Sophie Stern

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Sophie Stern – I love writing stories as much as I love reading! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been obsessed with books and fictional characters. I first got hooked on reading with The Boxcar Children, and then I read The Babysitter’s Club Little Sister, The Babysitter’s Club, Dear America, and Sweet Valley High. The best thing about books is that you can reread them a hundred times and always experience something new and different.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

The first book is always hardest for me because you’re setting everything up and have to balance what to include in the first book versus what comes later.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I think when you dive into a new set of characters, you naturally explore the relationship through a fresh lens, so it’s something that happens naturally as you write. Each character has their own backstory and interests, so their story will naturally be different.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Learn as much as you can, but mostly focus on just writing that first book. The writing really is the hardest part!

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

8-10 hours

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

Every character is my favorite, but lately I’ve been really connecting with Melody from “Sweet Nightmares: The Vampire’s Melody.” She’s feisty and brave and doesn’t let anything keep her down.

What is your definition of success?

Living a peaceful, happy life.

#WOTR23 #Review Zombie Survival for Foster Kids (A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Adventure) by L.C. Mortimer

Zombie Survival for Foster Kids: A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Adventure by [L.C. Mortimer]

Surviving the zombie apocalypse is tough.
Surviving foster care is even tougher.

14-year-old Lamech Eris has been in foster care for the past three years and is about to be reunited with his dad when the zombie apocalypse happens.

Now he’s trapped in a house with his foster mom, Madison, and the only way to get to his dad is by going directly through the city.

Too bad it’s filled with the undead.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

I feel sort of weird saying this since it is a zombie book, but this is a great “feel good” story. I really enjoyed the fact that it is told from a different perspective, the caseworker/foster mother and the foster child. The real part of the story is being able to love and protect a child that is not yours. Even though the undead are walking the streets, the foster mother tries to move heaven and earth in an effort to reunite the father and son. Lamech is a great kid and even with the insanity going on, he and Madison lean on each other to make it to the end. It is an interesting and quick read. The ending is tied up nicely but could go on with a continued journey. Either way, I definitely recommend this one!

#WOTR23 – #Review – Don’t Cry Over Spilled Potions (Which Village, Book 3) by L.C. Mortimer aka Sophie Stern

Don't Cry Over Spilled Potions (Which Village Book 3) by [L.C. Mortimer]

For fans of Buffy, Charmed, and Hocus Pocus comes a story about second chances and new beginnings.

Don’t cry over spilled potions.

Once upon a time, I was in love.

My husband was stolen from me before I was ready, but I found him again.

Now he’s back.

He’s here with me in Which Village, but he has no memory of the past and no idea that the two of us were inseparable.

When a foe from his werewolf days threatens to tear us apart, Stanley and I have a choice to make, and it’s not going to be an easy one.

Don’t Cry Over Spilled Potions is the third book in the WHICH VILLAGE series. This book features female main characters who are middle-aged (or fast approaching it) and who have magical powers.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

Excellent finale for the Which Village series! I absolutely love this series and Don’t Cry Over Spilled Potions is no different. Jaden and Stanley’s love story is one that against all odds should continue. Now that Jaden has her husband back we get to experience what exactly Stanley is and has been going through….absolute hell. People are tricky and sneaky, but to find out you are something you are not feels like a curse. It is almost like Jaden and Stanley have to meet again. Neither know much about the other but both feel the connection. Is that connection going to be enough to save them? That’s the question, my friends. “The curse of the werewolves is a nasty one.” Both, Jaden and Stanley, have to deal with their own feelings of self worth and wondering if they are good enough. But when push comes to shove, true colors shine bright! If you are looking for something that is a bit different from the normal witches, werewolves, and things that go bump in the night, you need to read this series!

#WOTR23 #Review Once Upon a Curse (Which Village, book 2) by L.C. Mortimer aka Sophie Stern

Once Upon a Curse: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Which Village Book 2) by [L.C. Mortimer]

Once upon a curse…

Once upon a time, Which Village was a great place to live. At least, that’s what people tell me. Now, even though the witch who cursed the moon is dead, the town still seems to be under some sort of hex.

What’s causing the strange problems that are happening in Which Village?

Who is the mysterious stranger who has appeared in town?

And most importantly, am I ever going to figure out the secrets my mother left behind?

Once Upon a Curse is the second book in the WHICH VILLAGE series. This book features female main characters who are middle-aged (or fast approaching it) and who have magical powers.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

Magic, curses, and spells…oh my! And I can’t forget about floating pies. There are floating pies, ya’ll!

Magic comes with a price and Jaden is experiencing it firsthand. The story picks up a year after book 1. This chapter in the journey also gives us a better view into Eliza’s life, which I love! Things in Which Village have settled down, but Eliza has been putting her heart into a new annual festival in hopes of bringing some tourism in that will help celebrate magic and the paranormality that is Which Village. Jaden is getting antsy because she is not getting anywhere with finding anymore clues from her mom’s testing and research, plus she isn’t getting any closer to finding her dead husband. Things go awry when someone from the deep dark past shows up and definitely throws some crazy spells around.

One of my favorite things about this series so far is the quirkiness of the stories. It’s funny, heartwarming, and has a bit of a thriller vibe too. The story moves fast so you experience many emotions and feelings pretty quickly. Oh, and Jaden’s character is made to be real. She is going through life with the same emotions and thoughts that many of us do. She is sooooo relatable and one of my favorite characters. I can’t wait for the next book because I can’t imagine what other twists and turns we will come across.

#WOTR23 #Review A Hex a Day (Which Village, Book 1) by L.C. Mortimer aka Sophie Stern

A Hex a Day: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Which Village Book 1) by [L.C. Mortimer]

A hex a day keeps the werewolves away…

My mom is dead.

At 34 1/2 years old, this shouldn’t bother me nearly as much as it does, especially considering the fact that we haven’t spoken in years.

But she’s my mom.

And it bothers me.

I make my way to her home as quickly as I can. She lived in a little town in the middle of nowhere, but as soon as I start working my way through her estate – organizing the chaos in her raggedy little cottage, sorting through her financial documents – strange things start to happen.

Suddenly, I wonder if I really knew my mother at all.

Suddenly, I wonder if her death was really an accident.

The town where she lived is full of mystery and chaos, and it doesn’t take long for me to realize that my mother’s killer is still out there – and that I might be their next victim.

Review by Twinsie Kelly

A Hex a Day. Why wouldn’t you want to give this book a try. Once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down. Never a dull moment!

“All I knew was that whatever was about to happen was going to change everything I knew about magic. Forever.”

Jaden’s story is incredible and will keep you on the edge of your seat. This poor girl loses her husband and soon thereafter, her mother. Just like any “normal” family, Jaden and her mother had their issues, but they still loved each other very much. Jaden hadn’t seen or spoken to her mother in years and decides to try and get to know her mother while going through the estate. This is when things really get wonky. Jaden arrives in Which Village and immediately recognizes that things are a bit different. The homes are a bit different, the people are a bit different, the evening is a bit different. As she is told her mother’s killer is still out there, she finds that her mother isn’t who she thought she was and that she was dabbling in things that others didn’t like. This is where my favorite twist comes in! I never saw it coming and was speechless. The more answers she gets, the more chaotic things get.

“Life truly was a journey, and sometimes the only way through the fire was straight through.”

Pure craziness at times. However, like a true heroin, she is able to solve one mystery, but I still have so many questions. Because of this, I can’t wait to dive into the next book in this series. I have questions and I demand answers!! LOL! A must read!

#WOTR22 #Review – Broken Undead (Stay Dead Book #3) by L.C. Mortimer aka Sophie Stern

Broken Undead (Stay Dead Book 3) by [L.C. Mortimer]

Zombies never stay dead.

It’s been a month since the zombie infection took hold of humans everywhere. One month and six days and still we don’t know what started the infection or how far it’s spread. All we know is that we’ve got to take this thing one day at a time if we want to stay alive.

And trust me: we want to stay alive.

Our little group has found ourselves in the heart of an undead city. Trying to make our way around the city didn’t work so well. We finally decided to just try to make our way through. We’re searching for other survivors. We’re searching for food. We’re searching for anything that can help us get Greta home to her family.

None of it is going to matter if the zombies claim us before we make our next move, though.

None of it’s going to matter if we can’t make it home.

Being plagued with the biggest nightmare of the emptiness looming in the future while searching for something that you aren’t going to find is sometimes what keeps you surviving. This group of survivors is one of my absolute favorites in the Zombie world. Everything from them surviving a sinking ship, a short adventure on a tiny island and the journey back to the mainland has brought them closer together…and is incredibly realistic. I swear that the journey this group is could absolutely happen. Darkness and death are literally everywhere. They holed up in a place to take a break and regroup. When they decide that it is time to go to try and get Greta home, they run into more twists and turns that they will have to navigate carefully through this madhouse that is the zombie apocalypse. This is a fast paced, very well written, page turner that you won’t be able to put down. I am on pins and needs for book four ‘Fear the Undead’!

The zombies didn’t go down with the ship.

They’re here.

They’re everywhere.

Winter and her friends need to find a new way to escape, a new way to keep fighting.

If only the dead would stay that way.

STAHP!!  Run and buy this awesome book if you are a zombie fan.  But actually wait, buy book 1 and then grab book 2.  Be ready to pre-order book 3 thought because this book leaves you wanting more!!!

The last book ended with Winter, Isaiah, and Greta landing on an island and praying it was safe.  This story picks up right where the last book ended. Our survivors are checking out the island when more survivors show up.  To say things aren’t peachy is an understatement.

Dude! Greta is a bad ass chick who people don’t even give enough credit too.  Winter is becoming quite a warrior as well.  Isaiah is another awesome member to the rag tag team.  They stick together and help each other when the other survivors start to make things difficult for trio.

To say this book is action packed is an understatement.  To say this book will keep it interesting is also an understatement.  I seriously cannot wait for more from the series.  The characters are growing more and more to be a family not just out of convenience but of actual compassion for each member.

I LOVE GRETA!! She is the perfect grandma and so many people underestimate her. The trio have finally decided that they need to get off this island, but they did not expect what happened next. Another lifeboat with survivors lands on their tiny island, which puts a kink in their plan. Something just isn’t right. Greta, Winter, and Isaiah all have a bad feeling. Next thing you know chaos erupts and they are scrambling to survive once again. Nothing can stay chaotic forever…everything will look better in the morning. Riiiight. Oh I want talk about what happened and about the really bad things and the badassery that Greta is….ooooohhhhhh how I want to tell you all about it, but I can’t! I refuse to give it all away. What I am saying is that there is so much going on in this story, I literally read it in one sitting, I was consumed by it! I am on pins and needles waiting to read the 3rd installment. I need to know what happens next!

Wild Undead (Stay Dead Book 1) by [L.C. Mortimer]

Zombies never stay dead.

Winter Hawk is on day three of a five-day cruise when the zombie infection decides to make its appearance.

She’s seen her share of bad days, but nothing compares to the fact that the people around Winter are dying and coming back to life in droves.

Winter has to get off of the cruise ship and away from the infection, no matter what it takes. Armed with a first aid kit, a couple of water bottles, and a few unlikely companions, she embarks on a journey that will change everything.

If she can manage to survive.

WILD! This is a zombie book that you definitely want to read. This story sucks you in from the very start and holds tight right to the very end. It is consuming. Winter is sort of a loner, but with friends. Even though this is a quick read, her back story pulls at your heart strings. You see her relaxing and trying to have fun when all hell breaks loose. She starts hearing stories and then the unthinkable happens when she, and many others, witness a madman eating the bartender! She knows she needs to start preparing for the worst. There are others that are in the same boat as her (no pun intended, lol) and this is how she meets Greta and Isaiah. As they start the race for their lives, they form an unlikely alliance and embark on a journey of survival. This is absolutely a wild ride and stuck with me long after the book ended. I have a feeling that the trio are going to come upon some crazy obstacles, but where their story goes….I have no clue. I am on pins and needles for the next installment. L.C. Mortimer is a new author for me, but bravo because you have a new fan!

The Chasing of Zombies (A Standalone Dystopian Thriller)

Zombies never stay dead. The end of the world wasn’t supposed to be like this. It was supposed to be fire and ice and chaos and burning, but it wasn’t. It was slow, and it was quiet, and it was unexpected. Ten years after the fall of civilization, Velvet lives alone. She lurks in the shadows, she never stays in the same place twice, and she does whatever it takes to protect her only companion: a mangy orange cat who started following her sometime in June. When Velvet stumbles across a group of survivors fighting in the streets, she realizes that life isn’t always what it seems, and that maybe the end of the world wasn’t quite as final as she thought it was.THE CHASING OF ZOMBIES is a dystopian adventure story by L.C. Review by Twinsie Angie

I received this book from Booksprout for an honest review.

ZOMBIE LOVE in full force!!  WHOOT WHOOT!!  So this book starts with Velvet and her precious buddy and only friend of the 10 year apocalypse, Dennis the cat.  LOL  Yes she has a cat friend.

Velvet has returned home to try and figure life out.  After traveling all over she hopes coming home will help her maybe find the answer to what happened??  All she finds is zombies and some strangers!!!  Velvet is not sure she should trust them.  Eshe and her crew are stunned to have been living here for a year and find a girl plus a CHILD in their town.  She worries she has been letting her guard down.

This story is a lot of world building in that we learn about the group and Velvet.  We are getting to know how the group functions and how Velvet has lived alone for so many years.  We see the new rag tag team forming a plan to save a child. Who in the world has a baby in this mess?  Who in the world leaves a child?  Is this a trap?  Who is setting up who?  So many questions but I loved the beginning of the series. I am kinda looking Winchester over like HEEEEY Big man!!!  Come hang with me *wiggles eyes*
