#Review – 27 Truths by MJ Fields

27 Truths: Ava's Story (The Truth About Love, #1)

synopsis

From USA Today Bestselling author, MJ Fields, comes a gripping story of love and it’s many truths.

Ava Links was raised seeing the different sides of love.
The beautiful and the broken.
Through it all, she knows the journey she is taking will lead her to the man she is destined to be with. The man she has always loved, Luke Lane.

But as we know, there are no guarantees in this world, no promises that can not be broken, and no way you will know what tomorrow brings.

**** A note for the readers****

At present time, this story is slated as a duet. In the writing process things change. This story has been begging to be told for two years.
Although not necessary, The Love series, The Wrapped series, and The Burning Souls series can be read before The Truth About Love.

This is not Steel or Caldwell, but at the core is a strong family just the same. It does not promise an HEA or laughs. This is heart, heat, and will evoke feelings that are not always pleasant.

To the lovers of my first works. You have been patient. You have been… persistent. The wait is almost over.
After you read this, please remember you asked for it.
Love you anyways.

angies review

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

SOO I didn’t read the other books that these characters are from. I THINK that a maybe part of why I wasn’t a giant fan like others were…..I wasn’t totally invested in the characters like fans of the other books were.

Ava has been through a lot.  She loves Luke like crazy.  She has had her heart crushed by him and his Friends with Benefits desire.  When Ava finally decides to tell Luke her feelings….WOW is he a super DB and destroys her heart.  The stuff he says…Man he needed to have appendage attached to his short and curlies chopped off!!  But even after him destroying her, Ava is a glutton and goes back for more pain and heartache.  Was I teary, yes.  I mean if you aren’t you have to be a cold and heartless person.

But then right when you are lost and sad about Ava/Luke is when THOMAS comes in and saves the day.  He has loved Ava from afar and right when she is at her worst is when he comes to her and the things he says….sigh……

I am ready for the nest story in the duet to see what happens !!

about the author

USA Today Bestselling author MJ FIELDS grew up on a farm surrounded by her extended family. She attributes her ability to write a realistic male character to the fact that she had a large amount of male influences in her life… that and the dirty joke books she would steal from her uncles or the farms hired help and run away laughing while they chased her yelling obscenities trying to get her to return the books before her God fearing mother found out and spanked her butt with a flyswatter.

No she wasn’t physically abused, she very openly admits that she deserved every imprint left on her ass from the flyswatter. (Could this be why she loves tattoos? Maybe.) After each spanking she would run away, usually through the fields and down to the falls where she would laugh because it really didn’t hurt, while she read the book she had stolen and stashed when no one was looking.

When she wasn’t misbehaving she was working side by side with her male family members learning what hard work, loyalty, and dedication was all about, spending time with her grandmothers who taught her all about love and blind faith, or dancing and singing in the kitchen with her four siblings while her mother gave them all a childhood filled with love and encouragement to use their imagination and follow their dreams.

Her love of writing was in full swing by age eight. Together with her cousins, she wrote a ‘newspaper’ that they sold for ten cents to family members.
Her school years were spent hanging in the principal’s office or a shit list somewhere. Weekends she could be found spending time with her family or hanging out with more males than females, in the fields with tailgates down and a bonfire burning while music played loudly in the background. Some of those times ‘allegedly’ had alcohol involvement, she will neither confirm nor deny.

As an adult she self-published her first New Adult romance in January 2013. Today she has completed six self-published series. The Love series, The Wrapped series, The Burning Souls series, The Norfolk series, The Men of Steel series, and The Ties of Steel series. She also just released a book she wrote with five, yes five, other authors. It is her darkest book to date. The Original Sin is available now.

MJ has been told by several readers that they had never read a book that involved a Prince Albert piercing and although she cannot claim the title, it is said she may possibly be “The Pioneer of the Pierced Penis”, in the New Adult book world, of course. (Naughty naughty.)

MJ is a hybrid author who loves her readers and tries her best to write as much as she can for them. She believes she has the best reader’s crew in the entire world (many of us agree. Forever Steel baby). She publishes an Indie book almost every month. She is also signed with a traditional publisher, Loveswept, Penguin Random House, for her co-written series The Caldwell Brothers with Chelsea Camaron. Hendrix and Morrison, are available now. The third in the series, will be released on April 12 , 2016.

Her next Indie series is Rockers of Steel. Book one, Memphis Black and book two Finn Beckett are now available. River James is coming January 3oth, 2016. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but really who doesn’t want MORE STEEL!

There is always something new in the works and she has stories to write for her readers for years to come. Her alpha male characters are some of the best in the industry, but remember before they fall many of them can be considered crude, rude, pierced, and tattooed. (Just the way we like them!)

If you are offended by the ‘F’ word she advises you either take a pass on her books or pull up your big girl thong, sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy the ride. If you can’t handle the heat you should stay out of the … well the Steel and Sin book worlds anyways. If heat is all you’re looking for she insists you be warned the heat will draw you in, but the heart, depth, and emotion in the books will keep you

#promo #Excerpt – Texas Maverick by Sable Hunter and Ryan O’Leary

Texas Maverick (Texas Heroes)

synopsis

Maverick Cross is a Texas hero, not the flashy kind, he’s a war veteran who served his country overseas and now serves it at home as an Austin firefighter. To look at him, and women love to look, he’s a ripped athlete who takes care of himself and has it all together.
Only his next door neighbor knows the truth; Maverick suffers from PTSD.
Everly Winterfell is almost invisible, blending into the crowd is fine by her. She’s a hero too, not the kind who wears a cape, but the kind who isn’t afraid to dig for the truth and expose it for all to see. Everly’s alter ego is Eve Winters, an award winning journalist who doesn’t seek the limelight, she’s content with writing stories that change people’s lives without drawing any attention to herself.
Nothing much escapes Everly, she has a talent for seeing beneath the surface, reading people for who they really are. From her vantage point in Apartment #701, she has learned that the occupant in #702 is lonely. He has a habit of pushing people away before they can get too close, especially women. Maverick can offer a woman great sex, Everly can vouch for that fact. The walls are thin between #701 and #702 and many nights she has lain there wishing she was on the receiving end of his attention. He’s intrigued by his odd little neighbor, who seems to want to be his wingman and he has no idea that her ulterior motive is to be his friend. After some negotiations, they strike a deal – she’ll find him women who know the score, who won’t expect more than he can give, and in return he’ll see if he can advise her on how to attract a man for herself. To facilitate their odd arrangement, they install a chalkboard on the narrow wall separating their front doors, leaving messages about their shared adventures.
The more time they spend together, the less important finding dates for the other becomes. Everly and Maverick discover they share a chemistry that’s off the charts, they can’t keep their hands off one another. There’s only one problem – Maverick has no idea Everly is his secret obsession, Eve Winters. Sometimes what we need is right in front of our face. Sometimes what we’re looking for is right next door…

excerpt

“Maverick, it’s me. Everly.” He opened his eyes expecting to see flashes of gunfire and explosions from IED’s. Instead, he looked into delicate features, eyes warm with concern. “Everly?” “You were dreaming,” she whispered. Fuck, he was dreaming now. “What are you doing here?” She kept her hand on Maverick, seeking to soothe him. “I heard you through the wall.” Standing up, she stood next to the bed. “Do you want some water before I go?” “Did I hurt you?” He grabbed her hand, pulling her back down to sit on the bed. She twined her fingers with his. “No, of course not.” “Don’t go.” His hand came up to weave itself in her hair. “Where’s the whale spout, Tink?” “What are you doing?” she whispered as his other hand skimmed up under her shirt, caressing the soft skin of her back. “I need you,” he pulled her head down until their lips met. Now Everly thought she was the one who must be dreaming. Could this be real? His mouth moved on hers, a gentle graze that made it hard to breathe. She wanted to kiss him back so badly she could die. “Open.” His demand made every nerve ending in her body spark to life. There was no way on God’s green earth she could resist this man, she wanted him too much. Tentatively, she responded to his strength, his passion. Parting her lips, she touched the tip of her tongue to his and he groaned, pulling her to the bed beside him. Everly’s blood raced through her veins. She craved him – she craved his touch and she craved to touch him. Clutching his shoulders, she began to kiss him back with desperate intensity. Her surrender seemed to free something within him. Maverick began to devour her lips and she trembled as his big hands roamed all over her body. Never had she been kissed this way. His mouth on hers was the single most wonderful thing that had ever happened to her. A haze of desire clouded Maverick’s brain. Her body was soft and warm as his mouth blazed a trail across her face and down her throat. When his lips brushed the pulse point that betrayed her excitement, he knew he wanted more. Feeling the evidence of her surrender beating against his lips sent a hot rush of hunger to his cock. “You feel so good, baby.” Returning his mouth to hers, he kissed her as his hand found her breast underneath her shirt. Cupping the small mound, he pulled and tweaked the nipple until she shivered in his arms. When he removed his hand, she whimpered her disappointment until his teasing touch edged up her thigh. “Maverick?” “Shhhh, this dream is so much better than the one I just left.” Waking up wasn’t an option. He wanted this, he needed this. The fire between them was so unexpected he was shaking from it. His fingers were hovering very near paradise. He could already feel her heat. “Do you want me?” Please, God, say yes. “Oh, yes, I want you.” Maverick tried to catch his breath. “Take this off.” He tugged on her shirt. Everly sat up, glancing around the room, then at him. There wasn’t a lot of light in the room, but he’d be able to see her well enough. “Are you sure?” “Now.” She was of the firm opinion that she looked better clothed than naked, but his insistence pushed her doubts away. Skimming the shirt over her head, one hand instinctively came up to cover her breasts. “Don’t. I need this,” he muttered, grasping the offending arm blocking his view and pushing it over her head. In the dim light, his eyes focused on her breasts. Bending his head, he brushed his face against their soft swell, letting his lips rub over them. The woman was petal soft all over. Her breasts swelled at his touch, she couldn’t believe this was happening. Her voice caught in her throat, but she managed to speak. “Maverick?” “Hush.” He rubbed his thumb over her nipple, his mouth crashing into hers, kissing Everly until she had no breath left. Everly thought she would swoon. Her whole body lifted to his as he stroked and teased her breasts. She was shaking with need when his mouth finally closed over the aching peak, sucking the tender bud between his lips, grazing it lightly with his teeth. With a moan, she clutched his shoulders even as he passed a soothing lick over the sensitive spot. Maverick was consumed with desire. He wanted all of her. Bare breasts. Swollen lips. She was amazing and totally at his mercy. With unsteady hands, he covered her tits – cupping, kneading, relishing their weight and warmth. “Feel good?” “Oh, yes,” she moaned, arching her back. This was a fantasy, it had to be. His blood pounded through his head making him dizzy as he felt her gasp when he closed his lips around her, taking as much of her delectable tit into his mouth as he could. Her hands clasped his head, she begged for more and Maverick thought he would cum on the sheets if he didn’t get inside of her soon. “I can’t wait,” he murmured, rising into position over her. The lights from outside filtered through the drapes and he could see her face with her heart in her eyes. “Don’t wait.” Maverick couldn’t misinterpret the invitation when she shed a tiny pair of panties, then wrapped her legs around his hips. “I want you so much. Just remember, I’m not too good at this.” “Experience not required.” Running a hand between them, he made sure she was wet. Oh, hell yeah. She was ready and he was trembling, burning and aching to bury himself deep inside of her. Going to his knees, he took himself in hand, gliding the head of his cock through the slick heat of her pussy. Maverick held himself steady, muscles quivering, as he pressed into her, working himself in inch by inch. She was small and tight. His eyes crossed from the pleasure. “Okay?” “I’m good.” Yes, she was. Her little body seemed to grasp onto his greedily, as he pulled out, then slid all the way back in. “Oh, fuck,” he moaned, holding himself stiff. Supporting his weight by his arms, he gave himself time to get a grip. Beneath him, she wasn’t still. She held onto him tightly, urging him to move. And when he did – rocking, pumping – bucking his hips, the pleasure on her face was the biggest aphrodisiac of all. This was so good. He wanted it to last as long as possible. But his body had other ideas. Once he got started, he couldn’t stop or slow down. Maverick was helpless in the grip of ecstasy. He thrust deep, pumping harder, faster until she cried out, bowing her back and quivering in his arms. He was powerless but to follow, completely lost in the wonder of his midnight dream. After he’d cum, Maverick pulled her into his embrace, the act of release seeming to give him peace. Everly held him close, marveling at what had transpired. A small smile played on her lips. Tingles of elation mixed with shivers of remorse. He’d been in the throes of a nightmare when she’d come to his bed, offering him comfort. Oh, he’d taken it all right. The only problem was that Everly wasn’t sure this was something he’d have done in any other circumstance. Easing out from under him, she made a grab for her shirt, pulling it over her head. When he didn’t move, she felt around in the bed for her panties, but found nothing. “Dang it,” she whispered, then froze when he moved again, his hand running over the covers. Was he looking for her? No matter, he wouldn’t find her. Coward that she was, Everly Winterfell backed out of Maverick’s room and retreated to the safety of her own apartment. The cold light of day would tell the tale. If what they’d done together meant something to him, he’d let her know. And if it didn’t…. Well, she’d deal with that when the time came.

Beautiful Goodbye

synopsis

We’re told at a young age that words can never hurt us, but I’ve learned over the years that it’s not true. Some words can break us so badly that we never fully recover from them. Goodbye being the worst of all.

As a young adult I was forced to say goodbye to my father. Losing him broke me in a way I never thought I’d recover from… until I met Ryan.

Ryan Mitchell was the balm my soul needed to heal. He filled my life with happiness, love, and affection. He made me want things I didn’t think I ever would, and the dreams I’d said goodbye to years before didn’t seem so lost anymore. He taught me to live life to the fullest, and open myself to love. I didn’t think anything could bring me down from the high he kept me on… but I was wrong.

Life sometimes throws us curveballs that we can’t explain. It tests us and pushes us harder than we can ever imagine. I didn’t think I’d survive the crash, but I did.
Sometimes goodbye can be beautiful and it was…with Ryan.

*This is a STANDALONE contemporary romance*

angies review

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Oh man!!  The first chapter had my eyes leaking!!  I mean WHAT!!  Chapter 1!! So needless to admit, this is a bit of a tear jerker…hello the title should give you some insight to that as well…….

Our girl Rachel is a mechanic who has lost everyone she has loved.  She has her garage and her bestie Kasey but that is it. She is closed off to meeting anyone because everyone leaves her. She is struggling to make ends meet with her garage and can’t stand the thought she might lose it because it’s the last part of her family legacy.

Ryan is a pediatric nurse who is hiding his own demons when he meets the hot tow truck driver.  He knows she is way different than anyone he has ever met and can’t wait to spend some time with her even if he has to kidnap her to do it…LOL

Ryan and Rach are two peas in the same pod.  They both have tragedy to overcome and this helps to forge a bond together.  When Rach finds out Ryan’s big secret she is a mess.  She can’t handle it.  She just can’t deal with the possibility of losing someone she loves again.  The couple go through a gambit of emotions dealing with the new struggle they have in front of them.  When Rach goes outta her way to help the love of her life, she may end of causing more trouble than good for Ryan.

Ok like I said…TEARY EYES!!  The first chapter I tried to read at work and quickly slammed my book shut.  That is a no go……The first chapter sucks you in to the heart of Rachel and her fear of abandonment completely.  As the story progresses we can see the internal struggle Ryan has to keep his secrets from Rachel.  There were several times in the book that my eyes were getting leaky because this couple’s love for each other is very strong and their commitment is tight but sometimes even the strongest love can be broken!!

Melinda's Review

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Tissues are needed for this read the Prologue got me. I was so not prepared I had to hunt the tissues down and fast then they didn’t leave my side.

Rachel suffered a lot in her 22 years after losing her Mom when she was little and then to have to make the decision she did with her Dad heartbreaking I tell you. The only thing Rachel had to hold onto them was her Dad’s garage. But with bills & mortgage on the building she was slowly losing the last thing she had connecting her to her Dad. She didn’t have much to believe in to fight for until she met Ryan.

Ryan was a nurse and had carried a heavy burden around that everyone in his home town knew about. He wanted to find friends that didn’t know his past and would like him for him. He found Rachel and their connection was instant. Could Ryan let Rachel in all the way let her know everything in his life? Could Rachel handle falling for Ryan and losing someone else?

My heart ached for these two for everything they went through, for everything they were going through and for everything they would go through. This is a heart breaker from the start with the decision that Rachel is faced with. To see Ryan deal with what he is going through and seeing his relationship with his patient Jamie was a tear jerker. Ryan’s Parents are a piece of work I cannot imagine parents treating their child as they did Ryan.

This is a great story that pulls at your heart strings. My heart hurt to see all the heartbreak. There were so many Goodbyes in this story some were heart wrenching and some choked me up, but in the end it was a Beautify Goodbye.

My favorite quote:

“Rach, things don’t always go the way we want them to, but how you react to them sets the tone for your life. Don’t let the bad things define you. Turn them into good ones. Always live, and have no regrets.”

Melinda's Review

I received a copy of the book from the author for an honest review.

Again Brandy never disappoints. She has a way of taking a character that I’m not sure about and turning them into someone I really like.  This is exactly what she did with Kellan. Given who his parents were I just wasn’t sure if I would like him or if he could be different from his parents. Boy did Brandy prove me wrong in a big way.  Zoe is strong willed and determined. She did what she had to to make sure she kept Kellan safe. But no matter what Zoe decided Kellan was determined to find her and keep her.

The twist and turns this took were great and I never saw them coming. I felt what they were feeling, hurt when they hurt, was happy when they were happy.  Their connection was off the charts and watching their bond grow was amazing. Seeing his mother get what was coming to her was great too. My favorite scenes were the water scenes and how Kellan was attracted to all aspects of Zoe. Brandy always does an amazing job the fight scenes makes you feel like you are right there in the thick of things. Then when disaster strikes you feel every part of that. I even found myself crying with them.

The ending was great I cannot wait for more Brandy L. Rivers does such an amazing job with this series and the Others of Edenton series I don’t think I’ll ever want these series to end.

about the author

Time seemed to stand still at this time of night, the time just before closing but not quite midnight. The time when your feet ached so badly they screamed at you to sit down, yet you knew, if you did, you wouldn’t get back up to finish out the night.

Huffing out a breath, I watched the clock. Tick, tock. Each second passed as I wished and hoped for customers to come in to keep me busy before I closed out the night. Only an hour to go before I had to clean up and go to bed alone.

As if fate heard my wish for once in my life, the bell above the door chimed, and the air in Charlie’s Diner suddenly thickened with their presence, compressing, making the space feel smaller. It happened every damn time they came.

I thought at one time it was just the age of this place, the low ceilings or something, that made it small. Nope. It was them: the five grown, hulking, badass men who each stood tall, proud, and screamed trouble. The Viper’s Creed Motorcycle Club, namely Spook, Boner, Stiff, and Dawg.

Each man was over six-feet tall, and each exuded a commanding presence.

Small town chatter was always buzzing with different stories of the men, Charlie included. It seemed people were divided over the club. Some spoke their praises of helping little old lady Pearson with her groceries in the car, while others swore they were criminals.

Me, well, I was nothing more than a waitress at a diner, trying to keep my head above water. I didn’t really care what the men did or didn’t do. When they came in, which I had to admit was pretty regularly, they were always excellent tippers. At the end of the day, that was all I was concerned with.

Rolling my shoulders back and stiffening my spine, I found the confidence I needed to handle the sheer amount of testosterone in the air from the men because they were all sexy. Each and every one of them: Spook with his beard and jet black hair; Boner with his tousled, sexy hair that looked like he had just rolled out of bed; Stiff with his bald head, tall bulked frame, and sexy as hell demeanor, making my girlie parts tingle; and Dawg who was sexy with his long dark brown hair that curled around his ears.

“Hey, guys, have a seat anywhere you like. I’m on my own tonight, so anywhere you go, you’re stuck with me,” I greeted them as I made my way to the end of the counter and rounded it.

“You say alone?” Dawg asked.

I raised an eyebrow at him, wondering why he had used such a sharp tone. I left it alone, though, sighing as I kept my pace while they settled into their chairs.

Stiff caught my eye as he flipped his chair around backward then promptly straddled it. He was always a toss up. One never knew what Stiff would do except flirt. He was notorious for it.

“Rickie was working the grill and had a family emergency about twenty minutes ago. Night shift,” I explained. “It’s usually me and the cook after ten-thirty on the weekdays when it ain’t busy.”

“Charlie know about this?” Boner asked.

“Nah, that’s between them when Charlie sees the time clock,” I said. The truth was that Charlie probably wouldn’t know, but I wasn’t a rat.

Pulling my scratch pad out of my apron, I clicked my pen, ready to take the guys’ orders.

Stiff watched me carefully, a little too carefully. So much so that I felt a blush crawl up my neck and heat cover my face, no doubt reddening my pale skin.

“We’ll be here till you close up.” The deep baritone of his voice shot straight to my belly. “I’ll tail you home.”

“That’s not necessary. It’s happened before. I’m all right, Stiff.”

Boner looked at Stiff then me. Before he could speak, Stiff met my eyes.

“Not happenin’ again, Chelsea. You wind up alone, you call the clubhouse. No need for you to be here by yourself.”

The guys all looked at Stiff as if he had grown two heads.

He was a womanizer; I had heard all the stories. Why did he give a shit about me being alone? Then again, the guys, all of them, had always been friendly to me when they came in. This was no different, and it was sweet in a badass sort of way.

The door chimed, and in walked two college-age girls, giggling like they were at some pop star concert.

“Be right with y’all. Sit wherever,” I greeted then looked back at Viper’s Creed. “What’ll it be? Gotta get started.” I gave them a small smile while I quickly scribbled their orders as the girls approached. They were overly done up in enough makeup to make a drag queen jealous.

“Pick a seat,” I reminded them as if I hadn’t said it two seconds ago. “Let me drop the fries, and I’ll be back to take your orders.”

“We’re here for them.” The darker-haired girl pointed at Stiff and Boner, biting her lip. I was sure it was meant to be sexy, but it failed.

I didn’t have time for this.

“Then I’ll get to work on gettin’ ’em fed while y’all get to work on gettin’ their dicks wet.” I rolled my eyes.

“Spunk, Chelsea. You got spunk.” Dawg laughed.

I didn’t look back. Instead, I headed behind the wall to the kitchen area where I mocked the girls continually in my mind while I dropped fries in the hot oil.

When the fryer quieted, I had to stifle my gasp as I overheard the brazen women.

“Like, what made y’all wanna be part of a club?” one of them asked in that valley-girl-wanting-to-be-seductive-and-failing tone.

The men laughed loudly, and then Dawg was the first to answer.

“We ain’t a club. We’re fuckin’ family.”

“You kn-know, TV makes it so h-hot,” the other girl began. “Wh-what’s the appeal?”

There was the sound of someone smacking the table hard, and I jolted.

“Pussy. All the pussy we can handle,” Stiff taunted, and I couldn’t help the way my heart thudded in my chest painfully. “Thing is, bitches like you come in here, thinking you can be a part of something like this. You don’t know shit, and you ain’t shit. Your only place is sucking my cock when I feel like having it sucked. Got plenty of mouses for that, so move the fuck along. We got dinner to eat.”

I couldn’t see the table from where I was flipping burgers for their patty melts, but I heard Spook after I made out the squeal of one of the ladies.

“Don’t ever fucking touch my leather. I’m Vipers’. I’m not yours, and you’re not mine. Like my brother said, move the fuck along.”

Spook could be intimidating on a regular day, but the ice in his voice now had me on edge to even take him his plate. Those two dimwits didn’t seem to get it, though.

“We could be your dessert,” one of the women said.

If I didn’t have a spatula in my hand with hot grease on it, I would have smacked my head.

The sound of a chair scraping back against the floor assaulted my ears before Boner said, “We’re not interested. Even on your knees, on my cock, or licking the motherfuckin’ floor, the two of you don’t make the cut. Move on.”

Hell, I fully expected them to at least take the girls out to the parking lot and fuck them. At least, that would be par for the course according to the talk of the town.

On a humph, I heard the girls exit.

I shook off the words and worked on my task of plating the men’s food.

Dawg laughed. “Can you believe that shit?”

“We live by a code and die by a code. Bitches don’t know shit unless we tell them. Pussy doesn’t get you by,” Boner stated as I dumped the last of the fries onto their plates.

“If we wanna see pussy, I’m sure we can head over to Sirens. Heard it’s got a new woman in charge.” The tone in Stiff’s voice made me wonder if they really did frequent the strip club in town.

“Order up!” I yelled out of habit before I took the plates burning into my skin out to the sexy patrons.

I really had to get my head out of my ass where Stiff and all of Vipers Creed was concerned. It wasn’t my business and never would be.

angies review

I received this book for the author for an honest review.

*Laughing super hard*  OMG I freaking love this series~!!  The banter and comedy is just too much.  Its real life bantering that I can see my husband having or banter with my bestie Melinda too.

I fell in love with Lindsey reading Whitney’s novel and couldn’t wait to read her book.  She is a total character and pretty much tells it like it is whether you want to hear it or not.  She gets the chance from her magazine to try and meet a famous author.  The magazine wants her to try and get an interview from a man notorious for NOT doing interviews.  If she can pull this off she will get a much deserved promotion.

Lindsey gets her friends keys to his Florida home and is shocked when the friend’s brother is also there.  He wasn’t supposed to be in town but they make an uneasy agreement to share the space.  When the agreement is made, Jay calls his friend and we learn secret number 1 of a few to come.

The couple are hilarious.  The banter made me giggle a lot.  The letters the couple begin to write each other are what makes the book.  However when in person, The hot and cold of Jayson to Lindsey made me wanna kick him in the butt but then we get to figuring out MORE secrets he has annnnd we can kinda see why.

I loved this story and can’t wait for more from these characters because they crack me up.

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward delivers the second novel in her Bourbon Kings series—a sweeping saga of a Southern dynasty struggling to maintain a façade of privilege and prosperity, while secrets and indiscretions threaten its very foundation…

In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème de la crème of high society—just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discrete staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder…

No one is above suspicion—especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle—as well as with his former horse trainer’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family’s financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself.

Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, at the very brink of the family’s demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior…or the worst of all the sinners?

EXCERPT:

Toyota trucks were not supposed to go seventy-five miles an hour. Especially when they were ten years old.

At least the driver was wide awake, even though it was four a.m.

Lizzie King had a death grip on the steering wheel, and her foot on the accelerator was actually catching floor as she headed for a rise in the highway.

She had woken up in her bed at her farmhouse alone. Ordinarily, that would have been the status quo, but not anymore, not now that Lane was back in her life. The wealthy playboy and the estate’s gardener had finally gotten their act together, love bonding two unlikelies closer and stronger than the molecules of a diamond.

And she was going to stand by him, no matter what the future held.

After all, it was so much easier to give up extraordinary wealth when you had never known it, never aspired to it—and especially when you had seen behind its glittering curtain to the sad, desolate desert on the far side of the glamour and prestige.

God, the stress Lane was under.

And so out of bed she had gotten. Down the creaking stairs she had gone. And all around her little house’s first floor she had wandered.

When Lizzie had looked outside, she’d discovered his car was missing, the Porsche he drove and parked beside the maple by her front porch nowhere to be seen. And as she had wondered why he had left without telling her, she had begun to worry.

Just a matter of nights since his father had killed himself, only a matter of days since William Baldwine’s body had been found on the far side of the Falls of the Ohio. And ever since then Lane’s face had had a faraway look, his mind churning always with the missing money, the divorce papers he had served on the rapacious Chantal, the status of the household bills, the precarious situation at the Bradford Bourbon Company, his brother Edward’s terrible physical condition, Miss Aurora’s illness.

But he hadn’t said a thing about any of it. His insomnia had been the only sign of the pressure, and that was what scared her. Lane always made an effort to be composed around her, asking her about her work in Easterly’s gardens, rubbing her bad shoulder, making her dinner, usually badly, but who cared. Ever since they had gotten the air cleared between them and had fully recommitted to their relationship, he had all but moved into her farmhouse—and as much as she loved having him with her, she had been waiting for the implosion to occur.

It would almost have been easier if he had been ranting and raving.

And now she feared that time had come—and some sixth sense made her terrified about where he had gone. Easterly, the Bradford Family Estate, was the first place she thought of. Or maybe the Old Site, where his family’s bourbon was still made and stored. Or perhaps Miss Aurora’s Baptist church?

Yes, Lizzie had tried him on his phone. And when the thing had rung on the table on his side of the bed, she hadn’t waited any longer after that. Clothes on. Keys in hand. Out to the truck.

No one else was on I-64 as she headed for the bridge to get across the river, and she kept the gas on even as she crested the hill and hit the decline to the river’s edge on the Indiana side. In response, her old truck picked up even more speed along with a death rattle that shook the wheel and the seat, but the damn Toyota was going to hold it together because she needed it to.

“Lane . . . where are you?”

God, all the times she had asked him how he was and he’d said, “Fine.” All those opportunities to talk that he hadn’t taken her up on. All the glances she’d shot him when he hadn’t been looking her way, all the time her monitoring for signs of cracking or strain. And yet there had been little to no emotion after that one moment they’d had together in the garden, that private, sacred moment when she had sought him out under the blooms of the fruit trees and told him that she’d gotten it wrong about him, that she had misjudged him, that she was prepared to make a pledge to him with the only thing she had: the deed to her farmhouse—which was exactly the kind of asset that could be sold to help pay for the lawyers’ fees as he fought to save his family.

Lane had held her, and told her he loved her—and refused her gift, explaining he was going to fix everything himself, that he was going to somehow find the stolen money, pay back the enormous debt, right the company, resurrect his family’s fortunes.

And she had believed him.

She still did.

But ever since then? He had been both as warm and closed off as a space heater, physically present and completely disengaged at the same time.

Lizzie did not blame him in the slightest.

It was strangely terrifying, however.

Off in the distance, across the river, Charlemont’s business district glowed and twinkled, a false, earthbound galaxy that was a lovely lie, and the bridge that connected the two shores was still lit up in spring green and bright pink for Derby, a preppy rainbow to that promised land. The good news was that there was no traffic, so as soon as Lizzie was on the other side, she could take the River Road exit off the highway, shoot north to Easterly’s hill, and see if his car was parked in front of the mansion.

Then she didn’t know what she was going to do.

The newly constructed bridge had three lanes going in both directions, the concrete median separating east from west tall and broad for safety purposes. There were rows of white lights down the middle, and everything was shiny, not just from the illumination, but a lack of exposure to the elements. Construction had only finished in March, and the first lines of traffic had made the crossing in early April, cutting rush-hour delays down—

Up ahead, parked in what was actually the “slow” lane, was a vehicle that her brain recognized before her eyes properly focused on it.

Lane’s Porsche. It was Lane’s—

Lizzie nailed the brake pedal harder than she’d been pounding the accelerator, and the truck made the transition from full-force forward to full-on stop with the grace of a sofa falling out a second-story window: Everything shuddered and shook, on the verge of structural disintegration, and worse, there was barely any change in velocity, as if her Toyota had worked too hard to gain the speed and wasn’t going to let the momentum go without a fight—

There was a figure on the edge of the bridge. On the very farthest edge of the bridge. On the lip of the bridge over the deadly drop.

“Lane,” she screamed. “Lane!”

Her truck went into a spin, pirouetting such that she had to wrench her head around to keep him in her sights. And she jumped out before the Toyota came to a full stop, leaving the gearshift in neutral, the engine running, the door open in her wake.

“Lane! No! Lane!”

Lizzie pounded across the pavement and surmounted barriers that seemed flimsy, too flimsy, given the distance down to the river.

Lane jerked his head around—

And lost one hold of the rail behind him.

As his grip slipped, shock registered on his face, a flash of surprise . . . that was immediately replaced by horror.

When he fell off into nothing but air.

Lizzie’s mouth could not open wide enough to release her scream.
