#WOTR #Spotlight – AD Ellis @ADEllisAuthor

A.D. Ellis

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

A.D. Ellis
I’m a mom, inner city alternative education teacher, tea lover, chocolate consumer, sweet red wine sipper, and a control freak.
There’s nothing I enjoy more than a cozy nap on a stormy afternoon. Wait, I may love new socks just as much.
I write contemporary romance and male/male romance when I’m not herding cats with my own children or my students.
I’m fluent in sarcasm, self-deprecating humor, and inappropriate comments.
Don’t let my resting bitch face scare you off, I promise I don’t feel nearly as bitchy as I may look.

When and Why did you start to write?

I started my first novel in October of 2013 just to see if I could do it. I had no plans on writing more than just the one book. But, I fell in love with the characters, the story, and the process, so I continued writing. And, here I am, thirteen books later!

What authors do you always read or suggest to others?

It depends on what they like to read.

Contemporary romance– the list is so very, very long. It would be hard to name just a few authors. There are just too many to share without leaving a favorite out. But a couple of my top favorites have always been Mia Sheridan, Julie Richman, Lori J. Otto, and Lynetta Halat.

Contemporary romance with some suspense– Jillian Jacobs, Lisa Caviness, TC Winters come to mind.

Romance with more twists or a dark side, I always think of Aleatha Romig or Pepper Winters.

Paranormal romance– Jillian Jacobs (her Elemental series was the first PNR I ever read and really, truly enjoyed) Also Tish Thawer.

Male/Male romance is my true love genre and I could list authors all day and never really reach the end. But, I’ll try. Kaje Harper, Finn Marlowe, Felice Stevens, Ashley John, Kindle Alexander, Riley Hart, Ella Frank, Kay Simone, Missy Welsh, Roan Parrish, L.A. Witt, Keira Andrews, Annabeth Albert, Amy Jo Cousins…..I’ll stop for now.

What is the most surprising thing you have found out with the writing process?

It’s so different for everyone. No one does it the exact same way, and that’s okay. Some days, depending on what part of the process I’m in, I need songs with lyrics. While on other days, I need songs with absolutely no words.
I’m a linear writer. I can’t write scenes and then piece them together.
I can’t write in ten or fifteen minute segments, I need a good hour or two to get a word count down.
And, I was surprised at how all-consuming the characters and stories become. I think of these people and what they are doing all the time.

What are you working on now?

As I’m writing these answers, I’m working on a secret project novella. After that, I plan to go back and finish up the Torey Hope series. And I have a different type of book in the works (well, different for me.)

When writing are you a pantser or plotter?

I’m a plotter first. I list out the main ways I think the story will go. I fill in certain things I know I want to happen or things I want the characters to say. Then I start writing and let the characters tell the story. It’s always fun to see where the story goes. Sometimes it sticks pretty close to the original ideas, but sometimes it veers off course and turns out so much better than I had first thought it would.
