Marie Piper

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hello! I’m Marie Piper, I live in Chicago, and I write American Historical Romance.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I tend to think the following books in a series are harder than the first book, because you’ve got boundaries you’ve set for yourself and established things that you can’t really change.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

If you can find something – an element, a character, a scene – that you’re excited about and that feels fresh and new, it can carry you through the less-inspiring times.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Taking long solo walks to let your mind wander. Getting plenty of sleep. Reading books by other amazing authors.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

I don’t really have a daily routine – I’m a homeschool Mom, so I fit writing in whenever I can!

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I will always love Billie, the heroine of HIS BLUEBIRD BRIDE which is the first book in my Gilded Brides series, because I wrote her book in response to a writer’s group I was in at the time who basically all believed that a former prostitute or madam couldn’t be a heroine. I disagreed…so I wrote a series full of former prostitute/madam heroines. Billie’s book was the first time I felt really free to write what I wanted to read.

If any of your books were to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it? What book and who?

Christina Hendricks would be an amazing Billie in a movie of HIS BLUEBIRD BRIDE….though I think the Gilded Brides series could make for a good TV series, as there are plenty of characters to explore.

What is your definition of success?

Being able to write my weird little books and have some people like them. That’s enough for me.

Rocky Mountain Meltdown by Harley Easton
Writer Tessa Hazel can’t stand the cold, so when her agent banishes her to a Colorado ski lodge in January, she’s far from happy. To make things worse a surly hotel worker and her favorite frienemy are working to keep her out of the arms of a sexy ski instructor. Will a little extra snow fix everything or cause Tessa a major meltdown?

Body Heat by CM Peters
Whether it’s in the green valleys of Ireland or the cool land of Maine, love can bloom and wither as fast as a snowflake. Is it a good omen when two lonely hearts meet on a stormy night? Can they make it through when everything pulls them apart?

Off-Season by Marie Piper
Winter in a rafting town means blessed solitude as far as Eva is concerned, until sexy rafting guide Charlie shows up on New Year’s Eve. If the two of them can survive an ice storm, a bear, and each other, they just might realize they’re perfect together.

Finding Home by Sienna Saint-Cyr
When Marina scheduled her long overdue vacation to Leavenworth, Washington, all she’d wanted was a chance to sip her tea in the adorable Bavarian village and forget about her ex. But her plans quickly went awry when a hipster in a beanie stormed into the teashop demanding his rental manager fix her mistake… for she’d rented his cabin to Marina, while he’d planned to be there.

Damsel by Stephanie Bissette-Roark
Cassandra never wanted to return to that old, converted barn atop the hill. But when her estranged father leaves it all to her in his will, she journeys home to discover if any part of her broken past still remains. She didn’t expect to find Ethan Bailey waiting for her, a strange man who kindles in her powerful—but unwanted—feelings of familiarity. When a treasured childhood toy transports her into an imaginary world, Cassandra will come face-to-face with a man that looks just like Ethan, but whose medieval garb tells a different story. As the lines between make-believe and reality blur, will her new companion bring healing love and open her heart in the real world or will the monster of her past consume her?

All proceeds from this collection will go charities that support mental health research and aide.

Goodreads

I was gifted this book by the author after winning it in an author takeover.

Rocky Mountain Meltdown by Harley Easton

This was a sweet and quick read.  The story is about an author who along with her rival are checked into a ski resort for the weekend of writing and working.

Tessa is none to thrilled for the burly lumberjack, Bryce, who seems to keep judging her but is thankful for the hot as heck ski instructor, Kevin….or is she.

It seems our burly and grumpy lumberjack has a few secrets in the closet in regard to Tessa and her writing.

The story made me laugh at the antics of our rival author because who doesn’t love to see an enemy get their much deserved paybacks!  But seeing the connection between Bryce and Tessa develop and the ending chapter was a sweet ending to the story.

Off-Season by Marie Piper

This story was probably my favorite of the set of stories.

Eva was left her uncle’s diner in a small rafting town.  Eva is quite happy to live her life in solitude because she doesn’t feel she is good enough to be with the person she really desires.  Her fear and insecurity make her push him away at every turn.

Charlie is the owner of the main rafting group in the area and he is head over heals for Eva.  He has no idea what he did in the past to make her run but he is dead set on claiming her for the new year.

The couple have major issues because Eva thinks so many wrong things about Charlie is doesn’t really believe him when he tells her the truth.  When a scary situation with Charlie makes Eva run to help him, she slow opens her heart to what he might be….a really good guy.

I really enjoyed seeing Eva open up to Charlie and seeing him help her overcome some of her insecurities within herself.

#WOTR21 #AuthorSpotlight – Marie Piper

Marie Piper

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m Marie Piper. I live in Chicago with my husband, kiddo, and three cats. I write historical romance set in America, and I’m a big history nerd.

When you are writing a book, which is harder? The first book in the series or the others after it?

I find the subsequent books in a series way harder to write than the first, actually. Something about having all the wide open space in the world for the first book makes it easier than when I have to work within the confines of what exists for books to follow.

What comes first? The plot or characters

Since I write historicals, the idea usually comes from some sort of moment or image. For my Salem Witch Trials novella, A STRANGE AFFLICTION, I had been thinking about the time period and I had the idea for a woman skipping a stone over a pond…and the book was born from there.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

I’ve had the good fortune to meet a lot of my romance writing heroes at conventions and events, so I would actually choose Sarah Vowell.

If you could ask that author three questions about their writing, writing process, or books, what would they be?

1. How do you keep all the dates straight? 2. What time periods/events in American History would you love to write about? 3. When can we expect a NEW Book?

What is harder? The blurb writing, naming the book, or naming the series.

I. Hate. Writing. Blurbs.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

Probably my first trip to RT. It was the best kind of whirlwind for a newbie author and I met so many amazing people.

What is your definition of success?

Writing my weird little books and having some people enjoy them. I don’t need to be a bestseller to be happy as a writer.

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Marie Piper. I live in Chicago with my husband, kiddo, and three cats. I’m fascinated by American History, especially the parts we didn’t learn about in school.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

Coffee or tea and (lately) atmospheric and moody instrumentals playlists.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

I love meeting readers and seeing what interests them!

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

I’ve been fortunate to have met a bunch of my all-time favorite authors at signings and events, but I’ve never been in the same room as Lisa Kleypas…. Yet, anyway.

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I homeschool my son, so my free time is all over the place. I tend to write early in the morning before anyone else wakes up while everything is quiet and dark.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

I was fortunate to be a signing author at RT in Atlanta. There were so many romance fans there, it was really incredible!

#WOTRAttendingAuthor #Standalone The Thorns on His Rose- Marie Piper

A spicy Christmas novella.

Ohio. December, 1860.

Sheriff Charlie Calcut can count on two things every Christmas: his Mother feeding him until his pants don’t fit, and endless teasing about his bachelorhood. Not this year. To appease his mother, he wrote letters home crafting a fake fiancee. But now he’s expected to bring a real live woman home for Christmas, and the only one he can trust with this crazy plan is pants-wearing, hard-living Rose Hawthorne, better known as Thorny Rose.

There’s a war coming, and Rose means to be long gone on the way to Oregon before it reaches Ohio. So she can’t resist Charlie’s offer to help her on her way, and to have one last holiday full of home cooking and a loving family–even if it’s not her own.

Christmas festivities and cold nights pull them together with a passion neither expected, but is that enough to build a life upon? And when the whole world is going dark, can love be the light?

Very cute love story of Charlie and Rose who have known each other forever. Roses a tomboy you like to be alone and then not want anybody not even a man telling her what to do. Charlie was a local sheriff who needed someone to pretend to be his wife to go home for Christmas. Well lucky for Rose she got to be that girl, and not only did she agree to it but she got more than she ever thought she could bargained for.
