#truecrime #audiobook The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy: The Shocking Inside Story written and narrated by: Ann Rule

A #1 New York Times Best Seller, Ann Rule’s The Stranger Beside Me gives us a unique perspective into the hidden world of Ted Bundy. Rule gives a chilling and intimate description of her time at a crisis hotline alongside her co-worker, the then charming, sensitive and trustworthy Ted Bundy, and the devastating realization that he was a brutal killer hiding in plain sight. After multiple arrests and an escape from jail, Bundy would later confess to the murders of at least thirty-six women and soon after was executed for three cases. Rule, a certified instructor for police training seminars, prosecutors and forensic science organizations, delves into how this savage killer — a man she thought she knew — could have fooled so many, including a professional like herself.

Now includes updated afterword written by Leslie Rule, Ann Rule’s daughter.

“The most fascinating killer in modern American history…Ann Rule has an extraordinary angle that makes The Stranger Beside Me as dramatic and chilling as a bedroom window shattering at midnight.” – New York Times

“As dramatic and chilling as a bedroom window shattering at midnight.” — The New York Times” – From the Publisher

“A shattering story…carefully investigated, written with compassion but also with professional objectivity.” – Seattle Times

“Overwhelming.” – Houston Post

Ann Rule is regarded by many as the foremost true crime writer in America, and the author responsible for the genre as it exists today. She came to her career with a solid background in law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

As a child, Ann spent her summer vacations with her grandparents in Stanton, Michigan, helping her grandmother prepare meals for the prisoners in the jail. She wondered why such friendly, normal appearing, men were locked behind bars, and why the sweet woman in the cell upstairs (who taught Ann to crochet) was about to go on trial for murder. That was the beginning of her lifelong curiosity about the “Whys” behind criminal behavior.

Following in the footsteps of her grandfather, a sheriff in Michigan, Ann joined the Seattle Police Department when she was 21, worked a year and a half, but couldn’t pass the eye test. After five years of rejection slips, she finally sold her first article for $35! Soon, she found her niche when she began writing for fact-detective magazines like TRUE DETECTIVE.

Ann was a full-time true crime writer from 1969 – 2015. Over the past 30 years, she has published 33 books and 1400 articles, mostly on criminal cases. Ann has a BA from the University of Washington in Creative Writing, with minors in Psychology, Criminology and Penology. She has completed courses in Crime Scene Investigation, Police Administration, Crime Scene Photography and Arrest, Search, and Seizure, earning her an Associates Degree from Highline Community College.

Ann not only attended several police seminars on organized crime, arson, bomb search, and DNA, but taught her own seminars to law enforcement groups, and was a certified instructor in many states on subjects such as: Serial Murder, Sadistic Sociopaths, Women Who Kill, and High Profile Offenders. She was a member of the U.S. Justice Department Task Force that set up the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VI-CAP), and testified twice before Senate Judiciary Sub-committees on victims’ rights and on the danger of serial killers.

Ann’s books deal with three areas: the victims’ stories; the detectives and prosecutors and how they solve their cases with old fashioned police work and modern forensic science; and the killers’ lives. Ann spent months researching for her books, investigating the killers’ early childhood, and even back into their family histories to find some of the genesis of their behavior.

Eight of Ann’s books have been made into TV movies, and five more are in the works. She won the coveted Peabody Award for the miniseries based on her book,Small Sacrifices, and has two Anthony Awards from Bouchercon, the mystery fans’ organization. She has been nominated three times for Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. She was also awarded the Washington State Governor’s Award. Ann is active in support groups for victims of violent crimes and their families, in programs to help battered and abused women, and support groups for children caught in traumatic living situations.

Ann Rule passed away in July of 2015.

From Ann Rule:

“My first book, THE STRANGER BESIDE ME, was about Ted Bundy, but, amazingly, I had the book contract to write about an unknown killer six months before Bundy was identified as the “Ted Killer.” And I had known him all along, and didn’t realize it; he was my partner in the all-night shift at Seattle’s Crisis Clinic!”

“To choose a book subject, I weed through about 3,000 suggestions from readers. I’m looking for an “anti-hero” whose eventual arrest shocks those who knew him (or her): attractive, brilliant, charming, popular, wealthy, talented, and much admired in their communities–but really hiding behind masks.”

Review by Twinsie Tenise

Wow! This was a compelling first hand account from somone who may have known Ted Bundy better than anyone. Her name was Ann Rule and she would later learn she was best friends with a serial killer. They worked together at a call center, clicked and were instant best friends. He was so kind to her, unlike how he treated his victims. For some reason he deemed her safe and would continue to try and keep her safe throughout their time knowing one another. To be Ann, a young writer looking for their big break when the story of a lifetime falls right in your lap. The moral delima she must have faced as the dots began to connect. I thank Ann for sharing her story. I am a true crime junkie and when I learned through a podcast about this book, I had to read it. I ended up listening to the audiobook narrated by the author this morning. It was an intimate telling of their story in her words with correspondence from him. I am so happy she decided to narrated it because I feel like she is the only person capable of telling this story. I know she wrote the book but I appreciate that she also voiced the audio version. She outlived Ed by well over 20 years,  after listening to this book I cannot even imagine all of the what ifs she lived with until her passing.

#Review – The Alpha and the Baker – By: Roxie Ray

A grumpy-sweet alpha. A broke but brilliant baker. One emergency cake order that might just be fate.

When Castiel’s pack reunion turns into a frosting-fueled disaster, the last thing he expects is to find salvation in the form of a tiny bakery—and the fiery, flour-dusted woman who runs it.

Felicia’s barely keeping her business alive, her heart is still healing, and she has zero time for distractions—especially not the ridiculously hot country guy begging for last-minute cakes. But with a hundred people waiting for dessert and a cash offer she can’t refuse, she says yes.

One rushed bake. Three ruined ovens. A van full of dreams.
And a connection that neither of them saw coming.

She’s a human with a whisk.
He’s an Alpha with responsibilities.
But when their worlds collide, it’s anything but half-baked.

Review by: Twinsie Melinda

I picked this book up from Amazon.

I enjoyed this sweet read. There was not too much drama just a rival pack, some cunning fairies, and a clever human baker.

I loved readding about Felicia and Castiel and seeing their relationship grow. Castiel is the alpha of his pack so when a young one in the pack has her firsts shift and takes out all the deserts for the family reunion Castiel needs to find a way to get them replaced and quickly. Castiel finds a Bakery that is open and the owner willing to fulfill the order and deliver it at that.

Felicia is trying to keep her family’s bakery a float but when more bills than customers are coming in it is an uphill battle.  Until Castiel comes in to place a LARGE last-minute order for his family reunion. Of course, Felicia agrees to make the treats and get them delivered. When she arrives to the delivery location, she is amazed by the size of Castiel’s family.  Can I just say I love Castiel’s pack there are so many characters and personalities I enjoyed each interaction. There was a mix-up as to who Felicia was by a blind elder and Felicia was given the special punch causing her to hang out longer with the clan.

This was a wholesome fun read. I loved seeing Castiel and Felicia banter and seeing where their relationship lead. I have to say the aunties and grandmas have a place in my heart I just loved seeing all of the interacting with everyone. There was just something likable about Felicia and everyone seen it even the rival pack.  I’m not sure that anyone even fairies were immune to Felicia yummy treats.

#DarkMM #tragicromance #audiobook Beneath His Robes by: SK Pryntz Narrated by: Vincent Graves

As old desires resurface, the line between sacrifice and obsession blurs, threatening to draw them both into a place they cannot escape…

I took a vow to God, to my faith, to my people. As a priest, I am bound by duty, but there’s something I can never escape—Ronan. He was my entire world. We were young, stupid, and full of dreams neither of us was able to express and when those feelings became too much, he left me.

I chose this life—a life of celibacy and sacrifice. I convinced myself it was what I wanted. To move on and let go of the past I could never have. To let go of him. But when he comes back whispering his sins and fantasies that all allude to being about me. His every word pulls me back where I can’t forget and awakens my own hidden desires.

I thought I had buried him—buried us—but the truth is, I never stopped loving him. He left to become someone else, someone who didn’t carry the weight of our love and I became suffocated within the confines of my collar. Now the temptation to cross every line I’ve sworn to uphold burns hotter than ever because he’s just within my grasp.

I should have never come back. But how could I stay away when the man I still love haunts my dreams? When I left, I thought I could move on, but the truth is—I never did. Despite the bodies I put beneath me, it was Elias I heard screaming my name. It was always him.

I came back seeking closure, but when I saw him again, standing there in his priest’s robes, cold and distant, I realized he wasn’t the sweet boy I had left behind. He had become a man—a man who made me realize I was still yearning to rekindle the fire I had extinguished out of fear all those years ago. I can’t stop myself from demanding everything I want and need from him.

I can’t stop begging for more. He may have made a vow, but I will show him that succumbing to me and allowing our fire to consume him will be greater than his heaven. I would worship every part of his body and soul. If he would just let me in…I would be his god.

Bound by duty and haunted by regret, Elias and Ronan are forced to confront a past that refuses to stay hidden. Elias, fixed in place by promises made long ago, is unable to shake the weight of a love that was never meant to be. Ronan returns like a restless force, pulling him back to what they once shared. Can they break free from the ties that bind them, or will they be forced to surrender to a past that still burns too brightly to forget?

What do you get when you have a horror lover with daddy issues?
A whorror author! I am all things gore and (w)horror!
My list of publications is the Reflections series, the connective Asylum Devils series, Bodies duet, Bloody Valentine from the St. Valentine series, and Mara of the Wellard asylum series.
I have a lot of works in progress and can’t wait to share them with you all!

Elias and Ronan have spent half a lifetime loving eachother from afar. Their story isn’t pretty. Its not a sunshine and roses love story.
No.
It was messy.
It was painful.
Tragic, intense and incredibly unfair.
As well as heartbreakingly beautiful.
No matter what they did, there was no escaping the other. Their love never waned no matter how many miles and years were between them.

My heart has never been more f’n broken by a book than it is right now. For the last 45-60 minutes I cried so hard, I couldn’t breathe. This was an epic love story. Ronan and Elias were IT for one another. They made one another so happy but there was always an obstacle. Their story was filled with so much darkness, angst and tragedy. They were healing from the past and were headed towards a future neither man had ever imagined.
I really am at a loss for what to say because I did not expect for it to hit me the way it did. Not to be too dramatic but I worry I may never fully recover from this one. It is now 7 hours later and my heart is still heavy af. I get it, the reason it was written as such but it still sucks. Annnnd here come the tears again. This was my introduction to SK Pryntz and I’m obsessed! The narrator, Vincent Graves was absolute perfection. Please voice more things because I need more of that sexy as sin voice in my audiobook life. I will listen to all the words you read. Your voice is ear candy, Sir. Uhhhh sorry, I’m getting way off track here.

5 absolutely soul crushing stars.
Even though I had no clue going in that this was a romantic tragedy, I cannot say if I would have even attempted to read it had I known. I guess I can’t be mad about it because sadness and heartache be damned, this book was addictive and intoxicating. Without a doubt one of the best books of the year. Time will not be able to erase Ronan and Elias’s story from my mind. I will carry them with me forever. Please read the lengthy trigger warnings. Beneath His Robes is not for everyone.

#mm #forbiddenromance #standalone Sins of the Father by: Isabel Lucero

He comes to me through a lattice in a confessional booth in my church.

He’s brash, vulgar, and confessing to things that would send him to hell, and yet, I find myself intrigued by the mysterious man.

His sinful words thrill me. His way of life, so different from my own, has me coveting excitement that’s long been missing. The more I’m around him, the more I realize how long I’ve been deprived of so much, and the more my own deviance begins to emerge.

On paper, nothing about the two of us makes sense, and there are many reasons why I should keep my distance. I try to be pious, but if anyone were to find the skeletons in my closet, I’d be excommunicated from the church.

When something from my past reveals itself, I find myself being pulled into a way of life I didn’t think would be in my future, and now I straddle the line between right and wrong. Morality vs necessity.

I’m a priest. He’s a murderer. But we’re both sinners.

Review by Twinsie Tenise

Javier is a career criminal. Hes the one The Boss calls when he needs someone “taken care of”.
Carlo is a man of God. People come to him to confess. This is how the two men meet but it seems now Carlo may be needing to make some confessions himself. Both men are keeping secrets and sometimes, no matter how hard we try to hide them, our secrets have a way of eventually coming to light. When they do decisions must be made but will any of those decisions include a happily ever after for Javier and Carlo? Is something like that even possible with a criminal and a priest?
Dude! You know that feeling when you finish a good book and you just pause to reflect on things? Okay, well imagine that happening every other chapter. Lucero has a certain finesse that leaves you wanting in the best way. As the book progressed, chapters didn’t just end and the next one start. No. The chapter would end and I would usually say dude, damn, or another 4 letter word, then pause in awe of the brilliance before continuing on. I’m adding this one to my reread pile. 5 holy stars!

#Review -The Sixth Hour by Mique Watson

Erin Shepherd runs away from home, certain she’s escaped the worst kind of monster.

Despite her homelessness, she believes the pain and torment is behind her when a kind stranger offers her food, safety, and a ride out of town.

She is wrong.

Now a prisoner, her life unravels into a waking nightmare of captivity, cruelty, and whispered promises of something waiting beyond pain.

Surrounded by horrifying atrocities and dark mystery, Erin begins to wonder if she is running from her fate or becoming it.

I’m going to start this by saying that I’ve read all of Mique Watson’s books. Even the ones he wrote for anthologies. So I went into this new one completely blind.

We meet Erin who was taken and thrown into a world of debauchery. She ends up down a dangerous path but as she’s learning the ropes of her new lifestyle, she quickly realizes that things aren’t exactly as they seem and she doesn’t know who she can trust.

Just when I thought that this book isn’t as bad as Mique’s other stuff or that it’s not as extreme or gross as I expected…um…yeah I was wrong. The things someone does for survival. I kept thinking to myself, nope, there is no way but at the same time, I’ve never had to deal with this sort of situation. So who actually knows how they’d react or what they would do given the circumstances. I’d like to think I’m strong and would also do anything to survive but I’m not actually sure.

I have to say that as someone with a uterus, one of the last scenes….holy crap on a cracker. What a way to go. It reminded me of Art from the Terrifier movies and what he liked to do to his victims. Wow. Mique, you upped your game with this one. I’m going to think of this scene every time I go for a physical now.

The ending of this book was NOT what I was expecting at all but like I’ve said many times in previous reviews for other books, Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Like always, I suggest going into this book completely blind. It’s more fun that way. But I will tell you that if you like cult horror or anything remotely having to do with cults, then this may be for you. While this book isn’t as gory as some of Mique’s other work, it’s definitely just as gruesome.
