#WOTR #Spotlight – Drew Elyse @drewelyseauthor

Drew Elyse

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Drew Elyse.
I’m a proud nerd. My obsessions include Disney, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Sherlock, Firefly, X-Men, and I’m realizing now I should stop this list because it will go on for a very long time.
Literature and music are my passions, and I studied both in college.
I’m a crazy hockey fan–GO Blackhawks!
I’m proud to be from Sweet Home Chicago.
As for my books, I currently write contemporary romance. Mostly, that’s focusing on the Savage Disciples MC. I just love some hot, alpha, dirty-talking bikers.

When and Why did you start to write?

I’ve always written. Even when I was a kid, I wrote (and illustrated, though I stopped doing that part because I cannot draw) books. Being an author was one of the only jobs I ever considered from the time I was old enough to understand what a job was. I never wanted to be a teacher or a firefighter. I wanted to write.
I guess the “why” of my writing is that I can’t help it. Stories and characters just come to me. I could never write them down, but it would drive me crazy.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I want to be helpful here, but I’m going to be a bad person and skip this question because there are so many amazing names that come to mind that I would never stop!

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

The most surprising thing for me over the years had been realizing that other people’s minds aren’t constantly occupied by fictional people. Since it’s always been something I’ve done, the craziness of it doesn’t really stand out to me. Writing has been so much a part of who I am for as far back as I can remember. So, when people say things like “I just don’t know how you come up with this?” or they ask where I got an idea or something similar. For me, this is always a bizarre moment because I don’t DO anything. The ideas, the scenes, the characters just show up in my head. In a lot of ways, writing isn’t really a process for me at all. The idea shows up in my head one day, and I write it down. It’s not always an easy to get the words just right, but it’s kind of simple at its core.

What are you working on now?

Right now, I’m making sure Ignite (Savage Disciples MC #4) is all ready to be released into the world. I’m also working on the next book in the series, Daz’s Story (title TBA).
As always, I have a variety of other projects in the works in the background, but I like to keep those quiet until I have something to announce.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

Panster. All day, every day. I don’t plot. I’ve attempted it once or twice to see if it would be helpful, and I ended up throwing the whole the away. I just start with whatever scene or concept came to me, fully develop the characters in my head until I know them as well as my best friend (who I really do know just freakishly well), then I start writing right at the beginning of their story. I write in order all the way through, so the plot develops as I get there.
