#WOTR20 #AuthorSpotlight #5YearFamily – Jennifer Laslie

Jennifer Laslie

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Jennifer Laslie and I currently live in Layton, UT where I get to look at the mountains every single day!

Last December I made a huge leap by moving here from Louisville, KY. I’m happily married with two children and I’m sort of a crazy cat lady. We have five cats that rule our house and two dogs that try to stay out of their way.

I write both Young Adult and Paranormal Romance. When I’m not working or writing, you can find me at the bookstore with a coffee in hand or out hiking a trail in the Utah wilderness.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I’ve got to have something to drink, whether it’s water, a mixed rum drink, or coke and amaretto. My office has a big overstuffed chair and ottoman that I get settled in. I pull up Spotify for some light background noise and let my favorite songs play on shuffle. I try to remind my kids to leave me alone, but it doesn’t always work out that way. They’re 13 and 19 and you’d think they’d learn to listen to me by now, but nope!

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

I love meeting both readers and authors. These events usually give me an opportunity to see author friends I generally only ever chat with online. I also get excited when I have readers come up to my table that know of me, and have read something of mine, but then they gush about how much they love it and it makes my day!

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

I’d love to meet Jacqueline Carey. She is my all time favorite author! I do have a signed UK edition paperback of one of her books that I won online when she used to do giveaways on Facebook a long time ago. It is my most prized autographed book!

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I do not have to be at work until 9:30am MST. My alarm goes off at 6:30am every morning. I wake up, get ready for the day and get settled into my writing chair in my office with a coffee next to me. Because I work from home, I can utilize every minute up until 9:30 and then walk over to my desk to clock in for work. If I don’t have anything pressing in the evenings, I’ll eat dinner, watch a TV show with my husband, and if I’ve got the energy, I’ll try to write some more. If not, I’ll veg out and know that tomorrow I can tackle the word count.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

Can I name two memories? Yes? Please? Okay!

The first is when I wrote my novel Mermaid Adrift for a boxed set, Sirens and Scales. The box set hit #89 on the USA Today Bestsellers List right smack dab in between Stephen King and Janet Evanovich.

My second is getting accepted as a client for Rebecca Frank. She is a phenomenal cover artist and she is the one who has designed all of the covers for my Unfortunate Spells series.

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

Refer back up to my favorite author. My most prized possession is an autographed copy of one of Jacqueline Carey’s books. I have all of her Kushiel’s Legacy series, but they are all the hardback editions from the US. The one I have signed from her is Naamah’s Kiss and it’s the UK cover in paperback.
