Consumed (Firefighters, #1)

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Ann Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family’s scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.

Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed…

By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.

Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.

Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn’t believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again–until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.

Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm . . .

I received this book from the Netgalley for an honest review.

I was excited to see this new series on Netgalley when I was looking for a book to read.  I am a huge fan of her paranormal series and I also loved her older Jessica Bird books.

Since I knew there was going to be world building with introducing a new series, characters and relationships, I sat back and enjoyed the world she was creating for us.  The world building was a little bit slower then I anticipated but once the story took off, it was blowing me away.  The twists and turns were amazing.  I didn’t see the twists coming at all!!

Anne is one hell of a woman.  I don’t know that I would have done what she does in the beginning of the story that changed her life for good.  She is strong and feisty if not stubborn to a fault when it comes to how she feels for Danny.

Danny is just…yum…can I get that outta the way.  He is strong and alpha but vulnerable when it comes to his feelings for Anne.  They have a chemistry that you can FEEL through the pages throughout the story.   Their banter is this flirty yet the push and pull that left me wanting more…wanting one of them to cross that line from “friends wanting” to “friends with MORE”.

The book has many different stories.  Its Anne and Danny redefining THEM.  Its Anne getting over her life changing event.  Its Danny figuring out HIM after losing Anne.  It’s the arson investigation Anne is trying to figure out.  It’s the firefighters and the fire station.  It’s the politics of the town and lastly its figuring out what you want out of life when you realize you had it all wrong.

The book is very complex with all the relationships and history of the characters.  There is so much comradery and respect for one another all the while everyone is dealing with their own demons.  Some of those demons will come back to cause issues for Danny, Anne and the entire firefighting family of station 499.

I can’t wait for the next book and I REALLY HOPE that Tom is the next book.  Anne’s brother needs some love.  He is carrying to world on his shoulders.  I am even more excited for this series after reading the book.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

I am so excited to read these smokin’ HOT firemen. I absolutely love JR. Ward’s vampires but I think this series is going to be just as good.  When this book started I was stressed to no end. That first fire, one mistake, and two lives changed. That on mistake left one finding a new career field and the other feeling guilty and responsible.

Anne is one strong willed, hard headed, and courageous woman. These things are what kept her going when she wanted to give up but she fought and came back a stronger woman.  I loved Anne she doesn’t back down and is so ballsy.

Danny, yeah he got my heartrate going.  He is just as strong willed and hard headed as Anne but toss in that he is an Alpha that there is a triple threat.

The chemistry between Anne and Danny is off the charts and we see it from the beginning. They are like magnets when facing opposite directions they do not fit but turn them around and BAM they go right together.  It takes them a while to figure things out as both of them are trying to find themselves after THE fire that changed their lives. I cannot even start to tell you everything that is going on in this book but there is much more than just Danny and Anne.  There are things the other guys in Danny’s fire station that are dealing with some heavy stuff. Plus there is Anne’s brother WOW he has a lot on his shoulders.

The twists that happened in this book blew me away I didn’t see any of them coming.  Let’s just say I was floored so many times. I am so excited for this next book.  I need to find out what is going to happen with the entire group of firefighters not just Danny and Anne’s group but her brother’s too.

#Review – The Angel’s Share by @JRWard1

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward delivers the second novel in her Bourbon Kings series—a sweeping saga of a Southern dynasty struggling to maintain a façade of privilege and prosperity, while secrets and indiscretions threaten its very foundation…

In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème de la crème of high society—just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discrete staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder…

No one is above suspicion—especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle—as well as with his former horse trainer’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family’s financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself.

Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, at the very brink of the family’s demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior…or the worst of all the sinners?

TWINSIE DEB’S REVIEW

The Angels’ Share by J.R. Ward
“TO BIG BROTHERS”
5 Southern Stars

So, if you’ve read my review of The Bourbon Kings, than you know that this book has a ton of characters and no ONE in this book is singled out. Well, not really. There’s still major chaos going on. There’s still the crazy Baldwine family and all their fucked-up-ness. And there’s still a crisis going on so pull up your big girl panties, get yourself a stiff drink (maybe some bourbon), and sit back and enjoy the ride.

So, Lane is still trying to figure out what’s going on with his family and the business, only now there’s more shit added to his plate. William Baldwine (Lane’s father) has been found dead, but before he departs this lovely world he leaves a complete and utter conundrum for his family to deal with. Lane certainly has his work cut out for him, but with the help of his lovely Lizzie I think he’ll manage. Fingers crossed!

I’m not going to mention all the supporting characters like before. I’m just going to tell you about some of my favorites! Samuel T. is my absolute fave. This guys outer shell tells you he’s a ladies man, a player, and a hard-hitting lawyer. His insides tell me he’s in love with Gin, but he’s too proud to tell her. I loved seeing his softer side in this one even though is was very brief, it was a nice change. Now, Edward Baldwine is still one of my faves and shall remain that way till I draw my last breath. He’s loyal to his siblings and friends. He’s smart and sexy and just plain old perfect. He does have some “daddy issues” that really should be dealt with, but, eh… I’ll take him! One more supporting character that bares mentioning is Gin. She starts this series being the regal spoiled brat that can’t even barely drive herself anywhere. She ends this book as someone I’d actually spend time with. I was glad to see the turn around. Must have had something to do with that “secret” talk she had with a certain hottie!

This book is just as good as the first, if not better. I seriously cannot wait to get to the bottom of all these shenanigans. I ate up every damn word and craved more. The pacing is pretty spot on and the writing style…well.. it’s JR Ward for godsakes… it rocked! More plot twists and tension will keep you enthralled for hours. I loved this and cannot wait for the next book.

#Review The Beast by @JRWard1 #BDB #Rhage

the beast over

Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…

For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…

And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world…and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from…

TWINSIE DEB’S REVIEW

The Beast by J.R. Ward
Rhage & Mary & Bitty
ALWAYS NICE GOING BACK TO CALDWELL
5 STARS

So, this is like, what? The 14th book in the series… Holy hell Ms. Ward… you just keep pumping ’em out! Well, this one kind of brought me back to when the story of the Black Dagger Brotherhood began. Not only because it’s predominately focused on Rhage and Mary, but because the writing is similar to earlier books. I like that!

Rhage has been troubled by some strange yearning feeling. He’s not acting on it just yet, but more like trying to figure out why the hell he’s been so moody and why holding a baby would make him feel all weepy and sappy. I think he knows the reason why, but since his Shellan can’t give him what he craves, he’ll do his best to make these feelings disappear. I will tell you this.. I love this side of him. He’s melting my heart all over again.

Mary is working hard at Safe Place and is paying close attention to one case in particular. A little girl by the name of Bitty. Mary is helping her with the death of her Mother and with transitioning into a life without her. I think Mary is feeling a little overwhelmed with her job and personal life crashing into one another, but she’s keeping it under control for now.

There are a few side stories brewing in The Beast that I’m sure we’ll see more of in books to come. Xcor and Layla (I believe) will be the next book to come out called The Chosenand Assail struggling with his drug addiction which I’m sure hasn’t even begun to get bad enough for him to relinquish it.

So, this series is like a staple for me. A book comes out, you get it. No questions asked. YOU BUY IT! Simple as that. I just want to go on record for saying that JR Ward’s writing style is impeccable. She not only delivers a brilliant tale, she makes you a part of it. She has from the very beginning inDark Lover. The storyline is enormously persuasive, her dialogue flows with ease and even makes you crack the fuck up at times, and her characters are commanding and spot on. I love this series!
