#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight – Stephanie J. Scott

Stephanie J. Scott

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I write light-hearted, quirky romance and young adult as Stephanie J. Scott and romantic comedy as Stephanie Jayne. I live in greater Chicago area and grew up in Michigan, where I have set a number of books in both real and fictional places. I’m an avid reader, X-box gamer, and cat wrangler. My husband is a creative himself and we’re often working on projects side-by-side.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first book for sure since everything is brand new.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

My romances focus on new characters and love interests for each book, but the fun of it is to work in characters from previous books. I’m an ideas person, so I have far too many ideas for books at this point. Though not every idea makes a good book. Sometimes ideas become part of larger plots, or they stay on a list tempting me to write more.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

There are a ton of resources available to writers these days. Honestly, the hardest part is narrowing down which advice to go with. I always say start with free first. Facebook author and writing groups, library groups, books about writing or publishing, affordable workshops recommended by trusted sources. You don’t need pricey courses to start writing; beware, there are a lot of grifters out there who will gladly take your money. My gateway into writing novels was National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which is free and has great support for beginning writers through their online forums. Their initiative is to encourage anyone to get started writing, regardless of experience.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I don’t write daily. I mostly write on weekends, but aim to write during the week when I can. I have a longtime critique group who I meet up with in person and virtually who keep me going when it’s tough. Marketing work happens all the time–it never stops!

What is your definition of success?

Once upon a time, I wanted to write a book–one book. Now I’ve published ten with another two on the way. I find looking back helps see what I’ve already accomplished and assists with new goals.

#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight #eventsponsor – Traci Douglass

Traci Douglass

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Traci. I’m a full-time romance author and fiction editor. I’m traditionally published in contemporary and paranormal romance with Harlequin/Mills & Boon, Entangled Publishing, and Tule Publishing, and also indie publish MM romance under my pen name, T.S. Ankney.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Honestly, every book brings its own challenges. The first in a series can be exciting because you’re creating everything from scratch, but that can also be a challenge because you also need to think ahead about the other books planned in the series to make sure you don’t write yourself into a box, plot or character wise, that you can’t get out of. Writing the later books can be easier, world-building wise, because you’ve already set up the world. But then you also need to make sure you keep things consistent and don’t contradict yourself because readers will notice. And let you know about it! 😂👍

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

As a writer, I’m always discovering as I go, so keeping it fresh isn’t really a problem. Characters and settings reveal new aspects to me all the time, so… I will say though I also make conscious choices, whenever possible, to choose the new and diverse also, because I like my books to reflect the world I see around me, and different is beautiful, baby! ❤️

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Just pace yourself and write the way it works for you. Trying to impose someone else’s random rules about word counts per day or outlining or whatever, can really intimidate and stifle new writers who are still finding out what works for them. Do what works for you and what gets words on the page. That’s all that matters. 👍

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I work on my own books in the morning, usually two at a time in different stages of doneness, then work on my day-job editing in the afternoon. So, yeah. It’s a nine to five job for me. ✍️

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Aw, man. I can’t pick just one. That’s like asking a parent to pick a favorite kid. 😂 I love all my characters for different reasons. 🤷‍♀️

What is your definition of success?

Being able to support myself doing what I love and having readers fall in love with the worlds and people I create. 😊

#wotr #attendingauthor #partofaseries Sweet Southern Memories (Magnolia Grove 2) by C.A. Harms

Zoey

Life doesn’t always go according to plan, a lesson I learned the hard way during my divorce. My first love returns home just in time to watch me pick up the pieces, and the moment I lay eyes on him every memory rushes back.

Jayson Lincoln, the man who still makes my heart beat fast, after all these years. But he’s Doctor Lincoln now and I’m a far cry from the carefree girl he left behind.

I’m learning to navigate life as a single mother of twin girls and he’s reluctantly home to take over the family practice. We may be back in the same small town, but we’re still worlds apart.

Jayson

It’s always been her. No one could ever measure up to Zoey Harding.

And I’ll always regret walking away from her and our hometown, for the big city to chase my dreams.

The longer I’m back, the more the echoes of our past whisper what could have been. But it’s not just about us, and her daughters steal my heart and mend what’s been broken for far too long.

Zoey’s afraid to trust me, but I’m determined to heal the fractures of her heart and prove that this time I’m not going anywhere.

Review by Twinsie Dee

i was given this book by the author for an honest review.

Tragic hits Magnolia Grove when the town doctor passes away. bringing Jayson back home to bury not only his grandpa, but his mentor and his best friend. Now back home after the funeral Jayson found himself in now his office of his new practice, that his grandpa left him. but being back home gave him a chance to get the love of his life back. Zoey is dealing with her hopefully soon to be ex-husband who keeps dragging out their divorce, and also trying to keep her twins safe from it all. So having the boy that makes her heart flutter coming back to town is the last thing she needs right now. Jayson is going to try everything he can to break Zoey’s walls down and get back into her life. But will she allow him to not only into her heart again but into the heart of her twin girls? oh this book had my heart especially from Zoey’s point of view with having my divorce being drug out, and doing everything i could do to keep my son safe and happy.

C.A. Harms is an avid romance and mystery reader. She’s always had a love for books, getting lost in writing and storytelling even as a young girl. She enjoys happy endings and HEA love stories.

She lives in Illinois and enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She holds an addiction for Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha’s and KitKat when she should really be focusing on water and maybe a fruit or two to make herself feel less guilty, but that feeling quickly passes…thankfully.

She is easy going, fun, and although she may seem like one of the quiet ones at first, you just wait until she gets to know you better…that quietness changes, fast

#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight #eventsponsor -Tricia Andersen

Tricia Andersen

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Tricia Andersen. I write all sorts of romance – paranormal, Greek god, fighter, contemporary, historical and fantasy. I live in Iowa with my husband. I also have three children and my four-legged baby, Kinnick.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I think the first book is the hardest because I have to create the world I am writing about along with the characters. When I work on the additional books in the series, those details are already there.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I like to dive deeper into the world I set up or expose something about a character that the reader didn’t know. I also like to introduce action scenes to keep it face paced.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Don’t give up. It can be overwhelming but getting that book out is definitely possible. Slow your pace until it feels manageable again.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Not enough. Maybe an hour?

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

My favorite character is Freddy from the Gods of DC series. He’s passionate, snarky and is becoming a phenomenal leader.

What is your definition of success?

My definition of success is achieving my dreams. I always wanted to be a writer since I was little. I feel I have been successful.

#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight – Skye Malone

Skye Malone

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is Skye Malone. I’m a non-binary author of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. It’s nice to meet you!

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The latter books in the series are always harder. When I’m first starting out, the sky’s the limit on what I can do in that world, but later I have to follow my own world’s rules!

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I am always conscious of when I might be repeating myself or copying what I’ve already done in a previous book, and I never want to do that, so it’s always at the forefront of my mind to keep things fresh and interesting.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Get sleep. Seriously, get sleep. You may think you don’t need it because the rush of writing words is awesome, especially late at night when the world is quiet and it’s just you and the characters, but trust me. Get sleep. Your stories and your health will be better for it.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

4-5 hours, sometimes more

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I love them all. Honestly, I do. Plus, picking a favorite will only make the others cranky at me. 😉

What is your definition of success?

Being happy with what I’ve written while also being able to make a living from it.

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

Thanks for reading this! Come see me at Writers on the River. I’d love to meet you in person!

Mickey Miller

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Mickey Miller. I am romance author from the Midwest, and in my spare time I play guitar and sing in a band.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The ones after it for sure! Usually I’ll have one book I totally love and the ones I try to write after aren’t as clear cut. For this reason I’ve started to write more standalones.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I’m usually pretty good at coming up with really different scenarios for the next meet cute that’s happening.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Put your phone in another room for 30 minutes a day and at least write for that amount of time. You can get a surprising amount of work done, over the long haul, in 30 minutes a day.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Wow, this varies from 20 minutes to 5+ hours for me. I’ve always wanted to have some “perfect” schedule but it never seems to quite work out like that.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

My favorite character(s) are definitely the couple I am working on right now, Vi and Henry. They experience a horrible tragedy together and they bond because of it.

What is your definition of success?

Writing books that I love and believe have a good message, and hopefully people like them.

Dawn Brower

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

If I have to choose… probably the first book. That’s the world building book. The first introduction to the characters. You have to make the reader love them enough to want to read the next book. Why should they not only invest in these main characters but the secondary ones as well. It’s a balancing act.

Don’t be like me, lol. I keep telling myself I am going to do less and schedule better but I don’t. Because I don’t I straddle burnout and that’s no place to be as an author. In short, plan better and remember to take time for yourself. Also don’t compare yourself to other authors. Do what works for you because everyone is different.

It varies… some days I write more than others but at least two hours on a typical day.

#WOTR24 #AuthorSpotlight #AttendingAuthor – Sophie Stern/L.C. Mortimer

Sophie Stern

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Sophie Stern – I love writing stories as much as I love reading! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been obsessed with books and fictional characters. I first got hooked on reading with The Boxcar Children, and then I read The Babysitter’s Club Little Sister, The Babysitter’s Club, Dear America, and Sweet Valley High. The best thing about books is that you can reread them a hundred times and always experience something new and different.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first book is always hardest for me because you’re setting everything up and have to balance what to include in the first book versus what comes later.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I think when you dive into a new set of characters, you naturally explore the relationship through a fresh lens, so it’s something that happens naturally as you write. Each character has their own backstory and interests, so their story will naturally be different.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Learn as much as you can, but mostly focus on just writing that first book. The writing really is the hardest part!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

8-10 hours

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Every character is my favorite, but lately I’ve been really connecting with Melody from “Sweet Nightmares: The Vampire’s Melody.” She’s feisty and brave and doesn’t let anything keep her down.

What is your definition of success?

Living a peaceful, happy life.

#WOTR24 #attendingauthor #Authorspotlight #eventsponsor – Miranda Lynn

Miranda Lynn

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Miranda Lynn…and at this point I think you know it all. Nine year signing author, wotr family member, chaotic, unorganized, can’t keep my brain on a singular task these days. Getting my writing mojo back and ready to bring new characters, worlds, genres, and much more to the world. Still looking for a pet dragon, and that ever elusive perfect cup of coffee. (the darker the better baby) My collection of coffee mugs keeps growing and my space for them is getting smaller. Throw in a few grunt style shirts, my favorite lady on my hip, and a hubby who loves going to the range with me and I think that may be a few things that people still might not know about me.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first book because I want to share ALL the stuff about ALL the characters at once. oh the first draft of a first in series sucks balls.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

sometimes taking a break helps for me anyway. I try to place each couple in a different situation with in the whole set of tropes my readers love. I’ll read a book, watch a few movies, and bounce ideas of fellow writers and hubby. then i’ll jot down notes and what characters they pertain to. When that slows down I know I’m getting close to wrapping a series up. (more to share on that later next year)

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Use what you know but take breaks. Get the words out, let it rest, and then revise. Journal about your day, what issue you may have used emotionally in your writing and let the stress of it go as much as possible.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

My goal is 4 hours, currently with everything going on I’m happy to get 1 hr a day. Hopefully by the time you get to read this I’ll be back up to 4 hours.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I do, but I actually have one in the wings that I like better. She’s a patient, sneaky, and super intelligent character with a past and a secret that could get her killed.

What is your definition of success?

This is hard as for everyone it’s different. I have different levels of success, 1st was people actually reading my books, then those people becoming fans and reading everything, getting recognized in a random elevator like a celebrity. My next major success goal is to not only make this a career of passion but an actual career that can financially support me. Or at least my half of the household. 🙂

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

Not really, but it’s almost midnights and my brain stopped working about two hours ago.

Andi Lawrencovna

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Writing as Andi Lawrencovna. I’m a fantasy and romance author who does a lot of fairy tale retellings. I am a cover addict with no shame, collecting them with a passion. My favorite original fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast but of “my” retellings it would be about Captain Hook.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I always think the middle one is the hardest. I usually know where I’m going to start and how I’m going to end, but getting there is the issue. Whether book to book or a series as a whole.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I try to write what I would like to read. Not that I by any means have any finger on the pulse of what’s popular, but I always figure: there’s someone out there for every story, so I write for the readers who are like me.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

For sure! Write what you want, not just what you know. I was always told write what I know…but I write fantasy, so who knows any of that?!? But write what you love, and you have an audience that will love every story you come up with, even if it’s just you. Don’t let that discourage you. Just find what you love most!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Not nearly enough!!! I wish I wrote more everyday but I think it’s important not to punish myself if I don’t write enough. I think finding a way to be creative can be more useful than anything else sometimes.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I’m cheating…ALLL OF THEM! Each for a different reason but mostly because I just love being able to create and shape the characters I would want to be with. To have a conversation with. Or get caught in an ambush and fight for survival with…probably because I’m pretty sure they’re all WAYYY braver than me and definitely more competent with a sword.

What is your definition of success?

Doing something that you can be proud of and can stand behind.
