Paper Tigers (Fear University, Book 4)

Fear University has created a new monster …

The infamous fear switch research started with me, Patient Zero. But I am a failure. My mind adapted and now I move through the shadows like the creatures I was created to hunt. I spent my entire life in a cage with scalpels in my brain, but I am finally free—thanks to the Commander.

I am Zero, and I will make the bad men at Fear University pay.

I, Ollie Volkova, have returned to Fear University to rebuild and restore the school to its former standard of protecting the world against monsters, both human and aswang. But something new is killing Original families all over Kodiak Island and nearly assassinated the president of my university. The hunters call it a ghost, but I know she’s something more. Something worse than monsters and men. Something like me.

Fear University is my home, and I will kill to protect it.

Goodreads

It’s truly an intense story and this series has made it to one of my all time favorites. It’s an action packed thriller with some craziness on the side. More please! This series goes along with some Filipino folklore that I never knew existed. This author has brought Aswangs to life in this series along with some new monsters that we love to hate. Ollie is our lead female, she is a strong warrior halfling (half human and half aswang) that has come back with a vengeance. She has come back to bring Fear University to its former glory but is then put on hold due to some gruesome deaths. There is a “ghost” that lives in the shadows, going on killing sprees and has Fear University in it’s sights. Turns out that this ghost is actually the first “successful” experiment with the fear switch. But Zero adapted and now is on Fear University’s radar. There is so much more going on behind this part of the story. Sunny is working on an antidote for the aswang saliva, Hatter is still manic, and Luke is still in love with Ollie. People are scared. Some are running and some are fighting. Saviors or fighters? The group has been put in some crazy situations, desperate times call for desperate measures. They are all holding on to themselves while discovering who they really are. And lets not forget their families….some make a reappearance in this story. Some heartfelt and some heart wrenching. I can’t wait for more! Meg Collett did it again!

Goodreads

I can’t even begin to tell you how good this book is. If you like twists and turns with thrills and, of course a little romance… then this is the book for you. This is one of those stories that kept me up late and I couldn’t get it off my mind off of it. It’s a total mindf*ck with a ton of sweet and savage!

Allie is an orphan and was put into the foster system after her house caught fire and her parents died. She was pushed around the system not having a great childhood while living with Nana Mae. This woman had all kind of crazy, ridiculous things going on. Let’s just say that FIRE follows Allie around. there is a deep dark secret that she carries. One night there is a fire near her home and in comes a handsome fireman, Luke. Luke is smitten with Allie and can’t stay away from her. He tries to protect her but little do we know, Luke is carrying some pretty touchy secrets of his own. Someone is out to get Allie and Luke, along with his family are put right in the middle of the madness. No one knows why this is happening or who they can trust. There is sooooo much more to this story. Very twisted scenarios with surprise outcomes that will keep your head spinning!

The writing and world building are great. The characters are so real and will pull you into this story so fast! And the plot, well, it’s mind boggling in the best possible way. Definitely a page turner! A must read!

Modern day parnormal haunting with a historical twist. An intense read! Haunted houses, spectral memories, ghosts, haunted hearts…..Brad and Julie are a married couple who are also partners when it comes to buying and flipping houses. They are trying to get ahead and have come across the Bedlam House that is for sale for a price too good to pass up. Or maybe there is a reason it is so cheap. While Brad is starting the cleaning process of the house things take a terrible turn for the worse. Moods are changing, weird things are happening in the house, and their marriage could be put on the line because of some ghosts that just won’t leave. Brad and Julie are very easy to relate to and but have stumbled across strange happenings that can only be described as hauntings.

“I pity you. I would rather experience the limits of hope and despair rather than a cold, clinical existence where you never feel the depths of passion.”

“Love. It’s the great equalizer. Isn’t being loved or cherished enough to bring anyone peace? Sometimes I find that there was no haunted house, but a haunted heart.”

The Flip is a modern day romance with just the right amount historical fiction that will make your heart pump. You get to experience the entire story from all points of view, the living and the dead. A quick, hauntingly fun, read! Go grab it!

The Killing Season (Fear University 2) by Meg Collett

27823184

synopsis

In the far Alaskan north, there are places the winter sun cannot reach. Places where light won’t shine for months. These are the places we hunt the monsters who feed on fear.

So begins the Killing Season.

For the next sixty-five days, we will face the darkness. Some will hunt the aswangs in the ever night, but I, Ollie Andrews, am here for one purpose: to search for answers to my past.

They told us to fear the arctic tundra and the monsters hiding in the deep, dark shadows. But, locked inside a base known for driving even the best hunters mad, I fear it’s not the outside we should worry about, but the deepest, darkest parts of ourselves.

The real monsters are within.

When a brutal murder brings with it the secrets of Fear University—and the threat of an unknown killer on the loose—we all must fight to stay alive. But with madness and paranoia setting in during a whiteout snowstorm, all we can do is hope we don’t destroy ourselves before the sun finally rises again. Because no matter how hard we fight, reality will always threaten to tear us apart.

And when faced with the most terrible of truths, even the strongest break.

kellys review

This series is un-freaking-believable! I had such a book hangover from Fear University. I read it in one sitting and could not get it out of my head. Then I get the opportunity to read The Killing Season and Meg Collett did it again. The author had me completely sucked in from the start. I spent hours reading (trying to do housework and normal every day things) but noooooo! All I could think about is what is going to happen next. This series is so full of twists and turns that you get to the point that you are not sure if you can trust yourself, almost as if you are the bad guy! Ugh! Trust is a very valued commodity for this story and the rollercoaster of emotions and actions will keep you on your toes for the duration!

We start right where Fear University ends. Ollie and Sunny are sent with the other hunters to Barrow for the killing season. Hatter and Luke are with this group as well. With the exception of Luke’s mother and NyNy (the scientist), Ollie and Sunny are left alone in the estate during the day while the hunters are on their hunts. Some strange things are happening and Ollie is at the middle of it. They get some diturbing news about Peg, one of the hunters are murdered, and Luke’s father seems out to get Ollie but gives her a mission to find the leak within the University. One thing after another, after another keeps happening and Ollie keeps finding herself in the middle. Then the Taber’s reappear! Boom! More craziness! The story never slows down and holds you in it’s clutches to the very end.

“He thought we were too screwed up to be together, and maybe he was right. But I liked our kind of screwy. It was just the right kind of dark and twisted, sprinkled with the perfect amount of crazy.”

“I can love you because I know where all your cracks are. Because I know when you need to be cussed out and when you need to be held. I know how to destroy you and I know how to repair you. I know you’re not a good man, but I know you’re the best kind of man in the world: ruthless and wicked and loyal and brave. I’ll help you fix the cracks and keep out the shadows but only when you need me to. And when you want to kill your father, I’ll hand you the knife. When we go to kill Max, I know you’ll watch as I dig his grave, and afterward, when he’s dead, I know you’ll kiss my bloody lips and still love me just the same. That’s why I can love you, Luke. Because we’re the only ones who can love each other the right way.”

“You can be my monster in the dark and I’ll be the shadows to shield you.””

This story is all about finding out who you are, where you belong, and embracing it. Absolute must read!!!

REVIEW: Quiet Lies by R.L. Griffin

QUIET LIES

I was broken before I met Sebastian Pryor, but he decimated me. I swept the ashes of myself into a pile that I kept safe for thirteen years. Believe me it wasn’t pretty, oh but people thought we were perfect. I hate myself most days. I hate that I feel for him as much as I loathe who I’ve become with him. This story is hard to hear. You know what the worst part is? You’ll see part of you in me. You’ll hate that. You won’t tell anyone.

My story is about cracks. A description or telling of how cracks in a marriage, a life, a personality, a heart and a mind begin and continue for years without anyone knowing. You don’t always see what causes the fissure, but you feel it. Can you remember who you were before all of this started, before your life became a jumble of deceit, longing and regret?

This book isn’t for anyone who needs a happily ever after.

This book isn’t for anyone who needs a fun time out from their life.

This book isn’t for anyone, but me.

This is my story. I won’t apologize for it.

TWINSIE DEB’S REVIEW

Quiet Lies by R.L. Griffin
Rebecca & Sabastian
AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER
4.5 Stars.

So, this is another one of those reads suggested to me from my pal Jo! She really knows how to pick ’em. This one is all over the globe! I still can’t decide if I love it, if I hate it, or if I just merely hate myself for loving such a fucked up story. It’s a total mind fuck and will leave you reeling for days. I feel lost, yet more empowered after reading this book. These characters will take you on a journey that you won’t soon forget.

Sabastian Pryor is many things. He’s a calloused business man. He’s a fairly good father. He’s a personable kind of guy, and most importantly, he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Everything from the outside looks picture perfect, but behind closed doors, they’re anything but. He cheats, he manipulates, and he uses any means necessary to get what he wants. I honestly thought I loved him in the beginning. I thought this guy can’t be that bad. Just wait!

Rebecca is a fanatical conundrum. She messed with my head more than I think Sabastian did. One day you think she’s got her head on straight and she’ll make the right decision, and then the bottom drop out on you because she doesn’t. I can’t tell you how many times I yelled out loud at my kindle over this woman and her fucked up life. She’s plays the part of a happy housewife and mother, but she’s slowly dying inside. She may seem totally gone, but there’s still a shred of the old Rebecca in there. She will surprise you and keep you on your toes. Pay attention!

The supporting character cast is not big. There are few people who don’t even get a second glance once they’ve been introduced. A few faceless people that Rebecca has to deal with at her son’s school. Rebecca’s Mother makes few appearance and I’m pretty sure that woman has a screw or two loose also. A few people from Rebecca’s past, none to really make a stink about… but there is one guy who bares mentioning… Adrian! This man saved me from complete and utter panic. He saved us all, well, mostly! I can’t really say much more about him, but you’ll see!

So, this one is a doozie! It’s complicated and complex. It’ll have you guessing and hoping till the very last part! It’s a very compelling story. It’s characters exceedingly powerful. The storyline is a little difficult to follow as it flips back and forth from past to present. Sometimes I wasn’t sure what I was reading at times, but the dialogue flowed very nicely. The tension created by the author was just right and lead me to an ending that rocked my world.
