venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends, brought back together to celebrate a wedding.

As a horror reader, I really enjoyed this novella. I found the writing smart and it pulled me right into the story.

Kat and her friends are spending a few days at what is known to be a haunted mansion in Japan. Personalities don’t always mesh as we find out there is some animosity between a couple of the characters.

As things progress, they have a night of food, drinks and chatting where secrets come to light and things that should stay hidden, don’t. Friendships are tested but while this is happening, the house they’re staying in has secrets of its own.

They end up coming face to face with a ghost who’s only looking for some company. Nothing wrong with that right?

Review by Twinsie Angie

I purchased this book.

I love new series from authors I call a “one click” author. So when Miranda dropped this bad boy I was ready.  Life lifed and I had to wait a couple days to get to it but I did finally.

This book is a slight spin off from the other series she has.  There are brief mentions of the characters but it is not necessary to read them at all but trust me you will want too.

I love MC stories so I was very excited to read about Karma and her story.  I also love the enemies to lovers with Chaos.  I mean who doesn’t wanna see that chemistry combust.

The story was a series starter so I know to give it time to open up and tell us all the characters.  I will say because we had 2 separate MC clubs it was a little confusing getting all the new characters off the bat.  So a few times I was like is that her club?  His?  Dad’s??

Karma was rejected by her mate and was destroyed.  Her dad takes her home and years later she is running her own club without daddy around.  Chaos is part of her dad’s club and they soon need to lean on each other to figure out what is going on in the town.  Of course they are at each others throats and Karma was sooooo pushing Chaos away.  When he starts making deals with her to spend time with him she does it but is still confused about the chemistry.  She HAD a mate so there is no dang way he is her mate like he claims.

The chemistry was great.  They were perfect pair and I cant wait to see where this series goes in future books.

Mother to two teenage boys, 2 four legged babies, and wife to a loving army veteran who doesn’t mind the extra voices in her head. Miranda grew up on a dairy farm in Illinois, but calls Portland, TN home now. She is an avid reader, coffee addict, wine lover, crafter, and beginning quilter. Though her true passion is in creating her own worlds, characters, and stories for her readers.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

Dying to find your soul mate can suck. But it can be so totally worth it!

When I first started reading I wasn’t completely sure if I was going to really like it. There was a lot of “you must believe in God,” “he has to believe in God,” etc. It’s good to believe in something. Well, I kept reading because the story was starting to get going. We are learning more about guardian angels and guardian demons. Then there is a little love triangle conflict happening. What?! There is literally so much going on that you have to keep turning the pages because if you don’t, you are bound to miss something!

Kendra is given a second chance at life but this second chance is with her soul mate… as long as she can show him love. She has one week. At the same time, she has to contend with her own guardian angel and demon, plus her family and friends.

This is an epic love story with a million roadblocks but when love conquers all evil, you never have to give up hope!

K. S. Haigwood is the author of the Save My Soul, Eternal Island and Moonrising series. By day, she is a CNC Machinist, but by night and weekend, she saves the world or destroys it in a single bound, depending on what mood she is in and if she has had her coffee. In addition to being an award winner for the ‘Life Changing Read Award’, she has also been nominated twice for Best Indie Book 2016 in the Paranormal category.

Characterization is one of K.S. Haigwood’s strongest points. You can understand each characters’ predicaments and you can almost foresee their reactions. But. There’s always a but, with this author, because Haigwood can deliver enough twists and turns to turn a tornado on its head. Just as you think you’ve figured where the story is going next, she’s duped you again.

The whole of her novels are littered with good chuckle moments, and even in the darkest hour, the thinnest hint of a silver lining is still visible among the clouds.

Shock therapy for body and soul, delivered at a hundred miles an hour with the humor and charisma of a trendsetter, Haigwood is certain to be hailed the new wonder-drug to cure all ills.

#Review – #0.5 Zodiac Academy: Origins of an Academy Bully by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti

Dark magic is forbidden at Zodiac Academy. That’s why I hide it so well.

But now I’m supposed to mentor Darius Acrux: the son of the most ruthless Dragon Shifter in Solaria. If he’s caught using blood magic, he’ll lose his claim to the throne.

The problem is? Our families are up to something, and we’re determined to find out what.

No matter what dark power we must turn to…

Welcome to Zodiac Academy, where your star sign defines your destiny. As the Fae of the future, you will soon learn the merciless way to claim your power. Life among the Vampires, Shifters and Sirens is no easy ride, but if you can make it through your exams, you might just be able to harness your inner strength and earn your place among the elite.

***This is a prequel novella set five years before Zodiac Academy: The Awakening, Book 1 in the Zodiac Academy series.***

When I started this series, I didn’t realize there were so many books and that it should be read in a certain order. Thankfully, I haven’t missed much but it was nice going back to the beginning to find out how Lance and Darius’s bond formed. Darius’s father is still a monster and I loathe him even more now. It was also nice to see how Lance was completely different compared to now (I’m on book 3 of the series). Looks I’ll have to go back and read the one told by the boys too.

This novella introduces us to the dark magic you hear Lance talk about later on. If you read this one first, you will get spoilers. So I actually liked reading book 1 and 2 first and then going back to read this one. I think I’ll like that for the boys book too. It’s such a big world and I’m so looking forward to reading all of these books. I also can’t wait to get them in paperback because I know I’ll want to read them again and again.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

Ok, so, I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic, dystopian, end of the world, zombies, vampires, etc. Now this series, it mixes post-apocalyptic and vamps….I just had to read it!

When the world around you has become a graveyard and everything has been taken away from you, what do you have to live for? April is trying to live. She is a 17-year-old who has to grow up really fast and lives for her mother and brother. When they are abducted, she just has to find them.

It has been a year since a virus outbreak that didn’t cause zombies but there was an outbreak of feral vampires. I have to be honest and eyerolled a bit here because I was hoping for something a bit more original instead of a virus. However, I continued. While April is out searching for her family and during one of her rage killings of feral vampires, she is introduced to a hybrid vampire. Ultimately, an entire hive of hybrid vampires. Turns out that that she has something that this hive needs, but she also needs this hive to help her find her family. A little tit for tat. Nothing wrong with that, right? While this part of the story is unfolding, we end up getting some cliché’ vampire vibes (forever mating, being able to walk in sunlight, etc.) and I had to hide another slight eyeroll. I had a bit of problem that a year has gone by and April and her family never ran into the hybrids in Las Vegas while foraging.

While some of these things bothered me during the story, the writing was done very well. Even though some of it wasn’t as original as I had hoped, there is a lot of great writing and story telling that keeps you turning the pages. The characters are well developed and April is extremely easy to identify with. Her internal struggle is very real. If placed in a similar position, I don’t know if many people could mentally handle the situation. There is quite the plot twist that is keeping me hanging on and I do need to continue to find out what happens. I am also invested in her love interest *wags eyebrows*!

#WOTR25 #Review – Resonant (The Vampires of Vegas Prequel) by Alexis Purdy

I love Prequels! Especially after you get invested with the main character and just NEED to see what the heck they went through at the beginning. However, in this instance, I started with the prequel. Sometimes, this is a big no no because you are just not committed to the story yet. Well, Alexia Purdy is a new to me author and I am now invested in this story. I need to know what craziness April and her family are about to get into. APOCALYPTIC VAMPIRES! I read this in less than an hour and was so bummed that the story was over. But the best part is, I get to dive right into Reign of Blood like, RIGHT NOW! See ya on the flip side!

Review by Twinsie Angie

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

When Kylie said she had a Vampire novel I was excited.  Paranormal is my favorite genre to read.  I do love that Kylie is stretching her writing chops to tackle new subjects and new genres.  I have read every book of hers and will continue to do so.

Skye is a fabulous character who was in the wrong place at the wrong time when she became a meal for a starving just woke up elder vampire.  Poor girl.  She soon is thrown into a world of violence, betrayal, family, and rules???  Crazy right.

I liked Skye and her character.  She was a modern woman who was not to thrilled with Lucas and his old timey ways.  Lucas is a hot mess in this time period.  Things have changed and he needs to roll with the new times.  Henry…he made the book.  I loved every sentence he uttered in the book and every single scene.

SO did I like the book?  Yes-ish.  The banter with Henry was the best.  Its what I love most about Kylie books. Her banter is on point.  What I didn’t love was the constant retelling of information when a new character was introduced to the storyline.  It felt like too much of the same things.  I liked the story line of the new “Board” vs Lucas and his “old ways”.  I also felt like the story was stiff and was almost too slow to get going.  By the last few chapters I felt like it was better with the story and flow.

I would love to see another book since I feel towards the end of the book Kylie got into a good flow with the world and characters.
