#WOTR20 #AuthorSpotlight – AJ Renee

A.J. Renee

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m AJ Renee, mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. I currently live in Illinois, but home is wherever my husband and kids are. I love a variety of things like reading, traveling, running, and vegging out on the couch.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I need my hot tea. I also can’t write if I’m distracted so sometimes that means listening to music if I use it to drown out other noises or no sounds when I’m home alone.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

Meeting readers and the other authors.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Kathleen Brooks

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

What is a schedule? HA! No seriously, I need to find a schedule, but I’ve been traveling more than usual. I try to get in my words when I can, but sometimes nothing happens.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

Having a reader squeal with excitement when she met me.

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

Widower’s Aura, my debut. It has emotional value to me as I wrote it during a really hard time. I’ve dedicated it to one of my best friends who passed and I miss every day.

#WOTR20 #AuthorSpotlight – C.J. Pinard

C.J. Pinard

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

I’m C.J. Pinard… I write paranormal and contemporary romance and work a crazy, insane day job that I can’t quit. But very soon, I’ll be retiring early! Until then, though, I’ll continue to stay up late at night writing my stories.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

Music is a must. I prefer to write at night when it’s dark and quiet. My go-to snack is caramel and cheddar popcorn and vodka. (Don’t ask, it works)

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

The atmosphere! Everyone is always so happy and excited to be there. The positivity lifts my spirits and fills my soul with happiness.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Stephen King. I’d pick his brain for hours (until he threatens to kill me).

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

Oh, hell no. I’m a binge writer. I put up a preorder then write the book in like two weeks.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

The day a reader posted that they tattooed my name/book on their body and tagged me in a post to show it off. I almost passed out. It’s kinda tied with the day I hit the USA Today bestseller list with my Enchanted Immortals box set. Also, almost passed out.

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

Why people always ask this question? LOL! Kovah Soul Seeker is a pretty awesome book, I must say. It was supposed to be a novella about a character from my Death’s Kiss series… I kept getting messages asking if the guy was gonna get his own book, so I obliged, thinking, “Eh, I’ll just write a novella about him.” 80,000 words later, the dude would NOT shut up in my head. It’s my longest book to date.

#WOTR20 #AuthorSpotlight – Ava Cuvay

Ava Cuvay

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Ava Cuvay. I write hot Sci-fi Romance and children’s picture books under another name. I like long romantic walks on the beach at sunset and… HAHAHA, I can’t even type that with a straight face. Seriously, exercise is not my jam. But I do live for romance stories, Star Wars references, wine, bacon, and inappropriateness.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I write at the dining room table, which is the central hub of the household. Not saying I’m particularly prolific while I’m there… especially if hubby is at his computer. But at least there’s no TV in that room to distract me 😉

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

Chatting with the readers! Meeting new people, talking about writing and romance with other kindred spirits, and (see previous answer) wine and inappropriateness.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Gena Showalter or Kresley Cole, because their voices are the reason I started down this path. But honestly, I’m impressed by *anyone* who writes and publishes… it is an honor to be among them!

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

Oh hell no (Can I say that?). I write whenever I can, when the muse strikes, or when the house needs cleaned.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

When Twinsie Kelly bought my first book at my first signing (which was the first WOTR). I’m pretty sure my jaw dropped and I stared blankly for several seconds, assuming I’d misheard. You mean, someone actually wanted to spend their money on my book?? Best. Feeling. Ever!!!

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

I hate to dust, so I’m not overly sentimental about “things,” but my favorite “book” is a journal where I wrote all the funny and delightful things my kiddos did when they were babies. Oddly enough, I don’t write much in that journal not that they are teenagers… Hmmm….. 😉

#WOTR20 #AuthorSpotlight – Amy Hale

Amy Hale

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

My name is Amy Hale and I’m an award-winning, best-selling author of paranormal romance, romantic comedy, and romantic suspense. I live in Southern Illinois with my wonderful husband and two fantastic children. We also live with more pets than any sane person should have.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

When writing I need a comfortable chair, a cup of coffee or large glass of tea, depending on the time of day, and my noise canceling headphones. Sometimes it’s just quiet, other times I write to music.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

I love meeting readers and getting to hang out with them. It’s also great to spend time with my author friends.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

I’ve met one of my unicorn authors – Julia Quinn. But if I had to chose another, it’d be J.K. Rowling.

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I’m currently a sit and go kind of person, because I’ve had to change the way I do things. But I’m currently working on a new schedule where I can write consistently every day.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

It’s so hard to choose. There have been so many amazing moments. I think it was when a young lady approached me and so nervous she could barely talk. She said she loved my books and was anxious about meeting me. I gave her a big hug and tried to make her comfortable while we talked. She was just so sweet!

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

My most prized possession would be my signed copy of The Duke and I by Julia Quinn.

#WOTR20 #5YearFamily #AuthorSpotlight – Miranda Shanklin

Miranda Shanklin

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Miranda Shanklin I write paranormal romance about witches. I live in central Illinois with my husband and two teenage children. we have two dogs, a turtle and three cats. I am a paralegal for my day job and write every chance I get. My mind is always spinning and coming up with the next story or working out what will come up next in the story I’m working on now. My family sometimes has a hard time keeping my attention because I will get lost in the story in my head, but instead of getting annoyed it has become a family joke.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I used to need it to be silent. My husband built me an office and put extra insulation around it as a sound barrier. Now I have to play Pandora so there is some kind of noise in the background. I always have peanut butter M&Ms and Mountain Dew there too.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

I love seeing other authors that I have met at other signings but I have to admit I can’t beat the feeling of meeting readers who have read one of my books and is there just to find me and wants the next book. Or hears what the books are about and gets excited to read them. That is what I do this for, the readers, so when they get excited it makes it all worth it.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Stephen King. I have been reading his books since I was a preteen. I don’t know if I would even be able to say anything if I came face to face with him. I would completely fan girl.

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I’m a sit and go whenever I have a chance kind of person. Just like I write. I don’t plan anything. I feel it’s too forced if I plan it out because then I have to follow this plan that’s already laid out. Then if something new comes to me I can’t do that because it will mess up the rest of the plan. I am just as surprised as to what is going to happen next in my books as everyone else. I tried doing a schedule and I ended up sitting there at a blank screen. I had to go back to just sitting down and writing when it felt right to me.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

I get a booth at a local festival every year and sell copies of my books. I had to stop writing for a little bit while I had some health issues. I had one woman come to my booth every year and ask if I had gotten my trilogy written and published yet. This year I had just gotten the last book published before the festival. She was so excited she was bouncing as she paid for the books. She said she was going home to re-read the series and then start the trilogy.
she was so excited. She didn’t lose interest, instead she just kept waiting and couldn’t wait to read what I had written. I am still amazed by that.

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

The first book I wrote. It will always be my most prized possession. It shows that I had a dream and no matter how much I was told it would never happen, I made it happen. I worked hard and I made my dream come true.

#WOTR20 #AuthorSpotlight – Maggie Adams

Maggie Adams

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Maggie Adams, Maggie Adams is an internationally bestselling romance author. Her first book in the Tempered Steel Series, the romantic comedy-Whistlin’ Dixie, debuted in Top 100 for Women’s Fiction, Humor, on November 2014. Since then, she has consistently made the various best seller 5-star list with her Tempered Steel Series. Her series has launched the tiny town of Grafton, Illinois, into international recognition with sales in Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Canada and the UK. She is the recipient of various awards for writing excellence including the Readers Favorite Award, the Indie Romance Convention Romantic Comedy Award, The Top Shelf Comedy Award and the New Apple Awards -Suspense.
She also writes paranormal romance, women’s erotica, and women’s fiction. Maggie’s books can be found on eBook and paperback on her website www.maggieadamsbooks.com and all major book sites.
When she’s not writing, she can be found dancing, singing and cooking (usually all at the same time), and spending time with her family and friends.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

popcorn is my favorite snack anytime, but don’t place a cheesecake in front of me – it’ll be gone before you hand me the napkin! Yum! When writing, I usually don’t snack, but have lemon water with plenty of ice next to me. As for noise level, I like to have on soothing instrumental music to write, but developing characters and plotlines, I plug in the headphones and hit Pandora for a variety of songs until one sparks an idea, then I’m off and dancing until I figure out the whole story or my knees say ‘enough!’ Place to sit? I have an office upstairs, but I hardly use it. Attractive Over Forty Man, aka, the hubs, likes me to be close during the evenings, so I write in the dining room or bring the laptop to the sofa.
It works pretty well, as I read passages out loud and he tells me whether a guy would actually say or do that. I have learned that no guy is going to talk about anything if a girl is naked, so those long romantic conversations happen AFTER the, well, you know.
I also run an in-home daycare, so I have to be careful what’s popping up on the laptop during the day. It makes for a limited time to write as I’m also very family oriented, but I manage to churn out three or four novellas and a couple of novels a year.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

I LOVE meeting the folks on Facebook in real life! And being able to talk to other authors about our craft is so helpful. I always come away from book signings with renewed enthusiasm and ideas. But what I noticed from the first time I signed there and what continues to this day, is the Writers on the River is my Favorite Book Event. It’s like a great big family reunion of folks you really like! lol

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Jayne Ann Krentz. I started reading her historicals under Amanda Quick and fell in love with her style. I try to emulate her style within my own writing – humor, suspense, and smart, sassy women who aren’t wilting wallflowers.

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

With the daycare and my own family obligations, it’s a hit and miss most days, but I do manage to write everyday. I can’t NOT write. Even if I write stuff at midnight after an exhausting day, I have to get it out. Now, it may be jibberish when I look at it the next day, but I can usually figure it out. I also use the dictation option on Word which helps when I don’t have a lot of time. I’ve found it’s the only program that can actually understand my fast paced Southern with some degree of accuracy.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

My first St. Louis book signing was PennedCon and I walked into the lobby wondering where in the world to go. I noticed a lady with a lanyard with the logo and asked her. She stood up from the sofa, looked at me and shouted, “Holy F***! It’s Maggie Adams!” She hugged me, told me all about my books, and I stood there stunned that someone actually knew who I was. Whenever I feel lost or a little depressed about my writing future, I remind myself that even if it all goes away tomorrow, I’ll have those wonderful memories and the fabulous people I’ve me through the years.

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

Yes, I do. It’s a little notebook that my children gave to me. It has Winnie the Pooh on it and inside the cover they wrote how proud they were of me for trying to go after my dream and that one day everyone would know I was a great writer. I believe they were about 12 and 7 at the time. Its in a safe with our birth certificates, marriage license, and other sweet treasures.

#WOTR20 #authorspotlight – Tabetha Waite

Tabetha Waite

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Tabetha Waite – I wanted to write since I was nine years old, but it wasn’t until I discovered the romance genre and happy endings that I decided I wanted to write historicals. I got my first publishing contract in 2016 and released “Why the Earl is After the Girl,” the first book in my Ways of Love series. Since then, I’ve won several awards for my novels. After transitioning to Indie, I’ve been involved in numerous anthologies with other authors. However, I did sign with Soul Mate Publishing for a historical paranormal that is set to come out in April.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I usually sit on my couch and I HAVE to listen to music! Different songs help to set the tone for certain scenes.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

The opportunity to meet people!

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Probably Lisa Kleypas or JR Ward

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I work part time as a lunch lady, so I generally write during the week before and after work. I’m off in the summer so I get a lot done then. I try to save my weekends for my family.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

Honestly, any time a reader messages me and says how much they liked my book is pretty memorable. It gives me the motivation to keep writing, that I’m not doing this just for my personal enjoyment.

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

I have two actually. Midnight Bride by Kathleen Drymon was my bridge story from American to English history, and A Rose in Winter by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, just because it is so fascinating!

#WOTR20 #authorspotlight – Samantha Lind

Samantha Lind

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Samantha Lind! I’m a contemporary / sports romance author. I’m originally from Alaska, but call Iowa home now where I live with my two boys and my husband. If I’m not writing, I can usually be found with either my kindle in my hand or an earbud in listening to an audio book! By day, I’m an accountant and work from home. My kids (and husband!) all keep me busy as they all play hockey! Our love of hockey runs deep in our house, so much so that my largest series is based on a fictional hockey team!

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I have four go-to writing spots. 1) my couch! I’ll sit down after my kids are in bed and write for a few hours while watching TV. 2) My desk in my office. 3)Starbucks! I tend to get the most writing done when I pack it up and head to Starbucks for the day. I take my earbuds, get my Strawberry Refresher drink and let the words flow! 4) Last, if we’re on vacation, my husband will drive while I write in the car! I wrote about 80% of Marry Me while we rolled on down the road!

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

Meeting readers! Seriously you guys are the best!

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

Kate Canterbary

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

Due to our busy family schedule, I don’t write everyday. I sometimes go a few weeks without writing. I try and give myself a few weeks off between books so I don’t burn out. I’m also very motivated by deadlines, so once I pick a release date and book my PR/editor/proofreader etc. all in, I do my best to stick to it! Having those dates in mind keeps me focused and on track for the most part.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

So many come to mind! Seeing feedback on my very first book baby! Attending my first signing and having a reader come up to me excited to meet me! Getting my first “orange tag” on amazon…. so many exciting moments I’ve had in the last couple of years!

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

I’m not a paperback reader anymore, so I have very few.

#WOTR20 #authorspotlight – Ellis Leigh

Ellis Leigh

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Ellis Leigh, writer of words, drinker of coffee, mother of daughters, and manger of projects.

When you are writing, what are some go to’s that you needs? IE Foods to eat, noise level, place to sit.

I’ve become addicted to Smart Sweets sour gummy bears and peach rings. They’re made of prebiotic fiber and only contain 3g of sugar per bag–so they’re healthy! At least that’s what I like to tell myself. If I’m not eating low carb, I’ll have some Smart Pop popcorn around. And coffee (during the day) or flavored water (at night). I write on my couch with my feet up and my laptop in my lap (it’s not just a clever name after all) and require quiet–no music, no television.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

I LOVE getting to interact with other authors. Plus just being around books! But my favorite–the absolute bestest thing in the world about being at a signing–is interacting with my readers. They are the sweetest, and I adore meeting them and sharing our love of the worlds I’ve built. Definitely come see me, give me a hug, and talk books with me. I’ll love you forever.

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

I got to meet mine! It’s Kelley Armstrong, and I walked up to her during a convention and fangirled all over the place. It was terrifying and awkward and perfect all at once.

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I’m a woman who prefers structure, so I get up early and write for an hour before I have to get ready for work. Every weekday, I do this. Evenings and weekends I’ll work on admin things if I need to, but usually I just knit and hang out with my daughters. That first hour of the day is mine, though. Totally.

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

I was at a huge reader convention in Dallas a few years back–totally in line for coffee in my pajamas, mind you–and a reader screamed my name from across the lobby. I love that memory and pull it up whenever I’m feeling a little not-so-great. Whoever she was, she totally made my year!

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

I own paperback copies and a few of the graphic novels from Kelley Armstrong’s Women Of The Otherworld series. Those sit on a top shelf right along with my Harry Potter and Twilight collections. They’re sacred to me.

#WOTR20 #5YearFamily #AuthorSpotlight – Jenna Jacob

Jenna Jacob

Tell us your name and then a bit about yourself.

Hey gang! My name is Jenna Jacob and I’m super excited to be here with the sexy, sultry ladies of Twinsie TalkI If you haven’t made it to Writers On The River yet – you NEED to go. It’s an amazing event and I’m honored to be a part of ALL the fun!! Okay, about me – well…I’ve been writing for almost seven years and have a couple of hot and steamy BDSM series out: The Doms Of Genesis and another that I co-author with Shayla Black and Isabella LaPearl called, The Doms Of Her Life. I also have a sizzling hot contemporary series: The Hotties Of Haven as well as a new smoking hot contemporary series to be announced soon. Okay – So I work out of my office which was converted from my old dining room. So I’ve got space (which never fails to fill up) for books, books, and more books. I listen to a lot of different stations either on Pandora, Amazon music, or any number of playlists I’ve got stashed away.

What are you favorite things about attending signings?

The READERS!! OMG – ya’ll are AMAZING! I love meeting new people, catching up with friends from the year before, and hugging the stuffing out of everybody!! I wouldn’t be even be at a signing if it weren’t for you guys!!

What author would you love to meet (Who is your unicorn author)?

I’m a lucky lady! I’ve already met my Unicorn Author: Dean Koontz!

When you are writing, do you have a consistent schedule where you write every day at the same time or are you a sit and go on different days to get it done kinda person?

I’m a Virgo so I am a schedule FREAK! I usually set a word count for 3,000 words for the day. I don’t always achieve that number depending on L-I-F-E, but it helps me formulate release dates and helps me stay on track. Oh, look….a squirrel. (Yeah, I do that a LOT!! LOL)

What is your favorite memory so far as an author?

I have a LOT of favorite memories so far. Getting the chance to meet – in person – people I talk to on social media is always a thrill. But one I’ll never forget is the first time a reader came up to me, and asked for my autograph. I’m sure I had that preverbal Deer-In-The-Headlights look on my face. LOL

Do you have a book that is your most prized possession? What is it and why is it so amazing?

OMG if you could see my bookshelves you’d be asking: How in the world is she going to answer that one? LOL Actually, the book that I most treasure isn’t in my office. It’s in the family room. It’s a cookbook from 1847 that my husband Sean’s grandmother gave to me before she died. And I found the best Bread Pudding recipe in that sucker… OMG it’s to die for!! LOL
