#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – Molly McLain

Molly McLain

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Molly McLain. I’m from Wisconsin, am married, and a mom to three kiddos. I write steamy small town romance with blue collar heroes and spunky heroines.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

They’re all hard! The first book has to be just right to grab readers’ attention. Then the next books have to be similar, but different, too. Personally, I think I like first books better, because they set the premise for a new world and everything is fresh and new, but it’s also really fun to write cameos of previous in characters in subsequent books, too!

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Don’t compare your author journey to others. Set goals that work for you and measure your success by those accomplishments, not what you see other authors doing.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I spend about two hours a day writing romance. I also write for my day job, too, so some days it’s really hard to spend any more time in front of my laptop.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

This is like asking a mom to choose her favorite child! They’re all special for different reasons.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – Renee George

Renee George

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Renee George, USA Today Bestselling author of cozy paranormal mysteries, paranormal women’s fiction mysteries, and paranormal romance/ mysteries.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

They are all hard. LOL.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I am a pantser who writes mysteries, so I set up the suspects and the crime, then I work through it, investigating along with my heroine. I like to put in a lot of red herrings and make things twisty at the end, but usually, about the time that reader knows who-done-it in the story is about the same time that I knew when I was writing it.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Writing like any creative pursuit is one of those jobs you have to love enough to do it even when you hate it. The best tip I can give an aspiring writer is don’t compare the way you approach writing to the way other authors approach writing. Every one is different. Your process is your process. Comparing yourself to other writers is a great way to stay frustrated all the time. Honestly, it’s just one word after another until “The End,” however you get there.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Writing is more than just getting the words down. It involves a lot of planning and thinking, so I count that as writing time. Which means, all the waking hours in the day are typically spent writing. Hah!

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Currently, Nora Black from my Nora Black Midlife Psychic Mysteries is my favorite. She’s my age, has been through some of the things that I have been through, and she still kicks butt. I love having a heroine who represents a woman over 50 who is still young enough to live her life. I mean, I’m not dead, yet. Right?

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

In the Nora Black series, I’d have Kate Blanchett playing my heroine. She’s over 50 and still got it. Henry Cavill would play Ezra. Sandra Bullock would play her best friend Gilly.

What is your definition of success?

I write books and I get paid for them. It was always my dream, and that dream has come true. That’s success.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – Sara Whitney

Sara Whitney

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Sara Whitney writes sassy contemporary romance that’s always sunny with a chance of sizzle. A multiple award-winning author, Sara worked as a print journalist and film critic before she earned her Ph.D. and landed in academia. She’s a good pinball player, a great baker, and an expert at shouting her TV opinions to anyone who’ll listen.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Both have their challenges, but the later books require more consistency checks to make sure I haven’t changed a previously introduced character’s age, hometown, eye color, profession, last name… you know, little things like that.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Be kind to yourself. Writing can be lonely, and it can make you question your skill, creativity, motivation. Take breaks when you need it, and reach out to your support networks. Also, don’t forget that comparison is the thief of joy. Write your books and run your career without worrying about where you should be or what other authors are achieving. We’re all in this together!

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Erik, the Thor-like baker in my series starter, Tempting Taste. He’s one of those quiet, introverted characters who keeps his feelings under tight control… until he doesn’t. I love that the intensity of his emotions overwhelms the heroine, who’s starved for affection after a lifetime in an emotional Sahara.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Tempting Taste: Amy Adams and Norwegian Instagram hottie Lasse Matberg (no idea if he can act, but he definitely LOOKS the part)

What is your definition of success?

I’ve succeeded if a reader enjoyed escaping into one of my books for a few hours. Money, fame, and a private jet staffed with Tom Hiddleston lookalikes would be great, but making connections with readers is what keeps me writing.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Mellanie Szereto

Mellanie Szereto

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Mellanie Szereto, author of nearly forty steamy and super steamy romances, and I enjoy writing about characters who have experience with life, love, careers, and changes. Many of my stories are set in Midwestern small towns, much like my own life, and focus on family, friendship, and figuring out the meaning of true happiness. Living in the country suits me since I’m an avid gardener, am most at home in nature, and love hiking. I also enjoy cooking, baking, and reading, of course!

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

When I know I’ll be starting a new series, the first book is usually the hardest. I’m getting to know the main characters, setting, the dynamics of the relationships with secondary characters, and the general tone of the series. Once that world has its foundation, the other books seem to fall into place, providing enough background information to know what needs to happen with those other characters.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Like real people, my characters are unique and have their own life stories, experiences, fears, motivations, etc. While a few details may overlap here and there, each book develops into a story made for those characters. A different character will react differently in similar situations and each relationship is a new discovery!

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

BALANCE. Yes, I’m still working on it, even after 10+ years and nearly 40 books. Finding that perfect mix of writing, marketing, self-care, and other responsibilities can be difficult, but it’s a must to avoid burnout. And make time for reading!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I spend about 4-5 hours a day focused on actual writing and about 4-5 hours a day on writing-related business like marketing, social media, and emails.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

One of my favorite characters is Georgie Swofford from And Baby Makes 2½ (The Homegrown Café Book Club 5). At the beginning of the series, I thought she was a hard-nosed workaholic family law attorney, but she developed into a truly loyal friend by book 4 and revealed a personal history in book 5 that explained her standoffish demeanor. She earned her happily-ever-after with Oscar, who turned out to be more sweetheart than grouch!

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Oscar Banyan, former mayor of The Homegrown Café Book Club’s small town setting, from And Baby Makes 2½ will be played by Jason Momoa. He’s a recluse with a ZZ Top beard and long hair throughout the series–until Georgie insists on a haircut and shave to agree to his fake relationship deal. Charlize Theron will play the part of Georgina Swofford, his ex-wife’s divorce attorney and fake fiancée.

What is your definition of success?

While making a living from writing is important to me, creating books I love and having readers love them defines success to me. Hearing someone tell me (and other readers) they enjoyed one of my books is the best!

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Sophie Stern

Sophie Stern

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Sophie Stern – I’ve been writing professionally since 2005 and can’t imagine doing anything else!

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first book is usually the hardest for me because of the world building and setting the tone for the series.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I love adding in comedy. Jokes always make me laugh and I’ve found it’s a great way to mix things up.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Try not to take yourself too seriously. Write what makes you happy. Some people may critique you, but also remember that the great thing about writing is that it’s easy to fix mistakes.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

At least eight hours

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Mel from my Return to Dragon Isle series is one of my favorites. I just love her adventurous spirit.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

That’s an impossible choice! Could I get Neil Gaiman to play literally any character? 🙂 And I would definitely want Helena Bonham Carter to play a dragon shifter.

What is your definition of success?

For me, being a successful writer means supporting my family on my writing – which I’ve done!

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Miranda Shanklin

Miranda Shanklin

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Miranda Shanklin I live in Central Illinois with my husband, our two children, our 100 lab, two cats, our sons 10 month old lab and our daughter’s cat. I work full time during the day as a Paralegal at a very busy law firm. That job is very demanding and stressful. I love my job, but I also love I get to come into my home office (which hubby built for me and is everything I wanted) and escape into another world for the weekend.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

For me the first book in a series is the easiest one to write. I think it’s the last book in the series that’s the hardest to write. I had such a hard time with it I had a spin off trilogy already planned because it wasn’t coming together the way it needed to in order for that to be the end. Luckily, the last book in the Trilogy (which took me three times as long to write) was able to give me that completed feeling.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Yep. My series is a serial series. It needs to be read in order. The spin off trilogy isn’t really as much but it’s better if it’s read in order. It’s also better if you read the series first because I always refer back to things that happened in prior books.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

I have cried many times while writing. All that means is I put all of myself into my writing. To me writing is personal. Don’t separate yourself from your writing. Immerse yourself in the story. Write a story you would want to read.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I don’t typically write during the week. As I said my day job is demanding and stressful. I am usually drained by the time I get home. I want to make sure I am giving my characters my all. On the weekends it depends. I had some health issues that had to be dealt with and some anxiety issues and now that I’m back I make sure to get at least 5,000 a weekend but try for more. I currently have three fantasy series, a second chance romance, a contemporary fiction, and a dystopian I am working on so sometimes it’s just a matter of taking notes or writing a few scenes in my journal I carry around just for that purpose.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I do, I love this character. I really wish I could tell you about her, but she is in a book that I’m still working on. She is one of the main characters in one of my fantasy series. I will tell you it is about dragon shifters!

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

That’s a hard one. I’m thinking it would be one three different ones. Of course, I can’t tell you about those either because I’m still working on those too ! I know authors can be so frustrating can’t they?

What is your definition of success?

Most people would answer this with some kind of money measurement. That just isn’t who I am. If one of my books helps someone through a tough time, then I am a success. Or if I inspire someone to reach for their dream, then I am a success. I have a job that pays the bills, I don’t do this for the money. I do this because I love it. When I was about ten years old my mom let me read Stephen King for the first time (I had been bugging her for about a year and she finally caved) and I was hooked. He is the reason I became a writer. I thought if I could help one person escape whatever is bothering them like he did for me, I couldn’t do anything better for someone. There is no greater honor in my opinion.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – Liz Flaherty

Liz Flaherty

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Liz Flaherty – I live in north central Indiana and I write sweet contemporary romance with leanings toward seasoned romance and women’s fiction. I’ve also written a column called Window Over the Sink for over 30 years.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The ones after it are harder because I have a difficult time with two things. (1) Keeping things straight, no matter how much attention I’ve paid to detail. (2) Maintaining excitement. At the end of the day, I’d rather write stand-alone than series.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I try to make the stories and the protagonists as different as I can, but I’m not sure I accomplish it.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Use it. Emotional writing is often the best. Who wants to read about a life that’s not messy?

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I come to the office first thing in the morning and stay here until about noon, then occasionally a couple of hours later in the day. How much of that time is spent writing and how much is spent staring at the wall is…well, it’s the process.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Grace, from ONE MORE SUMMER, is probably my favorite. She had every reason in the world not to be loving and giving, but it didn’t stop her from doing both–even though the love was sometimes of the tough variety! She wasn’t beautiful or extraordinary in any way except the size of her heart.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

HOME TO SINGING TREES is a historical based right here where I live. I’ve always thought it would be a good film. As to who would star in it, I don’t watch enough movies to pick anyone! At the time I wrote it, I think I had Jeff Daniels and Anne Hathaway.

What is your definition of success?

Being happy.

I write traditional published and info published books, I span across multiple genres, I love to Cosplay, dance, music, bartend. Im a bit of an eccentric blend girl.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I’d say the rest of the series

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Its not really hard, my characters are alive in my head so we have some of the best conversation on where we should go from here

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Chaocoate mattinis… Ok Kidding or am I? I would say one b book at a time, and being true to yourselves.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

10

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Fayth and her family in I think we’re alone now. They were so diverse and all a bit crazy, Maxie the 7 year old was a representation of my son Brenin and the many questions he asks me.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

For my book with Hallmark “Mistletoe in Juneau, I would pick Boris Kodjoe and Antonia Thomas who plays Doctor Claire in The Good Doctor.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

#WOTR22 #AttendingAuthor #Spotlight – AJ Renee

A.J. Renee

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m AJ Renee and I write contemporary and paranormal romance! I’m so happy to be here with you today. A little about me, I live in Virginia, I’m an air force wife, mom to three girls, avid animal lover, and I enjoy trying new to me wines and craft beer.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first book is always harder. You have to set the setting and create a strong foundation and it usually holds the most details.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

If I’m not excited, my readers won’t be either. I have to make sure the ideas are fresh and I’m not producing the same plot with different names. Everyone has different struggles and obstacles as do characters in books. My job is to create those and tell a great story.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

The best advice is if you’re not feeling it or are struggling, give yourself a mental break. It’s sometimes best to take a few steps back so when you return to it you’re firing at 100%.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

On writing days, about three hours.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

They are ALL special to me! Don’t make me choose!

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Again with the hard questions! I love both the St. Fleur series and my Broderick Coven, so either of those on the big screen would be wonderful. As far as actors, who ever can bring the characters alive. There are too many talented actors to pick from.

What is your definition of success?

I’m still trying to define success within my writing career. Outside of work, seeing my children thrive, not be jerks, and showing kindness tells me I haven’t failed at motherhood.
