#WOTR #Spotlight – Lisa Caviness @lisaCavinessWriter

Lisa Caviness

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I am Lisa Caviness. With a degree in nursing I’ve worked in a variety of settings. I’ve worked in hospital patient care before moving to positions in medical policy and clinical trial management of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. I love history and learning about how people think. Physical fitness is a huge part of my life and I enjoy running, weight lifting, and a variety of other activities. I grew up in the midwest but I lived a number of years in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

When and Why did you start to write?

My writing journey began in childhood. I have always been a voracious reader and writing spawned from my love of the written word. Reading opened up new worlds for me which propelled my imagination and urged me to put all those stories into my own words.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I read in a variety of genres. My favorite genre is suspense. In the romantic suspense genre some of favorite authors are: Nora Roberts, Karen Robards, Julie Garwood, and Mary Burton. In the mystery/suspense/thriller genres I read Brad Thor, Brad Meltzer, Lisa Garner, Hank Phillipi Ryan, Gillian Flynn, Dan Brown, and Daphne Du Maurier. I also enjoy young adult books. I specifically have enjoyed the Michael Vey series by Richard Paul Evans. Lastly, in the Indie world I’ve been exposed to some amazing writers. I would enthusiastically recommend Aleatha Romig, Jillian Jacobs, TC Winters, Ava Cuvay, Jeana E. Mann, Fiona Riplee, LaNora Mangano and that’s just to name a few!

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

Writing is really hard! There’s a huge difference between the perfect story inside my head and what comes across on paper. My challenge is to create a world on paper that’s as close to that perfect, intriguing, interesting, and compelling story inside my head.

What are you working on now?

Currently, I am editing Book 2 in my Order Series, entitled, Order of Malice. Book 3, Order of Rage, is also in the works. I’m also working on a short story for a new anthology.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

I’m a little of both. As a suspense writer, I find that detailed planning works best. I develop comprehensive plots, character sketches, and setting guides but during the writing process new ideas surface and the story takes a turn.
