#Review – Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson

An instant New York Times bestseller! “Grown exposes the underbelly of a tough conversation, providing a searing examination of misogynoir, rape culture, and the vulnerability of young black girls. Groundbreaking, heart-wrenching, and essential reading for all in the #MeToo era.” —Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles

Award-winning author Tiffany D. Jackson delivers another riveting, ripped-from-the-headlines mystery that exposes horrific secrets hiding behind the limelight and embraces the power of a young woman’s voice.

When legendary R&B artist Korey Fields spots Enchanted Jones at an audition, her dreams of being a famous singer take flight. Until Enchanted wakes up with blood on her hands and zero memory of the previous night. Who killed Korey Fields?

Before there was a dead body, Enchanted’s dreams had turned into a nightmare. Because behind Korey’s charm and star power was a controlling dark side. Now he’s dead, the police are at the door, and all signs point to Enchanted.

“Never have I read a story that so flawlessly hits the highest high and lowest low notes of Black girlhood in pursuit of the American Dream.” —Nic Stone, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin and Jackpot

This book was chef’s kiss in the best of ways. Now I’ll start by saying that as a white woman, I liked being educated as to what black women face when they need help from authorities. It definitely helped open my eyes, so thank you to the author for helping with that.

Now this book…first, it has several triggers. I never thought I had triggers. I read extreme horror. I should be immune right? Well, I was wrong. I told a friend who read this book at the same time I did, that it bothers me because I would have been the exact same way if I was in Enchanted’s shoes. I’m beyond thankful I met my husband when I did.

Okay now for the review. Enchanted wants to be a singer and she has the voice for it. She goes to an audition at the help of her friend and catches the eye of Korey Fields. He grooms her into being someone she isn’t and it all goes down hill from there.

From their very first interaction, my hackles rose and I instantly didn’t like him. I think I was infuriated for most of the book. So kudos to the author for bringing that out in me.

This book is fast paced, action packed, filled with drama, a strong female lead and more. I absolutely loved it and it fits right up there with my love for Allegedly.

If only people listened to the first girl. Maybe then it wouldn’t have taken over 16 to get something done.

#Review – The Outlaw Gillis Kerg … Physics, Lust and Greed Series by Mike Murphey

In the mid-21st Century, a top-secret consortium of corporations and governments have made time travel possible, only to realize that intruding on the past has been a terrible mistake. At the program’s outset, a thousand scientists, engineers and support staff were confined to a subterranean complex where a corporate contributor specializing in artificial intelligence equipped their apartments with Happy Home Companion software.

Time traveler Marta Hamilton has little tolerance for other people intruding into her life, much less a software “Dear Abby,” so Marta bullies her Happy Home Companion into silence. Finally convinced of the grave dangers of time travel, government overseers suspend operations, and only the Happy Home Companion remains.

Marta and fellow traveler Marshall Grissom hope they can finally leave the past behind, but when a federal judge is murdered, they understand their vulnerability to horrible manipulations by future counterparts. Marta and Marshall return to the Arizona desert where they confront a Happy Home Companion cult of vengeance, the outlaw Gillis Kerg, and an evangelical zealot waging a war on science.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

Unique Multiverse Murder Inc Fringe Tale

This is book 4 in the series. I have not read the first 3 and feel that it can be read as a standalone. However, I am rather intrigued to see how everyone got to this point so I will be going back to the beginning.

Ok, so most of us have seen Back to the Future and know the ramifications of messing with the past and/or future. Well, in this story, the government is part of this secret mess. Eventually, a decision is made to shut this crazy thing down. However, something is happening in the parallel universes and everyone’s worst nightmare is coming true. OH! And the universes are named after old TV shows (i.e. Gunsmoke, Jeopardy, etc.) which is AMAZING!

We encounter quite a crazy cast of characters throughout the book. This includes people with political positions (one with a slogan of “Make American Stupid Again”), time travelers, assassins, scientists, and regular ole people. There is even a horde of quickly learning, while extremely gullible and naïve, AI’s.

The baddies are determined to take over the program and destroy anyone who stands in their way to ultimately own the future by manipulating the past. As if power wasn’t cruel enough, it becomes villainous and ultimately the future travelers come back to manipulate the past for power. It’s insanity with internal mutiny from other universes! Bringing the team back together is only half the fun. And when they finally do collide, things get really exciting! The characters are witty and fun but when the AI’s get involved, things get even better!

The author did an incredible job of bringing a very surreal science fiction story to life but also adding in a lot of laughs and sarcastic eyerolls. It seriously had me turning pages like a mad woman. I highly recommend that you pick this up and meet the Lady Godiva, the Prophet Shehoo, Leviticus Deuteronomy Humphollar, and the many other characters within these pages.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

#Review – App by Rayne Havok

Salem logs on to her favorite app. Her and Kyle are a match. The night starts out fun, with both of them eager to take things further.

The next morning, however, Salem wakes with no recollection of the evening.

Salem joins a dating app that is used for a one night thing only. Those are the rules. No commitments or anything. Just some fun. She comes across Kyle’s profile and decides to choose him for her fun. They meet up and go on a date. But the night doesn’t exactly go as planned. Or does it? She wakes up with no memory of the night before but ends up getting proof of what happened. There’s a nice little twist at the end that I wasn’t expecting. This story is a short, fun read that proves that they do in fact have an app for anything.

#WOTR25 #BDSM #DarkRomance – Defiled Innocents, A dark mafia romance by Measha Stone

Amelia Moreau is barely holding herself together in the wake of her brother’s death. Lukas had been her guardian, her rock—and now, his loss has left her adrift. But when she learns the terms of her inheritance, her grief turns to shock: to claim the fortune Lukas left behind, she must marry. Not just anyone, but Dimitri Dragunov, a commanding Russian mob boss whose reputation is as dark as the secrets he keeps.

Her first instinct is defiance. She doesn’t need her brother’s money; she’s managed without it and can continue to do so. But rejecting Dimitri isn’t without consequences. Too many lives depend on her decisions, and walking away would leave the people she’s vowed to protect vulnerable. She has no choice but to agree.

Determined to endure the arrangement, Amelia steels herself for a cold, transactional union devoid of intimacy or emotion. But Dimitri has no intention of allowing her to fade into the background as his wife. With a dominance that leaves her breathless, he demands not just her compliance but her surrender—mind, body, and soul.

As she navigates her enigmatic husband’s world of control and obsession,
unsettling truths about her family begin to unravel. The brother she idolized wasn’t the man she thought he was, and the path Amelia is now on is darker—and far more dangerous—than she ever imagined.

Review by Twinsie Angie

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

GAH!!  This book was everything you want and expect from a Measha book.  I will say I have listened to books 1-4 on audio but missed book 5 so jumping into 6 didn’t leave me confused at all.  However, I would suggest reading the other books.  Not because you will be confused but because they are that freaking delicious.

I 1,000,000% love Measha’s alphas.  They are so ALPHA.  Dimitri is no different.  He is arrogant, confident, and so not going to fall in love with his wife..eye roll…his cousins are just ridiculous with how they follow their wives all around by their dicks….LOL

Another think I love about Measha’s books is that her females are not women who tower from the alpha men they deal with.  Amelia is no different.  She is a woman who runs her business and will not be pushed around by anyone.  She also goes and yells at a powerful mafia man who things she will marry him.

The love story between these two is amazing.  It is all so dang spicy….like SPICY!!!  Which is the next reason why I love Measha’s stories.  I mean the chemistry is always off the chain hot.  Amelia and Dimitri are no different.

As with all her books you get great banter, lots of love and respect, family togetherness, and twists and turns that leave you guessing.  If you want a great series, then this is one to start with or continue with if you enjoy the series already.

Measha Stone is a USA Today bestselling romance author with a deep love for romantic stories, specifically those involving the darker side of romance, all the possessive dominant heroes, and their feisty heroines. If you love a well deserved happily ever after, you will enjoy her books.

#Review – Test Town by Leigh Kenny

Welcome to Test Town.
Population: Zero

When Savannah and her friends decide on a sightseeing pit stop at a long-abandoned nuclear testing facility, something feels off from the outset.
Dilapidated houses. Quiet, dusty streets. And mannequins.
So many mannequins.

With a growing sense of unease, the group soon learns that even in an abandoned town in the middle of nowhere, you’re never truly alone.

Oh this was a fun and super creepy little read. There’s just something about dolls and mannequins that give me the heebie jeebies.

Savannahs, her brother and his friends, are driving through the dessert and decide to stop at Test Town. There’s no human life and only mannequins. So not unsettling in the least right? Unfortunately for the group, things take a turn for the worse.

Although this was a super short story, I really enjoyed it! Now I need to find more books about creepy dolls and mannequins.

Review by Twinsie Tenise

Ugh, what the what did I just listen to?!
Last night , a friend told me they were reading this book. (It was Twinsie Jo. I’m sure you will be seeing her review soon if you haven’t already.) I was intrigued with the blurb, so I dove right in.
For at least 75% of this book, I was either irritated or angry. The other 25%, I was confused af. I’m still replaying it in my head, waiting for my friend to finish so we can compare notes.  Well notes have been compared and it seems her feelings matched mine. lol I love an impromptu buddy read!

If you have limits to what you will read, I would highly suggest reading the trigger warnings first.
I love this author, and even though I know she can write an epic twist, I never see them coming.
