#WOTR23 #AttendingAuthor #Spotlight – Jamie K. Schmidt

Jamie K. Schmidt

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Jamie K. Schmidt. I’m a three time USA Today bestselling author. I write steamy paranormal and contemporary romances. In the past year, I’ve lost 143 lbs from weight loss surgery and it’s been a crazy long road. I wrote a non fiction book about the experience called Losing It.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The others after it. I always forget names and little details, so I have to keep detailed notes on the books and the characters.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I write two or more books at a time so if I get stuck on one, I’ll work on the other.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Find like minded writers, either online or in person. Spend some time chatting on zoom or going away for a weekend together to plot, write, and just connect.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

An hour or so, sometimes more.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

My favorite character I’ve written is in my upcoming release A Cowboy for Merry. Merry Grayson is one of the wild Grayson sisters and she’s one of the first women to ride a bucking bronc in her rodeo division.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

In A Cowboy for Merry, Simon would be played by Karl Urban. And Merry would be played by Kylie Rogers.

What is your definition of success?

Making the New York Times bestseller list someday.

#WOTR23 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Albany Walker

Albany Walker

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Albany Walker, mother of 4 and married to my high school sweetheart for the past 22 years. I’m and avid reader turned author with a penchant for cowboy boots and pretty bras.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The follow up books are harder for me.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I tend to write what I want to read, and I really enjoy a lot of sub genres as long as it includes romance.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Write what you love. Surround yourself with people will support you, and tell you the hard truths of you need to hear it.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Writing is my full time job. I write from 9-4 Monday through Friday and still have to make time for social media and admin work. I try not to work on the weekends unless I’m on a deadline or editing.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Honestly it’s usually the characters from the book I’m working on. I love Waylynn from my Tasting Madness series. She sweet, and but still had a backbone.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Friends With the Monster.

Damiana: Anya Taylor-Joy, Grim: Jensen Ackles, Gunnar: Jason Momoa, Calix: Chris Hemsworth.

#WOTR23 #AuthorSpotlight – Molly McLain

Molly McLain

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Molly McLain

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The books that follow, for sure. You can do anything you want with book one, but you have to be careful not to mess up details in the following books. You’ve set a precedence with that first book that can make writing the next books intimidating.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

By changing up the tropes and creating unique characters. Maybe book one has a serious, rule-following heroine, but book two’s heroine is a witty, risk-taker.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Books are written word by word. Some days, you’ll only get a few down. Others, you’ll get a couple of chapters. But every day you write, you’re making progress. One word at a time.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Writing? Ha. An hour? Doing “admin work” and “networking” on social media? Um… no comment.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Jesse Enders. That man has a heart of gold and he is my ideal book boyfriend in all the ways.

Jillian Jacobs

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Jillian Jacobs – Co- host of Writers On The River. 11 books available on all outlets. Romantic Suspense – paranormal and contemporary

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

First book, because with the rest you have to remember what you wrote before. And I typically find sex scenes the hardest to write.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Making sure the characters have unique personalities or quirks

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Honestly, just type it out.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

It’s been a while with some life changes for me to feel the bug.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I actually like all my characters.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I’d love to see my Elementals series on HBO. I’d like to see them use new actors.

What is your definition of success?

Success is when you hold a copy of the paperback in your hand.

Do you have anything you want to share that didn’t fit on one of these questions?

I’d love to see everyone at Writers On The River in July!!

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Genevieve Jack

Genevieve Jack

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m USA Today bestselling and multi-award winning author Genevieve Jack and I write wild, witty, and wicked-hot paranormal romance and romantic fantasy. I believe there’s magic in every breath we take and probably something supernatural living in our dark basements. You can summon me with coffee, wine, and books, but I stick around for dogs and chocolate. My novels feature badass heroines, fiercely loyal heroes, and fantasy elements that will fill you with wonder.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Probably the first because I’m establishing the world and the magic system that the rest of the series will develop.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Even though my characters are paranormal creatures, the themes of my books revolve around real life events and emotions. Because each book features different characters in different situations, there really isn’t much overlap in the stories. They are tied together by a series arc and common goals in some cases, but other than that, each is an original work.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Most writers I know have wanted to do this since they were little and genuinely enjoy the process of creating their art. If this describes you, learn your craft and then keep writing until you finish your book. Write for the joy of it first. You can fix imperfections when you’re done by working with a professional editor, or keep that first book just for you and write another book.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

4-6 hours

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I do love Nathaniel from The Dragon of Cecil Court. There’s something about a dragon who owns a bookstore in London that’s exceptionally magical to me.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

The Dragon of New Orleans featuring Henry Cavill and Elizabeth Gillies

What is your definition of success?

Waking up every morning knowing I have good friends, loving family, and purposeful work.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – Danielle Keil

Danielle Keil

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Danielle Keil. I’m a lover of avocados, chocolate, coffee, and Corgis. I’m a decent dancer and… oh. Wait. Did you want info on my authorship and books? Okay… I’m a YA/NA author. A mix of contemporary and romance, mostly romance. I love putting mental health and real-life issues into my books, because it makes them *real* and relatable.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

All of them 😛 Or editing. And blurb writing. Those are way harder than writing the book itself!

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Trying different tropes, putting new spin on characters, different personalities, different issues going on in their lives.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Take your time. Find your tribe. Find friends in the same spot as you and friends who are ahead of you to help guide you!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Maybe 1-3 hours. All the other stuff takes up so much time!

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Probably Lizzie Wright, from Far from the Surface. She is based off of me in high school, so she’s very near and dear to my heart.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Hmm. Radical Royal was based on an actor from Julie and the Phantoms– Owen Joyner (the drummer), so definitely him as Ollie. And maybe a young Vanessa Hudgens for Maggie? I’m so bad with this question, especially since I write YA and I’m not totally up to date with the younger actors!

What is your definition of success?

Whatever makes you happy! It doesn’t have to compare against another person, it can be any small victory. Did this book get more preorders than the last? Success! Did you hit a page reads goal? Success! Are you happy with this book, even if no one is reading it? Success!

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – A.d. Ellis

A.D. Ellis

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

A.D. Ellis
I’m a mom of two teens, an educator of 23 years, and an author of over fifty books between two pen names. I also love, in no particular order, hot tea, chocolate, pizza, naps, reading, crocheting, and writing. My husband and I have known each other 25 years and been married 21. We live in the suburbs just south of Indianapolis and I teach in the inner city. My children are involved in show choir and band, so that definitely keeps us busy.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

For me, it depends on the characters. Excitement over a new book/series usually pushes the first book along, but subsequent books/characters are easier because I *know* them more. My books don’t usually follow the same couple through more than one book. Most of my series are books with connected settings/groups of friends/family and focus on a new couple each book.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Each new couple gets their time to shine while we still get to revisit the couples in previous books. I think readers and writers enjoy a good balance of fresh/new with the warm/comfortable.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

I do my best to write a little every day, but I also have to be honest with myself and let it go when a day just ISN’T going to be a writing day. Also, sometimes it helps to write something else. Interview questions/answers 😉 for example. Or I’ll find quotes I love and handwrite them as a way to get creativity going.

These quotes are always good for me when I’m feeling drained or stressed with writing.

“I tell my students there is such a thing as ‘writer’s block,’ and they should respect it. You shouldn’t write through it. It’s blocked because it ought to be blocked, because you haven’t got it right now.” -Toni Morrison

“If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.” -Margaret Atwood

“‎If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot…reading is the creative center of a writer’s life…you cannot hope to sweep someone else away by the force of your writing until it has been done to you.” -Stephen King

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Typical day during the school year: Up at 3:15am, zone out on social media, take a shower, get ready for school, be at my desk with tea by 5:00am, write until 6:00am, leave for school. After school, I’ll usually do administrative type work but not often any real writing.

Typical day during breaks: Up around 6 or 7am, an hour or two writing, do whatever is scheduled for myself or kids, another hour or two writing.

You’d think I’d be more productive on breaks, but I’m really not.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special?

Why don’t you just ask me which of my children is my favorite 🙂 Honestly, Sawyer holds a special place in my heart because he brought me to a very dear friend and his book was the one that thrust me into the world of LGBTQIA+ Romance.
Others who stick out: Jay in Can’t Fight It (he’s in the whole BJ Boys series), Braeton in Braeton & Drew: Something About Him, Cooper in Adore, Justin in The Perfect Blend, Charlie in Perfect Timing, Kota in Holly Hills Christmas, Marc in Take Me Home. But I truly love each character for one reason or another.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I suck at these. I’d LOVE to see the BJ Boys made into a movie. I think Remington Place would be a fun movie/mini-series. But I am HORRIBLE at picking actors for characters.

What is your definition of success?

Honestly, I think it changes and can be different for different situations.
Is success writing a book? Maybe.
Is it writing over fifty books? Getting good reviews? Being asked to write in a special project? Again, maybe.
Is success when even just one reader is touched by your story?
Or do you need to be able to claim “best seller” to be successful?
Do you need to make six figures and quit your day job to write full time?
Depending on the parameters of what society/others/you set as “success”, it truly can be anything.
Some days, I’m a success because I got out of bed or remembered to wash that load of laundry.
I count it as a success when my kids’ teachers report they’re polite and helpful and great students.
It’s a success when I get through lunch duty with a smile on my face, when students seek me out for a hug, and when I see our students in the building making progress.
So again, success is different for different people and depending on the situations and experiences.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Anna Hague

Anna Hague

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m Anna Hague and I live just a little north of Indianapolis IN. I also work as a sports writer/photographer for a local paper. My husband and I don’t have any children, but we’ve hosted 11 foreign exchange students. Before Covid, we did all kinds of activities. Now we’ve gotten content hanging out at home with our two dogs and three parrots. We are planning some vacations this year and plan to visit one of our kids in Italy in a year or so. I started publishing in 2016 and the best thing is all the wonderful people I’ve met in person and online.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I think the other books are harder. You have so many ideas with the first, and after that one, you have to find something that will make the new book unique and just as interesting to the reader as the first.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I’m using secondary characters as the MCs. By using them, I can dive deeper into their lives and personalities the reader didn’t really get to see in the previous book. So both the reader and me get to know all kinds of things we didn’t know before.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Don’t force it. If the words aren’t there, leave it alone for awhile. I had to take a break for medical reasons. I had no desire to write. Now after the hiatus, I’m really excited to be back writing.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

Because of my job, my hours are never set. I try for an hour everyday and days I’m not working, I aim for five to six. But I have to get full permission from the dogs, and they don’t always agree.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Jamey from Captured Hearts. He was my first, but I still love him. He did something really horrible, and through three books and a span of almost 18 years, he cannot forgive himself even though others have.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Thunderstruck would be a great Netflix movie because it’s a paranormal. I think Chris Hemsworth and Mila Kunis would be a good pair.

What is your definition of success?

It’s certainly not about the money. I think from Page 1 to The End is success. The whole process of writing a novel is challenging at every turn. The story, the conflict, the pacing, the resolution. It all takes so much of yourself and sanity to complete.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #spotlight – Taki Kasai

Taki Kasai

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hello I’m Taki Kasai

I live in South Roxana IL with my eight animals. I have four dogs, Molly, Max, Copper and Khanna. I also have four cats, Cleopatra, Sassy, Salem, and Luna.

Hobbies include: Reading, Writing, and Video Games. (Totally a nerd)

I write multiple genres, I write Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Contemporary Romance. I am going to be dipping my toes into the PNR world here soon as I have come up with a witchy novel that must be done now. My first book was a fantasy novella The Dark Arcane Master back in 2017. My latest book is Save the Last Dance published in 2021.

When I’m not writing I work as a truck dispatcher and a server at a Vineyards. (Can we just say all the free wine?)

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

Everything that comes after the first book. I am always having to look back at my last book to make sure I’m staying consistent with looks, nicknames, places. It sometimes become so boggling even with my notes. The first book I feel I can let my imagination do a free for all.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I add new characters and places to the series to add more layers to the story line. To make the story feel like it is more 3D then 2D. I also plan on adding in a new adventure in every story. Per example my Mage War Series is a fantasy series, so there will be more of an adventure story, a battle story, a love story. Etc.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Don’t force the words and always take me time. Sometimes just enjoying the weather and a nice cup a tea can do wonders for the stress. Especially when the words are not coming. I have also learned that it is okay to get help doing certain things. We can’t do it all!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I typically spend a couple of hours writing. I don’t do it all in one sitting due to my 7-5 job but I space it out in-between. Sometimes it can be a few words and other times I might get a few pages written. It really depends on the day.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Addie Moya is one of my favorite characters. You meet her in The Red Assassin. She is a hacker in the book and tends to blend into the background. She is willing to stay in the background unless one of her friends are hurt. Then she has no problem getting her hands dirty. Not only that she is the one of my mysterious characters who continues to develop as I write. I learn more and more about her every time that even makes me do a double take. I adore her and think she has a lot of potential.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

I would really want my Mage War Series made into the a movie. Just to see Michael Fassbender (Playing Lorcan Adair) and Misha Collins (Playing Mihaly Novak) Go head to head. I think it would be epic. Not only are they brothers but they are each others ultimate enemies. (Let’s not forget Scott Eastwood playing Jackson, one of Mihaly’s best friends and a Bear!)

What is your definition of success?

Someone telling me how much they enjoyed my books and how I have touched their life.

#WOTR22 #attendingauthor #Spotlight – Alison Bliss

Alison Bliss

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m Alison Bliss, a best-selling, award-winning author of sexy, contemporary romances that are laugh-out-loud funny. Something I like to call, “Romance…with a sense of humor.” I’m a born and raised Texan, who currently resides in the Midwest with my super supportive husband, two awesome kids, and five pets. I’m also the youngest of five girls, which means I’ve never turned down a challenge or been called by the right name. I enjoy writing fun, steamy love stories that put a smile on a reader’s face.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I think the first book in the series is easier because you are open to any possibilities. With the next books in the series, you’ve already established things such as characters, settings, and backstory that you sometimes wish you could change. Fortunately, there are usually ways around these kind of writing barriers.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I try to always keep my characters fresh. For example, in my Perfect Fit series, the heroines of each book are all plus-size women, but they aren’t the same person. The women are all different and aren’t going to feel the same way about their bodies. Leah (Book 1) is my self-depracating heroine, Valerie (Book 2) is my confident heroine, and Jessa (Book 3) is a total foodie who doesn’t have any hang-ups about her size. Interesting fact – the hero in Jessa’s book is actually the one who struggles with a food addiction.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

When you’re having a hard time writing a particularly difficult scene or struggling to finish your book altogether, keep in mind that even published authors who have been writing for years have these same struggles. Writing books is not easy, but if you stick with it and don’t give up, you will get through it.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I wish I could write daily, but it’s just not possible right now. I have a personal life and a busy household with a husband, two kids, and six pets. For me, it’s a balancing act to make sure everything gets done, including the writing. But on the days I do write, I usually am working for a good eight to twelve hours with some breaks in between.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

My favorite character that I have written thus far is the heroine from my debut novel, Rules of Protection. Emily Foster is a girl after my own heart. She is sassy and gives the hero so much grief. I will admit that she is a bit of a brat, but once you read her story and get to know her background, then I think it’s easier to understand who she is and why she behaves the way she does. The woman actually has so many layers that you get to see unfold throughout her story. She was definitely a lot of fun to write.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

For Rules of Protection, I would love to see Emma Stone and Tom Hardy portray my characters, Emily and Jake.

What is your definition of success?

My definition of success is being able to do something you love while also earning enough to make a living.
