#WOTR #Spotlight – Juls Berghammer @JBerghammer

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Besides being a writer, I am also a hair stylist for my day job as well as a wife and mother to two terrific grown men whom my own mother tells me to use as cover models. Someday I just may do that.
For 30 years I was a carded horse show judge. Due to health reasons I had to give that up. Not willingly I might add. Judging was always my passion.

When and Why did you start to write?

I began writing stories 30 plus years ago, but with a horse farm to run and two small children to raise, writing was shelved for 20 years. When I gave up judging horse shows I found myself with a lot of free time. I dug out all my writing stuff and began writing again.
When I started to reconnect with the writing community I found that technology had sprinted way ahead of me.
During this time I relearned the whole publishing business, and took courses on marketing as well as a few to brush up on my writing skills. Its been quite the journey so far.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

Sylvia Day, Maya Banks, Julie Ann Walker, Jenna Jacobs, Cheries Sinclair, Winter Travers, just to name a few.

What are you working on now?

I am in edits for Cowboys Tribulation, due out April 30.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

I use to be just a panster but recently have begun to plot out full novels. This is something new for me. Usually I only write out a basic idea of a plot and then run with it. Either way I find both useful.

#WOTR #Spotlights – Teresa Gabelman @TGabelman

Teresa Gabelman

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Teresa Gabelman. I like to take long walks while thinking of hot, sexy vampire warriors. HA! No, seriously I’m just some chick, old chick, who likes to write stories that people will enjoy. I love reading and my favorite genre is paranormal, but you will find me reading about anything when I have time to read. Spending time with my family and dogs, fishing, reading and writing are pretty much on my top most favorite things I like to do. I love my readers and connecting with them is probably my favorite part about being a author.

When and Why did you start to write?

Years and years and years ago. You know I get asked this a lot and there are a few different reasons, but I think the one that really got me to give it a go was when I would read I’d want the guy to do this or the girl to do that. I always thought what if. In no way did I think I could write a better book, nope, that had nothing to do with it. I just wondered what it would be like if I could make the guy and girl do what I wanted them to do.

Plus I’ve always had a vivid imagination as a little girl, still do as a old chick and writing is my outlet. No, I didn’t daydream about sexy vampires as a little girl, but Donny Osmond did save me a few times as did Leif Garrett. I’m sure a majority of you are going to say…’who in the hell is Donny Osmond and Leif Garrett?’ Well I will just tell you, they were HOT back in the day…nuff said. 🙂

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I love Sherrilyn Kenyon, but I always and I mean always suggest my indie author friends such as Kym Grosso, Victoria Danann, Theresa Hissong and the list goes on and on. Writing so much it’s hard to read and I miss it so much.

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

The writing process itself would probably be the characters talking to me, meaning, I write a lot in my head so I have the story going before I even hit the computer. So there I am with my Diet Pepsi just minding my own business and typing away when all of a sudden I read what I wrote and it is not what I thought of an hour ago coming home from the grocery story. So, my characters like to screw with me in that way and just between us….their ideas are sometimes better than mine.

There was a panster or plotter question below and this is why I answered that question as I did. Can you guess which I am?

What are you working on now?

I am working on Blaze, the 10th book in the Protectors Series. Then I will be finishing the third in the Lee County Wolves. I also have a book that was released in the Taming The Vampire Box Set called The Enforcer which, because the readers asked that it be a series, is going to be a series and the second book will be written after the third in the LCW. What the readers want the readers get. I also have something a little ‘hush hush’ going on that I am working on. 😉

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

Oh, I’m a big pantser….a BIG pantser. Wish I was a plotter, but oh no, my characters totally stopped that process.

#WOTR #Review – RUSH (Montgomery Men #1) by C.A. Harms

RUSH (Montgomery Men #1)

I was running from my husband, a man I thought I’d known. Running from the hell he had put me through.

He’d nearly destroyed the woman I had once been and I would do whatever it took to regain my freedom.

I would lie, and cheat. I would steal if it meant that I never had to go back there.

I’d run and keep running…

But there was one problem. I hadn’t planned for Ashton Montgomery.

He was a distraction I couldn’t allow. Not if I wanted to stay safe. I had to remain distant, but he was relentless and had other ideas.

I caved because I hadn’t thought it all through, not in detail.

If I had I would’ve realized that you can only live in a fantasy world for so long before everything came crashing in around you.

And those lives you’ve destroy along the way, make you no better than the monster you were trying to break free from.

How could I have been so careless? It wasn’t meant to turn out this way. But the Rush of my freedom took control and I forgot how important it was to keep the secret of who I had once been.

And now I had nothing…

Only the fear that the man I’d run from would find me again, and finish what he started.

EARLY REVIEWERS ARE LOVING IT!
–Rush, is written superbly. From start to end all the words piece together beautifully. The story line flows easily through a very solid foundation. The angst ranges from light to heavy to “damn my breath has gone”. Rush is indeed a Rush of epic proportions!

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

Oh my!!  SOOOO uhm yeah…*Blushes* hey Ashy How are you? *Gulps* uhm Knox I didn’t see you there stalking the background. *eyes bug out* Hey Beckett you’re here too. *Whispers to self* I don’t think I can handle all the Montgomery Bothers in the same room at the same time!!  WAY TOO MUCH HOT FOR ONE GIRL!!

Ok so yeah those Montgomery guys are yum.  They are alpha.  They are cocky.  They are arrogant and they are my dream come true!!  LOL  I am totally loving Ash but I gotta say I am prolly licking Knox and calling him mine…juuust staying.

Ash is a total player and if you think he is going to be more than a one night stand, you my friend are stupid.  Ash won’t be tricked into anything and he can’t trust anyone so why even attempt it.

Kins has lived a nightmare.  She is married to a monster who she barely escapes when she goes on the run.  She ran and ran and ran right into Ash.

As much as she fights it is as much as he chases.  When she finally decides to stop living in fear and try to live again they couple explode with hot times……and then we are feeling Kins and her guilt…..she loves Ash but she can’t tell him the truth.  He husband will stop at nothing to get her back.

I gotta say,  I loved dominate Ash but that sweet and gentle Ash won my heart.   I liked the storyline and felt horrible when Ash discovers things about Kins but also wanted to throat punch him a few times too.  His assistant Lex WAS HILARIOUS and I so hope he gets an HEA!!   I am so excited for the next book because Beckett seems like he is mega serious guy and love is going to knock him off his rocker.  However, I notice that this means my boyfriend Knox is last…sigh…fine CA be that way!!

A little about me. Let’s see where to start.
I love HEA stories, as long as they come packing a little heat. I need some excitement, some angst, and moments that make me fan my face are always good too. I am an Illinois girl, born and raised. Simple and true, it honestly doesn’t take much to make me happy. I love the little things; they truly mean the most. I may have a slight addiction to my new Keurig—oh my, that thing is a godsend. And so fast too. I have two children who truly are my very best friends, and their faces never fail to put a smile on my face. I have been married to my husband for sixteen years, and even though at times I want to beat him with a stick, I would never change the years we have had. We have learned and fallen, only to pick each other up, dust off the ache, and help each other make it right.
I am one of those authors that adore my fans. I love to hear from you. After all, it is because of each one of you that I continue to write. I look forward to your feedback.
Be sure to follow me to stay up-to-date on all my upcoming releases.

#WOTR #Spotlight – Maggie Adams @AuthrMaggieAdms

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hello, lovely people! I’m Maggie Adams, author of the best-selling Tempered Steel Series. My first book, Whistlin’ Dixie, a Tempered Steel Novel, debuted at #83 on amazon’s Top 100 in women’s fiction-humor. I write small town romance filled with humor, suspense and erotic sex scenes. In other words, I write about life! I’m married to my high school sweetheart, have two talented children, both married, and a beautiful baby granddaughter.

I also write erotica, paranormal and young adult romance and suspense. So look for me in almost every genre!

When and Why did you start to write?

I’ve always loved books and would often continue the stories in my head with my favorite characters. I don’t really recall exactly when I started writing them down; they’ve just always been with me. I wrote the Tempered Steel Series after my hometown was devastated by a flood, and the story just flowed through me. I decided to try and publish it by myself, with the help of my tech savvy kids, and voila’, I’m a published indie author!

I can’t think of any career more rewarding or challenging. I love every minute of it, especially hearing from my fans and new readers. So drop me a line! I’ve always got time for a chat.

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

Oh my tastes have varied through the years, but a good story is a good story. Classic Historical romance is Kathleen Woodiwess. I love Jayne Ann Krentz and how she merges her storylines with her other personas in historical and futuristic novels; erotic suspense has to be Lexi Blake and Shayla Black; and contemporary romance I always one-click my book bestie, Renee Kennedy, but I’ve met so many wonderful authors in the past two years, it’s almost impossible to list them all!

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

I often start out with a loose plan on how the plot is going to go, but somewhere along the line, the characters and dialogue take over and I’m just along for the ride! No matter what, it always makes for an interesting story.

I love the writing process, even the blocks, because it makes me really think about how I want the story to end, as well as expanding my knowledge of many different subjects due to the research involved.

What are you working on now?

I just finished book six in the Tempered Steel Series, Cold As Ice., so I’m working on the seventh and final book to the Tempered Steel Series, Tempered with Love. Although the Coalson family saga may be coming to an end, its not the end for them, as they will pop up in my new paranormal series.

I’m also collaborating on a new series with Renee Kennedy, Heather Szczesiak and Jenni Wynne, as well as a young adult series, the Hot Mess sisterhood with Renee Kennedy, and an erotic series with new erotic author, M. R. Cummings, so I’m pretty busy.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

Oh I’m a little bit of both. As I said earlier, I have a loose plan of where the book or series need to go, but the voices in my head lead the characters to new paths all the time and I just tag along.

It all works out in the end and makes for a pretty interesting story, or so I’ve been told.

#WOTR #Spotlight – Dakota Trace @dakota75

Dakota Trace

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi I’m Dakota Trace. I’ve been writing professionally since 2008, but when I’m not clacking away at the keyboard, you can find me putting around the garden, out on the marching band field or cooking up something yummy in the kitchen for my kiddos.

When and Why did you start to write?

I’ve been writing for a long time. I think I wrote my first story in third grade – one about an older sister who had to teach her baby sister all about life. (I was quite precocious at age 8.) The teacher was so impressed, she stapled it together, like a real book and put it in the school library.

I didn’t start my serious writing however, until I was in junior high. My eighth grade language arts teacher caught me scribbling in a notebook in class and asked me to read it. With her encouragement, and a lot of support from my dad, I wrote my first full length story that year – about a girl who could talk to animals. Since then I’ve written numerous full length books and short stories.

However, the why is quite simple. Not only is it an escape from my hectic life as mom to three teenagers, it also gives the voices in my head an outlet. 😉

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

I devour most paranormal books. I love shifter series, particularly those by Shelly Laurenston, Lora Leigh, and Laurann Dohner. But you can also find me reading Draven St. James, Josh Landon, and Cherise Sinclair.

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

That when I started writing I was a 100% panster. I let the story take me where it wanted and if I had to cut out huge chunks during edits, okay, it was part of the process. Now, 10 years later, I’m a total plotter. I sit down fill out a GMC for my book before I even start writing it.

What are you working on now?

Right now I’m working a paranormal polar shifter book. I haven’t dabbled in paranormal for awhile, even though I love to read it. And thought it would a nice change from my sexually charged and intense bdsm books.

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

Plotter, now. I use both a GMC and Beats worksheets to make sure that I stay on track.

#Review – Twisted Bonds by: Brandy L. Rivers

33547027

Isadora Starling is ready to say I do to Toryn Flame. Her parents are finally tying the knot in a double ceremony. This is the first time she’ll be introduced to the fae as the princess of the air and fire realms.

Lines are blurred. Friends and enemies are tied together in surprising ways. The truth becomes murky as more details are uncovered. Danger lurks around every corner as new alliances are formed.

When those she trusts go missing, Isa will have to shore up her courage and dig deep to find the answers before her happily ever after is demolished.

Goodreads

Amazon US

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Brandy has done it again, amazing story, amazing plot, loved the twist, and the fight scenes where does she come up with these.  The way she weaves a story together not only the main characters but the side ones too is astounding.

The bond that Isa and Toryn have is wonderful. They are planning their wedding but they have a certain someone that is determined to toss a monkey or should I say spider wrench in their plans. Before I get into that this is full of med doing what they think is best without including the ones they love and will impact the most in their decisions. So much forgiveness occurs between these chapters not only between Isa and her dad but Jackie and those she thought she would never see again.

I enjoyed the way Jackie and Eddie are weaved into this along with all the other characters. Something big is going to happen cannot help but feel all of this will come into play. The buildup to what is going to happen is agonizing in the beginning.

Let’s talk Kellan and Saressa for a minute. Loved the way Kellan learned to block his mother…after learning this all I could think was EPIC things are going to happen. Kellan I wondered the same thing Yes, mean one why are you being so nice and what do you have planned? Ok that is not exactly what he said but that is what I was thinking.   While on the subject of Saressa OMG the creepy crawlies Saressa’s carries around with her creeped me out just about if not more than Damha does.

If you have not checked out this series What are you waiting for? The strong females Brandy writes are next to none and the battle scenes holly crap where does she come up with these. I was in Aww of the fight with Damha, spider boy, and Isa WOW can she fight. Can I just say I want to see Xander find a mate one that is strong and will keep him on his toes and walking the line. I am so ready for another book in this series.

A few of my favorite lines:

“Ah, but from the moment I laid eyes on you, I was yours to command. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

“You can’t change the past, you can only move forward”

Brandy L Rivers is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. She is kept busy writing the Others of Seattle, Others of Edenton, Combustible, and the Pine Barrens Pack series.
An avid reader, Brandy has always loved writing. She became serious about it as a stay-at-home-mother. With every story her world of characters expands, pulling her new directions.
Living in rainy Western Washington with her husband and three kids, Brandy is already working on future stories in each of the series, and several other projects.

#Release #Review – Ren: The Monster’s Death Book 4 by Sarah Noffke

34197550

Ren Lewis is the most powerful man in the world and he’s about to prove it. God, Ren believes, has battled him his entire life, trying to use him as a pawn or punish him for his wrong doings. This man, with powers most can’t fathom, has been content to use his skills to help humanity. However, when God makes a move that will carve out Ren’s heart for the rest of his life, he makes the decision to finally outmaneuver the Almighty Creator. Using technology, philosophy, quantum physics, psychology and spirituality, Ren attempts to do something that millions of people throughout history have only dreamed of. Because he’s a strategic man, Ren plans to break God’s laws and be the first human to ever do the unspeakable.
This last installment in the Ren series is the final evolution in a man’s life who thought he never should have been born. Ren’s journey teaches him that not only does he have a heart, but that as powerful as he is, he is nothing without the love in his life. Ren Lewis will gain the power to hack the system to beat God at his own game, but will he be successful or banished to solitude?

Goodreads

Amazon US

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the final in the Ren series I am sad to see it end but can I just say the emotional roller coaster in this one was real. I love Ren and his heart, he has me giggling at times and completely wrecked me at others. I enjoyed seeing a new side to Ren. He is on a mission and he will not be stopped. He is still trying to fix the world but also has his own mission going. The bond between Ren and his family is more than amazing. Even though Ren does not believe he can love with the monster that is in him it still finds a way to peek our every now and then.

The moments Ren has with Adailine, Trey and even Lucin was heartfelt and heartbreaking at the same time. The friend and family bonds are strong.

The ending was great but I really would like to see more of Adailine and see Lucin grow and find his power.  So long Ren it was a great run. I do have to ask is this truly the end or is there more to the story?

This deserves waaaay more than 5 stars! Just amazing, wow…speechless. If found myself speechless a lot during this book. I assume that if you are reading this you have followed Ren (if not, you must start now!) Ren has always been a snarky, no nonsense, pain in the rear Brit. But we find out that he is truly miserable. He is about to lose all his marbles and is going against the great creator, God. He is determined to turn things around to make things right for himself and the love of his life. Neither can survive without the other. This story is full of surprises. All about second chances and finding great gifts in the midst of tragedy. Death never fails to deliver but can he change this? Change fate? Ren will show you exactly how many layers he has and the pure strength that he has to go the distance for all his loved ones. If you haven’t fallen in love with Ren yet, this will surely change your mind. Sarah Noffke has a way with words. She knows exactly how to entertain me but twist my heart around and make it hard to talk for a while 🙂 I was on the edge of my seat constantly trying to figure out the next move. The Ren series is extremely awesome and very unique (haha! Sarah I hope you caught that – Ren thinks that this is simply a waste of words). This is one of my favorite series of all time. But wait til the end….I think there will be a surprise!

Sarah Noffke writes YA and NA sci-fi fantasy and is the author of the Lucidites, Reverians, Ren and Vagabond Circus series. She holds a Masters of Management and teaches college business courses. Most of her students have no idea that she toils away her hours crafting fictional characters. Noffke’s books are top rated and best-sellers on Kindle. Currently, she has eleven novels published. Her books are available in paperback, audio and in Spanish and Italian.

Chapter One
Legacy Gym

Present day

I look around the gym. The walls are black and mirrored, the floor is black cement covered in red mats. The back wall, where all our daily equipment is stored, is covered floor to ceiling in black lockers. Hand wraps, gloves, medicine balls, headgear, nut cups, first-aid equipment, and clothing that have our logo on them.

Our logo. I am a part of something. There was a time in the not so distant past when I wasn’t sure I would ever be anything. There are still days I couldn’t give a shit less if I do.

To the left are sparring mats and a few pieces of cardio equipment. To the right are free weights, a few high-end weight training machines, five heavy bags, seven speed bags, and five timing bags. In the middle is where I prefer to spend my time and energy. The cage.

I look at the large clock hanging above the doorway to our office. Nine-thirty at night. That means I have been here for thirteen and a half hours.

Eight hours would send a normal man my age running home to his family, to a hot meal, or to a bar where he could have a drink and relax with his friends. I am not a normal man.

Normal men don’t have blood on their hands, and if they do, they have it with remorse in their hearts, or the blood came from fighting a greater cause. The blood on my hands came from an anger that took control, from the rage within me, a rage that still controls me.

“Put one foot in front of the other. Stand tall and proud. Make the decision that you are both of those things and never let them think any differently. You are a good man, a good kid. Your past doesn’t define you; your present and future do.”

Shaw, my father’s oldest and closest friend, words ring inside my head as I look at the picture of him, Jagger, and I hanging on the wall, illuminated by bright white up-lighting.

If only putting one foot in front of the other wasn’t so hard. The weight of the world is heavy on my neck, making holding my head high almost impossible.

Shaw believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Now Shaw is gone.

After killing the lights and locking the doors, I let out a breath and walk toward the door in the back left-hand corner of the gym that leads to my apartment upstairs.

I stand in the apartment above Legacy, a gym that Jagger Caldwell and I inherited. A gym that trains people like me. It was willed to us when Shaw’s fight with cancer ended.

I suppose he did it to make sure his promise to his best friend, my father, was kept. He made sure I had something, an income, a place to live—a piece of something tangible while I served out my parole sentence for a crime I committed eight years ago.

Honestly, it feels more like a curse, a cage, a confined space, than a new beginning.

My body aches. It’s bruised and sore, all feelings I not only accept, but embrace. The harder I push myself, the more men I get in the cage with to train, the more hits I take, the closer I get to controlling the fury that simmers just beneath a boiling point inside my soul.
I walk to the bathroom and stand in front of the distressed mirror above the small sink that is rust-stained from the constant drip of a faucet that I keep telling myself I will fix, but I have no intention or desire to do so.

I strip off my sweat-drenched clothes and turn toward the shower to start the water. It takes a good five minutes for it to heat enough for my liking, and while I wait, I brush my teeth and open the cabinet.

I stare at the last bottle of pain meds prescribed to Shaw. I pocketed them after he died when the rage became worse. It is a battle of wills to tame the beast inside me. Waking up and looking in the mirror, knowing what I did and why I did it.

I twist off the childproof cap and count as I dump the pills out into my hand. Twelve. I have twelve nights left to sleep, and then the nightmares will ensue. I make a mental note to space the pills out to every third day. I can do without sleep for that long, no more.

I let them fall one by one back into the bottle, except one, as I feel my exhausted body become tense again. Anxiety is starting to creep in, so I take the last pill in my hand, toss it in my mouth, and swallow it down.

Before the pill’s effects kick in, I get in the small shower and bend so the water falls over my head instead of hitting the middle of my shoulders. When the water starts to run cold and I feel a bit drowsy, I step out, towel my hair lightly, and then drop it to the floor, allowing my body to air dry. Then I look up at my reflection and see a man who looks much older than his twenty-five years.

My eyes, once bright green and alive, are now dead and unreflective of feeling. My hair, once cut close to my scalp by my father’s own hand, is now well past my shoulders and a mess of brown waves. It’s only down after a shower or bedtime; otherwise, it is always tied up in a knot on the back of my head. I don’t have any damn desire to go to the barber. That would mean I would have to talk to someone. I’m functioning just fine here without making those types of connections, and there is no appeal in changing that up.

I run my hand over my beard. It’s been three days since I last groomed. I shave every fourth or fifth day, but never down to the skin.

I am six-foot, five-inches of intimidation. I weigh in at two hundred and forty-eight pounds of muscle, and my skin is covered in black prison ink. I have no desire for anyone to look at me and become confused as to who I am. No desire to have someone look at me and want to know more about me, or who I was. I have no desire for anything but the occasional release I can get anywhere. All I have to do is force a smile and say a word or two in order to get that need met.

My appearance is intimidating. It keeps people away. I’m not trying to give off the illusion that I’m unapproachable. Illusion would imply it wasn’t real.

It is real.

I am Michelangelo Mazzini. I was once called a saint by my peers, my teachers, and anyone who knew me.

Not anymore.

Now I am known as Kid.

I lay on the king-sized mattress that sits in the middle of the floor and stare at the ceiling, waiting, waiting, waiting for sleep to take me. The numbness that is my life isn’t holding me back. Rather, it’s my mind that won’t turn off, waiting for the next move.

I try not to close my eyes on my own. I wait for exhaustion and the drugs to do the work for me. Otherwise, I will be fighting a losing battle.

Chapter Two
Tatum

“Tatum, this is not what’s selling anymore. We need something …” Melanie pauses as she sighs.

Melanie and I have been friends since I sat next to her in a Shakespearian literature class we both enrolled in as an elective while attending Columbia for our Masters’ programs. Hers was in the classics; mine was in religion and journalism.

She loved fiction,a story you could get lost in, and I loved nonfiction, a story that didn’t allow you to run from your boring life, but showed you a life that you could get lost in and know it was real. Fairy tales were never meant to be believed in. They are stories written to scare children into behaving or else, so why waste time on them? Show them how to cope, what to avoid, and maybe a story that inspires them to do the right thing of their own accord.

She is the yin to my yang, the spring to my fall, the day to my night. The point is, she’s the lost-in-her-head kind of daydreaming chick, whereas I am the one who wants to get lost in reality to avoid getting lost in my head, and worse yet, believing that shit is even possible.

I am sure she has no other writers like me on staff. I am sure of this because one night, over drinks at Hotel Empire, she told me so. She told me in the sweetest way she could that I was my own worst enemy. That I had talent in abundance and was just too stubborn for my own good, and that if I were anyone other than “the Tatum” that played her Romeo a couple years ago, gaining us both an A in that godforsaken class, she would have walked away a long time ago.

We are opposites in our views on life, but who we are on the inside isn’t much different from the other. Both of us left our hometowns, knowing we were destined for greater things. And unlike most, we are willing to work our asses off to become. It landed us both in New York City, a city where we knew no one and no one knew us. A city that I swear wants to eat up young girls’ dreams and spit them back in your face.

Nothing about here is easy. What it is, though, is real. It’s gritty, it’s hard, and it’s all-consuming. If you can live here, you can live anywhere. Mark my words.

I know she could walk away at any moment, but Melanie would never. Even if she should run and not look back, that’s not who she is. It’s not who we are together.

We are forever friends, through thick and thin. The type of friends who you could talk to once every six months and pick up right where you left off. Though, in reality, we may go weeks without speaking due to work, but we have never gone more than a month at the most. She is my soul sister, and I am hers.

A few years ago, Melanie took an internship at a mid-sized literary agency, and I took off to write a story that would rock the world. I gave her, A View from Home, a novel about the foster care system in our country, and she went over the head of the man she worked for who said, “It wasn’t good enough” and emailed it to a company contact at Random House Publishing, where they not only bought the book, but hired her that day.
She became a junior editor at Random House, and I became a novelist. She became a senior editor when my first book put me on the New York Times Bestseller list. The subsequent three novels hit the list as well. Acclaimed awards, Wall Street Journal, and we were both riding a high of dreams coming true.

I can hear as she taps her long fingernails on her glass top desk, and then I hear the bell go off inside her head.

“Raw.”

“I’m giving you raw. I’m giving you real. I am giving you what people go through every day,” I tell her, trying to keep my annoyance at bay. After all, she is trying to help me.

“The market has shifted, Tatum. What’s selling is not this.”

I hear a thud and am certain it’s the manuscript I sent her. She prefers e-mail; I don’t.

“Then I’ll self-publish,” I threaten, and she audibly hisses into the phone, saying nothing.

This is new territory for us both. I love Melanie. I love working with her. Unlike the horror stories I hear about publishers washing out an author’s voice in edits, she doesn’t do that to my work.

“You still there?” I ask.

“I am,” she says firmly then pauses. I hear a door shut, then her heels click across the floor before she sighs out, “Please, Tatum. Please give me something that will blow the roof off this place. I know you have it in you. I know you do. Just let it happen.”

“Do you need this, Melanie?” I ask, wondering why she suddenly wants to mold my work into a completely different realm than I have ever written.

“Yes. Yes, I do. We both do.”

I sigh, feeling the weight of her world and my own landing firmly on my shoulders. “Okay, give me two months.”

“One,” she says, her edge returning.

“You have to push, don’t you?” I half-laugh.

“You taught me how,” she returns with a smile in her voice.

“Talk later.” I start to end the call.

“Wait! It has to be hot, Tatum. I need your voice, but bring the damn heat.”

“Melanie …”

“You’re gonna need to put yourself out there.”

“Meaning?” I have no idea why I ask when I know damn well what she is getting at.

“When’s the last time you actually got your peach plucked?”

“That’s none of your business,” I say with no intention of answering her, especially when she uses words like “peach plucked.” That’s up there with “moist” in words I would rather not use or hear reference to in sexual situations.

“You need to go find yourself a sexy, suit-wearing mogul,” she suggests.

“I’m in Detroit, Mel.” I sigh. “Remember, I was going to show the times in Motor City. A whole look back and look forward.”

I hear her nails tapping her keyboard. I know damn well she’s googling where to find the perfect place for inspiration.

“Get your ass to Texas.”

“I’m here for a month.” I stand with my phone in my hand, looking out the hotel window at what I know from pictures was once a beautiful city.

The river is mucky, the boats decrepit, and the cracked sidewalks once were beautiful. Detroit was something a long time ago.

“Right,” she sighs. “You can’t change your plans for the eye candy and your best friend?”

I laugh. “Melanie, this is all set up. Money spent, timelines sorted. I’m willing to think outside the box and shift my focus, but I can’t uproot my plans and still feel like I’m not insane.”

“Okay, okay,” she concedes.

“Goodnight, Melanie.”

“Goodnight, Tatum,” she says with a softness in her tone that is without a doubt caused by the stress I just alleviated.

Hers is gone, and mine has returned. Yin and yang. Night and day. We are never on the same page, but the balance is and always has been there.

I sit down on the chair next to the small table by the window, grab the glass of sweet red wine I had just poured, and take a drink. It’s sweet, crisp and, God willing, it will help me sleep tonight.

I drink the entire glass, and then pour another before reaching across the table to grab the manila folder and drag it closer to me. I look through the pictures from the 1950s: the new buildings, the finely-dressed people on the streets, the cars. The streets were full of them, all shiny and new. Detroit used to be spectacular. I know it was; the proof is in the pictures. But it is not anymore.

All that glitters does not always remain gold.

All that once was beautiful doesn’t remain so.

All that was lost will not necessarily be found.

Time does not stand still.

I stand up and stretch my neck as I walk over and grab my laptop, carrying it back to the table and opening it up. Then I click on the new document and title it:Mommy Porn.
“To new beginnings,” I toast the air then take a sip.

There is a saying in the writing industry: “write drunk and edit sober.” I guess I will give it a try tonight.

Sweet Jesus, am I really going to do this?

For Melanie, I will.

New York Times best selling author, Tatum Longley, is being forced out of her comfort zone. Her publisher needs her to change from hard hitting nonfiction to romance writing.
But first she must find a muse.
Angelo has no desire to form relationships with anyone around him. But when a very persistent Tatum makes him an offer that nearly knocks this six foot five, long haired, tattooed, dangerous looking man, on his ass.
Will he be able to resist the temptation, or will be allow her to use him.
