#twinsiefortheday – The Children’s Game by Max Karpov

A frighteningly plausible, fast-paced thriller about a Russian cyberattack on America, involving fake news and anonymous hackers.

The CIA has learned that the Kremlin is about to launch a sophisticated propaganda operation aimed at discrediting and disrupting the United States and ultimately restoring Russia to great nation status. Intercepted intelligence suggests that the operation will hinge on a single, breaking news event in Eastern Europe, supported by a sustained campaign of disinformation and cyberattacks. Code-named the “Children’s Game”–a chess stratagem that leads to checkmate in four moves–it was probably conceived by a Russian billionaire and former FSB officer named Andrei Turov. For years Turov has been developing the infrastructure for a new kind of warfare that exploits weaknesses in western democracies and manipulates public opinion. His organization offers the Kremlin plausible deniability.

But the United States has its own secret Christopher Niles, a former CIA intelligence officer, who understands Turov’s ambitions and capabilities. It falls to him and his small team–composed of his journalist half-brother Jon, a special forces operative he would trust with his life, and Anna Carpenter, a resourceful US senator with deep roots in the intelligence community–to unravel Turov’s plot and restore truth to a world spiraling into chaos.

The Children’s Game is a frighteningly realistic, timely thriller that delves into the secret corners of Vladimir Putin’s Russia, exploring the shifting world order and the murky realm of US-Russia relations.

Espionage
The devil is in the details, and they can be so easy to miss. The beginning of this book has a lot of players
as the lies beginning to hit the news and a lot of half-truths, so you need to pay a bit of attention to who
is hinting at what to try to figure out if they really know anything.
The phrase “noise at the expense of comprehension” caught my attention and stuck with me through
the book. I feel like this quote really is the heart of the beginning of Russia’s plan, and it really strikes
true in our current media as well. So much is put out there by so many different people that it can be
hard to find the truth. It’s a little chilling how true this story could become.
This book is a clever twist of espionage, lies, twisted patriotism, half-truths told to reporters, and how
easy it is to sway public opinion. The other things this book highlights is how hard it is to get people to
believe the truth after they believe the lies, and how far people are willing to go to hide what they have
done. Once a lie goes “viral” your life could be over even when the truth comes out or you can become a
hero only to fall just as fast. Russia has become a master at helping stories go viral, and pumping
disinformation to the public, and when key people have secrets to protect it can take too long to get to
the truth.
The end of the book seems to linger just a bit, but stick with it because Russia’s master mind had one
last little lie that you don’t know about until the end. Kudos to the author for the hidden fourth move.
There is no explicit adult content, and there is a bit of violence.

MAX KARPOV is the author of THE CHILDREN’S GAME, the Amazon best-selling thriller about Russian cyber warfare, fake news, and modern espionage. The novel features former CIA officer Christopher Niles.

THE CHILDREN’S GAME “…captures perfectly the mentality of Vladimir Putin’s Russia … And on top of that, the book is near impossible to put down. A must-read.” – Former Acting CIA Director Michael Morell

I received this book for an honest review.

This set is a sweet romance series set in one town. The stories are mostly no adult content, more of a
you know what is going on, but you don’t know the details, until the last story which gives just a bit
more.
The first book Kiss at the Cove gives some background while introducing us to Prudence Parker and her
aunt. Prudence is a wedding planner that is seriously dedicated, and her older aunt owns a chocolate
shop. Aunt Ruby is such a character, and even owns a parrot. We are also given some background on
Corsair’s Cove and its lively stories of pirates and ghosts that are part of the town’s history. Pru literally
runs into a new scientist in town and ends up getting his help on some last-minute wedding issues.
When family tragedy strikes will they be able to rely on each other, will they run, or will a ghost find a
way to match make from the beyond?
Book two Kiss In The Wind introduces us to Livy Tarbert, a food chemist, that moves back to the cove to
help with the chocolate shop. She’s got some interesting ideas for some new chocolate creations that
might give some people cause to pause. Then there is Mack, the tavern owner, who is trying to find new
ideas for improving the town but not everyone on the town council is willing to agree to his plans. They
both must make a decision about taking a risk on love and there is a chance that a ghost may be helping
them along.
In book three Kiss On The Beach we meet Jamie, a carpenter, and Brynn. Brynn is the only cousin with
no interest in helping to run the chocolate shop and even wants to sell her share as she a CFO of a big
company. The only trouble is that when she shows up in town, the lawyer is busy playing pirate for the
weekend. Jamie has had a crush on Brynn for years and decides to try to show her what she’s been
missing. In the end Brynn must decide if she wants the big fancy job with the corner office or a life of
love in a small town.
The final book in the series Kiss In The Dark is really interesting. We meet the last of the cousins Eloise
and discover that she is sensitive to spirits and has dealt with some nasty, vindictive ghosts in the past
that have left her very careful of what goes on around her. We also get the interesting back story of the
ghost that haunts the chocolate shop, and how he must find love for all of the cousins. Eloise does not
make this easy for him at all. We also learn that not only have ghosts been involved in the town, but so
have witches and Captain Blackthorne is knee deep in the middle of it all. When Blackthorne decides
that no mortal man is worthy of Eloise things really get interesting.
There is also a short story at the end called Kiss at the Alter. This is a short story about the couple from
book 1 and what happens on their wedding day. There is a little dash of ghost meddling and of course
family meddling. It’s interesting and sweet. It also sets it up for a branch series.
I really enjoyed this set, and the history of Corsair’s Cove. Each book is not very big, and I finished the
whole set in one weekend, but I also read really fast. The world building is excellent, and the characters
are well developed. The family grows and changes as each character is introduced, and the cousins learn
how to work together and be a family. Over all an excellent overreaching arch that each individual book
ties into well.

#Review #Horror #Novella – Don’t Look In The Trees by Jason Nickey

Don’t Look In The Trees; the main rule in Appalachia. Many question why, but Justin and Billy found out the hard way on their way home from a bonfire party after coming across a fallen tree and mysterious lights coming from the sky. Can they survive the night and the strange beings coming from the forest that surrounds their cabin?

From Jason Nickey, Author of ‘Road Hazards’ and ‘They Come From Within’ comes a new fast paced sci-fi/horror novella.

This was a short fun little read.

Justin and Billy are heading home after a party with their drunk friend Kevin. While they’re driving, they see a bright light from the sky and the rest of their night doesn’t go as planned.

I do wish this story was a little longer but that’s a me problem, not the author’s. When the alien type stuff started happening, it reminded me of many alien movies I have seen over the years. Creepy crawly things coming out of someone’s mouth? Yes please!

If you want a quick read about a couple who are just trying to survive the night while dealing with aliens and the unknown, be sure to check this story out!

I received this book for a review.

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve posted but this was a good story to come back for. I don’t get
the chance to review many audio books so of course I had to check this one out.
To start with I must say the narrator is excellent. She does a really good job with different inflections for
different voices and helping give the characters their own speech patterns. It’s very easy to listen along
and pick out who is talking.
The story itself is very interesting. The world building is very good, and it felt a bit reminiscent of the
show the Fringe. There is a reality parallel to ours and it is similar but not the same as ours. Where we
focus on a balance of things with our resources, they have focused on war leading to some interesting
differences.
The characters are also very well developed and take you through a range of experiences that draw you
in. Serenity is a very logical thinker and analysis everything all the time which leads to some anxiety in
some situations as to what is the best course to take as she weighs the odds as to what is the best result
and struggles to act in situations that require quick thinking. However, when it comes to studies and lab
tests this serves her well and she excels. While this may sound like you will get bored, I assure you this is
far from the truth. The author does an excellent job keeping things from sounding analytical and instead
you get Serenity’s emotions and deeper thoughts instead of boring analysis.
Overall, I think this story has earned it’s full 5 stars as you are drawn into Serenity’s worry about her dad
and his work and then into a whole new world. As she fights to find her dad and uncovers the truth
about his work things are not as simple as just going home. She makes new friends and grows into a
different person who knows her worth and what she is fighting for. I would recommend this for anyone
ages 15+ and just a bit of a warning there is a slight cliff hanger at the end. I am really looking forward to
a book 2.

Bryan Prosek is a young adult writer and business attorney. Along with his first two novels, The Brighter the Stars and A Measure of Serenity, he has published books and articles in legal trade journals and magazines. When he isn’t writing or practicing law, you can probably find him watching dystopian and science fiction movies or television shows. He loves the big screen and the small screen. There’s a good chance that he’ll be watching one of the numerous Star Trek movies or series, but he could be watching anything from Guardians of the Galaxy to The Conjuring.

Not that it matters…because Claire doesn’t plan on nurturing a relationship. She just wants to get this cutie out of her system.

Good luck with that. Adrian’s not willing to pursue any sort of relationship, just for fun or not. But the chemistry between them can only be ignored for so long…

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the Rocky Mountain Rockstars series.  I could not wait to read about the quite drummer, Adrian, and the amazing tattoo artist, Claire.

Intent to Murder ask Claire to design a logo for the band. Claire and Adrian see sparks fly but both hold back. Adrian doesn’t date due to things that happened in his past. Claire has issues with trust due to her past and parents. I loved when these two are together but when they let their paranoia get in the way things go astray.

I liked that not only did we get to see Claire and Adrian navigate their friendship to more than that relationship but we get to see the other band members. I enjoyed that we get to see more of the inside workings of the band like their thought process for the possible tours and merchandising.  This was more than a love story but also a journey through an entire bands livelihood. I cannot wait for more of this series. I love the band members and the ones they fall in love with.

#Fantasy #Twinsiefortheday – House of Beating Wings by Olivia Wildenstein

Free the crows, Fallon, and they will make you queen.

Until an oracle predicted my regal future, I’d never imagined myself rising above the curve of my round ears. After all, I was the magicless halfling loved by beasts but loathed by every pure-blooded faerie at court. Well… by all but one.

Dante Regio, prince of Luce, had owned my heart since he gave me my first kiss. If gathering a slew of iron relics could help me overthrow the current monarch and crown his brother to rule at my side, then treasure hunting I’d go.

If only the oracle had warned me what winged demon I was releasing into the world.

And that I’d become this demon’s obsession.

Fans of Sarah J. Maas and Mary E. Pearson will devour this epic fantasy romance full of deceit, betrayal, and false loves that could swallow a person whole.

I received this book for an review.

Hi everyone! I stumbled upon this little gem and thought I would share my thoughts. You know those
wonderful Greek stories where people interpret prophecy the wrong way due to their own interests?
Yeah, this story follows those lines and is another warning to those who believe in prophecies.
Fallon is the main character in this story and is young and reckless. She loves a prince despite being a
social outcast and he seems to care for her as well. Even now I’m not sure of his level of feelings and I
have questions! Fallon’s grandmother tries to protect her the best that she can but Fallon does not
make it easy. When Fallon is told that she is part of a prophecy she believes that it will help her get to be
with her prince and live happily ever after. Life, however, is not that simple and things go sideways fast
as Fallon learns the truth about her kingdom’s past and how a previous war was ended.
The world building is great and I was drawn into the society and aspects of Fallon’s life. As the prophecy
unfolds so does more of Fallon’s world and truths that will change everything. Magic, family betrayals,
racial discriminations, bitter rivalry, and the fate of an entire race weave together in a tapestry of broken
hearts and innocence lost. Fallon’s journey of innocent love through revelations that slowly change
every belief that she has leaves you wondering if she could possible remain even close to the person
that she was.
I really enjoyed this book and recommend it for anyone 13+ years. There is a scene between Fallon and
the prince where they come together but there are zero adult details. This is more focused on fantasy
than romantic details and is excellent for that choice. Book 2 recently released and I will be checking
that out to see the aftermath of the prophecy and how Fallon copes with the fallout.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

To say I was excited for this book…well any in the series for that fact…would be a total an understatement.  Each of the men has stolen my heart completely.  I THINK Grey is still my favorite but dang it, Jordan is riiiiiight next to him tapping on Grey’s NFL Shoulders.

Whit…oh Whit.  She is so closed off after a bad relationship.  She was all for a one-night stand with no strings, but she ended up with a lifelong parting gift by the name of Heidi. Whit runs home to the small town she grew up in and refused to admit anything about Heidi’s parentage. She was just home to raise her daughter.

Jordan was a goner the second he saw Whitley.  When he persuaded her to have the one night-stand, he was done. He was ready to convince this stubborn woman how perfect they would be, but she disappeared on him.  When he finds her, and with his own drama happening, he changes everything to be with her.

These two…OMG YES!!  I freaking loved their story.  My favorite lines is Jordan talking to Whitley

I will never not want you Whitley Harper.  You’re it for me.  Now if you are done. I am going to fuck you on the desk!

Oh Jordan!!!  SWOON!!

As with all the books from this amazing author, she gives us a couple of great twists and this one didn’t disappoint at all.

I gotta say WTF with the 2nd epilogue!!!  Ma’am you have some explaining to do!

Review by Twinsie Melinda

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I absolutely love this series. I fell head over heals for Jordan and Whitley. Jordan tried so hard to win Whitley over but Whitley is so stubborn and trying to protect herself she is having no part of his wooing.

Whitley is a successful attorney who is stubborn, headstrong and has all the tenacity to go with it. She knows what she wants and does what she wants and does not hold back. Jordan is a successful defense attorney who also knows exactly what he wants and goes after it full steam a heard.

Jordan wants Whitley only problem Whitley doesn’t like Jordan. Jordan convinces Whitley to negotiate a one night stand. After that night Whitley doesn’t want any contact from him. Jordan is able to track her down a year later and makes himself her new boss. He is determined to make her his. When he learns about Heidi it is a done deal only Whitley doesn’t know it.

I love that Jordan doesn’t give up. The things he does for Whitley and Heidi sends my heart fluttering. The things he says and does like the kisses on the forehead and the night time routine serious swoon moments. The way he protects them would do anything for them even die for them. He won me over with all he does. Lets talk about the 2nd Epilogue. I have questions really who was it and what secrets.

I loved every book in this series and I need more, No really I need more.

I received this book for an honest review.

Hey everyone, I hope you are doing well. I got distracted by the description of this new release and
thought I would give it a try. I’m here to tell you all about it.
Onya is a mix of resilient and naïve as hell. She’s had a bit of a rough time growing up but still has
an independent streak a mile wide that helps keep her going when times get even tougher. I
struggled just a smidge with how naïve she is when her home life is not presented as the greatest.
Usually, it seems when people have a rough home life, they have a better sense of self preservation.
You know those moments when you want to yell at a character in a book? I had a few of those with
Onya. Why girl? why? I almost started to wonder if she had a death wish for a moment. Onya is
pretty smart though and sees through most of the lies that other girls take almost as gospel and
stands up for herself which gets her into a lot of trouble with those in charge. She’s not willing to just
go along with what they want her to do which leads to some serious consequences.
The world building is good, and you learn some about their gods and some things about their
culture. It seems to be a Norse religion-based society but not exactly Viking. I am hopeful that if
there is a sequel, we will get more information to help expand on what this book shows us.
For the most part I felt this was a pretty good book. It is what I would call mature PG13 up until about
3/4 of the way through and then you get more adult content but it’s not extremely explicit either. So, if
that’s what you are looking for you are going to be a bit disappointed.

Cooper

By day I’m fighting fires and saving lives with my brothers at the station, and by night I’m slinging drinks at our family bar with my blood brothers.
I was happy, but I couldn’t help wanting more.
When I stumble across the stunning redhead and her little boy, it’s like everything I was searching for just appeared in front of me.
When an apartment fire takes everything she’s ever worked for, I can’t help offering my home to her and that chubby faced toddler.
Soon enough, they’re not just living in my home, but now they’re permanent residents of my heart.
And if I have it my way, they’ll never go anywhere for the rest of our lives.

Haley

I never planned to be a single mom, but Roman is the absolute love of my life and the best thing that ever happened to me.
When I moved to Nashville for a fresh start, I never could have dreamed what was heading our way.
When the firefighter with a heart of gold steps in to help me and my boy, I vow to find some way to repay him.
I just never imagined I would end up giving him my heart.
I soon find myself imagining a life I never saw for us… a happily ever after.
But after years of never being enough or wanted by someone, can I trust that he really wants us forever?

Haley is a single mama to a cute little boy, living on her own after just moving to Nashville after finding herself pregnant and her parents kicking her out of the house. the only person she ever had in her corner was her older brother Jensen, who is in the military to do anything he can to help his sister and his nephew with anything they might need. When Roman is getting his molars and can’t get any form of relief, Haley is exhausted and while he’s screaming in the store while trying to get a few items Haley finds a tall good-looking stranger coming up behind her asking if he could try to help her little guy. Cooper grabbed some frozen waffles, and it was the best sound Haley ever heard Roman was finally calming down. When Cooper turned that corner at the store he was hit by a ton of bricks, and he was needing to get to know this woman and her son, he can’t stop thinking about them at all. When the Station gets a fire call at Haley’s apartment complex, Cooper is now in a panic until he sees them and knows they are safe, but they are now going to be staying together while Haley gets back on her feet, but once that happens will Haley or Roman want to leave the comfort of Coopers house, or will he chip away at all the walls that she has put up to protect her heart so what happens in her past didn’t affect her life now. OMG these dang firemen are smoking, hawt and ugh I’m needing this station too be real. another great story and I need the next one. but these cliffhangers are torture in the best way.
